One question I have for you guys: what do you think of the mana base? It was pretty consistent for me, but I wonder if Unknown Shores would've been better than the third Holdout Settlement, just to give me more options for smoothing out my colors. thoughts?
I think I would have done what you did; I'd rather have the ramp, frankly, with such a nasty top end. The only card you need CC for is Grasp, and that's good late, too.

Sorry, I was using sloppy language. Using Unknown Shores for colored mana requires an extra mana; not ramp at all, but a little less mana intensive. Really not much of a point to make.. the lands are pretty similar in your deck.

Hm, it seems like there's some sort of consensus brewing that synergy is overrated and curving out is what you want to be aiming for in OGW. Well, here is another bullet point for that conclusion. I just won a paper 8 man at a fairly competitive mtg store with this deck. I didn't drop a game and I only came close to not crushing my opponent once. I got pretty lucky a few times but the deck was ultra consistent. Loved it!
MVPs: Loam Larva did extra work grabbing the color I was missing and ensuring another landfall trigger the next turn. Vines of the Recluse was always awesome too. It just let me alpha strike every turn. I ended up cutting the second netcaster spider for the second vines of the recluse the second two matches I played.
Underperformers: I could be convinced Joraga Auxiliary didn't need splashing. But really, the only reason I never activated it was 1, I only played 6 games, 2, the games never lasted long enough, 3, it absorbed a good removal spell before I could.
I was horribly lost in the draft I tried going black but that wasn't open, was passed deceiver of form so I started taking the rare colourless lands that I was being passed.. got stalking drones late, seemed green was open but no idea what my other colour was. took isolation zone first next pack. again lots of green but not idea what the second colour was, plus 0 support. Filled all the holes I had in my deck pack 3.
I lived the dream.. deceiver of form in play, I cast ondu rising, lots of scions in play reveal... plated crusher. one shot my opponent. Second match I did similar revealing shadow glider twice in a row when in a board stall.
Match 3 was a nail biter, clobbered by fliers game 1, game 2 was all stalking drone beat down
Game 3 match 3.... opponent amasses 7 power worth of flyers against me game 3.. I basically have to Ondu rising then suicide some bears to stay alive. he hits me again. I am on 8.. I attack in to force a chump block (otherwise I was dead).. we are both on 8.. he swings 7 flyiers I don't block go to 1. He plays a blocker, I have 11 power on board (4/4 land from ondu rising) I am 1 damage short myself, seer's lantern scry land to the bottom.... I slow roll myself... heart of the cards...draw nissa's judgement... bamn kill his blocker and swing for the win.
Eldrazi Displacer is my favorite card in the set. I learned to my dismay that I was not set to record drafts somehow, which is a shame because it was weird. P1P1 Immolating Glare, pack 3 was so bad I first picked a useless Drana (my best pick was literally Dazzling Reflection) and third-picked Plummet.
Hoo, man. This opponent's deck was nasty; 2 Oblivion Strikes, 3 Cultivator Drones, 2 Blinding Drones, multiple 2-4 power fliers, Essence Depleter, Ulamog's Reclaimer, Coastal Discovery... First game I managed to hold on for a while with my various combat tricks, and trading Needle Spires for a Cultivator Drone so he could only activate one of his two Blinding Drones and Essence Depleter, but he drew me out. I sideboarded in aggresively; both Kitesail Scouts, Inspired Charge, my flying tricks and Plummet (out: Birthing Hulk, Lithomancy, Warden) and just ran him over with, in order, Scout, Aeromaut, Lead by Example, Courier Griffin, Plummet. Game three I mad to mull to 4, and drew decently, but I think the game was won to me holding my cards and not walking into a blowout... for example, letting him ping my Kitesail Scout and my Lagac to save my Vines for when it could be a twofer (due to being so behind on cards already.) Sure enough, Containment Membrane into attacks netted me enough advantage. I topdeck a Steppe Glider (turns out Membrane hates vigilance), he throws O Strikes at me like they were on sale, but the topdeck war goes to Boulder Salvo clearing the way for my fliers. I proceed to feel better about this match than I have any other game I've played.
Match 2 RB... enchantments?
Not much to see here. Game 1 my opp mana screwed, game 2 she loaded up a Reckless Cohort with War Paint and Untamed Hunger, but couldn't handle all my precious, precious combat tricks.
Match 3 RG Beats
Game 1: by the time I had a creature (Warden) out, they had a Lifespring Druid and a Pathwarden down... which they followed with Embodiment of Fury, land. I play Eyeless Watcher and combat-trick away the Embodiment, play Needle Spires. Pulse of Murasa gives them back Embodiment and puts them at 26... I'm at 5. Look at this juicy nonsense..What I did:
Searing Light the Scion Summoner, block token and Druid with tokens, block Pathwarden with Warden, Support into Warden and the token that is blocking a token, Focus Warden.
Then came the sweetest two draws of my life; Wall of Resurgence (onto Spires) and Eldrazi Displacer. Opp scoops at 17 life... I guess they didn't have Reality Hemmorhage in their deck.
Game 2 was a battle. Lots of creatures coming down and getting binned, notably a Bane of Bala Ged and Pathwarden, I managed to trade the Bane for a couple combat tricks and stabilize, (Vines of the Recluse, man... good card. Untapping is huge) but with my opponent at 8 and victory assured the next turn, they play Sparkmage's Gambit and seal the deal.
Game 3 I mull to six lands and Displacer, and because I love Displacer with all my heart, keep it. I hold onto Displacer until I can activate him, and keep my opp's biggest threat (which was a Beastmaster, and required some finesse) out of the picture until I can draw my engines.. which in this case was Steppe Glider and Birthing Hulk. Lead by Example gave (via Glider) my Hulk and Seed Guardian flying and vigiliance. GGs all around.

