I would like to hear some opinions on how good Kraken Hatchling really is in limited.
I like it a lot. It's reminder text could actually say "This one mana drop will prevent anywhere in the region of 2 - 10 damage." Is the time this little guy buys you really worth having a creature that would in most instances never actually do any damage or is that to much of a con.
I like him too, but with the caveat that I don't like being in Blue.
You never have to pick them high, though, because Blue has to be very open to be worth playing. (And in fact a Hatchling at pick one in any pack will often table if you yourself are in Blue.)

Hatchlings are often 13/14th picks if blue is open. So don't be afraid that someone will grab it before you. Although, it as very good blocker. I love it when they drop their Lacerator, and then I drop my Hatchling.
If you are in Blue this guy is a gem you rarely need to wory about getting late. Blue arguably the most shallow in the aggro department and you will most likely be a slower control or aggro/control deck. One drops that trump your opponent's aggro one drop will save a lot of damage. The problem is it isn't a great topdeck. Even if you get it midgame, though, it should be enough to at least catch up in a race or pull ahead.

Excited for M13 Limited? What do you think the format will look like? Head over to the limited forum and let us know what you think.
Hatchling is a great hoser to all the aggro running around. I drafted WU Allies last night at FNM with 3 of them main boarded so I could set up both Allies and hopefully get Luminarch Ascension online. Of course, the one game where I actually dropped turn 2 Ascension complete with 2 Hatchling my opponent dropped Hexmage! Then ramped into Rampaging Baloths
The fact that hatchling doesn't have defender gives it the ability to attack with adventuring gear and explorer's scope, which are some of my favorite plays

Agreed, and I love the fact that it is so undervalued. It always makes me happy to take a 13th pick playable.
Thanks for contributing. NOT!!! --Borat
Anyway, i find him to be a good card when i draft blue, which is a fair amount. He's a lot better when it's not U/R or U/W, because then you want welkin terns and umara raptors.
He's good as long as you play other cheap, quasi-defensive dudes.

Well, you always want Welkin Terns and Umara Raptors, as they are the top picks in blue. Kraken Hatchlings would work well in pretty much any deck with ample evasion, or any slow deck which needed to improve its defense.
I'd actually say it's pretty good. I've lost more games to blue than any other color in Zendikar limited so far. That little hatchling is quite annoying and really makes it hard to race blue's flying arsenal with most ground assaults. Of course, it doesn't hurt that the strongest drafters at my shop like being in blue.

Well, maybe that's why they're the strongest drafters. But seriously, blue is becoming more and more of a threat in Zen limited. I'd say the color with the worst options is probably Green at this stage.
if you draft mono U or UW its good...at least it has been for me.
nice blocker against all those who draft vamps and goblins...
bastards :-P
Well I assume they're not actually drafting tribal. It just so happens that some/most of they're creatures will be that type because the card choices are limited. (Hence the term limited [I think, purely speculating here]).
I'm about to play a mono blue deck in an 8-4 final. It's catching on.
EDIT: I just got so rolled. Hatchling, Tern, Raptor, Tern, Tern, Bounce, Cancel, Roil Elemental. Jeez. We split and played for points so its all good anyway
I like how not a single person here is really talking about the card.
I like kraken hatchling a lot. That and stonework puma have allowed me to play control against all the nissa's chosen, survivalists, lacerators, goblins...
The secret nuts is actually kraken hatchling in allies. It's not a deck you can force, but when you find yourself doing UG allies or something, grab some hatchlings.

I'll be sad if people don't start calling The Chain Veil "Fleetwood Mac."
My experience is mixed. My plan in blue (usually WU or GU) is usually block with hatchlings early while building up fliers.
Sometimes he'll nullify a lacerator or geopede, but other times you're down a card when your opponent plays giant scorpion or marauder or adventuring gear. He's an essential card for blue in some matchups and you almost NEED 2+ of them against faster decks, but I usually don't play more than 1 main.

In those colors, what are you really going to use to stop a geared up geopede anyway? Welkin Tern? Umara Raptor? Windrider Eel can't block worth anything.
When you're in blue, you're investing in evasion, playing a slow deck in a fast format with no way to block. Sometimes you just need a 0/4 to hold off the beats. Even if your opponent does have a 5/5, if you block it once, you've prevented five and allowed your fliers one more turn to get in.
I like the hatchling because I want some turns to set up my kicked into the roils, and it's nice to be able to hardcast whiplash trap when your opponent is using some landfall/equipment aggro strategy. Terns and blue spells just don't get you there on their own.
Even if kraken hatchling just read "prevent 6 damage," against red, that double healing salve can count for a lot.

Kraken Hatchling will either chump a lot of fast damage early game or eat a Burst Lightning or Disfigure, two things I'm very fond of. Again, people tend to like it a lot because it tables and its a cards that is very playable and very likely to be seen at least once per draft as the best card in the pack. I tend to gravitate towards it when I play U but not W, since UW tends to be very aggressive in the sky but it's got its place in that deck also.
As a sort of tangent, I like 4 toughness butts in Zendy limited a lot in general, which also has me value Makindi Shieldmate and Joraga Bard (but not as much) as decent cards also, since they are great blockers that enable Umara Raptors and other blowout allies. Having triple Makinda Shieldmate and triple Umara Raptor is a great thing to have in draft.
It just comes down far too late. Half that damage that the Hatchling blocks (not chump blocks, because it seldom dies) has hit your face by the time Bard is in play.

I like big butts and I can not lie
You other brothers can't deny
That when a girl walks in with an itty bitty waist
And a round thing in your face
You get sprung, wanna pull out your tough
'Cause you notice that butt was stuffed
Deep in the jeans she's wearing
I'm hooked and I can't stop staring
Oh baby, I wanna get with you
And take your picture
My homeboys tried to warn me
But that butt you got makes me so horny
Ooh, Rump-o'-smooth-skin
You say you wanna get in my Benz?
Well, use me, use me
'Cause you ain't that average groupie
I've seen them dancin'
To hell with romancin'
She's sweat, wet,
Got it goin' like a turbo 'Vette
I'm tired of magazines
Sayin' flat butts are the thing
Take the average black man and ask him that
She gotta pack much back
So, fellas! (Yeah!) Fellas! (Yeah!)
Has your girlfriend got the butt? (Hell yeah!)
Tell 'em to shake it! (Shake it!) Shake it! (Shake it!)
Shake that healthy butt!
Baby got back!
I can't decide if that last post deserves an infraction, or a nomination for Post of the Year.
Why can't it be both?
Nah, there is nothing infractable here. Kraken hatchling is cool, he has a big butt, and he apparently turns Domogrue on.
