Well I've been meaning to get around to this for a while so as the title suggests, what is a good set up for recording live games? Minimally I would like a top down view but am not sure what kind of stand/frame/other will work best. A friend has his stuff still from his twitch channel, but I think we can do better then it.
Bottom line, I'm looking for gear/set up suggestions as I think I would like to avoid a head mounted gopro.

Starcity has decent rig, built to record 2 games at once. Comes out to 6 cameras total,3 for each game (One up top facing straight down, one for each player's faces). I can't remember if it's a metal frame or PVC, though (last time I was camera feature match was almost 2 years ago).
Personally, when we record, we just use a tripod and a cheap webcam for it. Just make sure you check the glare and the area limits of the camera. If you're going to do regular audio, make sure the acoustics aren't ***** (other people in the background, etc). Microphones wouldn't be a bad idea, and if you can, try to find a room that won't echo. There's a lot of ways to manage that, for example:
edit: I have no idea if the video will load here. If not, the actual link is here
There was also a really good flash on Newgrounds that summed it up really well and was pretty amusing as well, but I can't seem to find it now :-\
I guess I could ask if you're planning on publishing this out using it for testing purposes. If the former, do your best to make sure you've got the cards readable, crisp audio, few external distractions. A top-down view would probably work best. Basically, watch some bad examples on YouTube and find what you want to complain about most :-P
If for personal use, big picture, as long as you can figure out what everything is and anything else doesn't bother you, you could take a cheap laptop and prop it up on binders (or whatever). Budget also comes into account to a point, but if you already have the camera and tripod, just pay around with it until you find what works.
My crew was joking about supergluing the tripod to the wall to get that top-down view, but something practical is probably better.

I believe that SCG uses a metal frame now. Either way as Pops said our group just uses a tripod with a webcam. Best buy sells some pretty nice ones that record in hd and have some nice built in mics. As for the tripod we bought a crappy one from Walmart that seems to be doing fine. The important part is the set up. If you put the tripod on the table just make sure it doesn't shake when people put their elbow on the table, take a card from your deck and slide it slowly around your recording area and see if you can read it in every spot, and finally do a quick record to see how the audio will be. Also if you plan on streaming make sure your computer can handle it, for the labtop we tried to use couldn't and it was a nasty surprise. Either way just do a quick google search and you can find everything you need to know.
So I guess no one here has recorded a game or been to an SCG event and noticed their set up?
I have. In fact, I know one of their production guys.
For the price of their full kit (frames, mounts, cameras, tricaster, etc.), you could either get yourself a bunch of Legacy decks, or a rather nice car. I suspect that's a bit more than what you want to be doing.
Well since I'm on houses worth of cards I'm not sure if that's an issue, but again the goal is to determine a way that will be optimal for me to use. Citing how scg runs their production is simply a means for a lay person to describe an idea for me that most people have seen the result of. Poppleseed answered that query for me already and thus helped my end goal.
