Hey! I'm curious about Legacy and would like to find a deck that will interest me. I have so many questions about the meta! However, I'll try not to ask them here I'm looking for something that fits with my play style rather than what pieces I own, I don't mind buying into the format a little (but overlap with what I have would be nice!). I play Command a fair amount but I have mostly been playing Modern for quite some time now and the competitive decks that I've played (and still have some pieces of) are the following:
Could anyone please direct me towards a deck that has a blend of creatures and spells in a tempo/aggro-control fashion? I definitely like swinging in and I also like countering things. Something non-linear would be nice, combo is an option if it is perhaps akin to what Twin used to be like when it wasn't banned in modern (is that deck even played in this format?). I also really like fair decks but I have no idea what kind of viability strategies have here, any help would be great!
I played Standard and Modern for a while and always preferred more control focused decks. So far i was most interested in control, tempo and combo decks. After watching a few Legacy videos on Youtube i got really interested in the format.
Blue is pretty much a must. Brainstorm, Ponder and FoW should be included and i want to play sth with a high skillcap, as it will probably be me my only Legacy deck. Price is not an issue cause i'm only playing on mtgo and duals are affordable.
It doesn't matter if the deck is difficult to play or requires knowledge of the format, as i'm willing to suffer through it. I already have Snapcaster, Ancestral Vision and a lot of blue, black and white modern stuff.
I would flavor wise prob tend to sth like bug, but even there are so many possibilities
Thanks in advance
If you like blue and control, you should try Miracles as it's the type of hard blue control deck that you can't get in other formats. It's good that you don't mind suffering
Thanks for the reply. Almost as if you could read my mind
I assumed the thread was kinda inactive, so I built Sultai Delver. My Visions got sold in the process, but out of the mentioned Decks Shardless is probably the least interesting for me.
Delver is a lot of fun, the Deck punishes mistakes hard and rewards perfect sequencing, which unfortunately led to me defeating myself more often than I want to admit.
As I started with a list containing Leovold and TNN, I even brewed something similar to the Leovold BUG Control you've mentioned.
Miracles and Storm are basically the next options. At this point it's more likely to be Miracles due to the easy transition to Gush Mentor in Vintage.
I'll probably end up playing all those decks eventually and getting rid of most of my Modern cards will speed up the process.
The eternal formats offer more to me than to play vs Aggro and Tron in Modern 24/7. Blue based control decks are pretty much way to go and i always preferred counter battles over creature combat. Higher powerlevel means more fun in Blue and Legacy seems to be better balanced overall.
Guess you can't mess up a format you never pay attention to, huh?
Hi, could you be a bit more specific please? Do you want control, midrange or agro? Along the lines your friends decks i'dd suggest merfolk, or perhaps Naya burn, the latter is the cheaper deck but merfolk have a little more depth to them.

