No, it was broken, that is why they have taken action. They don't ban cards now that are not the highest quality now, and they do not ban lightly. It was stupidly good and meant that every delver deck was grixis, and meant 4c control was always the same.
There will not be another pile... A 4c deck that runs blood moon in a wasteland format? No chance. It will be 3col at best and wasteland/crucible will work again, Reanimator will get better game ones. UR delver is very different, it is burn with fow. Rug is Rug delver, it plays very differently to grixis and the ban will mean a variety of delver decks, not just grixis.
I am curious to know what you think Legacy's issues are.
I dont see why you care about what I think about legacy lol. Format is not very relevant in competitive play now a days and most people dont give a crap about the format being balanced. Its always going to be a Force of Will/Brainstorm with lots of combo and death/taxes variants format. Banning deahtrite does absolutely nothing to change the kind of format Legacy is. I dont see either how you think 4c was such a big deal. It was just a 4c midrange / control deck, why would that need any banning?
Legacy doesnt need to be like modern in that the format needs diversity via the ban list. Cards shouldnt be banned to shake up a metagame. Deathrite wasnt overpowered. Very good yes, but not much stronger than many other legacy cards.
That is the why. Everyone plays it. People don’t adapt to that kind of card. A lot of the best spells cost 1 so everyone plays misstep to counter them to counter other missteps.

Why was mental misstep banned? Yeah, lot of the format is 1 mana spells, but you can also run it yourself or run stuff that cost more than 1 mana.
Because players cannot handle getting their brainstorm countered on turn 1. That's the reason why the card was banned.
I'm not sure if that was a serious comment or not, but it's partially true, i suppose.
The main reason is that the best way to combat it is to play 4-of in your own deck. It warped deck building, and even if you're not going to play any 1-CMC cards, you're still likely going to play mental mistep.
On a slightly more serious note, i can see frantic search getting unbanned. But that's the high tide player in me.

Yeah, this is the controversy of the banning. There were players (pro players) that claimed that Mental Misstep turn Legacy into a coin toss format, because brainstorm was the common target. This was a major factor when any deck Burn, Goblins, Stompy, etc had a free card that could countered brainstorm on zero turn. Most decks blue decks playing brainstorm couldn't handle the early turn lost, especially against burn, goblins, stompy or such janks. It also hurt the decks because they got themseleves into playing Mental Misstep (which watered down their builds) so they can counter Mental Misstep instead of using a force of will.
Later the argument was switched to everybody was playing 4 Mental Missteps in a deck and we have 56 other cards.
Personally, I enjoyed the Mental Misstep legacy format because I don't agree that we should have solid consistence in magic. But I'm not a pro player, even though I've been playing this game since 1996... On the other hand, I believe pro magic players are worst, more worse those investing in Magic cards. Because they see the game in a gambling perspective, even though they don't want to admit they do, otherwise, Mental Misstep wouldnt be banned.
Anyway that's my feelings about the banning...
