As my local meta seems to have accepted stone blade nation like a plague, my list is almost the exact same as ridibundus.
Only changes are +1 vortex main as a 61st, and minus 2 pillar, 1 smash, 1 fallout for 2 harsh mentor and 2 monastery swiftspear.
My theory on boarding swiftspear is she could actually be our combo hate. She helped out the idea of a t3 goldfish kill which doesn't help vs back and forth decks like stone blade and grixis, however vs combo we don't have the same holdups.
I may also look into including a firecraft or two as an end the game button for grixis and the like. I've gotten a bit rusty since having a child and the games were easy until it came time to resolve the last spell. Some days you just feel like Indiana Jones "I don't have time for this"
Honestly ever since the Top banning and my moving blazes back into the main, I've had a major lack of cards that felt worthwhile to sideboard. The only ones I know I want for sure are 2 smash to smithereens and 3 ensnaring bridges.
As for the other ten slots....
Storm hate? May not see the deck and may depend on how it affects other archetypes.
Grave hate? Historically a crapshoot but also depends on how it affects other archetypes.
More blazebloods? Sure why not.
More anti life? After 3 vortex gets to be a little much.
More anti artifact? 2-3 smashes are likely right, any more or less and it's either a dead card in hand or you're dead to chalice/equipment.
Sulfur elemental? Extreme measure especially given the uptick in blazebloods.
Red blasts? This could be of interest as we now have the room to go heavy on this if you want that delver aspect, however the only spells I can think to want to hit are typically counter spells or show and tell. Or any tempo hit. Still likely not worth it, but something to explore.
Harsh mentor? New and worth testing but likely just comes in matches where you're already bringing in blazebloods.
Swiftspear? Now this one I like the idea of, because due to space and meta it looks like either she's in main, or lavaman and blaze bloods are main, I've yet to see both. She helps the 3rd turn goldfish and I think could be considered combo hate on that merit if you're on the anti creature package main.
Firecraft? Likely unneeded....however could shore up a weakness in play style vs some delver and tempo decks. Also happens to trade with though knot seer or a batterskull token 1 for 1 rather than you having to fireblast the thing.
After looking over lists as far back as pat Sullivan in 2011....it looks like the sideboard has always been our weakest point of decision making. We typically can't afford the splashs of modern, and seem rather torn on where are resources are best spent in the board.
I look forward to eventually getting better sideboard cards.
I've added 2 Plateau and 3 Deflecting Palm in my side, it's mostly for Reanimator/Show & Tell
Not sure it's worth splash... but I was tired of losing too Reanimator/Show & Tell
Yes. I've been wondering why we have not all started doing this for so long. Is there a reason why Deflecting Palm is an all star in modern burn but not normally discussed for legacy? I've made the switch to playing mostly modern burn recently because I was also tired of losing to those 2 decks.
Karakas is probably better (can't be countered, multiple use, can handle Iona & the deck were we want to have it doesn't usually play land hate)
Deflecting Palm has the up side of dealing damage & being useful in other match up (like burn, infect)
In my case I went with Palm because I din't own the Karakas

"What's your plan?" Gideon asked.
"Are you serious?" Chandra replied.
I have a friend desperate to play the Team Open in Atlanta next weekend, so apparently I only have to pay for my food and share of the gas, so I'm going to be in the Legacy seat w/Burn. I played Burn at GP Louisville in January and I still love the straightforwardness of the PSulli list from the first team event in Baltimore. Here is the list he was using for reference:
I know Firecraft was mostly for Miracles, but with Miracles gone, there are even more U/x decks now and not getting countered is still really strong.
The questions for me are:
1) 20 mountains or run fetches? Obviously, fetches make Blaze and Lavamancer good, but the deck works quite well w/o either a large percentage of the time. I have 11 red fetches if that is the route. Not against the fetches/Plateau/Palm in the board plan either as I can borrow a Plateau or 2 if needed.
2) The Flame Rift slot. Casting Flame Rift is really great and another spell in the deck that can take them down by 4 is always a good thing. I can also see a couple copies of Sulfuric Vortex making it into the main in place of a couple of them. Obviously, if I run fetches, having some number of Blaze main makes sense, altho those are just dead against a deck like Storm.
3) Pyrostatic Pillar seems solid in the board w/an increase in combo. Sulfur Elemental I ran as a 1 of in Louisville, but could see as a 2 if more folks are running D&T post-Vegas. 1 Chaos Warp as an answer to an indestructible 20/20 or just run Bridge (I own 2) ? Is some number of Faerie Macabre worthwhile w/the increase in B/R Reanimator?
re:ssquirrel
At my last legacy event the only game I lost was to Bant Stoneblade #BecauseBatterSkull make me really miss/regret not having Sulfuric Vortex in the sideboard. But my other matches all were easy wins thanks to Vexing Shusher actually. I originally played Exquisite Firecraft in that slot but when I ran out of room and only had room for 2x cards I gave those slots to the Shusher. I found out being able to repeatedly ignore their FoW's and Chalice of the Voids for "1" was awesome. Shusher single handedly won all my game 2 and 3. As for the land count and running basics. I play 20x mountains and just use Searing Blood as it hits all the same creatures that Blaze would (granted it has to die) but again the majority of the creatures that I was going to Blaze will die to S.Blood as well... The way I see basics vs. fetches is: How good do you want your Lavamancers to be? At which point I've never found myself in a situation that I've run out of spells in my yard to mulch up for Lavamancers so I just play basics.

