Right? It's typical for her to go up before every single B&R announcement, but nothing to this extreme. After comparing the listing prices to market prices & eBay recently sold, I take back the part about it being a buyout. It appears that vendors either de-listed their inventory or jacked up the price; considering there's zero regulations on the secondary market and anyone at WotC could theoretically shoot a tex with early unban details to someone at SCG, CF, etc, it looks like this could be the time her ban is finally lifted.
Do spikes like this usually follow the community's high approval rate for an unban? I started watching more of the finances when Jace and BBE came off, so I missed whether or not his spoiling was signal enough for the community or not.
Considering she spiked every January for 3 years in a row (2014, 2015, 2016), it's just a thing that happens when where is an anticipated unban.
Either way, I'm prepared with 8x copies of the GP Promo, 4x copies of the WWK standard, 2x Batterskull, 2x Sword of Feast & Famine, 2x Sword of Light & Shadow (1 foil), 1x Sword of Fire & Ice, 1x Sword of War & Peace. Most of those live in various Commander decks, but the extra copies are hard specs.
Absolutely; it'd be more unusual if she didn't spike prior to an announcement. However unlike previous pre-B&R announcement fluctuations, this time she literally doubled in price overnight. TCGplayer market value is still closer to the price she held earlier in the week and eBay recently sold shows few buyers who bit and bought into the price increase; this suggests that stock was de-listed or jacked up in price rather than bought out. Folks in this thread have stated numerous times, over the last month or so, how they've been picking up copies. I don't know; this time around it just seems like someone in the know had to have passed along some insider info to vendor to cause this rapid of a response without the same magnitude of actual market demand. I suppose it certainly could've been one large vendor pulling their stock *cough* SCG *cough* and others following that lead. Either way, I'm looking forward to this B&R announcement now just to see if it actually happens.
The issue with SFM is how WOTC is going to get more copies on the market to come with the Unban and its assorted Weapons. Ravnica doesn't have KOR but I guess in theory you can toss in the weapons. So what do they have left Commander? Seems like it jack the price of any White Deck massively.

It's going to be a blood bath if they unban it as far as secondary prices go for players, which is what really matters in the end. The only people who don't get hit by these are the people who have the card already (I own a playset of the zendikar original from when they were 14 a piece). Batterskull is going to go up for sure if she gets unbanned as well since he is a known partner in crime from her time in standard. Heck, it has taken forever for Ancestral Vision to finally come down from it's lofty heights and drop below 10 a piece.

I have 12 of the promo, I usually add a copy or two to every TCG purchase. I have been buying them around the $15 mark. if they are unbanned, wonderful! I will sell two playsets and keep one for myself to build with. If not, that's fine too. It will be unbanned eventually, and in a month, I should be able to pick up more $15 copies. I'm not looking to get rich off of them, but if I could turn them 1 for 1 into OG Tarmogoys and build a midrange deck just to have one, that would be sweet.

AV was the stupidest price I have actually seen. A card that spiked, saw next to no play for what, 2 years, and finally a reprint brought it down to logical levels.
That card annoyed me to no end.
SFM is as you say, going to blow some budgets if it comes off.

yeah i tried to bring up this point in the State thread, but it didnt gain much traction. if sfm is unbanned, and is even just moderately good; it could jack up white midrange decks by 300+ easily.
as for the unban itself. sure id be cool if they did it, because i chose to get a set in order to convert my store credit into something more tangible. whether i think it would be a good choice with no reprint on the horizon....i dunno. wizards is going to catch flak no matter when they unban it, so if they ever expect to they are gonna have to bite the bullet one way or another.

I just don't see SFM doing much of anything. This is a format where you can get multiple free 4/4s and 1 mana 5/5s. Why would anyone want to spend 4 mana over 2 turns for a 4/4 vigilance/lifelink? She's going to flop harder than Jace. I am going to sell mine immediately (and may do so before the announcement...)
It's going to be a blood bath if they unban it as far as secondary prices go
Just highlighting this.
And yeah, yea it will. But not only on SFM, Batterskull and some of the swords (personally, I'd expect to see a big jump on War and Peace. Being immune to Bolt and Path is a pretty big deal), it's all the surrounding cards. Just liks BBE kicked some Jund cards into orbit, SFM will kick other cards up. I'd expect to see her in UW shells the most and if so, Colonnade/Cryptic/Snapcaster probably see yet another jump. Even things like Aether Vial could see more movement if D&T perks up more.
It'll be interesting.
Along those lines, I don't want Preordain back until they have a place to put it. Foil copies are already pushing $60US and an unban will jack that through the roof. More supply first please and thanks.
Preordain is easy enough they can dump it any standard set its generic it doesn't require a theme, support or relevant race on a plane. We got plenty of Blue characters on Ravnica even just counting walkers there is Jace, Bolas, Teferi, Ral, Tezz, and Tamiyo. And multiple guilds with Blue.
The problem with SFM is Kor aren't on Ravnica of which we have 3 sets in a row and the assorted weapons you need to support SFM well don't really fit on Ravnica cause it doesn't have a real equipment theme or artifact theme which is weird really ten guilds and no one likes artifacts. Guess they can do whatever in the third set but that is a year out.

