What does Blue and White actually have? White has Path to Exile, but you 2 for 1 yourself with that card most of the time. Blue needs a counter that targets creature spells for U. Just have it say "Counter target creature spell with a converted mana cost of less than 3.".
That or "Counter target any spell with CMC 3 or less" for 1U if they won't give us Counterspell. Blue could really do with some cheap offensive counter magic rather than the defensive counter magic we typically have access you in modern, e.g. Pact of Negation, Overwhelming Denial.

Would Vindicate be run? Sure it's a sorcery speed answer, but it hits everything. I mean, what sort of answer are people looking for, other than "Counterspell or Daze"? Abrupt Decay is still a restrictive answer, I'm not sure if control decks would ever run a UW variant that said something like "Counter target spell cmc 3 or less". Modern's threats, while varied, aren't at the same power level of Legacy, so it shouldn't have Legacy powered answers. Not sure what it should have, but I think cards like Decay and Spell Queller are good steps (I think spell queller is still being under valued).
Is there a reason that we are seeing these non-linear decks make it X-1 in day one but fail to convert into the top 8 on a regular basis? Is just burn out after spending significantly more time playing that those on linear deck or is there underlying weakness of non-linear decks as they progress from the top 64 to the top 8? I have personally always felt that we lack for powerful generic answers that would help interactive decks complete the wide variety of linear decks in the format.
One of the reason is experience, both playing their own deck, and playing against yours
In later rounds, you get to face opponent who have practiced the match up more often, and are more likely to know how to play around your interactions.
For example, if you are playing control against burn
in the earlier round, your opponent might fall in every traps, and might be playing his hand as fast a possible even though it meant half his burn spells will be countered, and he will be tapped out when you play timely reinforcement.
And I'm sure the fatigue also plays a part. If your rounds all take 50 minutes and you never have time to eat/drink/pee, it will eventually take its toll

You seem pretty down on the top8 for indy. I can understand that when taken in a vacuum, it may seem a little doomsday-ish. However, let's remember that the top8 of any large tournament is a precarious result, and if you held the same tournament again with the same players and same decks, it would be completely different. People get there on the back of misplays, mistakes and luck (as well as good judgement). I mean, hell, if the *wind* was blowing differently, you'd have a different top8 haha.
All the same, we like to draw strong conclusions from the top8, and I agree, it's generally worthwhile over as large a sample size as possible. One tournament is at the whims of a couple of people "having a good run". Three tournaments, not so much. My point is; why not combine the top8s from all three tournaments and talk about them in aggregate, instead?
Combining the results in this way, a sort of "super" top8, gives you a much more powerful view into what modern's doing right now as well. You're much less at the mercy of regional bias as well.
If you were to do any of your usual analysis in an article or even just on this forum thread, i'd like to see you taking steps to get the most out of the data, and reduce the amount of isolated assumptions we make as a community. We need less of those and a more rigorous attitude to tournament results.
Since the eldrazi menace (and maybe even slightly before) people have been far too easily prone to banmania and isolated criticism of tournament results, without considering the big picture. I'd hope that you, as a champion of data and clear thinking, would be fighting against that reactionary trend.

I doubt Vindicate would see play in Modern. Anguished Unmaking sees zero play despite being an instant speed version that can't hit lands (which is admittedly a problem against Tron or Infect).

You don't call "dying to removal" if the removal is more expensive in resources than the creature. If you have to spend BG (Abrupt Decay), or W + basic land (PtE) to remove a 1G, that is not "dying to removal". Strictly speaking Goyf dies to removal, but actually your removal is dying to Goyf.
Vindicate would definitely see a lot of play, due to its universality. It's almost strictly better Fulminator mage (can't recur it with K-command), but that is maindeckable, so you can actually runaway with game in game 1. Imagine opening on the play Turn 1 - IoK, Turn 2 - Goyf, Turn 3 - Vindicate their land. No longer you need bad cards like Dreadbore, that suck against manlands. Admittedly, color pairing is a bit awkward, but I think Vindicate would make some sort of Mardu or Esper competitive.
The simple truth is reactive strategies aren't going to work in modern. On of the hallmarks of them are hard counters with a broad target base and are cheap. 3 mana is too much for a counterspell to cost and Counterspell is just too universal for the format. Is there a happy medium somewhere, IDK. Modern is a active aggressive format right now and pretty much since its inception. Draw go magic wasn't much fun to play against and Modern as a format was kinda designed to remove that aspect from the game.

It's much harder to answer all of Modern's diverse threats over 15 rounds than it is to ask the same proactive question for those 15 rounds. This has always been an issue in Modern, but GP Indy really put it on display.
I'm not sure about the other GPs but at GP Guangzhou a lot of the Japanese pros were on Infect(as well as some foreign teammates). Other top players were on Abzan Company, a Grishoalshoal, a Thing in the Ice, etc. Most of the Jund players were long-time Jund players. I was 6-0 against Jund (on Jeskai Nahiri) and I know a lot of the infect players beat up on Jund as well.
If you don't have the top players with tiebreakers and high level play skills on fair decks then you aren't likely to see these fair decks at the top all the time. I wouldn't be super worried about it. If a bunch of pros were on Jund or Nahiri then that would have better showings.

Banning bolt makes Burn better because most decks that benefit from bolt are snapcaster decks. Banning bolt makes Jeskai/Mardu/Jund weaker but it make linear creatures strats way better.

What are you talking about Vindicate would see play in modern for sure. IT HITS LANDS. The issue with Anguished unmaking is that it doesn't hit lands and it costs life. It should have hit lands for costing life.

If your primary source of income is competitive Magic, you have an incentive to complain about a format being too big and wide-open.

Stuff like that annoys me. I get that they don't want modern as a PT format and I respect that (to a point) because it directly effects them and only them, but GP aren't really for established pros. It is for the rank and file players and it is hugely popular among them. Modern has consistently had some some the biggest GPs and pulls the most viewership on coverage. Asking for it to be removed as a GP format is hugely selfish and doesn't serve the interests of legion of fans modern has.

I'm not saying they made bad deck choices. I just wanted to highlight the fact that there are a lot of factors at play here. If top players were on Jund or Jeskai you would see those decks performing. Instead, they wanted to try other decks. I had no byes and finished in the money with Jeskai. Deck felt great all day, yes I avoided a lot of bad match-ups but that's not always the case.

Honestly some of the pros on twitter cannot stomach Modern in it's current state at the GP level, Ben Stark wishes it's removed from GPs and Kai Budde realized how stupid he was for wanting the format to stay on the Pro Tour.

Banning bolt makes Burn better because most decks that benefit from bolt are snapcaster decks. Banning bolt makes Jeskai/Mardu/Jund weaker but it make linear creatures strats way better.

What are you talking about Vindicate would see play in modern for sure. IT HITS LANDS. The issue with Anguished unmaking is that it doesn't hit lands and it costs life. It should have hit lands for costing life.

If your primary source of income is competitive Magic, you have an incentive to complain about a format being too big and wide-open.
In the yard: RUG Delver, Kiki-Chord, Grixis Twin, Mardu Control, Smallpox, Jeskai Control, Jeskai Delver, Assault Loam, Elves, Deathcloud, Eggs, Storm
I'm not saying they made bad deck choices. I just wanted to highlight the fact that there are a lot of factors at play here. If top players were on Jund or Jeskai you would see those decks performing. Instead, they wanted to try other decks. I had no byes and finished in the money with Jeskai. Deck felt great all day, yes I avoided a lot of bad match-ups but that's not always the case.
