What are any of you looking for? Should Wizards not have printed the Eldrazi creatures they did (which are 100% fine in Standard and Limited, ya know, the sets they make all of their money from and are extremely popular), or pre-banned Eye and Temple (INFURIATING the community before there was even a problem)?
Probably take lands if they knew it would be a problem (if it's true they did or actually didn't because they don't test). It's better to prevent the problem than solving it after it already caused a complete mess. I'm not against Eldrazi creatures, they are fine-let them have fun in Standard, but in conjunction with Eye and Temple they are obviously too strong and put whole Modern on the head. It's still fine when we know Wizards will act against Eldrazi in the April but we could not go through all this Eldrazi menace.
Do you honestly think the modern playerbase would have been fine with preventative LAND bans (ones that effect a tier 1/1.5 deck no less!)? People are angry over things like JACE not ever getting to see play in modern, I can't imagine the outcry over a potentially innocuous looking preventative ban like that.

If Wizards would test it and it would be proven too strong then I believe it would be better to ban them before they enter format rather than wait and act when it causes problems. Maybe I'm wrong but I thing that (that's in general not just in Magic) it's better to prevent a problem if you can then let it happen and trying to solve it then.
Frankly, I would agree with you if they placed more emphasis on Modern as a serious format as well as the eternals and looked at bringing up Standard power level up slightly to enable more decks such as 2 drop Lords. In practice and how they allocate resources as a business, I side with them ultimately as their focus has been more successful on the business end as the game grows more successful and they're trying to reach out to more demographics as they have grown globally.
We are seeing a reprint set outside of the summer set, this is a good trend if they rotate Eternal Masters and Modern Masters yearly. The real focus I feel is on product that creates a better entry level barrier for the format. We need preconstructed decks that can be easily built and offer staples cheaply or at least at a price point that is easily obtainable.
Considering the current system with Modern, the format is resilient and the company can adapt. This isn't the time period where Magic will die, it is a transition period similar to TC.
If development was brought onto card banning, we would see a conservative approach to the power level of Modern and we would see an expanding ban list rather than a more liberal one that we have now. Standard and Limited is a developer power level led format. Modern, Legacy, and Vintage are player led for power level in what we can find out. Those formats are our responsibility. Commander belongs to the rules council and the public and local gaming groups. Cube belongs to the Cube owner.
However, there is one option that we can discuss. Store bans. It was done before in the past, and if people feel that need they can do as they please as you can now sanction near anything.

Life is a beautiful engineer, yet a brutal scientist.

For me, I would have thought that they would be fairer when it came to the creature design, and actually paid consideration to colors. (or technically, color costs since the eldrazi are devoid)
For example TKS should have had black in its cost. 2BC is a lot less broken and wouldn't be turn 2 castable. Smasher should have Red and Green at the minimum for its pseudo-hexproof ability along with haste and trample. 2GRC is perfectly reasonable given the card's power level. And Mimic? Wouldn't have affected its playability all that much in Standard if it had cost a simple and completely reasonable 1C, and a lot of pain could have been avoided in Modern.
They went all-out to make Eldrazi "splashable" in existing decks, but really went overboard and made them horribly efficient and easy to cast. Siege Rhino only costs 4, but 3 out of that 4 is not easy to achieve. The same should have applied to TKS and friends.
