I second the Orb and the Mask as budget Leylines, just missing the "if you get this in your opening hand, you get lucky" clause....
They are not, that clause is what makes the Leyline useful. By turn 4 (3 with a dude) which is the time you can drop those cards into play, you will probably be dead against burn and thorn into shreds against discard. In fact, discard probably already removed the card from your hand.
for wurmcoil well wurmcoil is only like 10 to 15 and you never play 4 of them but replacements are Myr Superion + elves
or the (artifact dragon thingy that blows stuff up) steel something?

I was coming to say the same thing. Requires 3 black, but that is only 1 more colored than Lily (same CMC with kicker) and does her -2 quite nicely while still leaving a body behind.
Blood Scrivener working in concert with Necrogen Mists do a pretty good Bob + Lily impression, considering that Pain Seer will usually suicide itself before you get a card out of it. Scrivener also nets an extra card off of any other draw effect if the condition is met.

I've got a friend who wants to get into Modern and he likes Soul Sisters. He can't afford the 4 Serra Ascendant, so I couldn't find something close to that card. Would anyone suggest something close? Thanks!
Honestly, there's not much point to playing a Soul Sisters deck without Serra Ascendant.
Thanks for the info. I agree that without Serra Ascendant, he'll be missing out on one the win con. I'll try to figure out some kind of deck for him to have fun while being able to compete!
With Modern Masters 2015 edition, some cards may become budget that aren't currently, possibly even entire decks. For instance, the Daybreak Coronet reprint could push bogles into budget range! I suspect this thread may need to be amended in coming months, and some new decks added to the pinned lists for budget decks, and a lot of decks may get to be tweaked and improved while remaining cheap.

While it will bring the price of Coronet down ( I still expect it to be at least a $20 card though), the Horizon Canopy price is still a significant issue for Bogles being budget.

I will always firmly stand by the belief that Magic is a game first and a collectable second.

Horizon Canopy could be reprinted as well, and I suspect Coronet will go down lower, as it was a rare from a set that wasn't printed much compared to today's sets, and it's a card only played in one competitive deck, and that deck isn't a tier 1 deck. I'd guess Coronet would go down as low as $10, possibly less depending on how valuable other rares and mythics in MM average out to. This isn't really the thread for that discussion though.
Abbot of Keral Keep bears some snapcaster mage similarities, having nice tempo play, potential card advantage if you have extra mana open only for that turn, 2/1 base stats. It doesn't serve the same recursive purposes, but it does serve similar card advantage and tempo purposes. It can also potentially smooth out land drops early on occasionally.
Honored Hirearch is no Noble Hirearch, heck, it's no birds of paradise, but if you need a second 1 mana birds equivalent to produce all 5 colors and you expect to be able to hit with attacks early on, it might be playable... maybe... probably not...
Spoilers aren't done yet for Magic Origins by the time I'm posting this either.
Hi, running Modern Jund without Goyf or Liliana because of price. I can't decide what to substitute for them. I am thinking maybe Sorin, Solemn Visitor for Liliana but is it worth splashing white? Or should I just stick to Necrogen Mists? As for Goyf, obviously nothing replaces him and that's why he is $200 but should I run Hooting Mandrills instead? Or just stick in some more removal?
Thanks!

In addition to those cards listed in the first post here, I also added the following as Goyf alternatives:
Tombstalker
Knight of the Reliquary
Quirion Dryad
Leatherback Baloth
Putrid Leech
Updated that first post to reflect some of the ideas people posted here. Look to see those ideas in an upcoming MoM article too!

Jace, Vryn's Prodigy // Jace, Telepath Unbound may have some potential as Snapcaster Mage alternative for budget decks.
Mizzium Meddler could have potential as a Spellskite alternative for budget decks, especially if you have some way to flicker it.
Thopter Spy Network makes a free 1/1 flying token every turn like Bitterblossom, if in blue and a 4 drop.
Languish could potentially be a budget Damnation alternative that is more reliable in decks that aren't mono black like Mutiliate prefers.
Liliana, Heretical Healer // Liliana, Defiant Necormancer could be a decent budget alternative to Liliana of the Veil, at least for discard purposes.
