As the title suggest I wanted to discuss what is your take on passing bombs. Today I was drafting U/W control (M19), so my cards were pretty much all U/W, and last pack I opened a vivian. Now I know that she is a huge bomb in draft but I didn't needed it in my pool and there were some decent U/W cards but forgot which card I took, so I ended up passing it to a guy who was playing U/G and end up winning the tourney.. Now i feel like I should have taken her even tho I didn't need her but maybe someone more experienced may provide some insights.
A really strong off-color bomb should only be passed, if there is also a strong in-color card to pick instead. Most people will probably take the bomb anyway simply for value. Some will try to get the better deck and overall do better in the event and get more prizes. I once passed a Garruk third pack while taking a Serra Angel for my deck. I simply couldn't afford triple green and thought that the Angel would make my deck and thus my chances of winning games better. And I like to think that it did. The guy I passed the planeswalker to couldn't believe it.
I think you did the right thing. The problem with hate drafting is that you may not even play against that person and even if you do they may not draw that card. So you are giving up a card that could improve 100% of your games for a card that might make a difference in, at most, 1/3 of your games. Pretty much the only time I will take a card that I have no chance of playing is if I think absolutely none of the cards in the pack will make my deck, or if I am money drafting.
Even though it might not seem like that, I think you did the right choice.
I mean, I'll take an off-color rare if I need it somewhere else (like for an EDH deck) AND there's nothing much for me in the pack, but in general I prioritize good cards for my limited deck, because that's the way you win drafts. I don't even counterdraft, as I find it a loss of a pick.
edit: btw, I got a friend whose strategy in draft is just rare-picking, without even worrying about fixing. Yeah, his record isn't exactly stellar.
