Hi, everyone! Today's question is about Modern which I'm really new to. Now I am a little bit confused and stunned with all that great amount of cards which I can use in my modern deck and I'd like to get an advice. I run this U/B Metallurgic Summonings:
but I'd like to make some changes to make it look more like U/B control. Also, the second finisher would be great, because I understood that relying only on Metallurgic Summonings is not 100% win condition.
2) About changes into U/B control. I guess more AOE removals are needed. Unfortunately Damnation is too much for my budget, so I run 1xLife's Finale and want to add 2xFlaying tendrils + 1xLanguish. What do you think?
Assuming all the above I can say that there are plenty of changes for the deck but I have no ideas what is playable and strong in Modern and what is not. So, let’s discuss!
I am not a native English speaker, so please take my probable mistakes easy))
#Duress should probably not be in the deck (counterspells would work better) and Negate is better in the SB as is Languish.
Instead I'd run some general purpose counters like: Rune Snag (should be 4x or 0), more Mana Leak or Condescend.
#I'd add 4x Serum Visions to the deck as it is pretty much a must play in any blue deck and especially in control.
It can either replace the creatures or by trimming dwon on some of the removal spells.
1 Baral, Chief of Compliance
2 Contraband Kingpin

2 Duress
4 Anticipate
4 Grasp of Darkness
2 Negate
1 Blue Sun's Zenith
2 Essence Extraction
1 Lost Legacy
2 Murder
3 Ruinous Path
4 Spell Shrivel
2 Hieroglyphic Illumination
1 Life's Finale
2 Part the Waterveil
3 Metallurgic Summonings

13 Island
12 Swamp

1) So, the second finisher. As a budget player I consider putting 2xSilumgar, the Drifting Death or 1xGriselbrand. I also thought about adding something like Palace siege or even Suffer the past. But what are your ideas, guys?

Concerning the threats I’d like to use Jace, Architect of Thought and maybe Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver which would be a nice choice against some match-ups. Also thinking about Dralnu, Lich lord.

It is a UR build but all the blue cards are relevant for your deck too.
Some notable ones are:
Temporal Trespass, Logic Knot/Condescend/Spell Burst, Pull from Tomorrow,
Epiphany at the Drownyard, Careful Consideration, Thirst for Knowledge.
For removal I'd suggest: Victim of Night and Go for the Throat.
For countermagic: Mana Leak, Rune Snag (only as a 4x-of), Dissolve, Dissipate/Void Shatter, Supreme Will.

How do you like it?
#I don't think you really need the creatures and if you are going to play creatures as finishers you have better options.
Like: Nezahal, Primal Tide, Oona, Queen of the Fae, Sphinx of Magosi, Tetzimoc, Primal Death and Pearl Lake Ancient.
Or some good demon options like: Bloodgift Demon (draws cards), Kothophed, Soul Hoarder (even more card draw),
Nefarox, Overlord of Grixis (forces to sac' creatures) and Reaper from the Abyss (doubles up your removal).
As a non-creature finisher Rise from the Tides isn't a bad option.
#Sunken Hollow is a decent budget dual-land for this deck and should replace Nephalia Drownyard and a basic.
Drowned Catacomb is also a good option (but a bit more expensive) and there is also River of Tears though it is rather inconsistent.
#Some spells can be optimized like replacing Ruinous Path and Murder with 4x Hero's Downfall and also Victim of Night is mostly a better Grasp of Darkness (except in some rare cases of indestructible creatures that have 4-toughness or the rare zombies/vampires as werewolves aren't played).
I'd also go with Pull from Tomorrow over Blue Sun's Zenith and replace Hieroglyphic Illumination with either: Glimmer of Genius, Careful Consideration or Thirst for Knowledge.
#Duress should probably not be in the deck (counterspells would work better) and Negate is better in the SB as is Languish.
Instead I'd run some general purpose counters like: Rune Snag (should be 4x or 0), more Mana Leak or Condescend.
#As a finisher spell I'd go with Temporal Trespass over Part the Waterveil as it creates a bigger token and can be cast for cheaper with "delve" (which requires running spells that fill the GY like: Thought Scour, Forbidden Alchemy, Thirst for Knowledge, Epiphany at the Drownyard).
#I'd add 4x Serum Visions to the deck as it is pretty much a must play in any blue deck and especially in control.