Gut Rating Going into Round 1: 7. Rating going into Round 2: 8.
MVP(s): Devour in Flames/Reckless Bushwhacker
Under-performers: Nothing really comes to mind. Maybe Reckless Cohort, since its only purpose is to get a body down on T2. Even that card did some work, though.
Overall record: 6-0.
1st picks: Devour in Flames, Containment Membrane, Ob Nixilis, Reignited (4.5 tix)
This deck had so much removal that I never felt under pressure in any of the matches. 5 of my 6 matches never went past 10 minutes of the round.
I wish I believed in the heart of the cards enough to first-pick a Crush of Tentacles. I am not a fan and have passed it on multiple occasions for no real loss.
1st Picks:Munda's Vanguard, Isolation Zone, Makindi Patrol. Overall Record: 6-1, but not by very much. Thoughts on Running 4 Expedition Raptor: 5/10, would probably do it again.
3-0, 6-2.
first picks: Endbringer, stonehaven outfitter, retreat to emeria
Best performers: Bonesaw, Aeronaut and skyclimber
Underwhelming: Retreat to emeria
Match 1 vs BR eldrazi was a super close tussle. Game 1 I managed to eek out damage with nirkana assassin supported by a war cleric, to walk past my opponents 2/5s and 0/4s. Game 2 I got four for oned by flaying tendrils still only ended up 1 damage short. game 3.. I climbed into the sky, with perfect sequencing of 2 drops to allow me to just keep hitting.
match 2 vs jeskai trainwreck paired down over in 10 mins
Match 3 vs Grxis Eldrazi Game 1 I was so fast out of the gates going wide and into the air before my opponent could find removal or blockers. Game 2.. I kept 1 land on 6 cards.. opponent played ruins of oran reef into the 1/4 guy from BFZ.. into Kozilek's hearld.. into I scoop. Game 3 stonehaven outfitter + bonesaw + 2X makindi areonaut and a Kor castigator = dead opponent. he was forced to devour in flames the castigator and stall his board development then the outfitter came out.
It was a 10 man pod and a lot of people ended up multicolout while I swept up the white commons, 3 isolation zone?.. a few of them late is werid.
1st Picks: Wasteland (over Mina and Denn), Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet, Akoum Firebird. Did I Get to Wasteland Anybody?: ...no. (But I did get to Pulse back a Blighted Gorge... okay, yeah, no.) Overall Record: 6-0
This was my deck at FNM last night. I went 4-0 in a ten man pod. I won all four rounds 2-0.
It felt good.
I went 3-0-1 at FNM a couple of weeks ago with GW Support which I tend to think is the best archetype but this deck synergised so consistently that it really didn't matter what my opponents were doing. Having two copies of both Vampire Envoy and Cliffhaven Vampire was really important. Knowing that the combo isn't broken if one piece gets removed is big.
A couple of cards I think people (certainly in my local meta) undervalue in this format are Makindi Patrol and Tar Snare . When the board stalls out as often as it does in OG***WBFZ, giving your guys vigilance so that you don't have to worry about not having blockers next turn is huge. Tar Snare was big in a couple of the games I played, it can function as a combat trick to remove a bigger threat or just straight up remove a smaller threat. There are a lot of 1-2 toughness creatures around.
The Hero and the Vanguard didn't do a lot of work, they acted more as insurance to keep the important pieces on the board.
I can't recall the details of all the matches, I tend to forget my wins because there is less to analyse.
It went something like this
Round 1 vs GW Support
Round 2 vs 4 Colour Good Stuff (actually a really cool deck that took me almost to time)
Round 3 vs UC Control (A slower deck that couldn't really keep up)
Round 4 GW Support
I really didn't feel very good about this deck going in to round one. It seemed like a pile. I felt pretty bad about running both Kazuul's Toll Collector and Unnatural Aggression, but I needed both the removal and the 3-drops.
The deck was clearly meant to be an aggro deck, but I only actually managed to push through for an aggro win before my opponent stabilized in a couple of games. In the rest of the games, it was almost always building up a strong early advantage and then slowly burning my way to victory with Zada's Commando and Valakut Invoker.
In one long drawn-out game against a UW control deck, I didn't get in for a single attack. Instead, I pinged them down to 9 with Commandos over the course of about a dozen turns until I could get to 8-mana for the invoker and finish the job.
Unnatural Aggression did it's job adequately, though I did suffer the blowout of having my creature bounced in response once. Visions of Brutality, on the other hand, surprised me with how good it was. As long as you're ahead on life (which an aggro deck should be), it's basically Pacifism.
Zada's Commando was definitely the MVP. If you can draft 3+ of them, you already have a decent start on a strong deck. They just do everything. Solid attackers early, imposing defense in the midgame (especially if you have more than one on the field and ESPECIALLY if they've been supported), and inevitability through their ping ability.
Match-ups: Round One was against a new player with a UWb deck that was low on synergy. He did manage to win one game against me with some early fliers though. I sideboarded in Giant Mantis but never drew it. It didn't matter.
Round Two was against a GW allies deck where I again went 2-1.
Round Three was against UW devoid aggro. I won the first game in a drawn out ping-fest as described and then drew a solid Commando-Commando-Lagac-Smasher curve in game two to seal the deal.
First Picks: Steppe Glider, Ondu War Cleric, Encircling Fissure
MVPs: Tajuru Pathwarden, Encircling Fissure. Fissure was amazing all evening long. Normally cast it when attacking, lead to several blowouts.
Underperformers: I never even drew the Glider. Also, being on the aggressive side, I sometimes had problems finding targets for Sheer Drop. Spawnbinder helped out once, though.
Matchups:
- RWb Allies (2-0). First game, I draw a bunch of two-drops, followed by each and every support spell in the deck and run my opponent over with huge Allies. Second game, we get into a stalemate. Eventually, I swing out. He tries to trade boards, only to be foiled by my Encircling Fissure.
- UR Surge (2-0). I curve out in both games, while opponent is struck with mana flood.
- UB Devoid (2-0). I deploy a bunch of low drops, then hold up a hand of combat tricks. Opponent attempts to kill my unblocked War Cleric with Spatial Contortion, but I have a Mighty Leap ready. Here, take 7! Second game, he doesn't find a <> source and gets beaten by a bunch of allies with +1/+1 counters spread all over the place.

