I have been having a ton of fun with this deck. I can't afford Fetch lands which means going mono coloured. I am playing a storm combo deck with a simple yet powerful game plan that can just bowl over anyone not prepared for it. Instead of the can trip heavy U/R storm which seeks to draw their deck and hit with a single grapeshot for 20. We win by obtaining 6 mana with a flurry of rituals into empty the warrens and goblin bushwhacker. In most cases this happens turn 4.
young pyromancer allows as to gain value from rituals and card draw spells than against slow opponents can allow us to beat down so less storm is required for the kill and in rare cases bushwhack the elemental tokens to kill.
Pyromancers Ascension once activated causes everything to go into hyperdrive it is hard to lose once it is online.
Gitaxian probe... we save on life with no fetch and shocks... we can use this extra life to draw a card and to look at our opponents hands to know when it is safe. Also allows for value off young pyromancer when tapped out.
Wild guess.. don't have blue dig spells this is in my opinion the second best available in mono red... dump the redunant cards in your hand for hopefully better ones.
Fungal reaches... allows us to store mana while flooded to hopefully use past in flames to snag a win in a grindier game.
On SCG this deck costs $60 with the cards I had and some commons box diving at my LGS I got it for about $10.
I don't as of yet have a true sideboard and its easy to blow your budget on Blood moon one of the big benefits of going mono red. I will hold off on building it until I know how the bannings and unbanning change things. Furthermore you are a combo deck running really tight on everything there isn't much you can change without destabilizing your combo I suggest not really siding in anything more than just the 2 most important cards.
molten rain becomes blood moon if you want to pay for it not sure is sowing salt might just be better or forgoing land hate completely. Pithing needle is amazing and always has targets. Grim lavamancer is late game burn.. which is good. Tormod's crypt can also fit nicely in the side if you badly need the grave hate..I should try to find room, it is free storm count. Dismember kills things before they kill us.
Wow Ensnaring bridges price took a jump I swear they were $5 a month ago, along with past in flames and asscention.
modern price jumps I guess is something you have to get used to. I'd of liked to go up to 3 past in flames
Well the obviously problem is drawing empties bushwackers and pyromancers and no enablers. I have a lot more of these win con cards than a normal storm deck that is all cantrips. I am considering fitting is desperate ravings as more card draw because thats never a bad thing.
Shatterstorm can replace shattering spree in the side its cheaper anyway. I keep misreading lavamancer, and forgetting its only my own grave. However it is a pretty good card if ever I run into a rule of law since I can just start acting as a burn deck with my 4 lighting bolts.
past in flames and ascension jumped because some pros at the last Pour tour said storm was the best deck at the moment.
I don't know why bridge went up
You defiantly could splash blue steam vents sulfer falls and shivan reefs would cover the splash, I have no idea if it would be enough to go for regular storm however, falls and reefs are like 5 each so not to terrible
What's peak mana look like for mana rituals these days?
I've been derping around in 'Trice with a banlist-ignoring mono red storm deck for laughs and have been chaining Reforge The Soul back to back while casting rituals and PiFfing back rituals in between.
I doubt the line of play works with the current bans (there was a lot of reliance on hitting Chrome Mox and/or Simian Spirit Guide to cheat out a needed freebie pip of Red mana), but I found myself having a lot of fun spamming Reforge repeatedly.
The peak is two mana for three mana they sadly banned the rest. I don't really want to cast a five mana spell, I like having very little land. The lack of something like seething song really holds you back in going big. You'd have to build it differently and I feel that differently is too glass cannon fragile. I can see giving the spirit guides a try though.. there are times I am wishing for another ritual or I am stuck on five mana, plus it can be a creature to bushwhack if nessairy.
I am definately a fan of lines of play this deck can do like, lightning bolt, lightning bolt EoT. Then Past in flameslightning boltlightning boltlightning bolt dead. The best advantage of mono red is that I play the full 4 Bolts. For an apperently linear deck I am finding that I actually seem to have quite a few routes to victory... Empty, Pyromancer (bushwacker kills) plus Burn and Ascension going nuts. Although the thing they tend to have in common is.. the need for 6 mana get to 6 mana and your opponents are in trouble.
The big differences are that I am running lighting bolt and gitaxian probe while he opts for the big card draw of reforge the soul and a couple more wild guess for less bushwackers. he is also playing more lands.
I am not really sold on the reforge for two reasons 1. If it gets into your hand and its not your first draw its really bad 2. when you use it you refill your opponents hand. He has definitely focused more heavily on the card draw than I have. I have completely given up on the grapeshot at this point as well.
I could be convinced with going with less bushwakers, since having a hand of just empties and bushwackers is the worst. wild guess, is really the best red card draw but its always my first sideboard cut.. nothing worse than getting your wild guess remanded.
I feel like probe just has too much synergy with pyromancer to cut it despite the life loss.
I am currently 1 mana-morphose from owning my version of the deck on paper... I bought a set of them only for them to go out of stock before the order went through. I had a friend find three in is pile of Modern masters to compensate (I paid for them as part of a big order with friends) If anyone says I am copying Woo.. this thread proves it :).
I am thinking about making a full primer for this.
Its just that I just don't really think I play enough compedative modern to really be confident in my abilities. I don't have a MTGO account and its a little difficult for me to get to the one store that has modern tournies.
whoa locket of yesterdays is super interesting... I kind of think it is better than ascension particularly when I drop my emptys into my grave with faithless early game. I don't have the cantrips to turn on acession but I having just one manamorphose in the grave and the fun happens.