Going to do the same for mine too. Attempt to sell on first and second weeks. Although I have much less SFM related stuffs. Only 2 SFM + 2 swords Warpeace and SoFai. You and Foodchain were able to stock so many. Used all my extra resources on stockpiling fetches.. so have none left to hoard SFM's.
Hasbro/Wotc will dump SfM into whatever theme masters19 have. Some minor equipment theme will do.
It should temper the prices rise for a while. Until we get a return to return to zendikar.
I'm going to be frank: No one wants more masters sets. People want the cards reprinted, but the way they are doing them now this summer with reprinting cards in core sets and the summer supplementary sets is the way to do things. The only masters set that was done right from a value perspective was the first one and they under-printed it. On top of which, WoTC and a ton of TCG companies are trying a different print-run strategy to get the market moving. As I said elsewhere, the company is intentionally throttling back release day quantities of each set and are opening the gates on a set about 2-3 months after release.
My assumption given the Buy-a-box promo and limited release numbers is that they are trying to drive more people to buy the sealed products rather than the singles, since the release pattern will artificially inflate the prices of the singles seeing day 1 play. It doesn't impact GP / Pro-tour grinders since they will pay whatever it takes to get a deck built, but for the average joe it makes the prospect of buying singles more daunting. Heck, they are letting people buy planeswalker decks at the MTG open house this weekend and are letting people buy booster boxes from the LGS at pre-release.
Also if people want a source on the whole set release throttling, just go ask your LGS how the supply for dominaria went back at release. There were no boxes left on the shelf for people to buy for ages and there were actually more fat packs than booster boxes at my own LGS. Battlebond was insane as well, with seemingly more packs available at walmart and meijer. If someone wanted to feel like they went back to the 90s before they released chronicles, this is sort of close to that point. Plenty of Ixalan and Rivals, though.

Honestly nothing makes me not believe WOTC lines about the "Secondary Market" not factoring in more then Master Sets. They are not for new players and it shouldn't be this hard to print cards relevant in Modern and to a lesser extent Legacy if they were not concerned with such a market. EDH does just fine through the Decks and Conspiracy/Battlebond Products. I could at least for most of the modern era so lets say most of the 2000s go through the major events using WOTC own website and youtube page and string together which cards should be in a Masters Sets if the idea was most Iconic Cards for every set like they claimed.

The problem with masters sets is that they weren't for anybody at the consumer end level. They ultimately served as a card restocking system for places like Star City Games and other major singles vendors. The nasty problem that happened with the boxes is that the contained value got so horrible with them no one would touch the bloody things near the end, and it takes months or sometimes years for the value to appreciate enough to make the boxes attractive to customers. Also, the general economic outlook in the future doesn't look sunny. Part of the reason Hasbro and WoTC were smashing the masters button hardcore is that the financial buying power of everyone was up over the last few years. Now we got raised tariffs on the horizon beckoning in higher costs on imported goods, which will likely mean less money for leisurely things. Canadian buyers of MTG are directly impacted since the prices on Magic Products up there are likely going up due to the tariff unless someone else eats the cost.
I'm interested to see how the modern singles market gets hit by all this.

Also, the set that had the Fetch reprinted was a success no? Nearly everything in my UWR deck is a reprint...
Playing cards are one of the items that are getting hit going into Canada from what I've read. People were wondering if this would impact trading card games like magic the gathering, and as it turns out that is a yes for sealed product like booster boxes.
Its not like Magic specifically got targeted. Its more Canada struck back against a broad list of American Products to make a point.
Yeah, it's a result of my own countries actions at the moment. I'm not sure what kind of effect this will have on singles prices, though. Does anyone here know if their is some additional cost when buying something like a Cavern of Souls from the USA as a citizen of Canada before this point?

im surprised to see stoneforge jump so much, considering that unbans are so far away, usually taking place in january. im guessing comments from pro players helped fuel the unban craze

There is a ban/unban announcement on Monday. I’ve always been very vocal about wizards being (unjustly) scared of adding SFM to modern, but even I believe the chances of a Monday unban are greater than 50%.
This is the fourth time SFM has had nearly an identical spike for the exact same reasons. In fact, it was MORE weird that she DIDN'T spike in the past 2 years.