If you really don't want to regret the purchase, testing out candidate decks is probably the only way to reliably avoid that possibility.
Merfolk is indeed very good right now, better than it has been for a long time. It's not all peaches and sunshine, of course, but it does function more or less as it's always meant to: exploiting plentiful islands to put a big, unblockable army into the red zone.
Control on a budget is horrible. In fact decks like Pox often attract people because they see no dual lands and lots of cheap cards, Lilly aside. But those type of decks are tier 2/3 at best, and they all work better with access to expensive legends cards and require extensive practice. Even the aggro rack builds would probably bust your budget.
Weapon X's call is good.
For other cheap decks- manaless dredge is effective and can be upgraded to board in FOW as money allows. The versions without are decent, but you die to permanent gravehate resolving.
Burn is cheap but not combo/control. It is very good, however.
Tezzeret Affinity is pretty cheap, just a couple of ancient tombs and a common manabase, and it can be transferred into two formats with a little extra investment, but again is not combo. It is quite good, catches people unawares in medium size events. As money allows you could turn it into the control/combo deck baed on tezzeret/leyline of the void/helm but that is expensive due to the Forces.
I've been interested in Legacy for some time, and now that my gf and best friend are willing to jump in, I want to as well.
My main goal is to build a deck that both fits my playstyle, and has a fun, even matchup against their decks, Burn and Merfolk. I don't want to constantly win or lose to either of these decks if possible (If there isn't exactly a 50/50 deck, I'd rather be unfavored, but not drastically).
Cards I own: Modern BGx (Lilianas, Goyfs, Thoughtseize, Fatal Push, Decay, Noble, fetches, etc), and URx (Snaps, Delver, Cliques, Bolts, K Commands, delve creatures, fetches, etc)
Cards that are appealing for me to play with that I don't own: Deathrite Shaman, JtMS, Leovold, Brainstorm, FoW, Hymn, Cabal Therapy, Strix, Flusterstorm, Daze, Wasteland,SFM, Stifle, etc. Similar to why I play BGx in Modern, I like forcing interesting and interactive games against any deck. I love Combo and Aggro decks, and seeing them work through a maze of disruption seems to create fun for both players
No real budget constraint. The duals are of course going to hurt the most, but they seem unavoidable due to wanting to play this style of deck. I would probably use Shocks until I can get them, and focus on the other pieces first, but I imagine this will be very bad against Merfolk, and especially burn (And makes Daze bad unless I have Island).
Any help at all will be greatly appreciated. I see a good half dozen decks that fit in the range of what I want to play, the tough part is figuring out their matchup against those two decks (Since I am new to Legacy, I can't really test myself, as it will take some time for me to play optimally with the deck).
So I finally (2 years later) got around to finishing the last half-dozen cards for RB Reanimator. I've been playing it a bit for the past few weeks, but I keep running in to Reanimator Depths online. Reanimator Depths looks like a ton of fun as well, and it wouldn't be that much more expensive to convert my current list over. Which is better positioned in the meta right now?
Hi, I would like to enter in the format and I tested some decks on cockatrice and I am currently hesitating betwin these 3 decks:
- Uw helmet control
- Belcher
- Dredge
Which one is the most competitive in the atcual meta? Thanks !!
Do you plan to play in paper or on MTGO?
If in paper, do you mostly expect play in like local weeklies or at large events?
Also:
By "Dredge", do you mean, LED Dredge, Manaless dredge, or a budget non-LED list with mana?
Could you post or link to the Helm list for reference?

Yo. Played Pox when I was a kid back when Extended was a thing, saw the rise of Bob, Tarmogoyf, and snap, ended up leaving eternal formats and moved towards commander for awhile. I've always loved legacy, and have always thought it was the best format.
I recently got a new job and am going to have a lot more income.
I love playing midrange and control builds, and like to play 'fair magic'.
Favorite color is black.
I was building abzan Nic Fit for awhile, but feel like that's a deck that can really only shine when one knows the meta around them.
I have the whole of the list sans the duals and half the fetches.
I've been looking at Death and Taxes strategies, but also, my love for Bob has been grilling me something fierce.
What deck should I run?
Is it really so simple as to add a few scrubs into a DnT list with like 3 bobs and call it a day?
I'd imagine that in that scenario I could move SoFI into the side.
I'm not married with that idea either. Thanks for your time.
I like playing control, tempo, or aggro decks, but will play almost anything.
Budget is an issue, as it may take some time for me to build a $100 dollar deck. Suggestions what to play or build towards are welcome.
I've been looking at a similar problem - considering MTGO for some legacy play, don't want to sink a ton of money into it. Keeping in mind that I'm not an MTGO guy and don't know meta/prices all that well, my favorite budget to "actual" deck path is burn → UR delver → other delver variants. You can build a passable burn deck for ~$100. Pick up Forces, fetches, and Volcs over time to transition into a more aggressive UR delver list. Grab Wastelands to open up more delver options, then you can either play around more with UR by grabbing some number of Snapcasters/True-Names and going more midrange, or grabbing more duals/fetches to shift into RUG or Grixis delver. It gives you a decent deck at each step and having Forces, Wastelands, fetches, and duals fit into a lot of legacy decks, so you'll have some freedom to change decks down the line.
Like I mentioned above, I'm looking into MTGO for some extra legacy play time and I'm fishing for deck ideas. If I pull the trigger, I'll trade in some spare paper cards for credit to get started. I'm expecting a budget in the range of $300-500. I'd like to grab something that features fetches so I can bounce around between decks and/or formats down the line. I'm thinking Aluren (either Imperial Recruiter or BUG variant), which is a favorite paper deck and within my budget, but I have some concerns about it with all of the clicking and the clock. Any thoughts on that or alternate deck suggestions?