His deck is still on the grapeshot plan and my deck is his deck preboarded. I like to think my deck is less all in he has to get 10 spells cast to win.. I just need 4-6
Noxious Revival seems awful to me but I haven't actually played the deck so I dunno. Act is very interesting to me; I'd probably swap the Revivals for that. I think I agree on Wild Guess.
I have actually obtained a couple locket of yesterdays (for free someone was giving away a box of old cards) but just haven't got around to trying them. I should just try a grapeshot(I now own 4) version of the deck with locket and more cantrips instead of trying to bushwhack people.
Past in flames was in my LGS rare folder for $4 so I just impulse bought it, because who knows when that will skyrocket in price again.
I built this deck on a whim and I love it. I took it to tuesday modern and I lost. The deck is surprisingly more complex than I thought.
I am gonna see if I can get some lockets and try them out. I think grapeshot is definitely sideboard or one of. Reforge has no business being in the Empty version but probably puts in work in the grapeshot version.
I also think 3 bolts is plenty, it ends up being a dead draw when combining off. I'd say 2-3 is good in the main and the rest keep them in sideboard for creature decks.
I'll keep trying it out and build a sideboard and report in.
Think about a kiln fiend or two in the sideboard? You're casting so many spells that could just get you in for lethal.
If you're thinking about splashing blue for Desperate Ravings, I wonder if Goblin Electromancer could be a good addition. Depends on how useful he'd be towards pumping rituals, but Finkel said it's absolutely crazy not to put him in the regular UR Storm. Could throw your opponent off, too. Bait removal when your opponent thinks you're on normal storm. If you can fit it, I think it's better than the locket for most things. You probably won't be casting an Empty or a Past in Flames with another in the yard, and they seem to be the cards that benefit the most. Also, budget, they're like 15¢. Hahaha.
Splashing green for Burning-Tree Emissary could be a good alternative to splashing blue. Also, Storm Entity seems like a good card for any version of this deck.
(I am personally 4 serum visions, 4 slight of hand short of a full storm deck, I can play the recently reprinted delta's and strands If I wanted to)
Burning- Tree while free only generates 3 damage total, lightning bolt does the job better with more versatility. Storm entity deals less damage than Goblin Bushwhacker. Also as an ETB effect it can't simply be fizzed by an abrupt decay'ed. So sorry while cute those card's don't really help.
The deck is streamlined, fast and fragile.
3 lands, Three rituals, Empty, bushwhack = 18 damage. We don't need to draw our whole deck, we just have to hit an unsuspecting/unprepared opponent with that combination.
OMG! They printed a sweet new card Magmatic insight I am going to have to do some testing to see if I can cut down on win conditions and just draw a ton more cards. Tormenting voice has been good and this can be both better and worse depending so I'd have to test it.
This is the mono red storm I have been playing with for awhile now. Haven't had any money due to being between jobs, so haven't been able to play in any modern tourneys. I picked up everything I needed for U/R Storm (minus Tarns), TWoo's Goblinstorm and this Mono Red build all at the same time. I like the consistency of this build. I haven't done any testing yet with Magmatic Insight, curious what you have found from it.
SIDEBOARD
2 Empty the Warrens
2 Defense Grid
3 Blood Moon
4 Young Pyromancer
4 Lightning Bolt
Originally I found this list online but I'm having trouble searching it back up and finding who originally put it together. If I wanted to slot 2 Magmatic Insight in, I would probably drop 1 each of Locket and Voice. Right now the deck is big piles of 4 of's, which helps make it super consistent. I could also see replacing 2 Reforge with the Insights, but sometimes you really do just need to refill your entire hand. This build has a lot of air. It's pretty rare that it fizzles tho.
Also, in case you never saw it, TWoo did what he called All In Modern Goblins, aka Goblin Storm. His original build had 4 Seige Gang and no Loyalists, but too often I had the Seige's stranded, and Loyalist nullifies opponent tokens so nicely.
I had a game w/Goblin Storm against infect where I was on the draw. T1 he shocked and played Glistener elf. T2 I stormed up to Warrens and dropped 10 Goblins on the table. T2 he played a 2nd Elf and prepared to block. My T2 I kicked Bushwhacker and swung for 22. 4 points were blocked by the 2 Elves and I hit him for exact damage. It was just a game for fun rather than during a tourney, but it was hilarious. The one night I took Goblin Storm to a local Modern tourney, I went 0-3, but had some really silly turns.
I'm looking into Sac Land Tendrils for Legacy to go along w/my Burn, Pox and almost complete Mono Blue Trix. Enjoy the lists.
Without the really good rituals Pyromancer's Swath probably makes you discard your entire hand too often to be good. Ascension can be played on turn 2 and help you win turn 3 with not extra cards spent.

so I continue to play the deck. I am considering splashing blue but not for the cantrips only for desperate ravings. shivian reefs and sulfur falls. I personally have steam vents from standard.
Today I got the truely mythical turn two kill. I didn't even know it was possible.
on the draw
land, gitaxian probe, lighting bolt, pyrhetic ritual, desperate ritual, empty the warrens, goblin bushwacker draw land.
Probe, draw faithless looting play land loot draw desperate ritual, magma jet. Discard bolt and jet. pass.
Draw desperate ritual
hand desperate ritual, desperate ritual, desperate ritual, phyretic ritual, empty the warrens, goblin bushwacker, land.
