Modal spell, all three modes are useful, UUU cost makes it prohibitive to all but dedicated blue decks. Sure, I'm cool with it. 3 mana at instant speed for two cards is good, the counterspell is okay, and taking a permanent at instant-speed is good. It's an answer to one-drops, spells, and a big deal in a control matchup (EOT archmage charm into big papa Jace in UW mirrors sounds fun).
The last mode seems a lot stronger than it sounds at first, just looking through established decks. There's obvious stuff like stealing a Death's Shadow, but even stealing something like a mana dork can be very strong.

Flipped thing in the ice.
edit: it's been awhile since I played and I missed that rule change! so my bad
I think Wrenn and Six is a Land Destruction card. It improves on Crucible in multiple ways and goes nicely with Boom//Bust, and the emblem allows you to recycle land destruction.
I won't say it'll be a good deck but I think the skeleton is shaping up. I wonder if a Naya version is possible to take advantage of Flagstones and other white goodies?
The PW is completely and utterly broken in Legacy. Slightly less broken in Modern but still really good.
Holy crap the cmc 3 slot for UW is HIGHLY contested now. For the people complaining that UW is the only control option, arcmage charm asks for a whopping 23 blue sources to cast on turn so you get to barely splash a second color if you want to play that. Probably cements UW as the prime control combination even further.

No, they changed that ruling, flipped tiddy is still cmc2

People have the right to be disappointed, but I can't help myself and think they're whiny children.
What is it with Counterspell seriously ? They don't have the gift they order Santa Claus, so they sulk and let everyone know on the internet ? Is it really the one card that defines whether this set is good or not ? Aren't the 4 counter spells revealed enough yet ?
Why can't those people enjoy the good stuff and deal with it ? One can enjoy :
1- what's gonna be the limited environment of MH1,
2- some playable niche cards for tier 3 decks,
3- some flashy cards for tier 1-2 decks,
4- the flavour of many cards (text, call back),
5- the Commander extra support,
6- the Pauper extra support.
There's already nearly 30 cards that are gonna see play in Modern, THIRTY. Are those people blind and only see what's good for the only one archetype they play ? Legacy staples and strong role players (Counterspell is one) willnotbe in MH1. Get. Over. It.
MH1 is not only there to fix the MUs we're not comfortable with, it's not only there to shut Phoenix, Humans or Tron down. It's also there to make a playable limited format, push bad and average decks, cautiously reprint old cards, and (re)test the water of many mechanics. This set is not a BR announcement, this set is not the merger with Legacy.
It's not healthy to read these forums when mindsets are targetted at one specific wish (the BR Announcement is sometimes as painful to read because of that). This set has already me convinced it's going to shift the Modern metagame. What bothers me most is people who complain this is a Commander set, how wrong they are imo.
Thanks for these awesome words. I couldn't have said it better. I think the biggest problem is that many people simpy had wrong expectations for the set. In my playgroup, which consists out of 90% Modern players most people are extremely happy with what we have seen so far, including me.
I'm over counterspell not being there. I agree with the poster who said logic knot is almost like counterspell and you know what, IT SUCKS. Countering a spell for 2CMC is pretty bad nowadays. I'm not gonna run counterspell (duh) but also not gonna run logic knot.
I'm very grateful the star card from this set is FON, I think it's the card that will change the format quite a lot, since never before could you advance your board without opening your opponent to just outright win the game.
I'll be going jeskai tempo all the way, they say spell queller + new teferi is "pretty good" (meme sound).
Ok, had to look that up. Turns out that the back side of Transform cards *used* to be CMC 0, but now their CMC is based on the front side of the card, after a rules change when Shadows Over Innistrad released.
I actually think the draw two at instant speed for 3 cmc might be the most important part for non-esper control decks. The two other modes make it really good, rather than just barely what was needed.
I'd also like to note it doesn't necessarily have to go into control decks either. There are times when heavier on blue versions of merfolk, faeries, and spirits all might have reasons to consider a card like this waiting in the sideboard for certain matchups. Taking turns might also have interest in some situations.
I have a magical dream percolating of going from Archmage's Charm, curving into Cryptic Commmand, with the following turn involving Snapcaster Mage to Archmages Charm, doing exactly what is needed each turn.
It can't hit transform cards, but it *can* hit almost any token (What tokens are good?) and X-cost creatures (Walking Ballista just gets sacced in response, does anything run Hangarback Walker or that one X-cost Eldrazi?).
As a GBx player, I find Wren interesting as a 1 or 2 of in the 75. How interesting. It's the first card as a midrange player to generate a little excitement.
Some people made great points in the previous posts. A lot of arguments in the past said, "...Wait for Horizons, it'll fix a ton".
As a midrange player, I've found this set extremely disappointed. It feels like the entire archetype was overlooked. Wren gives me pause for the first time in this set for midrange. The Force is ok but could be a 1 of sideboard or just an underwhelming card. Maybe it ends up being an all-star, I don't know. Horizon lands appear more beneficial to the linear decks and less to the fair decks that care about their life total.
+1/+1 and Proliferate seem incredibly underwhelming compared to pretty much all the others besides Body/Mind. A sword would have to be better than Feast/Famine and still wouldn't see play without Stoneforge. There's just no place for a 5 mana investment that is so easily disrupted in a format as brutality fast and efficient as Modern.
Infinitely large Ravager! Just name Masticore with the Mimic! The infinite Persist on the Masticore will take care of the rest!
But Lesser Masticore sucks so much that I don't know whether I even want this combo. Seriously, I need to discard a card to cast this guy, and all I get is the world's lamest Walking Ballista when I don't have the combo?
I imagine there's something more broken to be doing with fixed goblin welder but there is potential for the swords in there no? I do agree that this sword is on the level of Body & Mind (if that) but I think there's a few possible swords that could see play, the new goblin with things like the wellsprings, pentad prism could be good fodder to get the swords onto the battlefield.
I'm going to fiddle with a decklists at least as cawgo was my fav standard deck(it was the first one I was drawn to as I only started in that block)
Spirits

That, considering how the first two modes are going to be more abused than the last.
This is goddamn cool.

Want to play a UW control deck in modern, but don't have jace or snaps?

I'm still excited to see that cycle completed though

The enchantment is very good, as is the Mother Bear. Don’t underestimate either of these backed by Loam.
