I'm looking to get back into magic after some time away. Most of my cards are twenty years old, plus a few from brief returns in between. Sadly I don't have many great older cards. (I still remember when I was ten finding two double lands in my first starter deck. I had no clue what they were and immediately traded them to an adult for a very cool looking Armageddon Clock!) I'm looking to make a nice deck out of my existing cards, which are all pre-2002.
I like the threshold mechanic and don't have any madness cards. I think Land Grant, in addition to deck-thinning, complements threshold well. So does Lhurgoyf, and it's nostalgic I went with Instill Energy over Exploration because (i) I don't have Exploration and it's pricey, and (ii) I think it's more versatile in that it provides early mana ramping with the Llanowar Elves and Werebear, but stays useful later for defense and sacrifice to the Endless Wurms.
What do you think? Are there enough enchantments to fuel the card draw to in turn fuel the Wild Mongrels and threshold?
I'd also thought of replacing the Enchantresses, Instill Energies, and Presences with 4 each of Giant Growth, Howling Mine, and Black Vise, and switching out some of the Endless Wurms for Harvest Wurms. Seems like a deck that would cause trouble for anyone not ready for the vises, but get hammered otherwise. I'd love thoughts on this as well.