For fun check out my janky combo primer: Turn 3 Grixis Combo
"Can't beat em' Jund em'!"
I ran Vortex in the main in Louisville and it did great work. Currently I don't have Lavamancers in the list, but I'm still considering them. Here is the list as I have it right now:
Part of the point of going fetchless is allowing you more control of your life total and potentially shutting off opposing Deathrite mana capabilities. To add them in and not utilize searing blaze I can not understand.
I like vortex/blaze/Lavamancer main myself and I've sideboard a pair of swiftspear currently...but that's because my area is jam packed with stoneblade.
Going to a be playing in some events this weekend, was looking for some generic sideboard advice... I know most of the basics but I guess I'm just looking for a sounding board.
Current list is the typical: 4/4/4/2 lavaman for creatures, all the typical bolts, only running 1 Searing Blaze main and 2 Sulphuric Vortex. 19 land, 8 fetches.
I'm debating a few things (going into a wide open, unknown meta)
Was looking at using Faerie Macabre in place of Tormod's Crypt (either 2 or 3) to try and stave off turn 1 reanimator tricks, preventing an Iona from hitting the field, plus it can hit some Dredge targets too. I suppose it's a matter of preference, but wanted to know what people thought. Is Surgical Extraction better?
I'm not against the 1 Blaze main, 2 in the side... but should I go to 3?
I'm thinking the Harsh Mentors can create a little room.... they aren't the worst but also aren't stellar (still wish I got to play them against |Top, even once...) Even the Pithing Needle can move if needed (although it does come in handy once in a while.)
Are there any other must have sideboard cards that I'm missing?
@Fel_15: I didn't see your post earlier otherwise would have responded. I think Macabre or Tormod's better than Extraction, but the latter is also a valid option. More Blazes is a meta choice. You should be fine with 3 total since you have Lavamancer, but I've run lists with 2 Lava and 6 total Searing effects so there's that. One card you might not have considered is Pyrostatic Pillar for against Storm. Harsh Mentor is decent against Aether Vial decks, so it's worth considering, though it and Pithing Needle would be the first I'd consider cutting.
@The Habbler: What would be the plan with it? I.e, what's the play sequence?
@Nevelo. With Mirage Mirror the plan is that if Emrakul, the Aeons Torn comes down we are able to tap 2 lands and swing in with our Emmy first since they usually don't have haste unless they are doing Sneak Attack type stuff. For their other creatures you are still able to copy them with open mana on that turn or the next turn if it does anything. Make your own Iona and try to race until they chump? Just some thoughts.
It can also copy Omniscience. I doubt that play does anything that often, but maybe you just empty your hand on them depending on your draw.
So I took the list I had posted a few above (the 20 mountain version) to a small Legacy event tonite. 9 people, bc the first round bye won out, we still had 2 undefeated in round 4. I beat Eldrazi 2-1, then Eldrazi 2-0, then I stole a round vs Sneak & Show 2-0. It was a $5 tourney and cash split between top 2, so we decided to split and play the round for the extra $5. He was on Mono Red Sneak Attack and beat me 2-0. So I won $20 and was pretty happy with things.
SB plans:
Every round side out Lava Spike since it's my least flexible 1cc spell.
vs Eldrazi and Mono Red Sneak Attack sided in 2 Smash and 2 Bridge.
vs Sneak & Show sided in 2 Bridge and 2 Pyrostatic Pillar.
Only reason to really consider keeping in Firecraft is that it's great to kill off Batterskull. Of course, it's only D&T and *Blade decks that runs that card, so probably fine to let them go. The question is what to replace it with? Harsh Mentor, Pyroblast, Tormod's Crypt, Ashen Rider, Volcanic Fallout, Searing Blaze are the things I am considering for the Firecraft replacement.
Trying to remember what else was there tonite. I remember Food Chain. I'll be honest, it was a small local event, I didn't really care about scouting everything out. I know some of the folks there have decks to switch between. For example, I know Food Chain was playing Sultai Control a few months ago. I know a guy who runs Omni Tell when he shows. We have a resident Pox master (and he has the expensive cards from Legends that I lack) who shows up sometimes too.
Thoughts?
PS Also, already bringing in 4 Blood and 1 Sudden Shock vs D&T. Sulfur Elemental kills 14 creatures in their deck. Worth keeping in the SB for this matchup or replace w/a couple other cards?

