I try to use black borders for all my cards unless they are dual lands where Revised is fine. If I was sold on a certain color combination for life, I might would upgrade them to a foreign version. I do however use white bordered Swords to Plowshares because its my favorite art for the card. The beta version is just so hard to come by and not really a feasible upgrade for me when the cost could go towards another dual land for a different deck, etc. I use unhinged basics if the decks run any and I typically shy away from foils unless that's all I have of a certain card.
I like the Ice Age art on StP myself.

To me, part of Legacy's allure is the breadth of different decks to choose from. Right now, I have BUG built (if not the best version), Storm 95% built, Maverick 90% built, and I'm planning to start piecing together Enchantress and Miracles. Five very different decks with a wide variety of playstyles, paths to victory, etc. And each one of them is quite expensive; discounting some overlap (BUG and Miracles both use Jace and Force, Maverick and Enchantress both use Windswept Heath and Savannah), there's some $5,000 worth of cards if I use the cheapest versions of the various cards (no MPR or Judge Wastelands, all Revised duals).
If I had a spare thousand to blow, I'd rather pick up staples for another deck - High Tide comes to mind as the next deck to build - instead of changing my perfectly useable revised Underground Seas for FBB or Beta.
In a hypothetical world where I have all the cards to play 8 or 9 decks, sure, why not? But I live in a world of constrained resources, and my choice is pretty simple.

I just do the unhinged/unglued lands thing... The most pimp deck I ever saw was when I played against a RUG thresh deck that had all MINT black border duals, foil goyfs, judge bolts, ... 12 of them, His deck must have been worth 16-18 grand at least. It shouldn't have been, but it was a bit intimidating playing against such valuable cardboard!
I like foreign stuff, extended art. and some of the "classier" foils, I have Japanese Foil MM Brainstorms, Japanese 4th Bolts (black bordered), Japanese Jaces and Liliana's, Foil Onslaught Fetches, Japanese Zen fetches, miscut sphinx's revelation, and plenty of other stuff I can't think of off the top of my head. I only use unhinged and Guru basic lands (never mix and match of course). Such a pimp snob. My duals are revised and unlimited tho : /

Foiled out anything available for High Tide, then did alter art for the high tide's themselves, got the force's signed, turnabout has an alternate version available from something called IDW from some comic or magazine thing or, something, didn't do anything for meditate/time spiral/candelabra of tawnos, although candels are still the most expensive card in the deck so I think they're safe as is. For the fetches I went with DCI Polluted Deltas & Flooded Strands.
I'm weird. I prefer new card frame, Non foil, English cards. I really really dislike foils unless its the only way to get something in the new card frame or if the art is better on a foil only version.
I'm doing everything I can to get my RU Nivmagus deck into the new card frame. Just missing 2 Daze and 3 Price of Progress. Its a shame force and volcanic island won't ever get the new card frame treatment.
Edit: I also prefer arena league or the special foreign lands. I don't care at all about betas. I just like the art of the special cards and the arenas
Call me crazy but... the only pimp factor I want for my legacy deck is old borders, and black borders. And try to try original set prints as much as possible. I can't stand foils and full frames etc.

I play lands, which puts me in a tough spot: many of the cards aren't available in new or old borders, some are, but only as FTV (which is negative pimp), others are hard to find in a black border version (Duals mostly). So I've decided my personal pimp factor will be non-foil, oldest printing when available.
Oh, I thought he was talking about playing a spell that is countering a spell with counters on it as it comes into play, but I see you guys were just discussing whether he was flashing a creature with flash in order to flash a flashback or just flashing a creature with flash but not needing flash in order to flashback a spell without flash.
I like to have everything black boardered (except for my revised duals), but other than that I just put in my favorite basics lands, in foil if the set had foils.
Having a >$1000 deck is lavish enough for me.

Short answer yes, I do try to gather iconic foils or older cards I really like. I have all Revised Duals and a few Unlimited (Pimp enough for me/Better than FBB IMO). Only English, Need 1 more foil Mom!

