Yeah, who thought Narset would be the star of the set. No one blinked an eye when she was spoiled. Definitely missed that boat. She's being played in all major formats.
There was lots of talk about her almost immediately at my LGS. But we have a lot of various blue cantrip decks, and many who also play cantrip-heavy Legacy decks, so she seemed like a hit from the getgo. We all saw that it would hose our decks and be great in the mirrors.
I'm just happy she's an uncommon, so she is dirt cheap and widely available.
Hmm, asking since I'm not sure what to do..
Are the jap alternate art walkers a limited thing. Or are they eventually going to flood the market? If they are going to be limited in print, I'm getting one now. But will wait if the print run would be large. Thanks.
They are supposed to be in upcoming FNM promo packs that are replacing whatever the current giveaway system is.
I see. thanks for that. I guess it's ok to wait now for the prices to bottom a little more.
I feel you on the alternate art Planeswalkers from War of the Spark. I've been fiending for them as well and have a seller from Japan on FB for $240 for 1 of all 36 of them. I've been so close to pulling the trigger and probably will once I sell some of the cards that have spiked recently. I wish I had patience, as I'm not even really planning on using any of them any time soon.

Time for some reprints.
Yeah, it's pretty ridiculous. Whenever something goes down because of reprints, something else goes way up. I'm personally at the point where my will to sell out because of these prices is trumping my laziness to put up a list of the cards I want to sell.
(Most of this is reserve list spikes, as opposed to Modern though.)

Narset is a sideboard of the UW control in my sig, so in active use. The only thing preventing me from getting one is the thought that I might get her today at 20, then a few weeks later she is 6-7$. My money is not unlimited, and I plan to save as much as possible.
What are people's opinions on these.. ice fang coatl and yawgmoth, would their price increase or decrease weeks after release?
you only buy from SCG right? i wouldnt pick up ice-fang coatls at SCG prices (4x more than preordering them on card kingdom, and 2x more than tcgplayer) . maybe it sees some play in a snow deck that doesnt exist yet, but even if it does its just that 1 deck. i cant see any demand for the card in other formats.
as for yawgmoth...yeah id wait on that one. im very skeptical about it being able to command a 35 dollar price tag, even at mythic. unless it turns out its craaaazy good in commander or something i dont see it going UP while its in print. less sure on whether it will go down much and when that would happen. IMO its low risk to just wait
forgot to respond to the buy only from SCG part. Yeah, these days I just buy from them almost exclusively. The habit came from seeing a few people in our facebook group get scammed with fake cards after they bought from certain online stores in ebay.

Off-topic but this is the sorta thing i'm going to miss about this site. All the vets of this thread know that you buy from SCG exclusively and tailor responses accordingly. I'll miss that community feel to it.
yeah, after a few years with everyone in this site I think people are already a bit familiar with each other.

The problem is the availability of the boxes. I think they had a printing snafu from the new card stock getting introduced and they didn't get the Japanese boxes out on the first wave. The next wave is on the newer stock.

Narset is not likely to go down. We're basically hitting peak supply over the next 2 weeks for War of the Spark. After that, it'll be a slow upwards climb. Unless the mulligan rule some how shifts people off of the card, she's here to stay. Annoyingly so (I only play Storm these days regardless of the format. So she can get bent :p)
I see.. thanks for the reply. It she seems to have been printed deliberately to hose faithless looting, but she also chokes other decks that like to draw cards. Glad I was able to get a playset when she was 1$. Right now, I just want to get one of her jap alternate art copies. Probably start of July, when receive my salary can get one copy.
Peak market supply could be 1-2 months from release, if I had to guess. I'm glad I held off on pre-ordering a box for $220. The canopy lands seem like they were meant to push the set in the event that reception of the set was mixed yet prices have been tanking since the end of spoilers. I figured they'd rebound once supply from pre-release entered the market, but that doesn't look likely. I'm actually curious about actual pre-release attendance. I figured I'd head up to my LGS and participate just to try and get some early canopy lands, but then I read it was a $50 buy in.
Scion is dangerously close to drogskol captain and the tribe is a couple more disruptive creatures away from being back in force in modern. Even without any key role players in years except snapcaster mage (which isn't even a faerie) the deck will still place decently well in the oddball tournament.
Scion can become a $20 rare overnight if they slip and print some more power for the tribe. Heck all spirits really needed was a 2 cmc lord. Granted spirits is a way more disruptive tribe right now but they play very similar. mausoleum wanderer is just a silly magic card all around so I can't see a faerie ever competing with it.
Fae really need a decent one drop with some muscle, they ever get that and goodbye scion. faerie seer is a good card, but I dunno if it's what they needed. The deck leans hard on spelltutter sprite imho.
thanks both for the replies. Hmm, reasonable enough explanations.
Ordered a throatslitter at 4$ slightly played and a scion for 3$ slightly played from scg tonight.
The new ninjas from MH1 got me pumped to make a ninja deck. hehe
Card Kingdom had Force of Negation preordering at $25.99, and now it's up to $34.99. I was waiting for them to finish a buylist order so I can just use store credit, but it's going to cost me an extra $36 for this playset. Yikes. That said, I've been playing it as a 4-of in RUG Delver online and it's been very good.
EDIT: $39.99. Up $15 in 24 hours for a card that isn't even legal yet.
I can't say I'm pleased to see you and must warn you I may have to do something about it.

