As an active mtgo player, the meta was already hateful towards Tron (That's fine), Field of Ruin did a lot to improve UW's match up VS tron. This will do a lot to improve every GB/x arch type Vs big mana. If this is true and the % pts drop like I expect, and the mid range match ups get worse, then there are very few reasons to play tron competitively. That's fine, as much as I like big mana decks I will have to pivot. Maybe I will join the UW decks, or see if another tier 1 deck resonates with me.
While we do not know how the games will play out, but if playing against Field of Ruin is any indication, getting your tron pieces blow apart T2-3-4-5- and getting back a basic isn't going to win games. So, maybe for a while Tron will go away, this is what players have always wanted. Will they got it. No one cry for Tron as a deck, and as a competitive grinder, I will just look towards another deck that can win and excel. I LIKE tron, and have 0 issues playing against it or with it. it's a new day for modern, more spoilers to come.

personally id rather not dwell on what other colors arent getting and just be content that a flagging archetype got a new toy. its not like UW hasnt seen a meteoric rise thanks to new cards of its own.
gbx is clearly going to see a resurgence thanks to this card. so the question is what the format does to respond to that.

I know it is not too likely because of R&D's dislike of counterspells but the fact Trophy was printed as is will hopefully indicate that they are at least willing to explore the paradigm of pushed cost with heavy drawback even if it doesn't make it to print soon.
I don't know what they'd think is drawback enough for 2 mana unconditional counter.
You lose life equal to the cmc of the countered spell?
Ramp them like Trophy?
Enemy draws a card? 2?
You discard a card? 2?

You guys are overthinking. The issue isn’t not-to-have a similar card in other colors. The issue is the card itself, because it presents at the same time:
1) Removal for creature
2) Removal for planeswalker
3) Removal for Tron or Valakut
4) Removal for Leylines (both) which are generally great vs BGx
5) is Flashbackable in Sultai
I do NOT think this is a fair card, at all.
fair? under what context? this is modern.
is mox opal fair? ancient stirrings? a miracle'd terminus? a 1 mana 5/5? 0 mana 4/4s? goryo's?

When i say fair I mean more in the sense of bias from WOTC Development. Ie Boros in color pie could get removal this good but never does meanwhile Golgari is always handed the good stuff. Or how this is perfectly fair and balanced according to WOTC but Blue still cannot get a 2 CMC unconditional counter spell. The power is not so much an issue the double standards are in my book.
I am glad Trophy targets lands. I've really disliked the way the manabase fight is almost totally separate from the overt game but can totally decide the game on its own. It's nice to see players can take a proactive step toward interacting more easily with lands that cause major issues and not lose deck slots to cards uselessinothersituations; I think this is the right approach to more things that destroy lands.
Well you see its has Green in the Color ID so its okay. We all know White is not allowed to have the best stuff anymore. WOTC will apparently do whatever it takes to make Green strong color pie and fairness be damned. GB...Golgari can basically do anything apparently best removal, great ramp, fat tough creatures, graveyard abuse etc...the only thing it lacks is a pushed Walker and counter magic lol. And I bet Vraska will be pushed or at least they will try to. Poor Boros does it even do weenies better then Golgari?

yeah i think i see where you are coming from. i can definitely agree that boros frequently gets shafted (right next to simic). im just not sure how much going down that line of thought helps with balancing the format because power distribution over colors is just a piece of the puzzle.
the silver lining though is that GB getting such a nice card bodes well for everyone else. if they arent afraid to throw that much power into a card, then maybe we could see a new counterspell or vindicate variant in the near future.
as i mentioned earlier assassin's trophy just reeks of play designs influence.

I heard Simic gets shafted because UG Madness was OP and they said never again so now Simic only gets to shine in EDH. Boros on the other hand is screwed in every format. I am not even sure its does Aggressive Weenies the best quite frankly and that is all its allowed to be good at.
Wow everybody. Maybe we can tone down the "woe is [guild x]" hyperbole at least until the spoilers are all in? Odds are if they pushed this card there are a few other things pushed in the set. Who knows, this may even be the reprinting of Counterspell itself. Why do people take this as "sure, GOLGARI, but why not X" instead of "oh wow a pushed answer card, will there be more?"

