Hey everybody. I know how much everyone loves simulators around here, and I was going to try my hand at making one because I love limited!
I'd really like to make one that implements the print runs that you see in real packs, mostly because it keeps the distribution of colors more even and it's slightly more like the real thing to practice with.To do this I need help! I need your help! A quick list of the cards in a pack, in order, as soon as you crack it is just what I need.
What would even be easier would be if after you cracked a pack, you slid the cards vertically, so all names were readable and you snapped a quick picture with your phone's camera. This literally takes only seconds and would be INCREDIBLY helpful to me. Remember I need legible names, original orientation, and to know if there is a foil
The prerelease is the best time for this, obviously taking pictures of packs at the start of a draft is a bit unseemly, but sealed is a different matter altogether! Six packs ready for recording at your leisure, it's a data bonanza! Just send the pics/lists either by private message to me (Esc7) OR to this handy email address I set up for it: " AVR.Pack.Data (at) gmail.com "
If I can get about 50 sealed pools I'd most certainly be able to figure out all the common print runs. Of course I will share and credit all the data I get back and all the derived data on this forum. Let me know if you think this is a good idea or you'll help contributing! I know I'm good for at least 2 sealed pools this weekend, and any more my friends will let me photograph. Even if you don't, I wish you fun and luck this weekend!
Just sent through two packs of data. It's not much but I hope it helps
EDIT: If I end up buying a booster box, would you like all the data from that?
Thank you! Every little bit helps and OH HELL YES to the booster box.
Thanks to everyone who snapped pics during the prerelease and of their prize packs. I'm going to compile the data and post it this week before the release. If you're someone who buys a box at the release of each set, recording the cards and their orderings would be MASSIVE.
P.S. got 11 packs from my prerelease and two awesome EDH generals! Hope you all got good cards!

How to read the uncommons:
Each uncommon is followed by one of two others. In the above, if the linked card is the first card, the two cards that come after it are after the second ->. The two cards before the first -> are for ease in using the data.
If you are passed a pack with two uncommons, find the lines where those two cards are linked. The missing uncommon is one of the eight other cards in those two lines. Not the most useful of information, but better than nothing.
Each pack has two cards from either A or B, and one from the other.
Sorry Medusas, I'll send all the data to you, looks like you got WAY more done than I do
no need to apologize...
I helped the store open a case. That's a lot of data. But somehow, not enough. Too many packs with 1 card from B, and the few times I get 4, it's at the same place. argh
This is very interesting, but I don't quite get how use this info to figure out what the packs look like?
Would someone care to explain the algorithm?
Thanks!
Commons are printed on 2 121 card sheets. These two sheets are both cut in "half" to make 2 66-card "runs" and 2-55 card "runs".
one of the sheets has cards printed on it twice, the other has cards printed on it thrice. There is also one card that is on both sheets once.
Uncommons are printed on 1 121 card sheet, with two runs of 66 and 55 cards.
So, when assembling booster packs, the machines take some cards from the 66-card printed twice run (A), then some cards from the 66-card printed thrice run (B), then some cards from one of the two 55-card runs (C1 or C2). Then uncommons, rare, token, land and foil.
The order of the cards from each run is almost always the same (mistakes can happen), so we can reconstruct what the entire runs look like if we get three cards in a row from a run. This happens in most packs for A, C1 and C2, but only rarely for B. So a lot a packs need to be opened and analyzed to get enough data. For the uncommons, perfect info is impossible, since you only get one or two cards from each run.
Why would anyone bother? One, it lets people like Esc make software that uses real world packs instead of random cards. This better replicates the situations you might find yourself in.
Another use is for drafting. It's hard to do and takes some memorization skills, but if you can reconstruct the print run in a pack just passed to you, you can figure out with some certainty what your neighbor is in.
I know it won't be anytime soon, but I can draft-cap MTGO runs in another couple weeks when it comes out on MTGO. I imagine you'll have all the data by then though.

L5R or MTG, if it's got Samurai, Knights or Soldiers, it's all good as far as I'm concerned.

probably not, without people helping. The only packs I'll see by then will be draft packs, and I can't take notes/remember the runs from those.
It's what I had to do for Innistrad and Dark Ascension. btw, why were some of the DA packs shuffled and some not in the draft caps? I'm curious.
Is it known what the probabilities are for the various possible number of cards per run? For example, is there 50% chance of 3 A cards and 50% chance of 4 A cards, or something else?

unfortunately not at this time. It's something I've thought about, but it would add a significant amount of time to determine. I usually don't have it because I use other people's cards to find this stuff out, and I don't want to tie it up for any longer than necessary. (it took 8 hours to go through the 6 cases last week)
edit: it might be possible to determine mathematically, since we know that each card needs to be the same rarity (scroll of Griselbrand excluded)
Hey everybody, sorry for being AWOL, work has been a beast lately. Medusas has the lion's share of the data right now and is working on figuring out the last track (and maybe as much as you can know about the uncommons!) Why? Because she's awesome and the best at it.
If you are still cracking packs and snapping pics keep sending them to AVR.Pack.Data@gmail.com More data never hurts.
All of you have been rock solid in helping and makes me think we can solve every set to come if we keep organized enough.
I don't have photos of the sequences since I did this a few weeks ago and, until now, had abandoned the project. So you'll have to either trust the data or verify it over time. But I believe it to be correct.
I have some data for the uncommons as well, so I'll take a look at those lists when I have a chance.

btw, if you missed it, I added in the ISD and DA stuff in the other thread a little while ago. super late, but if you still want it, it's there now.
Thanks man, you're awesome (and probably better at this than me) I look forward to working it out with you!
