What is the correct amount of equipment in this build? Right now I'm running Jitte, Batterskull, Sword of Light and Shadow and Sword of Fire and Ice. I think Light and Shadow is better than Feast and Famine. The removal right now in green is usually connected to black in the form of Abrupt Decay and Swords to Plowshares and the occasional Path to Exile. Is the reason for Feast and Famine simply to get through Goyf's and his green friends? Here's the list I'm running right now with my testing being against Enchantress and UWR miracles. Critiques welcome.
playing this deck with no basic lands is a bad idea.
the numbers of equipments in this deck is just 2 on my list. Batterskull and jitte. Some people use SOLAS if you want to abuse the yard.

The problem I have with SoLaS is that I was never searching for it. Ever. Even against BW decks I'd still rather have Jitte or Batterskull most of the time.
I'm a former Maverick player, but I was tired of losing to SnT and storm combo (and can't afftord blue staples) so I turned to Junk. After a few months of testing, I realized I really hate playing againse Rest in Peace. Is there any way to not be weak to it? Or should I just hold Aburpt Decay?
Things that hate RiP:
Tarmogoyf, Deathrite Shaman, Lingering Souls, Knight of the Reliquary, Life from the Loam, Scavenging Ooze
On a second note, I've never played against tribal decks or UGx tempo, what are those matchups like? What cards are important main and side, or are they even worth siding for?
What's everyone's favorite dredge for this deck? Grafdigger's Cage, Leyline, Crypt/Spellbomb, or just Surgical/Extirpate?

If your local meta has guys playing RIP (which there are only a few decks really using it), then keeping your 4 Abrupts in for it and siding 2 Krosan's is not a bad idea imo. I mean JUNK is a really threat heavy deck so you shouldn't have to use your decays vs their threats (you have STP for that also). If your on the play and you either have Seize or Hymn you have a good chance at hitting it there also. I think with careful play, you can fight it pretty well: Decay/Grip/Seize and Hymn all can fight it.

my favorite SB against dredge would be extirpate + rachet bomb or Deeds.. you only need to cripple dredge by extirpating their bridges, then taking care of the tokens via bomb or deed, DRS takes care of teh rest.
RIP decks however, is a fair match i believe. that is why some rock decks has qasali pridemage on the board. and also, pernicious deed for 2 takes them out completely.

Is The Rock as strong, overall, as JUND? Is the reason it is not placing as high because people don't like to play it as much as JUND, or maybe it is weaker?

my guess is that people are still hyped with playing JUND.. i'd choose JUNK if the meta is Jund, batterskull beats face together with KOTR and the likes.
the only advantage of JUND as i can see it is because if the color red. they have means to battle U based decks in sideboarding.

I recently shifted my Deadguy Ale list into the realm of The Rock or Junk or Deathrite Ale or whatever. I am planning on taking this list with me to a smallish tournament this weekend. I am looking for advice on my sideboard. The meta is unknown, but I think that tier 1 decks will be around (RUG, BUG, Show & Tell, ANT, and Miracles) and then other fringe decks (Merfolk, U/R Delver, MUD) will be present (I guess it's more known then I thought...)
My general strategy is too crush all fair decks I play G1 and bring in a few items to help (Sorin, E. Plague, and Thrun.) Against combo I am soft G1 though and for G2 and G3 bring in a boat load of hate.
Yes, it's 61 cards. Any suggestions on what to cut? I have been debating on either a Lili or a Souls. Can't make up my mind.
I haven't decided if it's worth it to have the 4th Abrupt Decay vs having a Vindicate or Pulse. I just hate tapping out during my turn compared to instant speed AD.
Liliana does more to grind a game out in your favor vs the fair decks. Keep her. You've got enough dudes to throw a jitte/batterskull on so you could argue for a Lingering Souls cut.

Tidehollow sculler i had to playtest yesterday against Show and tell deck. i went 3Win and 2Loss. fair enough to say, it can beatface once you discard their main combo and CA generator. Sculler has been my best solution since my bad matchups before. and will go with this list on may 5th.

