This is an interesting pick and a turning point for our deck. There's some very good Sultai and Temur options here. We could play it safe and pick something like Singing Bell Strike here to stay more open, but I think we give up way too much power in doing so. As I said before, I think our cards so far are slightly favoring Temur, and I think Avalanche Tusker is the best card, but it's not hugely ahead of Sultai Soothsayer, Debilitating Injury, and Abomination.
I think, we established through the first pack, that black is not our color, and that pretty much settles us into Temur. So we can take the heavy Temur cards now. The deck so far doesn't have a lot of threats, so I'm happy with taking the potential nom-nom machine, Avalanche Tusker.
Well, I guess I'm getting outvoted. Avalanche Tusker isn't even the best temur card in the pack (that would be bear's companion), but here we are.
The only thing I know is that we are blue. Our cruise and flock and flock package is in no matter what. Fortunately, we don't have to be very blue to play those cards. So any wedge touching blue is possible. Unfortunately, the best blue card is crippling chill, which I'm not willing to take this early.
The sultai and temur package look better than the jeskai package, which is just the temur package minus green plus the weaponmaster. We're going to be low on playables, so two okay creatures plus a trick outweighs the one morph (even if the morph is better than any one of those three cards).
Between the temur and sultai packages, it's close. Arrow storm headlines red, but the yeti and canyon lurker are meh. Meanwhile, death frenzy and the warrior are also just so-so, but they fit really well into the green and blue cards we've already got. Flock + ancestor + death frenzy is a plan. Flock and yeti, not so much.
TL;DR, I'm taking the best sultai card in the pack, debilitating injury, and crossing my fingers. There are many other good Sultai cards in the pack, so we'll probably wheel one. And, although we'll be a little low on playables, sultai seems the best bet for bringing together a cohesive deck.
The guts tell me to go Sultai and pick either the injury or the abomination (Which flies and offers some antiflood-tech), but it doesn't look like it is going to happen. To be honest, I would rather pick the Bear's Companion over the Tusker.
Not much here for a Temur deck. The Heart-Piercer seems even less useful here than for the previous player considering the lack of attackers. The card with the most impact for this deck, in my opinion, is Dragonscale Boon. Too costly for my tastes, but it is a neat combat trick. And if we get some more Abzan lords, it will become better.
Edit:
On the topic of Rakshasa Deathdealer, the black ship has sailed a long time ago. As good as this card is in a black deck, we won't get a black deck except for maybe a splash or two. And as a splash, this card does not live up to the hype. The only useful black we are going to see is in the first half of this pack. Don't expect good black to come around in round 3, because round 1 has shown already, that black is being cut off. You want to go full black with but a handful of cards, but that will backfire. Accept that this is not the deck to go Deathdealer. Instead work with what we have already to build something workable. Taking Deathdealer will just end up being a hate pick, and we can't afford that right now.
Rakshasa is an absolute bomb if you're solidly BG. And all our blue cards are splashable. We're only giving up the arrow storm and tusker.
And frankly, we should be taking anything as powerful as that that doesn't mean giving up on most of our picks. We don't have much else going for us. There's literally nothing in our pool better than this card, and I'm ready to jump in feet first.
I agree. There's nothing really worth taking for temur here. I think we lost some truly solid picks by insisting on Temur, and althought it might be late, I think this pack doesn't offer much else.
Grim Haruspex. I won't lie, the last two picks were tough to watch. I don't even consider the tusker to be particularly good. But here we are, and the black morph is definitely the pick. Let's see if we can leverage it with our death frenzy to steal some games.