Honestly, you'll probably want more copies of Smash to Smithereens. It's basically a Searing Blaze that kills Batterskull, and it can also hit their Vials early on if you think it will make them stumble. I used to run 3 but I'm about to go up to a full playset in my board because the effect is just that good against them. It's also good against Chalice decks like your Eldrazi matchup because those decks tend to play Chalice on one against you since it shuts out over 1/3 of your deck.
Beyond Smash I feel like Red Elemental Blast might also be good in your sideboard considering the meta. There's better things to run than Sudden Shock.
This is currently the board I'm considering running:
I might play around with the numbers just to try and squeeze a third blast but I feel like it's our best option against Show and Tell. Alternatively I could just run 2 copies of Pyroclasm in that slot if I feel like Elves or DNT is more dominant in my local meta. However, I feel Searing Blood might actually be enough against those decks given my build. If that's the case, I could run 3 Blood and 4 Smash and have the last slot reserved for Grafdigger's Cage. It would look like this:
Also this note isn't really directed at you but it's more of a general observation. Harsh Mentor is actually pretty useless as a SB card. Whenever I'd play him, my opponent would simply just cast a removal spell, then proceed to crack the fetch or activate the ability Harsh Mentor was supposed to punish without taking any damage.
Here is the list I have landed on for local Legacy events. I think we had about 12 people last night. $5 a head, paid down to 4th. I got $10 in 4th b/c I lost to a friend making a 20/20 Marit Lage token on my T2 endstep 2 games in a row. Last week I mulled to 5 in match 1, game 1 and never saw a mountain before U?R Delver killed me. Lost game 3 to lose that round. Won all my other 3 rounds each night. Went 3-0-1 the week before that. Not really scared of any deck down there, altho Turbo Depths having the nut 2 games straight was tilting as hell.
Check Pile and Maverick were actually son and father respectively. I love doing things like siding in a set of Searing Blood, watching my opponent tap 4 for Gaddock Teeg and then killing it on end step, so I can burn and Fireblast next turn. He must not have been thinking about Price bc I watched him tap 4 to cast something, tapping his ghost quarter and I went ahead and Priced for 6 since he couldn't save himself at that point. PoP is so good in the format right now.
I won game 1 vs MRSA completely on the back of Sulfuric Vortex. Game 1 and 2 he had Chalice on 1 and 2. I won game 1 from Vortex damage and Rift Bolt. We were both at 5 and he ultimated Chandra for her emblem and started to cast SSG. I pointed out that puts him at 3 and he realized I would just kill him in response. So I let him not kill himself, let him drop to 3 from Vortex and when he tried to cast something else I Fireblasted him. Game 3 he just got flustered and screwed up some Chalice triggers, but this was the only game I had Swiftspear down first so all the cast triggers still helped kill him anyway.
Not enough people to win much money at the local Legacy events, but $20 and $10 in store credit is ok. If we had enough to pay down below T2 last week I would have cashed there too. Saving up for other things. Slow and steady. Funny thing is, the kid playing Czech Pile got 1st last night. My breakers sucked from the R1 loss, but I guess everyone ended up at x-1 or worse after the 4 rounds. Turbo Depths must have run into trouble after me bc he wasn't even there by the time we were starting R4. I'm sure his drop didn't help me out any either.
I'm basically new to Legacy and I've decided to play this deck since it's both strong and doesn't drain the bank account the way a lot of other Legacy decks do. My plan is to complete this deck by the end of September, practice hard for a month, and then go to the SCG Open in Washington DC at the end of October.
I looked at different lists, looks like the sideboard is where most of the difference is with this deck, so I picked and chose stuff from different sideboards that I liked. Here is what I want to build:
One question I have, since I'm new... why doesn't the deck play Blood Moon? With most of the other decks relying on fetches + duals, wouldn't it shut down a large part of the opposition? Is it just too slow?