Although he doesn't have the equip package with the Lingering Souls. Spamming souls can win games with sheer number and he does have LotV, which is a decent synergy with Souls. Same with discarding extra land to KotR with LotV. Really I am more surprised by the number of LotV more so. She is just such a strong answer for many situations. 3 is my minimum.
The only reasoning that I can think he has Vindicate vs Abrupt Decay is for late-game answers. For my list I run AD and find it is more than enough. Plus at instant speed it's much easier to disrupt an opponent.
Cool thing about the The Rock deck archetype is with so many different cards available many of the spots are in flux. Removal, discard, creature, and utility packages can shift list to list.
Edit:
Also Cavern of Souls might be used more for mana fixing in addition to forcing creatures through counters.
I was playing the list with modifications on cockatrice last night. I cut 1 souls and 2 vindicate for 3 abrupt decay. It actually ran very smoothly. Cavern is underrated I think. Being able to drop bob turn 2 and knight turn 3 without having to worry about counters was VERY good. "Nice Daze and FoW in hand, I'm going to go ahead and stick an insane draw engine and 6/6 beat stick on the table", enjoy dealing with them.
I felt naked against combo though. Literally helpless.
Yeah, combo can be pretty rough. Upping the amount of discard mainboard can help for G1 (Hymn/Therapy/Duress) or changing the spots around to add Gaddock Teeg. What I do is crank up the combo answers in my sideboard for G2 and G3. Bring in all the hate I can Thalia, Leyline of Sanctity, Gaddock Teeg, Tidehollow Sculler, and Extirpate.
It's a punt G1 and you can always steal one of course, but pre-board it's usually rough. That is unless you tilt more towards combo hate and give up some game against fair decks. I've see lists that have Green Sun Zenith with 1 Gaddock MB and another in the SB to bring in along with Hymns.
Cop out answer of course is meta dependent or how you want to play the deck. It's cliche and overused, but true. For me personally I want to crush fair decks with a couple narrow answer to a couple different fair decks in the board, but otherwise dedicate my sideboard to combating combo.
Hope that helps.

Definitely helps, I'm a RUG player thats looking to switch to a new deck, and I've been playing with the Rock on cockatrice and I've been crushing pretty much every "Fair" deck. I took a decklist online and I modified the main deck, but I will change the SB. Do you run Engineered Plague? I feel like its not necessary with Deed in the SB, but I might be wrong.
As of right now
3 Ethersworn Canonist - general combo, only casting 1 spell per turn really hurts their filtering
2 pernicious deed - merfolk, goblins, misc aggro
3 extirpate - get rid of combo pieces after they are discarded, also good vs dredge (bridge from below, dread return)
3 duress/cabal therapy, hymn? - I want more disruption vs combo and more ways to get things in the GY
4 - ???
considering - Diabolic Edict, O Ring, Leyline of Sanctity, E Plague
I felt naked against combo though. Literally helpless.
I don't play this deck often but I play against it quite a bit, I think the problem is that most lists just pack more of the same in their sideboard, I mean look at all the lists posted on the last couple pages, most are running 8+ removal spells MD, and then feel the need to pack in 3-4 more removal spells, plus random sweepers (or engineered plagues) in the sideboard. It seems redundant and is likely overkill most of the time.
Some number of Ethersworn Cannonists (many lists DO have these) are a good start as a catch-all against most sorts of combo decks; one thing I advocate for decks running DRS is to have some number of Grafdiggers Cages in your sideboard to combat GY-based combo. The reason being is that many GY-based combo decks will bring in Pithing Needle as a sort of catch-all against DRS, Karakas, and presumably Relic of Progenitus/Tormods; Needle is truly amazing most of the time, but when an opponent drops a Grafdiggers and I have 2 Needles in hand (as the combo player) I generally want to scoop on the spot.
Surgical Extraction (or to a lesser extent Extripate) is of course another option, but in my experience playing combo it's much more manageable than an on-board permanent (cage, relic, tormods, karakas, cannonist, etc) other than on Turn 0 - if you expect to face a lot of decks that will attempt to beat you on your Turn 0, Surgical is probably the single best answer, but if you expect to at least get to play one land I would say it's the worst answer.
if you expect to face a lot of decks that will attempt to beat you on your Turn 0, Surgical is probably the single best answer, but if you expect to at least get to play one land I would say it's the worst answer.
This really depends HIGHLY on what specific match ups you're playing against. Sure, against something like traditional reanimator with 3-4 pieces of anit-hate, surgical gets significantly worse as the game goes on, because it's reactive. It can also be much weaker against decks with silence.
But against things like dredge or miracles or PF or decks that rely on lingering souls or really any deck with limited number of win conditions, surgical is still one of the all around best "catch-all" answers; much like oblivion ring, duress and echoing truth are, even if these cards aren't all widely played in this archetype.
Not being reliant on a source, or even any mana for that matter is a HUGE advantage as it doesn't take away from precious early resources to establish your first few turns. Because most GY-hate is only really applicable for the first three or four turns anywho. It's also why Faerie Macabre is one of the strongest anti-GY hate cards - against the right deck.