In terms of 'grindy' decks...
Czech Pile / 4C Control is a very grindy midrange/control deck. It has a very expensive manabase, and can sometimes suffer from grinding forever and not having a clock, but access to UBRG gives it plenty of flexibility. Shardless BUG is also very viable, though it has been a bit 'replaced' by Czech Pile recently.
Aluren is a grindy midrange/combo deck, with access to blue library manipulation, countermagic and discard as desired, and 'value creatures', as well as the namesake combo finish.
Miracles is my choice for a 'pure' control deck. Every win has to be earned, and the deck a lot of strong points, ranging from a stable mana base with 6+ basics, to a non-creature win condition (Jace), to a "one-turn-kill" win condition (Entreat the Angels, sometimes Monastery Mentor) that allows you to control the game and then close it out quickly. There is also substantial overlap with UW Landstill, so you can swap between them if you want.
For non-blue options...
Nic Fit and Maverick, as Vissah mentioned, are both solid choices. Jund as well. All of these will rely on discard and/or hatebears rather than countermagic to fight combo, and thus it may be a little more of an uphill struggle against combo decks, but if you like the GBx playstyle in Legacy these should be solid options. I'm not experienced in actually playing these decks, but from playing against them, I'd say Maverick is probably the strongest of these decks with access to white (Gaddock Teeg, Thalia, Containment Priest, etc.) and the Green Sun's Zenith package.

Legacy:UWR Miracles (MTGS Primer) || Modern:UWR Jeskai Control Commander:UBR Jeleva/Kess Storm, UR Mizzix Combo, U Rayne/Azami Wizards
An appallingly dull fellow, unimaginative, timid, lacking in initiative, spineless, easily dominated, no sense of humour, tedious company, and irrepressibly drab and awful.
Hey guys, Im thinking about getting into legacy. I played commander only (DC20/leviathan) for long time but I dont have large collection of cards. Im also limited by budget - not that big limit but there is some.
I cant decide between dredge or UR delver.
The thing is, that for dredge I cant afford to get LEDs and for delver I cant get volcanics/FoW (have one of each for my commander decks so I can use those). I realy cant decide, playstyle wise it seems UR delver is more fit for me while dredge just have the feeling of legacy deck and doing unfair things that you cant realy do in other formats
They're vastly different decks, so you should proxy and playtest them extensively.
Both decks will help you build toward other Legacy decks. LED Dredge helps you build towards Storm, while UR Delver builds towards lots of other decks, especially if you don't spend your whole budget on Volcanic Islands.
Both decks are probably playable on a budget. I'm pretty sure there are LED-less Dredge decks, and for UR Delver, a playset of Force of Will is pretty necessary, but you can get by with Steam Vents. Try to fetch basic Island when possible to have a pain-free land to Daze with, but otherwise just accept that you'll take some shock damage. Against most decks, it won't matter too much, as you'll have the faster clock and can take some damage from shocklands.
As far as 'feeling like a Legacy deck', UR Delver certainly has the 'feel' of a Legacy deck, in terms of being able to play Delver, Ponder, Brainstorm, Daze, and Force of Will. But it's still a 'fair' deck, and it's really up to you whether you prefer playing a fair Delver deck, or whether you want to try to do the 'broken' thing. UR Delver is harder to hate out, while if you play Dredge you should expect to be 1-0 in most matches and then face a lot of hate post-board. Only you can decide which you prefer. (But my two cents: UR Delver, no question. Play it forever, or eventually try to build into Grixis Delver, Miracles, etc.)

Hey everyone, I'm going to a Team Constructed event in April and besides some experience on Cockatrice/Xmage, I'm new to the format. I've only got about $1500 to drop on the deck, and I was leaning towards a Nic Fit list based around Birthing Pod, but then I remembered that Kolaghan's Command ruined one of my best matchups. I've also been looking into Maverick, but I'm not sure if the playstyle is one I'd like. What deck should I play?

$1500 should be plenty to build most any deck, as long as you're willing to make some budget concessions.

Legacy provides many options if you like tempo.
There are the Delver variants:
Team America (BUG)
4-Color AKA bUrg AKA Bug in a Rug AKA Castlevania
Grixis
More out of favor Delver decks: Canadian Thresh (RUG)

It's not pure control, but there are two control decks in your BUG colors:

You mentioned wanting a high skill cap and sometimes liking combo, as well as liking blue, so you could look at a Storm deck.