Compare with Hogaak, the Arisen Necropolis, which has also spiked to around $30. For anyone that really, really needs them, you can get them for around $25 on tcgplayer. I considered it myself, but am taking a hiatus from Magic starting on the 15th, which is 1 day before they can ship. So there's really no point, especially since the card can only go down from here.

Welp, I disregarded my own better judgement and decided to check in late Sunday to see if my LGS had any boxes following pre-release. They did and I caved. I'll list the notable pulls, but long story short is I find it highly unlikely that stores will be able to continue selling packs/boxes at the going rate once the set is officially released. Considering pre-release was essentially a "soft launch" in that boxes could actually be sold early, allowing a higher than normal supply to enter the market before official release, prices are trending down despite there being actual supply of singles. Granted, all it would take is one or two cards finding their way into a solid T1 deck or $1-$2 rares to find homes to raise the value of a box, but I'd just caution anyone about pulling the trigger on any non-foil until some trends emerge. I rarely crack packs, but I've always enjoyed picking up a box of each Masters set and MH1 feels like a spiritual successor. Anyway, here we go:
+ handful foil tokens, X rares currently <$3, solid stack of sweet slivers, & 5-6 uncommons I'll use in EDH
Solid box in terms of personal and entertainment value; Urza + sliver were both on my list of singles to eventually pick up for edh and a foil canopy land was pretty killer. If I opened this box without knowing what it cost, I'd say it was a fantastic above average box. And while I normally don't expect to get more value out of a box vs retail cost, this seemed like one which probably came close. I'm just curious to see where the market is at two weeks from now as supply/demand suggests single prices won't magically spike once more supply is available to the masses.
Tl;Dr: Wasn't thrilled about the set after spoilers, but picked up a box and had a good time. Lucked out finding a foil horizon land + quite a few cards I planned on picking up as singles (albeit mostly for edh). However, the odds of your foil rare being a horizon land are slim and I'm skeptical of the market's ability to sustain single prices enough to keep boxes/boosters propped up at their current price points.

yeah at first blush that looks to be an above average box.
tbh im not sure how prices are going to pan out in the next few weeks. box prices are somewhat set by the distributors, so we should see box EV trend towards the 180-200 range. the only way i see horizon packs/boxes going down from their current point is if stores went too deep on the product, its moving slowly, and they cant afford to have that capital tied up so they sell at a loss. certainly plausible, especially if core 2020 spoilers really wow people.
as for singles for most of the rares and mythics i expect a holding pattern of the 'obvious' cards like the horizons lands, FoN, etc being inflated until any in the 5-10 range show up in competitive play. what this means though is that plenty of cards are currently being overshadowed, so you might end up in a worse position if you wait for a card to be discovered.
the way i think we should be hoping it will turn out is where there are twice as many rares/mythics that are sought after with prices more typical to a standard set, rather than the rares/mythics just costing twice as much. time will tell if that turns out being the case.

OK, I think these cards are going to get stupid, hopefully I'm wrong but since there was no way to catch these at 'low' prices, whens the optimal time for Force of Negation and Fiery Islet?
OK, I think these cards are going to get stupid, hopefully I'm wrong but since there was no way to catch these at 'low' prices, whens the optimal time for Force of Negation and Fiery Islet?
i think you should definitely wait on fiery islet. its holding the highest price tag among the horizon lands, but URx decks will be playing 1-2 copies at most (or none at all cause the lifeloss is too big a downside).
force of negation is more of a wildcard. before i would have said that it was on track to go down to at least 15ish in the first few weeks after release. unfortunately hype/fomo caught on from a minimal showing in the mtgo challenge, and with the 8% kickback on tcgplayer the rush to buy made it look like there was a supply shortage when really only qualified sellers can post preorders; so it spiked $10 overnight. so now the card has an even higher starting point.
id think its fairly low risk to at least wait until after release when real competition/undercutting kicks in
