I dislike foils, but any basic lands I use in decks absolutely must be Beta.
I wish I could afford to go with Beta duals, but my dual collection is basically complete at this point, so that's not happening.
I just realized I like Chinese (simplified, since traditional is too cluttered, and I can read simplified with ease). I now have Chinese plains, and foil chinese kiln fiends for kiln-fiend combo.
Mint Beta basics are some of the most gratifying cards I own. Someone might never really appreciate them unless you seen them in person. So beautiful enjoy
I agree. Once you see them in person, you realize how beautiful they are. I have 1 beta plains, getting more beta plains (and also Chinese plains).

I do not go for the pimp as much as I go for the "clean" look.
I play only non-foils.
All cards with the same name look identical. This means that they are from the exact same set, but also that I get the same language and illustration of the card. It also means that if I have anything added to multiple cards with the same name, like a signature or alter, I will want it done in exactly the same way for all of them.
In addition to that, I have some things I like:
Full-art basic lands. This means that basic land from Unhinged and full-art Zendikar are my favourites by miles and miles. I got enough Zendikar full-art basic lands, but I am working on Unhinged.
Card text matching oracle text. For example, I prefer Swords to Plowshares from "Duel Decks: Elspeth vs. Tezzeret" to other printings of the card.
Certain illustrations are preferred over others of the same card, such as the Hymn to Tourach illustration by Susan van Camp.
Some things I just don't care about:
How expensive a card is.
How rare a card is.
Age, or whether the card is from the original printing.
Black or white border.
I really like that many players make their decks look a certain way, and that different players express themselves differently that way. There are many ways to take the looks of your decks, and it is interesting to see what directions other players have taken their piles in.
Foiling out does nothing for me but I do like to own the ABUR versions of cards even if they have seen reprint for cheaper. It is more a nostalgia thing for me than anything else as I was introduced to magic through MtG:Shandalar so I have an emotional attachment to those images.

There are 10 types of people in this world, those that understand binary and those that don't.
I recently acquired a french Savanna, and I'm thinking about getting more french cards. For some reason, the foreign duals seem to have a much more "crisp" look than the English ones I have.

I already know what I look like. That's why I'm there.
I agree. Once you see them in person, you realize how beautiful they are.
No one makes a plains like John Avon. And I'll take a DQ before I play any basic plains he didn't draw. (And I prefer the panorama from Ice Age, and if possible I try to assemble it while playing)

What's the big deal? You could have played multiple Righteous Avengers for years now.
My UWx landstill was 80% pimped (foils, signed, and altered). That's the closest I have had. Since then, I don't care. Sometimes I look to pick up an altered card or the promo if it's worth it. I've been buying standard versions of cards for a while though.

I mean, hell, we're all on a forum for something that most people would describe as a "children's card game"...do what makes you happy. You are never too old to enjoy yourself.
If I play any foils in my deck, I play more than just one set of foils or none at all. Other than that, I focus on black border unless I'm playing my Revised lands.
For example in Jund, I have Judge Foil Confidants, so I also went out and got a few more foils for the deck that didn't cost me too much more. I'm also happy to spend a little more for a card if I'd rather have another version, but the difference between things like black border Red Elemental Blasts and Revised Blasts is too huge a gap.
I foiled out most of a deck. (Lands) Now I can't stop looking for foils for future decks.
a friend of mine has a really sweet pimped out lands deck. Everything that can be foil is, and the dual are all black boarder. The basics are all gurus. It looks really nice.
I personally love to foil out the decks. Right now working towards jace. I am not too big a fan of guru lands. I would much rather foil unhinged basics.
Double sleeving a deck is easy to maintain. I just perfect-fit all my cards no matter what it is. They sit in my binder in the perfect-fits. I don't ever take them out unless they get damaged.
Shuffling a perfect fit deck is easy. They actually sleeve shuffle better because there's a larger space between the edges of the sleeve. The deck is slightly bigger but a 60 card deck easily fits in your hands.
Foils do bend but that's not really an issue. Never been called out in a tournament not that they can call me out because its extremely hard to tell which card is foil when its sitting in your deck. The top card doesn't bend to a significant degree to show anything. Even normal cards doesn't sit flat like a credit card.
I honestly can't see how you can tell everyone Foils are hard to resell while you covet foreign cards which is the hardest thing to resell ever (unless you price it the same). Foils are actually really easy to resell. If I list a foil Jace at $500 it will be gone in no time. People who want it would be looking at my auction for sure. While listing a regular Jace at $100 is no guarantee, every vendor has a stack and who knows how many others are selling on ebay as well.
Yes, but It has crossed my mind that someone "could" say you have marked cards in your deck.
Sorry to reply to this so late, but the rule *used* to be that everything had to be either all Beta or all Alpha or sleeved in a way that you couldn't tell what cards were what because you could mark cards fairly easily. This was when MTG first started and before sleeves were popular. I actually think this is still in effect but I'm honestly not 100%, I would assume it is since there is an obvious difference between the two. Maybe someone can chime in on this?
As for pimping, I think running a deck costing over $1,000 should be pimp enough. Duals alone with that colored text box is so sexy to me. But I run APAC/Arena League basics because reminder text on lands is pimp to me lol.
Man, I'm just getting into Legacy, but the only Cabal Therapy, Lilianna of the Veil, and Duress that I could find are either foil or the Graveborn ones.

