Hi Everyone,
I am a fairly new magic player when it comes to competitive formats such as modern, and I have decided to get in without straining my wallet.
I really like storm as a deck, but the current version is too far out of my budget for me to dip my feet into the modern format.
So, I brew up this little budget storm shell that uses Epic Experiment to hopefully hit one of my Bombs and combo off.
I can stall for time to establish another Epic Experiment combo by hitting a Beacon of Tomorrows with Epic Experiment and copying it with my Copy Cards.
The main goal like most storm decks is to play Grapeshot after a long combo, just in this version I use one of my Bombs to pump up that storm count.
I proxy tested this deck in a casual setting and it works well, I'm not playing any izzet non-basic lands because of budget reasons and because not many mana problems came up during testing.
I just want some opinions of cards to add or remove and some cheap sideboard cards to use, I would also like your opinion if this deck can hold its own at a LGS Modern Event before I shell out money to buy it.
I'm a student so my funds are mainly spent on school stuff so its nice to have Magic as a hobby when it doesn't break budget.
My Budget is about $80 usd, but a lot of cards are marked up in us pricing, because I live in Australia.
Thanks for Visiting and Hope you have a Great Day!
Rituals:
4 Mana Morphose
4 Pyretic Ritual
2 Desperate ritual
Bombs:
2 Beacon of tommorows
4 Grapeshot
1 Time reversal
2 Past in flames
3 Epic Experiment
Copy Cards:
1 Twincast
3 Reverberate
Support:
3 Serum Visions
4 Brainstorm
2 Mystical Tutor
4 Goblin Electromancer
3 Baral Chief of Compliance
Lands:
11 Islands
7 Mountains
- You probably don't need 4 Grapeshots to get a win. Playing only 2 is fine.
- You want to play as much mana as possible, so put in 2 more Desperate Ritual.
- Cards like Beacon of Tomorrows and Time Reversal are not what you want to be doing in this deck. Storm only cares about how many spells you've cast this turn, so taking extra turns isn't that great. Reversal is also kinda clunky. You'll probably figure out that once you get going and flash back a Past in Flames with some rituals in the yard you can win that turn no problem.
- Opt is going to be printed in Modern very very soon with the release of Ixalan and will be cheap to get.
- How much do Remands cost? If you can grab a few they are very good with Baral and you can also Remand your Grapeshot then recast it to get tons of triggers. This is how most standard Storm decks win these days. You only need ~7-8 Storm triggers with this method.
- There are lots of other cheap ($ wise) spells like Peer Through Depths. If you can afford some Sleight of Hands that will really help though.
- If you really want to double spells then play Increasing Vengeance. With Past in Flames it only costs RR to flash back but still copies your cards twice! Think of the value!
All that said: I'd make a deck that looks something like:
Once you can upgrade cards look to transition into this to be truly competative, but really though why would you when you can play EE. Most of the cards on that list are what you already listed with the exception of commons I added and bulk rares so buying it shouldn't be a problem and it will be far more competitive than before.
Thanks for your feedback.
I made a few revisions to make the deck run smoother but that came with added costs.
I took this version to locals and I got decent results, here is the current decklist.
I was running Spirebluff Canal instead of Sulfur Falls but Sulfur is getting a reprint in Dominaria which should make it the more budget option if your reading this post Dominaria. Would love to hear your thoughts.

- First off Brainstorm and Mystical Tutor are not legal in Modern. For a list of what is legal and what is banned read this.