Very understandable. I completely agreed with this logic for myself until recently. In addition to all the UW staples I have Maverick and Merfolk built, so I could have more decks to play with. I keep finding myself coming back to UW though, even when I thought one of the other decks would be better suited for the meta. Once I came to this realization I focused my efforts on pimping out the cards I knew I wanted to play. To each his own, I definitely understand where you're coming from.
Can someone explain to me why Beta basics are so popular? Is it just the fact that its beta or something? I don't really understand it.
There are so many different basic lands that its a really cool way to pimp out the deck. Betas are neat, but the Asian or European Land programs are sweet, Arena lands are sweet, Gurus are obviously nice but they break the bank, MPS lands are obnoxious as hell, etc.
I'm just wondering why so many people go with betas when lands are easily one of the coolest and most unique ways to pimp your deck.

Like many things, there are many magic 'purists' out there. To them, playing with Alpha/Beta is how the game is meant to be played. They enjoy playing cards from the root of the game. I suspect that there is often a lot of nostalgia associated with A/B cards as well.

This. For me at least. I vastly prefer older cards, because they remind of playing the game as a kid. I don't really like foils much. I don't hate them, but I dislike have a mishmash of foil/non-foil in a deck and with Legacy some staples just aren't available in foil. My version of pimp is English, oldest edition, as minty as possible (except EDH generals, which I prefer to be more garish, i.e. Japanese/German/Russian/Korean foil).
Edit: it isn't just the fact that they're old that I enjoy. I actually find them to be more aesthetically pleasing, though I do enjoy the fact that they feel old. I feel more like a wizard casting an ancient spell with the older cards, as opposed to some dorky dude with a new flashy piece of technology with the newer cards, not to offend those who prefer newer frame, just my personal opinion. That being said there are some fantastic basic lands that aren't beta. This plains in foil is stunning imo: http://magiccards.info/od/en/333.html

Since I tend to use the beta lands I have over others I'll at least give you my reason for it.
1. While the art isn't amazingly spectacular, all of them have a nice simplistic serenity to them that I appreciate more than a lot of the more busy pieces of some of the more modern basic land art.
2. Old frame black border.
3. The usage of the lands actually saying "Tap" for some reason amuses me to no end which is one of the main reasons that I use them over my second choice which is Ice Age basics.
My Dreadstill has Alpha Islands. That's about as pimp as I'm making it.

1) Because Beta is pimp
2) Because of the dark black borders and the rich colors
3) Because it says "Tap to add X to your mana pool". None of the tap symbol shenanigans or even worse the big mana symbol in the middle of your text box.

Due to real-life obligations, I am taking a long break from Magic which may include missing the local Legacy GP. Apologies for not being able to keep my threads updated.
1) Because Beta is pimp
2) Because of the dark black borders and the rich colors
3) Because it says "Tap to add X to your mana pool". None of the tap symbol shenanigans or even worse the big mana symbol in the middle of your text box.
But what if you prefer the alternative?
I do like beta and alpha lands for their uniqueness and antiquity, and I've considered getting some for that reason. However, I typically go for lands that have the art that appeals to me the most. For instance, I got 13 matching foil shards of alara islands (#236) for my high tide deck. I like full art lands and all, but I really like the art on that particular island, and getting them in foil was pretty affordable.
Sadly, most legacy staples are 3 or 4 times more in foil than they are regular. Even something as new as deathrite shaman follows this trend: regular ones are $18, foil are $60. Way more than standard staple foils. For that reason, foiling out or pimping out a legacy deck is just extremely costly. I would like to get some pimp things over time, but for now, I'd rather just focus on getting the deck built.
I hate foils, but I've been bitten by the "Pimp" bug too.
What I do is buy Japanese cards. The only deck I play (Doomsday) is 100% Japanese except for the Dual Lands and the Extended-Art Ponders because they aren't available in Japanese.
Trying to get every Legacy Staple in Japanese actually sounds insane to me and I would run myself into the ground if I tried to do it, so I set a different goal for myself. I seriously only play Storm decks, so my long-term goal is to get the oldest Japanese version of every card that is a staple in LED Storm decks. I'm not that far off at the moment--I'm missing a bunch of cheap sideboard cards that would be no problem to pick up when/if I need them; I'm missing all the cards that are strictly Belcher/SI because Charbelcher is oddly hard to find and finding 4 Japanese Cruel Bargains is like chasing a unicorn; and I'm also missing FBB City of Brass because that card is 40 dollars that I don't want to spend yet because I'm not playing TES.
Other than that, I own a set of 40 Fetchlands in Japanese because they were easy to trade for.
When it comes to things that i have that can be considered "pimped" out, i do not go out of my way to get them, for the most part. I generally just like FNM promo's and or other promo cards. Outside of that...everything else is gotten by luck or chance.