Looks pretty nasty to me. Leyline of Sanctity would be a great card to consider as well like you mentioned. You would only need 3, but 4 for the time being might not be a bad choice either. Otherwise you could a throw a one of Bojuka Bog or Nantuko Monastery? Perhaps Life from the Loam as a one of?
I would also suggest Tidehollow Sculler as another form of combo hate. People are pretty hot and cold with this card. It has it's moments and has single handily won me a game or two, but it has also back fired when my opponent got the card back... it is an artifact though and another bear.

Hi, Been lurking for a bit and I've seen so many versions of the deck...
Checked the first page too, but I've been wondering what the real core cards of the deck is... There are so many versions over so many years that the deck archetype has been active that I'm really confused.
Stoneblade build still proves to be one of the best IMHO. just because of batterskull, still faster than thragtusk.

Hello and welcome!
I only recently just fell into playing this deck, but I can speak of a few of the core cards.
The Rock to me is a blend of Deadguy Ale and Maverick. That means taking a collection of the best cards between the two and using the most powerful black cards as the backbone for construction.
That comprises of the core of the deck pretty much. Dark Confidant and Knight of the Reliquary is really what makes a deck "The Rock" to me. From here you can customize accordingly by adding in Stoneforge Mystic, Lingering Souls, Green's Sun Zenith, more discard, or more Planeswalkers.

2 Bayou
2 Cavern of Souls
1 Horizon Canopy
3 Marsh Flats
1 Maze of Ith
2 Scrubland
4 Verdant Catacombs
4 Wasteland
1 Karakas
3 Sensei's Divining Top
4 Swords to Plowshares
4 Lingering Souls
4 Thoughtseize
4 Vindicate
3 Ethersworn Canonist
4 Engineered Plague
2 Pernicious Deed
3 Diabolic Edict
3 Extirpate
I watched this player play a feature match against Merfolk with this list at SCG Milwaukee (he somewhat punted the match).
4 Vindicate seems like a lot and 0 Abrupt Decays seems even more surprising
So does 4 Lingering Souls (with no equipment package).
Cavern of Souls seems interesting.
Thoughts?

I felt naked against combo though. Literally helpless.

To be clear, this is my main list
1 Snow-Covered Plains
2 Snow-Covered Swamp
2 Bayou
2 Cavern of Souls
1 Horizon Canopy
3 Marsh Flats
1 Maze of Ith
2 Scrubland
4 Verdant Catacombs
4 Wasteland
1 Karakas
4 Dark Confidant
4 Deathrite Shaman
4 Knight of the Reliquary
4 Tarmogoyf
Planeswalkers (2)
2 Liliana of the Veil
Spells (19)
3 Sensei's Divining Top
4 Swords to Plowshares
3 Abrupt Decay
3 Lingering Souls
4 Thoughtseize
2 Vindicate
Also, I don't know why it wont split into multiple columns for the deck

Because you can't spell slaughter without laughter.

Checked the first page too, but I've been wondering what the real core cards of the deck is... There are so many versions over so many years that the deck archetype has been active that I'm really confused.
Any help would be great...

Hello and welcome!
I only recently just fell into playing this deck, but I can speak of a few of the core cards.
The Rock to me is a blend of Deadguy Ale and Maverick. That means taking a collection of the best cards between the two and using the most powerful black cards as the backbone for construction.
For reference...
Maverick
Deadguy Ale
Recent "Dark Maverick" list that performed well.
Here's a quick run down of the core cards that should be included in a Rock deck though.
Creatures:
x4 Dark Confidant
x2-4 Knight of the Reliquary
x3-4 Deathrite Shaman
x2-4 Tarmogoyf
Spells:
x3-4 Abrupt Decay
x3-4 Swords to Plowshares
x3-6 Discard (Thoughtseize, Inquisition of Kozilek, Duress, Hymn to Tourach)
x2-3 Filter Effects (Sylvan Library, Sensei's Divining Top)
Walkers:
x2-4 Liliana of the Veil
x4 Wasteland
x6 Duals (Bayou, Scrubland, Savannah)
x7-8 Fetches (Verdant Catacombs, Marsh Flats, Windswept Heath)
x1 Karakas
x1-2 Other utility land (Bojuka Bog, Maze of Ith, Kor Haven, Horizon Canopy, Dryad Arbor, Nantuko Monastery)
x2-4 Basic Lands
That comprises of the core of the deck pretty much. Dark Confidant and Knight of the Reliquary is really what makes a deck "The Rock" to me. From here you can customize accordingly by adding in Stoneforge Mystic, Lingering Souls, Green's Sun Zenith, more discard, or more Planeswalkers.

I've been to both these forums before and I've tried to study them before I got the urge to ask, but your list gives me a pretty straightforward and easy idea on what to do.
Thanks!
