Feel like modern deck prices jumped a good $250 because of war of the spark and modern horizons. New karn has warped sideboards to a degree, at least in the short term. I know things will settle into place but not liking all of the changes right now.
(I already know the answer to this, but my bullheaded self needs to hear it from others.)
What do you think about buying Teferi, Time Raveler and Karn, the Great Creator? My LGS is selling Teferi at $18 and Karn at $14, which is way higher than I can get elsewhere. But I have a bunch of Store Credit, so I almost don't care. Then again, I have no need for them any time soon. I need 3 more Karn and 3 more Teferi, as I was able to buy them at $10 a piece at another store, but that's all they had in stock.

I preordered a playset of karn for like $13 each by the time I pulled the trigger and don't regret it at all. The card has been an absolute blast to play with. It's really such a great 4 mana play if you can keep him around.
Teferi is so strong and he's showing up in places that I didn't expect at first. (Jeskai saheeli, spirits, etc.). I expected him in control but he shuts down a lot of stuff. I can't tell the last time I've seen just two generically good rares in a set that really had my gears turning like these two. I'm on the prowl for 3 more teferi myself because he was preordering for a good bit (and for good reason).
Imo blow the store credit, I can't see the cards going anywhere but up baring reprints in challenger decks next year. After rotation little teferi is probably going to be obnoxious in control mirrors (we lose contempt eventually in standard). Look at vivien reid's price tag. Yeah she's a mythic from a core set, but she shot up to triple the price and has a lot less use/impact than little tef.
I also think WAR nissa is poised to move up some fwiw.
I think T3feri is going to go up in price for the foreseeable future. It's not a control card really; it's an anti-control card. It shuts off counterspells, combat tricks, and any instant speed answers. It's being used in any deck (especially combos) that can cast him, as a shield of protection for their shenanigans. He creates awful, but effectively disruptive gameplay and is not going anywhere any time soon. Expect him to stay expensive and get worse.
Do you see the prices going up even with the new wave of War of the Spark boxes coming out soon? A friend at my LGS says that there will more supply at that time, thus the prices of individual cards should come down.

It may take a dip, but it's likely going to stay $15-20 min for its life in Standard, and likely drift to $25+ once WAR is out of print. I have 3 copies I got for about $10 each and look to be jamming them in some degenerate nonsense.
Horizon lands keep dropping. What do people think is the bottom there?
Color dependent but I think they're more useful than the fast lands (blooming marsh etc) for any deck than wants to have a game plan post t4 and has an average cmc of 2-3. That's a pretty wide array of decks and I'd be surprised if they don't eventually sit higher than that cycle in time (personal opinion).
Bottom price is very dependent on if any more cards from MH1 end up like the new bridgevine cards where significant chunks of EV start to shift around the box. I can't really say but I'll be picking up two of each for $10-15, sub 10 and I'm biting on a playset.
Even after an expodition and a reprint horizon canopy still had a pretty high price tag. Granted it was the only one but some of these color combos have notoriously run low cmc curves (UR for example) where you would even fit from the drawing.
I think GB is weird to try and gauge because the color combo has gotten a significant shot in the arm recently with CA (tireless tracker, courser of kruphix, arguel's blood fast, glint-sleeve siphoner). Wotc seems to be throwing a solid piece of CA at these colors for the past few years and I'm not sure it's going to slow down (explore mechanic and the current green walkers in standard).

so, useless in modern
horizon lands are overrated.
they are pretty good. but you on average you need 1-2 while needing 6-8 fetch.
i think the bottom is around 10 (+-5)
Lol true but doesn't mean you don't want to be prepared for mana flood. I do agree a fetch/shock/basics will eat up your first 12-16 slots in almost all decks. That doesn't leave much room for utility lands.
I learned this many years ago when our local Pro Player (pure Control player) used to run Kithkin at FNM (just to prove that he can beat scrubs with anything, not just Control). He always ran 4 Horizon Canopy, which I questioned at first. Then I quickly realized it just gives more options with very little drawback.

