I have to say... With every set there's a bunch of people who have been playing magic for like 15 minutes clamoring about how this new set is the worst ever and Wizards hates modern/legacy/vintage. I'm usually the one sitting back and thinking "we got 2-3 new staples, a half-dozen cards that are good in the right deck, and some toys for janky decks... seems about right."
This set does seem below average. I see:
Ulamog, the ceaseless hunger: tron obviously, but probably just a 1-of. Gideon, ally of zendikar: This will see occasional play. It works as a control finisher and a 1-of or board card for midrange. Stasis snare: Someone pointed out this deals with emrakul at instant speed. Board/meta card. retreat to coralhelm: People will try it with knight as a quasi-twin card. Then they'll realize they're already in blue and they should just play twin. Drana, liberator of malakir: With evasion & 3cc, this is better than people think. On top of that, if this guy connects, 1st strike means the rest of your army gets +1/+1 BEFORE combat damage! Any orzhov deck will at least consider it, although 3-color decks will have trouble justifying BB1. Zulaport cutthroat: In some decks this is better than blood artist, and people LOVE to brew with that card. It'd be even better if it was a zombie, but being human and an ally is relevant with cavern of souls crumble to dust: Nothing new here, but it IS strictly better than sowing salt. Nettle drone: I smell a really janky combo deck with a bunch of 0-cost artifacts or with heartless summoning. Woodland wanderer: I stand by it... this card loves any deck running noble hierarch. Little kid junk or naya zoo will test it at a minimum. lumbering falls: Very hard to interact with, but needs a home.
Finally, I know allies got some toys. I don't know anything about allies in modern though, so I won't comment on it.
I'm good with the number of fringe cards, but I don't see any new staples at all. Usually there's at least ONE. And usually the fringe cards aren't quite so fringe. Oh well... saves me some cash!
I don't think Nettle Drone and Heartless Summoning play very well together... may wanna check the toughness on the drone and the -1/-1 clause for summoning

good point. I still think there's a terrible and hilarious combo deck there. nettle drone + puresteel paladin + a bunch of craptastic 0-cost equipment?
I don't think Nettle Drone and Heartless Summoning play very well together... may wanna check the toughness on the drone and the -1/-1 clause for summoning
Right. I think using it as is in modern cheerios is probably fine though. Gives you redundancy, and something you can actually cast on turn 3 (paradise mantle, and mox opal are in the deck)
Woodland wanderer: I really like this guy. I think on average it'll be a 5/5 Vigilance Trample for 4 mana. I don't really see it being played in Junk or Jund, but it could help RUG aggro?
Brutal Expulsion: I think this card has real potential. I foresee it being played as a 1-of in the side.
I still am having fun with Sphinx's Tutelage in CherriOs. The issue with that is the deck really wants another play set of Pure Steel Paladin and not another win condition. The deck has plenty win cons and not enough usable engines.
You sure that works? Cloudstone Curio says "nonartifact".
Anyway. Monastery Mentor is better in cheeri0s. You don't have to splash red for it.
This is what happens when a green Mage tries out ideas with blue and red :). I'll remove comment to not sidetrack discussion.
Cherrios is a fun deck...I was hoping they would get something possibly fun with Kor; but unfortunately no. I don't play the deck, but I know many really enjoy it; and many feel it's just one card away from being extremely competitive. It's only a matter of time.
In all honesty, BFZ added next to nothing to Modern...even the fringe cards are fringe even for fringe decks. Who knows...maybe we'll see "Modern Eldrazi" someday
Playing millions of cards every turn... Slowly and systematically obliterating any chance my opponent has of winning... Clicking the multitude of locking mechanisms into place... Not even trying to win myself until turn 10+ once I have nigh absolute control... Watching my opponent desperately trying to navigate the labyrinthine prison that I've constructed... Seeing the light of hope fade and ultimately extinguished in an excruciatingly slow manner... THAT'S fun Magic.
We have 2-3 users that are dramatically making this thread incomprehensible and non-productive for anyone else to possibly join in the discussion. This needs to change.
Every time I see [ktkenshinx] post in here, I get the impression of a stern dad walking in on a bunch of kids trying to do something dumb and just shaking his head in disappointment.
Near Mint: The same as Slightly Played, but we threw some Altoids in the box we stored it in to cover up the scent of dead mice. Slightly Played: The base condition for all MTG cards. This card looks OK, but there’s one minor annoying ding in it that will always irritate and distract you whenever you draw it. Moderately Played: This card looks like it survived the Tet Offensive tucked inside the waistband of GI underwear. It may smell like it, too. Heavily Played: This card looks like the remains of Mohammed Atta’s passport after 9/11. It may be playable if you double-sleeve it to stop the chunks from falling out. The condition formerly known as "Washing Machine Grade" Damaged: This card is the unfortunate victim of a Mirrorweave/March of the Machines/Chaos Confetti/Mindslaver combo.
[M]aking counterfeit cards is the absolute height of dishonesty. Ask yourself this question: Since most people...are totally cool with the use of proxies...what purpose do [high] quality counterfeit cards serve?
Question: if you vial in Strangler in response to Violent Outburst can you snatch Living End before your opponent is able to cast it?
AFAIK, you wouldn't have the opportunity.
Violent Outburst would push onto the stack an instance of Cascade. If you were to respond to the Cascade, there'd be nothing but any previously exiled cards to diddle with (and that's like what, Simian Spirit Guides? You really want to give them more bodies?). If you let the Cascade pop out of the stack, then Cascade goes off as an atomic operation with no ability to interrupt to the exiling and casting process.
By the time you'd be permitted to vial in Strangler, Living End would've already left exile for the stack. I think any other cards exiled during Cascade might also be moved back to the library at this point, but I'd clarify with a judge or RA on the matter.
I think the most important thing about this set is that we finally broke the "no exile zone interaction" taboo. Adding a whole new resource pool to manage usually takes time to process by players deckbuilders and changes meta a lot afterwards.
And we just had example in delve which warranted bannings and spawned Grixis.
Also since this is no longer a taboo who knows what interactions we'll see with exile zone in future.

There is a taboo. You're not allowed to interact with your own exile zone.

Though if they start to print a lot of cards that interacts this way then the whole idea of an Exiled zone loses some of its value. Deglamer and Bant Charm effects then suddenly becomes a lot stronger than Path to Exile and Revoke Existence effects. But I don't think they'll make that mistake.
Sanctum of Ugin turns Myr Enforcer into a creature tutor ? If by turn 3 you have Sanctum , 2 other lands, and at least 5 artifact (including artifact lands) you can cast Enforcer, search for another enforcer and cast it too . . .

It's no taboo. Plenty of cards do that: Misthollow Griffin, Pull from Eternity, Mirror of Fate, Runic Repetition, Torrent Elemental (the cards I know of) + all the Wishes before they changed the rules (Glittering Wish + friends)