Do you value Hissing Quagmire highly or was the pack just incredibly weak?
Do you value Hissing Quagmire highly or was the pack just incredibly weak?
The pack was pretty weak. No premium removal. IIRC it was between Quagmire and Relief Captain. Mostly though, I have been interested in trying the BG deck this set and this seemed like a good sign to take a shot at it. It didn't work out that way, of course.
Finally got a 3-0 draft to share. Took me a while. I kept drafting decks that seemed like good WB decks but that just could not seem to consistently stabilize, or WG decks that always drew their cards in the wrong order. But I opened a Deepfathom Skulker P1p1, and P1p2 and p3 Blinding Drones and decided to see where it went.
The deck has a really nice curve and stabilizes very well, and draws an absolute ton of cards once it gets there. I didn't love the bad amount of hard removal and the lack of quality on the bottom end of the deck, and I had a lot of really iffy games where people were curving out with stuff I just couldn't block, and I was going down to like 6 life, but the deck had the tools to draw out of it and pull it around every time. I was kinda surprised at how effective it was. The Corpse Churn particularly was a surprisingly effective card - it was effectively a fourth Blinding Drone, since that was what I got back every time I cast it.

I have always been curious about Gift of Tusks...it always goes around the 12th pick mark and I have never used it or had it used against me. What was your opinion of the card in actual play? It doesn't seem bad at all from my perspective...though it's probably better in a deck with R/G/B colors where there are more 3/X creatures to take advantage of the trick.
Gift of Tusks plays kinda like Tar Snare, in that it isn't actually good enough to kill stuff on its own, but nobody plays around it so you have chances to trade it for a card often enough to make it a decent 23rd. I wouldn't call it a playable, except that my draft was overall pretty weak and I needed to fill the slot with something, and it was this or Brilliant Spectrum.

i've won a few games w/ gift of tusks. latest i can remember was using it to clear the way for my flyer as they had one blocker that flew.
it goes both ways though, sometimes it's advantageous to use it on your own creature, sometimes theirs. i like it for it's versatility.

Basic Lands: 5 Forests, 5 Mountains, 1 Swamp, 1 Plains
First Picks: Hissing Quagmire, Seed Guardian, Angelic Captain (Yes, I was passed a Reality Smasher)
Gut Impression Before Round 1: 5/10ish
Overall Record: 6-2

1 Steppe Glider
1 Tajuru Beastmaster
1 Mighty Leap
1 Encircling Fissure
1 Sheer Drop
1 Ondu Rising
1 Seer's Lantern
9 Plains
8 Forest

The pack was pretty weak. No premium removal. IIRC it was between Quagmire and Relief Captain. Mostly though, I have been interested in trying the BG deck this set and this seemed like a good sign to take a shot at it. It didn't work out that way, of course.

It doesn't seem bad at all from my perspective...though it's probably better in a deck with R/G/B colors where there are more 3/X creatures to take advantage of the trick.

i've won a few games w/ gift of tusks. latest i can remember was using it to clear the way for my flyer as they had one blocker that flew.
it goes both ways though, sometimes it's advantageous to use it on your own creature, sometimes theirs. i like it for it's versatility.
