APPROVED POSTS
Asking what cards to hold, sell, and buy.
(e.g. "With the PTQ season coming up, should I sell my Twin playset now or hold onto it?")
Constructively discussing the rising price of Modern staples.
(e.g. "The rising prices will prove a barrier to entry in this format; fetches cost almost as much as duals!")
Constructively theorizing about how Wizards can lower prices for the format.
(e.g. "One option is for Wizards to rush out an MM2 style product every 6 months to stabilize prices.")
Posts in this category are totally okay as long as you are also following the forum rules. So if you have an otherwise constructive post and then call someone a whining little ***** at the end of your post, you can still get infracted even though everything else was probably fine.
The following posts are not allowed. Users who engage in this behavior will be warned or infracted accordingly.
Stay on MODERN Prices, not Magic finance generally.
No talking about "Magic is dying," the Reserved List, etc.
No discussion of fake cards other than to warn players about buying/spotting them
This detracts from Modern price discussion and gets people into dangerous waters.
DON'T RESPOND TO TROLLING/FLAMING/SPAMMING. Just report it!
If you get involved in a flame war you can get infracted too, regardless of who started it.
No brag posts
(e.g. "Just bought 4 Goyfs for $20 each bros. Good deal?")
Personal criticism not related to Magic
(e.g. "If you got a real job and budgeted better then you could afford fetchlands.")
No card creation
(e.g. "All of this would be solved if they printed my fixed fetchland variant here...")
No reprint talk if the reprint isn't already in the format
(e.g. "Fetches would go down if WotC just reprinted Price of Progress")
No banlist talk
(e.g. "Time to ban Goyf; it's too expensive and needs to be banned.")
With Modern becoming more popular and prices becoming more contentious, this thread has gotten a lot more traffic. It has also gotten very heated at times with multiple users earning infractions (and the thread even being shut down for a weekend). These rules, although maybe a little strict looking, will hopefully keep the discussion in line and keep posters on topic.
How much higher can Snapcaster Mage go in the short term (1-6 months)? I have a pair (one I bought pre-price spike and the other was part of a trade) and although I do not need a full set right now I want it for the future. I am unsure if should get the other two now or will the price get significantly worse in the coming months?

I will always firmly stand by the belief that Magic is a game first and a collectable second.

I have a feeling that it is going to spike soon. Since it has been going down in price a little, now would be a good time to buy them.
I had not even realized it has seen a small price downturn. I guess the better question on my part should have been how likely is it to surpass its previous high?

If you want to play with snapcaster, I think I would buy as mint a whole playset as possible--it will probably go up during modern season, but it sees play in legacy and vintage too and I don't really see it being reprinted unless its in an auxillery set or they bring flashback back (which I don't think will happen for a while after innistrad + [big plus] they might not want snapcaster in standard ever again due to power/repetition)
I got a playset on rotation for $15, and I'd say as long as you can get them for under 25 in decent condition it'll be a good buy if you're willing to wait for the investment to mature.
I am curious what people think about dark confidant. I got a playset after modern masters came out and see that they've really only gone up a little, nothing like goyf-- Of course because of the jund nerf. I want to hold them, but I'd sell them for the right pickup--why aren't they really appearing in anything other than jund? What do people see this card actually doing in terms of performance and in terms of price?
Snapcaster is a Staple for Legacy and Modern (i personally am not involved in Vintage - so cannot tell about that) -> this enough will keep him maintain a high price tag.
I would not be surprised to see him rise up to 40€ sooner or later. For modern comparisons just look at Cryptic Command which has 3 printings while Snappy only has a single printing.
My advice would be to hold on to them at least until the upcoming modern season. If you need some cash, that would be a wise point to liquidate them if you really want to.
I personally would just hold on to at least 1 playset though.

The great Eldrazi Overlords will return to the Modern World.
I feel like Dark Confidant has hit a temporary ceiling. Yes it is an awesome card, but it is just do damn easy to get off the board AND (for the moment) Black is not getting a lot of play time in Modern/Legacy top 8's so people are not paying so much attention to the card.

Hi Community,
Lookin some insight on the following: Liliana of the Veil - definitely missed boat on this, but I REALLY want a playset (pet card). Right now I can buy them TCGplayer for like $55 LP. Should I bite the bullet and get them? Thing is, I don't know if i'd have a deck for her for quite some time (at least a year). So what do you think will happen to her price over the next 365 days?
Tarmogoyf - I need to get a playset of these guys, and right now it looks like the lowest would be $165 each. I would really like to wait on these, and can do so over a few years. What are the thoughts on a reprint or price fluctuation over that time frame?

I would say that Dark Confidant is also more narrow in the sense that you cant play him in every black deck since he will kill you if you dont build your deck with that in mind. Snapcaster Mage on the other hand is all upside. You only need blue mana and instant and sorceries for him to be great. And blue decks have no problem fulfilling those things in general(exceptions exist).
Lili has hit a price plateau for the moment and it is probably a safe time to invest if you want them. It is doubtful her price will be going down much anytime soon pending an unexpected reprint announcement.

Snapcaster probably will reach the $50 mark in season. It is currently about $35 give or take a buck or two, so you have a bit of room.
On Bob, $75-$80 is quite high for a card reprinted and sparingly used. I doubt there will be much upward movement on Bob unless something comes out before Modern season to make him desirable by the masses.
I would like to propose a theory that blood moon will not see an increase until fetches are re-printed.
I think modern will see increases in stable mana-bases as people introduce the temples to the format and people decide on the power of two-color mana bases and simple 4 fetch light splash mana-bases. I think temple of epiphany will be a modern staple if the current meta maintains itself or reappears post-theros printing.
I don't know if the modern player base is budget minded like the commander players are, but I think if the fetches take a while to reprint we'll see increases in all lands other than the shocks/fetches because people may 'settle' or build their mana bases to accomodate other lines of play other than fetch shock. fast basic check is pretty solid, so is basic check, or basic filter check, ect.
I am planning to slowly build a Melira Pod deck, and with the upcomming GP, which cards you think would spike if Melira does good at the GP? I have seen that Pod did spike a little after the last GP, and it is going back now, is it the card I should get first?

Honestly, judging from the price trajectory of Modern staples, I would not be surprised if Snapcaster Mage reaches goyf-level prices. If you want them for a deck, I would say get them now. At the very latest, get them before Grand Prix Minnesota, which starts on May 9, 2014. You can expect another round of price spikes after this.
in on first page. still waiting for MM2. snapcaster should be stable cause I don't think we'll get any more free spells for a while and bolt is already in the format

Snappy won't jump to goyf level spikes. There are far too many of them for that. I could see it coming closer to Dark Confidant but not for quite a while.

Agreed. But allow me to clarify. I was saying long-term. For short-term, I would still get them before Grand Prix Minnesota. But the longer time passes, the more expensive it's gonna get. Goyf was at one point a bulk bin rare, and now it's $190. It didn't jump to $190 right away, it slowly increased over time, and the conservative print run of Modern Masters, along with the alternate art and change to mythic rarity, did not help with goyf prices.
