So i've been reading up on a variety of different decks to see how they play when i came across something - why aren't newer legacy decks named properly anymore (and by properly, i mean completely off-kilter and weirdly)?
Example:
- Tinfins - named after some adultswim show sealab 2021. The crew of Sealab (along with a vapid gossip-show host, a bear in lederhosen and guest stars Kid 'n Play) star in a sneak preview special for the movie Tinfins, complete with plenty of ads for the restaurant Grizzlebee's: "You'll wish you had less fun."
- meathooks/counterhooks - sliver tribal, named because it looks like the slivers had hooks for hands. counterhooks was based off a more permission-heavy build and vial-based, favouring 2-drops over 1 and 3 drops.
- solidarity - deck inventor (forgot the name) saw one player blew out their opponent with a well-timed solidarity in a limited game. Then during testing, had only 14 cards in the sideboard, so they threw in a solidarity, as the 15th, and named the deck thusly (it's a mono-blue high tide deck)
- stompy - i've no idea where this came to be a chalice deck.
And the list goes on (oops all spells, cheerios, cephalid breakfast, maverick, death and taxes, deadguy ale, parfait, trainwerck...)
But now, all the new names are super boring... they're just named after the colour combination or speed or clutch cards/mechanics; grixis control, grixis tempo, miracles, BUG, and so on.
Is it too much to ask for you deck innovators to go back to the old-school style deck-naming conventions (i.e. obscure and unhelpful but memorable)? I mean y'all are ultra creative and help shake up the meta, and just a tiny bit more effort in the naming department please!
Some players are very creative with the deck names, others are not and sometimes the name is created by opponents in general. Sometimes the names are based on when it was made, what inspired the maker, and what players thought of the deck.
I like burn... I know the name is boring, but no matter how I want to change the name, players are going to see the deck as burn.
I wouldn't say Paul Sligh created the red weenie deck with a splash of burn, but because he took that deck to the tournament level, the deck happen to be called after him... Sligh. Is it creative?
On the other hand, I think 187 was a creative deck name. It was a standard deck that used creature coming in play effects (such as Man-o'-War and Nekrataal) and named it after the California Penal Code for Murder.
Then again, I think "The Deck" was a very least creative name, but that name was given by players who played against it... such as "That kid is playing 'The Deck'. I hate 'The Deck'. 'The Deck' was a solid control blue deck that I believed gotten noticed with Force of Will.
Wizards won't let you use unique names in coverage anymore, so any deck that gets popular will be assigned a boring name by them to show on their graphics.

This, is seriously sucky.
I also heard recently on a podcast that wizards was actively trying to stop organisers from hosting legacy events. Not sure how true it actually is, but not allowing players to give their decks cool names seems counter to what they want to have (i.e. personable/characterful decks/players).
Sad to know that. Liked all the cool deck names in legacy when I was active years ago. Names like Nic-Fit, Maverick, T.E.S (The Epic Storm), etc. Makes the decks memorable to me.

The Deck is Brian Weissman's 1996(?) deck. It's a UWr deck that is largely considered the first deck that solved the meta at the time.
From what I recall, Force of Will was printed after the decks creation. It would've been too expensive to include anyways as there are too few blue cards to discard for it.
I believe the 2-card-monte deck is called that because of painter-grindstone, key-vault, helm-leyline. I think it's just called that 'cuz of all the 2-card-combos that exist in the deck (unfortunately, mine just has the one).
painter 3ball, painter stompy or something i guess is its name for now. Maybe bob ross stompy could catch on though.
In general, I think names that just have a story behind them have been popular to some, but I’ve never felt like names were appropriate because they never have anything to do with the deck. Nicfit, for example makes no sense, while sneak & show does.
I believe the name nicfit comes from a non-native english speaker (no idea who it is; apologies for that). It was the 'nice fit' of having veteran explorer and bigger CMC cards that named the deck so.
One deck name i recently came across is 'stryfo pile'. It's really weird, since the deck's "inventor", stryfo, apparently doesn't call his own deck that (or at least thats what he said in an interview i was listening to). Really bizarre.
I still think though, that a nonsensical name like stryfo pile or nicfit or strawberry shortcake or solidarity is still nicer than just a boring/too-descriptive name like 4-colour control or BUG control.

mono blue painter
mono blue stompy (with painter combo)?
the mono blue stompy could be something like "blue splash" maybe? it's not so brilliant though.

For example, my green weenie deck is called BENCHPRESS. I have no idea why, I have just always named them like that.
hilariously fun to play. not the greatest, but is good fun.

"Benchpress" for a green aggro deck? It's a fitting name, since all the green creatures are athletic and muscle toned?