Didn't Maro say recently that they considered putting Counterspell in a recent set? I feel like they want to put Counterspell into Modern, but don't really want to deal with it in Standard, so it'll probably be one of the first cards we get whenever they finally do a product that's Modern legal but not Standard legal.

tbh i wouldnt be surprised if that was just lip service to get people to stop asking about it. counterspell may or may not come to modern one day, but really its whatever.
my point was more that assassin's trophy is a pure good stuff card. it isnt some enabler or card that scales out of control like treasure cruise. its power is front and center. meaning the likelihood of it being some mistake that slipped through the cracks is close to zero.
so its either an isolated incident, where they are designing standard as usual (ie poorly) with a 2 mana vindicate randomly thrown in; or they are moving in a different direction.

double standards are built in game from day 1.
look at teferi, hero of dominaria and ob nixilis reignited, both 5 mana walkers, teferi's +1 untaps 2 lands as he nets you a card, while ob nixilis drains 1 life. teferi's -3 answers non land permanent, ob nixilis only answers creatures. teferi's ult exiles when you draw, ob nixilis? gimme a break.
Well that is some power hopefully other guilds get some good stuff as well lol.
I find it funny though that this is just for GB...but a 2 CMC unconditional counter is simply too good and just isn't fair.
I wouldn't mind a 2cc counter with the same downside as assassin's trophy.
gimme gimme gimme gimme
or a Revolt version. I am not opposed to a small drawback, I just want it to be a small hoop to jump through in casting, not on the CMC or what it can hit

I'm not convinced Counterspell would be the business right now. What gets cut? 1-3 Logic Knot? Bad cards like Mana Leak? Negate?
Looking at MTGGoldfish thats what UW is playing, 1 of each. So what? Its not even Top 50 in Legacy, or Vintage. You know what is? Sorcerous Spyglass. Abrade see's more play in Legacy, than Counterspell!
Nah. People cannot stomach having their stuff countered, so we have not seen it in what, 15+ years? Hilarious. 'It rates poorly in marketing'
People weep when they see Cryptic getting abused, at 4 Mana. FOUR. God help us when its cast for 6 with Snaps, my opponents flip their ***** at how 'busted' a card it is.
SIX MANA SHOULD BE BUSTED.
Its so aggravating, having to endure the tears of people who could just as easily cast a Thoughtseize, but instead want to be allowed to just cast creatures on curve without having to endure the dreaded 'counter'.
As a former BGx player, I'm happy for such a boost to that archtype.
As a control player, it really baffles me how they could print such an obviously strong card but consider actual Counterspell too strong.

Laughed when seeing the "six mana should be busted" part. haha And I say that as a joke ok.
I have been on the receiving end of Cyptic Command several times, because one of my friends has it in his deck. I think nothing is wrong with the card. It's a good learning experience at that time to test how our decks worked in tight situations.
Assassin's Trophy is a slight upgrade to Abrupt Decay. End of Story, stop exaggerating it. The enemy does gain tempo from it. You are not playing 4 copies in a deck unless you are the hardest of hard control which Modern probably couldn't benefit wisely being in BGx.
The real issue with this card is how it feels colorshifted. Your opponent benefiting doesn't suit Green or Black's Color pie at all. If it had the clause of losing X life it would seem to fit on flavor reasons.
Black has plenty of "reduce cost and your opponent gains something cards." Every 4-mana 6/6 Demon springs to mind, and I'm sure there are many other examples.
I think the whole counterspell whining about people who whine when their spells are countered is ridiculous, because I could modify that post...ya know what, here!
People weep when they see Cavern getting abused, as a colorless land. COLORLESS. God help us when I use Aether Vial as well, my opponents flip their ***** at how 'busted' a card it is.
CREATURE-ONLY TRIBAL FOCUS CARDS SHOULD BE BUSTED.

My friend, this is not a slight upgrade but a significant one. Decay sees a lot of play in contemporary BGx decks (1-3 in Jund, 2-3 in Abzan, 2-4 in Rock) despite its limitation, because it’s a hell of a card. So, even a slightly upgrade to Decay would be big news. But here’s a list of relevant permanents that Trophy hits and Decay misses:
Jace
Teferi
Karn
Ugin
Wurmcoil Engine
Tronlands
Manlands
Azcanta, the Sunken Ruin
Thought-Knot Seer
Reality Smasher
Endbringer
Krark-Clan Ironworks
Primeval Titan (and all the other Titans)
Tasigur
Gurmag Angler
Hollow One
Stormbreath Dragon
Baneslayer Angel
Lyra Dawnbringer
Leylines
Worship
Infinite combo pieces like Felidar Guardian, Restoration Angel, Kiki-Jiki
Random 4-drop curve-topping value plays like Kalitas, Huntmaster of the Fells, and Chandra, Torch of Defiance
That’s just off the top of my head; I’m sure there are plenty I missed. In an “answers” deck like BGx, it cannot be overstated how powerful a catch-all inclusion like this will be. It’s downside is real, yes, but decklists playing the card will take that under consideration and mitigate it as best as possible.
Assassin’s Trophy is bonkers.
