With the announcement of the new challenger decks, I was thinking of buy 2 of the red ones. I’m still working on a list, but what can I add to make it better for fir modern? If you need the challenger deck list here it is. Like I said I’m going to buy 2 of these and try to make it better suited for modern
1 Chandra, Torch of Defiance
1 Hazoret the Fervent
3 Soul-Scar Mage
4 Bomat Courier
3 Kari Zev, Skyship Raider
3 Harsh Mentor
1 Glorybringer
4 Fanatical Firebrand
4 Ahn-Crop Crasher
4 Shock
4 Lightning Strike
2 Abrade
2 Magma Spray
4 Sunscorched Desert
20 Mountain
2 Magma Spray
2 Key to the City
2 Pia Nalaar
2 Kari Zev's Expertise
3 Sentinel Totem
4 Chandra's Defeat
I’m going to pick up 2 of the challenger decks Friday, and I already have 2 hazzeret so I have 4. My plan is to use this for a standard deck, then switch a few cards to make it a modern. I’ll get the bolts and swiftspeares.
My budget for upgrades is $50 at most outside the challenger decks.
The curve is way off for 18x lands.
It doesn't work with cards like: Hazoret, Chandra or Glorybringer which are more of a midrange type cards anyway and not work in an aggro deck which is low to the ground.
So far after testing I’m liking Vexing. I’m thinking of dropping Glorybringer and Pia. Is Koth worth it in this deck? I haven’t tested with Koth yet and replacing Chandra. Ill update it later with 22 lands
I’m still working on the updated decks list, and looks like I want to go midrange in my build. In thr new version I’ve bumped the lands to 22 mountain for now, I’ll see if my lgs has ruins. Ive dropped to 3 hazoret and I’m wanting to try goblin chainwhirler. I have a playset. My local meta is weak where my mono blue delver was to much for them. Unfortunately for me, there are no good lgs near me so I have no need to buy expensive cards to win
Another option worth trying in a midrange list is Hanweir Garrison which is slighltly better defensively than Rabblemaster and only slightly slower as a snowball-finisher.
Personally I don't think than Goblin Chainwhirler is particularly good in Modern.
Thx for the advice and helping decide to make this more midrange. After reading all and looking at budget, here is the list I’m going by to try. The side will come later, and I still want to try Koth in this.
For removal I'd probably go with Abrade for the flexibility over Wild Slash and Forked Bolt (or Arc Trail) over Burst Lightning (splitting targets seems better than hitting for-4 in the lategame and instant speed).
The deck probably doesn't really support "ferocious particularly well so Exquisite Firecraft is probably better than Crater's Claws in the deck, also with Young PyromancerStoke the Flames is probably a good option as well with the tokens helping to convoke it for a reduced casting cost.

Also, Shock and Lightning Strike aren't really Modern level cards...
There is a variety of better burn spells like:
Forked Bolt, Burst Lightning/Wild Slash, Incinerate, Rift Bolt, Searing Blaze, Crater's Claws, Stoke the Flames/Exquisite Firecraft/Char.
Agro May be the wrong type, but this is just a modern upgrade to the standard version
If you aim to go longer and be more of a midrangy deck than cut Vexing Devil.

4 Lightning Bolt
4 Wild Slash
3 Burst Lightning
3 Crater’s Claw
Monastery Swiftspear is also a bit more suited to an aggro deck so maybe Soul-Scar Mage can help with its second ability to midrange deck looking to go longer by making th burn spells relevant against bigger creatures.
