Karn's price is going to depend heavily on how the Standard metagame shakes out. Right now the only decks that definitely want him are the WB variants and Bant Midrange. If the UW build that comes out on top is one with him in it, he'll be able to maintain a ridiculously high price, possibly reaching close to $100. If he remains a 4-of in the dominant WB archetype but falls out of favor in other places, he'll fall down to a bit above the $30 range where Scarab God and Hazoret were when they were on top of the meta. If he continues to see play in WB and is good in tier 2 standard decks and/or finds a home in non-rotating formats, he'll end up around the $50 range he's currently in.
The deal with Karn is that the power is there, but "change" in modern takes a while since the mobility of the format is much lower than standard or other formats with cheaper pieces. That and in modern even four cost cards are starting to get really hard to justify when other decks are doing so much with cheaper plays. I don't think that there's room for any deck to sacrifice early plays to set up a Karn optimally, and the only deck that has strong synergy with the card due to the artifact theme is Affinity, which is mostly using him for the token more than card advantage.
When Jund is getting stifled, mid-range as a whole is in an unfavorable position.

He's going to be a staple in Affinity and it's looking like Eldrazi Tron as well. And it hasn't even been a month since release. I'm sure there will be some more modern decks with Karn in the 75 after people get over the inertia to change in non rotating formats.

In all honesty, I don't think modern is where I'd be parking my money right now, anyway. The problem is that modern isn't where wizards wants to be and as I was suspecting, the prices of modern are not based on player need, but the over abundance of speculators feeling confident in the formats health. When wizards screwed up on masters 25 it wasn't players that were doing a gold rush on cards and spiking prices, it was the confidence of a lack of reprinting by those watching the market that has caused prices to rise. Despite the fact that modern is a popular way to play, I don't think that modern is popular enough to justify the high prices on many of the cards even when the market was in a waning phase over the last few years.
I'm okay in the situation where wizards has printed a card as much as possible and the sheer popularity of a format has forced a card to 80 dollars or something. I'm not okay with the situation that a booster box MSRP and a lower pull rate are the primary culprit for a price point on a card. Modern is heavily the latter and has been this way for a while now. On top of which, players are now warming to Arena and it's only a matter of time for MTGO to finally have it's well deserved coup de grâce.
That being said, Wizards isn't going to abandon historic cards, just that the format these will get used in will be different from modern. Also, this isn't a "death of modern" forewarning as much as it's not the big deal it once was back in the days of 2013. Plus I like taking pot shots at speculators who do stupid things like buying out huge amounts of 4th edition and ice age cards. I don't think they realize how much 4th ed and beyond got opened, because my early days of magic crack a pack box is loaded with 4th edition and I don't even want to get started on Ice Age, Mirage, Tempest, Urza's Saga, and beyond.

The pro tour/shortly after will decide the meta. Then prices will stop fluctuating.
Then hopefully the price of Karn, Scion of Urza can go down a bit...OR it could go up, which is pretty scary. I'm more upset with myself that I didn't speculate on History of Benalia (the one card from Dominaria that I wanted to spec on) at $11 each preorder. I would have definitely bought at least 12 of them if it had started at $8, but $11 felt like it didn't give me much squeeze room. I think it's sitting at over $20 now.
I feel that. I procrastinated buying up Teferi's at $12 for preorder and ended up having to buy or trade for them @ $35. This whole set is wild.

He deserves the price at the moment thanks to all the decks running him. On the other hand, I think his price is also being pushed by the supply issues with the set.

i think mox amber being pricey was just inevitable regardless of its level of play just because its a mox. once its relegated to EDH almost exclusively it will probably drop over time.

It's the Mox Opal effect. Mox Opal was $18 when in Standard. I don't remember it seeing much play, if any. I bought them during that time and literally never used the card until I played a bit of Modern Lantern. Now, the card is nearly $100. Not to mention, people that own them are not dumping them any time soon. They'd rather keep them for whatever they're doing or for potential in the future.

Funny, I do remember buying a playset of mox opal for about 20 dollars each years ago at a local store here. That purchase was kept secret from everyone, espescially from my parents, because they'd think I'm crazy for buying four pieces cardboard for 80$. Only told them about it when I was reselling the opals for 60 each each, and the opals were indeed resold. :3

An excellent point. I think many are holding thinking it may take the same trajectory as Mox Opal. It won't but I do think it will rise from its level now when something comes along in the future. I'm keeping a close eye and if prices dip to 10 bucks a copy I'm going to pick up a playset or two.

Mox Opal was one of the key cards in Tempered Steel as well as Kuldotha Rebirth. Tempered Steel being a T1 deck (as much as anything could be alongside Caw Blade), and Kuldotha being fast. It saw a lot of play.
I want both a Karn and a Mox for my EDH deck, alongside a couple more Karns for Affinity or whatever else I throw them in. I'm not willing to pay the current price though. I still expect both to drop significantly in the next few months. Kinda wish I bought Karn at $30 though just to play it a bit sooner.
Maybe it's actually part of wotc plan for Karn's price to go as high as possible. Then reprint him somewhere.. that product where he got reprinted will sell fast like tasty hotcakes. --- just kidding ok.

I remember those super fast Kuldotha rebirth decks. They're spicy.
About Karn.. I also failed to get a copy or two, because thought his 30$ price is too high. Now, he's twice that and still climbing.
And if Alpha Investment's Rudy is right, the plan for WOTC is to release additional print runs slowly despite the overwhelming demand. I can't see any reason for that besides maintaining singles prices...damn.
My stance on pricing has always been such: I will not spend more than $30 on a card. That simple. Beyond that and I just cannot justify the purchase even when I have the funds for it. That limits me in modern, and I realize that. Standard, however, as the "entry" to constructed play just creates this vicious loop of buying $40-60 cards, then rotation hits, except most of those cards aren't good enough to see play beyond standard, so you either sell a month before rotation and not play to rebound somewhat, or just let them sit in a folder. Karn is the exception, not the rule.
Makes sense to me to keep the singles high until you can release a bulk product like challenger decks to cash in on it really well. I still don’t think Karn will stay this high though.
With no new Master's sets on the horizon (currently) do we think WOTC is planning something that will reprint some of the cards that have really crept up lately? Things like Opal, Karn (og), and Noble Hierarch desperately need reprints sooner than later. I'm building into GW valuetown and just can't justify dropping $90 on a manadork, even the best one ever printed.
I remember when it was close to $30 and I almost bought a play set...yikes.
I do too. Already had one and bought 3 more for a full playset at the time. Good on me.

Honestly, I feel lucky I bought karn back at the cusp of April when the cards were spoiled early. At the time it seemed like the most obvious thing to do since it was card advantage that could literally slot into any deck and it can work as a finisher in an artifact heavy build. Fast forward to now and he's basically everywhere in standard. Him and Goblin Chainwhirler are probably the two hottest cards in the set at the moment.
On the other hand, edh players are getting a break since Muldrotha, the gravetide appears to finally be hitting the point where the supply is out stretching the demand.
In any case, I think Karn is the card that will drop the most once Kaladesh rotates unless they infuse another heavy artifact set into the format with the summer core set or the fall set. He's the replacement for Gideon AoZ that the vehicles deck was waiting for. As for Teferi, I think he's going to keep a reasonable price tag and will be a player going forward for the next year and a half until he rotates. He's just too good not to play him and even in modern, he's probably one of the few 5 mana walkers to really have the strength to be relevant.