I feel you. My friend who doesn't even play that much says that if they hit $10, he's buying literally thousands of dollars worth of them. I believe him because he managed to get 8 of the 10 War of the Spark Mythic Boxes that he ordered (through varying identities of course). I told him they won't hit that. But it got me thinking. I may be willing to invest around $500 myself towards a bunch of these if they do in fact go down to that price.
*As of right now, I actually need 4 Nurturing Peatland foils for my Elves deck to replace Horizon Canopies. It's one of the few decks that I actually really enjoy playing in Modern right now.
**I should also state that Ravenous Trap seems to be on the move (again) a bit. I'm telling you, any card that helps deal with the new Hogaak Vine deck is definitely going to be precious material in the next few months. Humans is probably one of the few decks that can somewhat hang with it, so Humans could possibly go up as well, but that's a bit of a stretch.

Wow. I grabbed two Teferi's Puzzle Box like 3 days ago for like $6 a piece, and now they're something like $25-35! Now, I don't actually as good as people think. It doesn't answer the board and it's not a win condition in of itself. It's incredibly powerful, but having jammed Narset/Box in a couple shells, it's only 1/3 of the battle. You also need to be sure their board/GY doesn't kill you, and you still need something to actually win the game.
Do you have a deck list for a list with Teferi's Puzzle Box? I saw the card spike a bunch and I was curious as to what it is being played in specifically. (In addition to a buyout of course.)
The other option is I can probably type Teferi's Puzzle Box in mtgtop8 and see what deck lists pop up.

I'm currently shoving her into a Blue Moon list. Mostly because I haven't bought the other cards needed to build UW on MTGO. But I imagine she would do fine in a UW list with board wipes, Colonnades, Jace/Big Teferi, or some other slow grindy wincon that doesn't require keeping cards in hand. It's been OK. Some great games against jank and fair/interactive decks. Not good enough for me to play in paper in a real "top tables modern meta" though.
Edit: I should add that I have boxes in paper as well (the same 7th ed ones, because I love classic artifact frames), but testing online has told me there's no reason to fight uphill battles for a meme lock when I can just kill people with Birds and Things.
This was my search from 5-1-19 to 6-14-19. Surely this can't be the only reason, outside of a buyout, that Teferi's Puzzle Box spiked? Odd to me. I guess it's more speculation of what it does with Narset, Parter of Veils more than someone actually going out and getting results that show up on mtgtop8?

It was also recently shown on an SCG head to head, which was shown between matches on the SCG Con, I think. It looked real good against Phoenix in a UW shell. But again, it needs something else to stay alive and something else to win the game. So it's a combo that takes a bunch of slots that doesn't keep you alive and doesn't win the game on its own.
Horizon lands have been weird the past week. I bought two sunbaked canyons tuesday at $19 apiece, as they had risen from previous lows of 15-16. I only got the pair to hedge, lo and behold now they are $13-14. I think nobody really knows how to price these this early on - some sellers are looking at horizon canopy and licking their chops while others realize this is a full cycle in a print-to-demand set at rare. These ain't time spiral days, folks.
My only concern BlueTronFTW, is that the set isnt opened enough because of Core 2020 getting fully spoiled NEXT WEEK.
I just worry its going to pull away from this set getting cracked as much as it would, keep the prices higher than anticipated.
If we hit $15 on Fiery Islet, I probably pull the trigger on a few at least.
This. This is what is most concering to me regarding secondary prices. We not only have a set that is double the price (potentially overpriced) but we also have the next set being released within a month. Print to Demand means nothing if there is no demand.
Even Conspiracy 2 has some higher priced cards partly due to not being opened very much. And that was a normal priced set whose main demand is Commander with a few Legacy cards. For a set that has a number of cards aimed at Modern and Commander, whose price is too high, where interest will likely wane, I can see that, long term, the prices on some singles are going to be astronomical.
I am certainly hoping that people or stores keep cracking boxes to sell singles but it looks like that isn't all that profitable right now. Likely, it will only become profitable when the set is no longer available for sale.
