I opened a Karn from a bundle yesterday and am now torn on how I feel about him. I don't play standard and nothing I play in Modern would use him. I play a lot of Commander, and he seems like a no brainer for Breya, but is it worth sitting on when I could get $60 off ebay today, right now? That's what I'm asking myself. I sat on my Jace, VP playset as he peaked and fell; thinking I'd want to play him. Now one copy sits in one commander deck, and the others in a binder in my closet. It's been so long since I actually opened anything of value outside of a Masters set (haven't cracked non-Masters packs since Khans block), that I forgot how to deal with short term, high value Standard cards outside of just blitz selling them.
sell karn. Buy fetches or any of the colder modern staples. This isn't even a contest: Even I'm selling my playset to fund some better purchases at the moment. He's seeing play across legacy, modern, and is like the cockroach that survives the atom bomb in standard. That and when more boxes get opened at the start of June he's just going to be in a downhill slope from there on out.
1. (Ravnica Allegiance): You can't keep a good esper control deck down... Or Wilderness Reclamation... or Gates...
2. (War of the Spark): Guys, I know what we need! We need a cycle of really idiotic flavor text victory cards! Jace's Triumph...
3. (War of the Spark): Lets make the format with control have even more control!
personally if opened a karn right now id sell it in a heartbeat. you said it yourself that you would hardly play it, but only you can be the judge of the value of adding a single card to one (or maybe more) of your commander decks.
the card is 100% going to go down at some point, so then the question becomes whether karns price is near its peak. for instance what if the stars align and karn appears in the top 8 of the next few SCG modern events AND sees heavy play at the pro-tour (even more than recent standard events are showing).
whatever you think that price point would be is probably close to the theoretical max the card could ever reach. then ask yourself how likely it is for those circumstances to line up. the smaller that chance the closer the card is to its peak.

Depends Karn seems pretty good for Affinity but I am not an expert on that deck. The only positive is its not showing up in Humans at all. Hollow Ones though....hmm that is more interesting.
Seems a look for Standard Decks though for the foreseeable future.

Friendly reminder that PT Dominaria (Standard) is in about 2 weeks and basically all eyes are going to be on Standard. Or, at least far more eyes than usual. This means it is a great time to buy into Modern cards, many of which are likely to keep dropping.
Protip #2: wait until tomorrow's product announcement for more info about what could be reprinted. For example, a supplemental product with Hierarch art would definitely affect her price point.

Karn won’t stay high forever. Remember challenger decks could easily reprint him in bulk for the money grab.
Challenger Decks are what not until next year? Winter at the earliest. That is a good amount of time off.
That's not that long when you're talking about what could be a $70 price swing.
Where do I get in line to get paid 10 dollars a copy for each Karn I receive?
He will swing down but it won't be anywhere near that much unless he balloons up to 100 dollars or more.

Karn is an affinity staple. Might even replace (definitely will fight for the spot with) etched champion. Card advantage, plus an x/x, at colorless, and not an artifact. And he gets played in legacy and standard? If he sticks in any decks other than affinity even challenger decks will barely touch his price (and then when dominaria isn't being printed anymore it's going to be straight up).
I got mine at $45, then I saw the scg stream with the legacy ponza and eldrazi playing him, just bit the bullet because he was just going up.

Spot on. Being a new standard toy that's found it's way into a number of decks within the format is the only reason why new Karn's value is even remotely close to KL. That's not to say new Karn won't see play in other formats once it rotates, but it certainly wouldn't be a $60 if there was no demand from Standard players. I'd sell any copy I cracked as quick as I could sleeve it.
It's how I feel too, but I dare not open my mouth since I believed it wouldn't go over $40. The odd part about Magic cards is that often when a card's prices go higher, then at that moment, the card becomes more in demand. (everybody loves to own a $60 card, even if it actually cost them $60, lol)

Guilds of Ravnica releases October 5, 2018, and will prominently feature the harmonious Selesnya (green-white), the militant Boros (red-white), the life-and-death-focused Golgari (black-green), the frazzled geniuses of the Izzet (blue-red), and the mystery of the Dimir (blue-black).
Ravnica Allegiance ratchets up the drama and releases January 2019, and will complete our travels through the guilds. Join the orderly Azorius (white-blue), the chaotic Rakdos (black-red), the wild Gruul (red-green), the experimental Simic (green-blue), and the devious Orzhov (white-black) as we reach the penultimate moment of the Gatewatch's story.
third set is the bolas showdown, and not much was revealed about it.
multicolored blocks are usually really popular, and everyone loves the guilds. hope the shocklands return with new art.

What do you all think? Will Shocklands see a bump down in price with the announcement of RtRtR? I'm thinking maybe a slight 10% loss in price is possible in the near future. Any thoughts?

With fetcbihlands and fastlands doing the heavy work, shocklands aren't even that demanded. Another big set printing may sunk their price below $10. I legitly welcome it: the more people have good standard manabases the better. But for modern it ain't too significant.
well some amount of people are certainly going to dump their spare shocks in the wake of the announcement.
not too sure about the shocks from original ravnica block. they will retain value longer, and the demand for them might actually increase at various points because the demographic that cares about stuff like artwork or foils is set apart from those who just want copies to play.
there is also the high risk spec that im sure some people are going to attempt. no matter how certain people are about shocks being in the set, it is still just an assumption at this point.

Doesn't standard demand usually raise the prices of in demand lands? Also when these hit, the cycle lands that seem popular will be rotating out thus giving Standard players another reason to want Shocks.
the demand for shocks definitely goes up. its a new subset of players looking to purchase after all. however the supply typically outpaces the demand, especially for just a rare. a third printing in a set that is sure to be extremely popular will likely hammer down the price for the next few years.

The thing is that yrs, they may see a small dip on the assumption that they'll be reprinted, and likely a 30-50% drop when reprinted. But if BFZ was any indication of reactionary spikes in prices, if they're not announced for the block, they will likely double in price.

After the price hike from the masters set fiasco if the lands don't show up in the namesake world, it's going to turn modern into an old boys club that no one will want a part of. It's already approaching that point given that the only time I see anyone buying into modern is after getting a tax return or a well planned savings venture.

How expensive is Burn isn't that usually the cheap option?
It is, the issue is the prices across the board went up so just about all the decks got more expensive. The reason this happened is that the confidence of the secondary market prices rose substantially due to the prat fall from Masters 25. If they don't reprint the shock lands in the Ravnica set, those will climb pretty substantially as well and cause the market to continue to go strong.
So IdSurge is right that there are cheap decks to get into modern, but the same can be said about legacy and we all know how much that costs. Also, keep in mind that my statement is in scope of someone suggesting the possibility of no shockland reprint. I highly doubt that wizards would skip the opportunity to reprint such a good land cycle in a return set, so more than likely I expect the modern market to actually wane a bit in the fall.
