With the spoilers happening roughly 2 hours from this post I figured we could get the thread up and rolling. We are getting 10 cards spoiled today at PAX East, with spoiler season then taking place over the next three weeks. Feel free to discuss all WAR related cards in this thread and as always remember to abide by the form and subforum rules.
With the last few spoiler-free hours what are you hoping for from the set?
With MH just around the corner, I am actually not looking forward to some of the cards I typically look for in new sets: powerful/generic answers, better card selection, reprints of Modern appropriate cards, etc. I think MH is going to address those issues more directly. Instead, I am looking forward to some Knight of the Reliquary-style versatile answers for a BO1/Standard/Arena world. Charms, commands, modal creatures, etc. will likely be on the menu as preview season continues. Given the fact that WAR has so many walkers, increasing the need to interact with additional permanent types, I think this is a reasonable prediction.
I would also love to see more 3 and even 2 mana walkers to boost various Modern strategies. A cheap BGx themed walker that attacked the GY would be great. Or a Wx walker that taxed opposing spells. This might be more appropriate for MH, but maybe WAR gives us some bones.
I'd love to see more spells with modal "destroy target legendary permanent" options. This way it keeps relevant even if Planeswalkers never get to see much play.

In other news, this countdown resetting and the ensuing Twitch reaction is pretty entertaining. At least the panel is also being delayed and we aren't just missing it because of bad tech.
Well, the 4 CMC multi-colored exiling sweeper is interesting, but too narrow to see even SB application.
Flux channeler super-proliferate within a deck filled with cantrips and red rituals could create something. Like a weird storm-like deck. (For example off shrine of burning rage)
invade the city looks like a potential card for yet another UR cantrippy / ritual deck. Make only on big guy seems not powerful enough though.
emergence zone being a land quicken is interesting. It does not give a card but does not really costs a slot in the deck.
Tezzet is too constly at 6 CMC, but affinity for artifact... have they not learned anything??? Oh, and its +2 can deal tons of damage in the same deck.
All in all, the first preview are interesting, to say the least.
Most of the PWs so far seem horrendously uninteresting. Either Limited fodder or way too expensive to be relevant. It is interesting to see static Enchantment-like effects stapled onto them though.
Besides what's already written above (I definitely agree with Invade the City and Emergence Zone possibly seeing something) I'm interested to see if Flux Channeler has the capability of breaking something. If not for durdley PW control or something, it could also absolutely wreak havoc with Infect. Luckily being 3 mana is a real cost, but it would be interesting to see that abused with infect counters.
Nothing else really stands out to me, other than stuff I would shove into Commander.
Huh... I’m imagining a lanterns variant with bolas’ citadel and aetherflux reservoir.
Shred away all of the lands from the top of your deck to keep the “storm” going (gaining a net positive in life from the reservoir) until you burn your opponent out.
OK Guys, I firmly believe Bolas' Citadel can be broken in Modern. Sooo on what turn do we want to play it?
Notably, this doesn't just allow you to flip your deck onto the table. Eventually you will hit a land and have no more land drops and then the chain stops even if you are under Phyrexian Unlife and can afford to keep paying. AdNaus doesn't care about lands one way or another.
If you can get it into play in an OoopsAllSpells deck, you could use it to win as long as Infinite life is in effect. But that strategy isn't viable in Modern because we lack cards like Lions Eye Diamond/other free spells/mana.
Now if you have some way to get lands off your top deck infinitely then sure, but then you're infinitely milling yourself and then why not play Labman and just not bother with Citadel at all?
The fact that it is its own wincon is mildly notable, but it takes two turns unless you can untap it, and at that point there are again better options.
OK Guys, I firmly believe Bolas' Citadel can be broken in Modern. Sooo on what turn do we want to play it?
The card is worse than ADN. Why?
a) You need to pay life, not lose life. This way, something like Unlife or Angel's Grace doesn't work with it (aka, once you are down to 1-2 life you cannot cast any more cast via it, cause you have not enough life to pay for it)
b) Double land pricks you
c) It costs 6 mana. To generate that mana early one you need play clunky cards (like Lotus Bloom) which in return are bad with it when you want to abuse it.
d) Why not slam something like Griselbrand instead and just win?
Greetings,
Kathal

What I play or have:
Modern/Legacy
either funpolice (Delver, Deathcloud, UW Control) or the fun decks (especially those ft. Griselbrand)
It doesn't take two turns if you have 4 of them in your deck... its very important to have spells that give life while giving you permanents... like Knight of Autumn, Detain // Deploy or other stuff like Obstinate Baloth and for obvious reasons Aetherflux Reservoir. I like it as a Whir target. The biggest problem is indeed the top deck management... Codex shredders or the Surveil Demon could help.

Much thanks! I was having a very hard time trying to read.
So Karn looks like it's going to make Whir Prison about 10x more obnoxious.
Gideon looks to be annoying, but can at least be hit by exile removal.
Chandra seems interesting. If not outright removed, punishes people for attacking her.
Nissa is green, so I'm not interested
Domri seems good for creature decks, as expected. Going into Zacama Commander.
Ral seems AWESOME for Phoenix.
Sorin seems kind of meh. I'll put him in my Teysa Commander though.
Teferi seems GREAT!
Nicol Bolas is... wow... can do ALL other abilities? Of opponents too???
Niv seems... clunky and weird.
Immediate ideas:
We now have 8 copies of the Bitterblossom effect for sacrifice outlet decks, including the previously spoiled Cabal Therapist for MH1, with the new Dreadhorde Invasion, Trap card or not, Cabal Therapy every turn is very powerful Flux Channeler has a sneaky home in an old brew of mine that abuses artifact mana with Everflowing Chalice, Tezzeret's Gambit and friends to generate absurdist amounts very quickly. Could be fun
yeah if those leaked cards are indeed real id be content with that. nothing stands out as amaze-balls, but certainly hit the fringe playability mark at first blush.
ral and teferi look like they have some applications so im happy lol. ral in particular could be kinda absurd. -2 on a lightning bolt to the face is what? 2 triggers + 2 bolts for 12 damage? ill pay 1 mana and a card for that