It's still the same way with alpha/beta and such. Although no one plays with unsleeved alpha cards nowadays and if they do they are literally tearing up money unless they're samite healers or some bulk common but even then people buy bulk alpha commons and uncommons.
I go for the pimp option if I have the money and the pimp option is to my taste (korean wastelands come to mind. I own 4.)

"Yawgmoth," Freyalise whispered as she set the bomb, "now you will pay for your treachery."
I've really been feeling unlimited duals lately. Got two Badlands last month and just won two Bayous (might venture into Jund). All 4 pretty much mint and nice n white. Still on the foreign foils with two abrupt decays a stifle and a Portuguese vindicate from January.

The only thing I can't live with are White border... I hate them... and somehow I prefer the old frames to the new ones,
this,
and Seventh edition foils, which have some of the oldest and nices artwork
those are the only foils I still own (seventh in general)
This.
I hate white border and new frames, old frames are way more beautiful and they represent the current mana better, also the basic lands, I simply can't stand new ones, I love Odyssey lands / mirage lands / urza lands / tempest lands / 7th lands, anyway..all lands back from 7th edition.
I have a box full of basic lands, I think my favorite ones are from Ice Age, those forest arts are really beautiful, with snow and sunsets..truly amazing
Edit: I would love to get my hands on some foi basic lands from urza's saga, they are beautiful but so expensive :/ Do you guys have some of them?
For the longest time I hated the modern frames, but I've come to embrace them. I still love the old border cards the best though as it's what I grew up with.
As for 'pimp' cards, foils and foreign just don't do it for me. Cost being the biggest factor. I usually select cards based on the first printing or black border if possible. For example all my Strip Mines are Antiquities instead of 4E.
they are harder to find then expensive here,
arena's mountain are likely iun the range of 3€, in the range of unghined lands. (PS, I love unghined lands, the full and squared artwork really gives much much much art to look at)
Agree, but I prefer Unglued ones, the drawning style is awesome, but unhinged are amazing.
I go for Japanese Foil when possible (rises in value exponentially compared to their non foil/foil counterparts and rarely falls from any price it reaches) if the card is widely played and will be widely played for years to come (think Jace TMS, Liliana of the Veil, Abrupt Decay, Deathrite Shaman, Snapcaster etc). I think alot of people have it right that foils hold their value much better, because there is always a market for people pimping out decks.
I also use unglued lands or Foil Chinese Zen lands for all my decks.
i dont do the foil decks, and i trade foils nearly as fast as i seam to aquire them. yes i have some vanity while playing certain things, i dug up some beta disintigrate's to throw in red when they were time shifted. all my lands are usually same picture full art zendikar basics (a bit ocd about it really) and black border is a must. thats about my extent of pimpin my cards.

It's not the fall that hurts, it's the sudden stop at the bottom.
the red mage lives by the variance and dies by the variance. May the variance be with you, always.
If its something simple like getting the picture I like with little to no cost difference then sure but other then that I will only pimp when I have nothing better to waste my money on but until I can play every deck I want to at 100% I just cant justify spending money on it when I could be making the deck stronger. AKA Im better off with 40 revised duals then a playset of beta underground seas.
I have preferred art for many cards, e.g. Brainstorm from Mercadian Masques instead of Ice Age, so I'll splurge within reason.
With classic cards like Lightning Bolt, Dark Ritual, Counterspell, and Swords to Plowshares, I really prefer the original art because of the deep associations they trigger when you draw them or slam them on the table. Maybe that's just me. Anyway, these cards are expensive in Alpha & Beta so that's how I got into FBB.
