So I have my foil modern deck but now I need 3 foil damping shere’s. I’ve never been a foil guy so what can I reasonably expect to get them at after release? I see they’re about $40 now and that seems insane to me but maybe I’m just wrong.
Fetches Are next to spike, speculators are buying back into modern since themed sets are the future. Fetches are going to be targeted next
The good news is that historically when fetches are high, shocks are low, and when shocks are high fetches are low... so shocklands may come down a bit if fetches go up.
You can throw that paradigm out the window. Without a dedicated Modern reprint set both will continue to climb. These are the staples of Modern, everyone needs them and they have been out of print for a while now. The only chance we see Shocks go down is if Ravnica 3 is announced and people speculate they will come back in that set.

I can say that is very true about the shocklands right now. Also rising up like the fetches. About a month or two ago, I got 3 Stomping Ground for about 12 each. Now they're at 20 or close to 20 at online stores.
That and when wizards is reprinting the land cycles they mostly have standard in mind, so it's not like they will just reprint a shockland or fetchland due to it needing a reprint. They also like to print original cycles that emulate an older cycle, such as the Shadow lands, which were basically worse versions of the check lands.
The one advantage shock lands have over others is that because the land cycle is such a strong component of Ravnica's identity, the chance of Wizards of the Coast printing some other rare land cycle in the set is fairly low. I do think that if there is going to be some big Vorthos Bolas war on Ravnica WoTC will dedicate two sets to it as well.

A week ago, there was exactly 1 play set on Ebay for $60 shipped, or $15 each. I considered buying it, but didn't really want to go through buying and then selling. I know that ship has passed, but I would wait for it to hopefully go to Foil Field of Ruins prices. It's certainly not guaranteed though, just like anything else in Magic.
Also, it looks like there's a buyout on Fecundity. I'm not sure where the Goblins Storm deck was listed, but it seems like someone is capitalizing on that. I even had a store reneg on a sale that they did to me for that card. Still got 4 coming from another store, but that sucks.

I don't think Feduncity will hold a strong price point for long. It's one of those cards that is easily reprinted in a commander product or some supplementary item down the road and unless someone is playing the goblin storm deck there are better ways to net cards.

I think shocks are very overvalued right now. Shocklands are currently weaker in Modern than they've ever been. The numbers players are running is at an all time low.

Blood Moon and fastlands. Decks that kill you in the first 3 turns play fastlands with no downside and decks playing Blood Moon are playing basics. That's not to say the fetch/shock manabase is bad, it's just that the best decks in the format are either killing you quick enough to not need them or have totally unfair manabases otherwise (like Humans or Affinity).

When Humans, Hollow One, Tron and Affinity are at the top of the meta, the share of shocks is naturally going to be down. Everything is cyclical, there will be an uptick eventually. Shocklands have no place to go but up without a reprint. And even with the downswing in play, prices currently are not reflecting that, just the opposite.

Hollow One is also the deck that drove Blackleave Cliffs through the roof.
I still don’t get why Gemstone Mine is hanging low and unused in this meta. The aforementioned ‘Decks that kill you in the first three turns’ should always be running these. Their only drawback only matters in games that run past turn 3, and even then they’re usually good for longer than that (if you draw any other land, you can save your Mine for T2 and have it live used every turn til t4).

Bloodbraid Elf's release made Blackcleave Cliffs more expensive as everyone rushed out to play Jund. It's the same reason Bob double in price. Hollow One probably did help with Cliffs going up, but you can see that after Feb 12 they both blew up.
By the way, anyone looking at Dominaria singles at the moment to brew decks around and thinking of buying: Don't.
I've already heard the stories from the various LGS on how well the pre-release has went and the prices are insane right now on this set even on pre-order. There's going to be a huge resupply of boxes hitting after this first wave and then prices on the singles market is going to just get crushed in the next month.
Holy smokes Karn is 40 dollars...

And despite the influx coming in, I think he's only going up from there for a bit. Hard to keep the cost down on a thing that will see Modern and Legacy play (limited though it may be). Hopefully after a while the Chandra effect will kick in.
History of Benalia is also 'lol' worthy right now, but not $40 lol worthy.
I think you are looking at the pre-release version. Regular version is going for 15 dollars. I actually think the card has legs in a couple of builds both modern and standard, but it's not worth the 15. This is probably the first time since maybe gatecrash where the prices on just about everything is probably going to drop.

Probably referring to how Chandra/Torch went from ~$40 in Kaladesh prerelease weekend to ~$20 about a month after release. Its prerelease hype didn't hold through actual release. It didn't rise up again til Amonkhet and Ramunap Ruins and Hazoret gave it a dominant home.
The price drop of Chandra in late 2016 around its prerelease (the $40 in late September 2016 to $20 in early November 2016)... wasn't affected by the Challenger-deck reprint that was announced in February 2018.
That's what's being talked about here. Whether there will be a major difference in the value of Karn between prerelease and a monthish later, like there was for Chandra. What happened 16 months after that isn't at issue.
Oh, I misread with regards to prerelease. However, the same holds true for just about every "chase mythic" that lives on unproven hype for the first few weeks and then drops off considerably. The only way it's going to hold such a price is if it becomes a namesake staple card in one or more top decks. Otherwise, it'll drop, just like almost every other overcosted prerelease mythic in every set.

Exactly. And even if something does get picked up and played across multiple formats, it'd still be difficult for any standard card in rotation to maintain that price point. Gideon, Ally of Zendikar makes for a good comparison. Came from a hyped set, pre-ordered for $40+, saw play across Standard/Modern/Legacy/EDH, but it still never came back within $10 of the pre-order price following the two weeks post-release.
I don't doubt that it could make an impact; I just doubt that it can sustain a $40 price tag when people are buying Dominaria boxes like they're going out of style. BFZ had that same hype, which is what made me think back to the Gideon parallel.
Although it's still worrying.. if no fetch is reprinted for a long time. The khans fetches might eventually catch up to the zen fetches in price.