Good luck in building the deck and I hope you have lots of fun in the legacy format
Blood Moon seemed to work really good in the Modern Format because the format is slower than legacy. On the flip side, I never understood the milticolor burn decks in the modern format because mono red with blood moon in the main is freak'n awesome. Not to mention the modern mono red burn player would always have an advantage from the shock/fetch damage.
In legacy burn we seldom want to play 3cc or higher spells. And most players believe that dropping a blood moon won't speed up the deck for the win. And in come cases by the time you play blood moon the opponent has the advantage.
Yeah, especially after the EMA set was released, Legacy Burn is cheaper to buy into than Modern. Friend of mine just finished Modern Burn recently, so I told him drop the $40 for the playsets of cards the deck uses that aren't in Modern and he will have a solid Legacy deck to run.
Your 60 is the exact same as my list and it's been feeling great lately. I had Firecraft in the board, but the general consensus is that it isn't worth having post-Miracles. If you replace them with anything, I would say pick any 3 cards from this list: Pyrostatic Pillar, Grafdigger's Cage, Searing Blood. Mindbreak is solid against Storm, but I don't own any. Pillar is great against Storm if you get a T2 and honestly it's good against most of the format. Blood kills everything that isn't a Reanimator target. Currently I swap Lava Spike out all the time since its the least flexible spell. Full playsets of Searing Blood and Smash to Smithereens make matches like Death & Taxes completely different. Play with the sideboard and see what you think of it, you'll get plenty of feedback here if you have questions.
Have fun!

2 Red Elemental Blast
3 Mindbreak Trap
4 Smash to Smithereens
2 Searing Blood
4 Tormod's Crypt
I might play around with the numbers just to try and squeeze a third blast but I feel like it's our best option against Show and Tell. Alternatively I could just run 2 copies of Pyroclasm in that slot if I feel like Elves or DNT is more dominant in my local meta. However, I feel Searing Blood might actually be enough against those decks given my build. If that's the case, I could run 3 Blood and 4 Smash and have the last slot reserved for Grafdigger's Cage. It would look like this:
1 Grafdigger's Cage
3 Searing Blood
3 Mindbreak Trap
4 Smash to Smithereens
4 Tormod's Crypt
Also this note isn't really directed at you but it's more of a general observation. Harsh Mentor is actually pretty useless as a SB card. Whenever I'd play him, my opponent would simply just cast a removal spell, then proceed to crack the fetch or activate the ability Harsh Mentor was supposed to punish without taking any damage.
4 Goblin Guide
4 Eidolon of the Great Revel

2 Flame Rift
2 Sulfuric Vortex
20 Mountain

Matches last night:
0-2 Turbo Depths
2-1 Mono Red Sneak Attack
2-0 Czech Pile
2-0 Maverick
I looked at different lists, looks like the sideboard is where most of the difference is with this deck, so I picked and chose stuff from different sideboards that I liked. Here is what I want to build:
12x Mountain
4x Wooded Foothills
4x Eidolon of the Great Revel
4x Goblin Guide
4x Monastery Swiftspear
4x Chain Lightning
2x Flame Rift
4x Lava Spike
4x Rift Bolt
4x Fireblast
4x Lightning Bolt
4x Price of Progress
2x Sulfuric Vortex
2x Ensnaring Bridge
3x Exquisite Firecraft
2x Mindbreak Trap
2x Searing Blood
4x Smash to Smithereens
2x Tormod's Crypt
In his Second 100 days - Yawgmoth's Bargain is unrestricted in Vintage.
What is going to happen in the Next 100 days!!!
P.S. Drop fetches if you aren't running Lavamancers nor Blazes. "Thinning" isn't a sufficient reason to run them alone.
2) Use the right number of each card.
3) Know your probabilities.
4) Print your deck lists; make yourself and your judges happier.
Have fun!
