This is my Azorius Aggro/Control deck featuring the mighty Ascended Lawmage as the Commander.
This deck is suited for both Multiplayer and 1v1 Pauper EDH games.
It's fairly quick, effective, well balanced, and generates a good amount of value/card advantage.
*Please note that this is not a Voltron rush deck, it's meant to be ran as a tempo based mid-range
aggro/control deck, where the Ascended Lawmage is being utilized as your prime finisher.
Why Ascended Lawmage:
The Ascended Lawmage is the go-to Commander for Azorius Aggro/Control in Pauper EDH. With both
flying and hexproof she is very difficult for opponents to deal with. With just a single aura and/or some
equipment she becomes a very effective threat and often kills with Commander damage.
Ascended Lawmage The Commander, flying and hexproof, very receptive to aura/equipment buffs. Custodi Squire The pauper Eternal Witness on an evasive 3/3 body, excellent card at common rarity.
* Please note that voting starts with you then goes in turn order thereafter, and that you win all ties.
* Also note that in 1v1 you will always get back what you voted for. Mulldrifter A Divination on an evasive 2/2, one of the best blue creatures in the game. Mnemonic Wall: Instant/sorcery recursion, gets back the good stuff. Guardian of the Guildpact The pauper True-Name Nemesis, good on defense and wields equipment
like a god. Versus a mono colored opponent the Guardian is nigh impossible to get rid of. Coalition Honor Guard The pauper Spellskite, this card just gives people ***** fits.
The Honor Guard impedes all opposing aura's, combat tricks and removal, keeping your board safe. Stonehorn Dignitary Shuts down an opponents combat phase, lets you attack without retaliation.
* This card is very receptive to bounce/blink, allowing for multiple re-uses of its combat negation ability. Archaeomancer Pauper Snapcaster Mage equivalent, important role in this deck. Trusty Retriever Part Auramancer, part Trusty Packbeast, outstanding value in the form of recursion. Mist RavenUnsummon on a 2/2 flyer, best common creature out of Avacyn Restored. Heliod's Pilgrim Aura tutor, gets both offensive and defensive auras. Ironclad Slayer The pauper Restoration Specialist for auras/equipment, important card. Sea Gate Oracle A Sleight of Hand on a 1/3, great early defense. Court Hussar An ETB speed Anticipate with Vigilance and good early defense, reuse with bounce. Trinket Mage Helpful at any stage of the game for numerous situations. Auramancer Enchantment recursion on a 2/2 body, very important role in this deck. Man-o'-War 2/2 Unsummon, once touted as the best creature in the game back in the day, still good. Frost Lynx A blue Kor Hookmaster. An excellent tempo/control card, reuse with blink/bounce. Whitemane Lion A pauper Restoration Angel equivalent that uses bounce instead of blink. Deputy of Acquittals A pauper Restoration Angel equivalent that uses bounce instead of blink. Dream Stalker A non targeting Rescue on a defensive 1/5 body, reuse your permanents. Kor Skyfisher A non targeting Rescue on an evasive 2/3 body, reuse your permanents.
BoneSplitter Pauper sword equivalent, high efficiency damage boost. Vulshok Morningstar Pauper sword equivalent, high efficiency damage/toughness boost. Ethereal Armor High efficiency stat boost with First Strike that scales up. Hyena Umbra High efficiency stat boost with First Strike, totem armor helps the Lawmage. Cartouche of Solidarity High efficiency stat boost with First Strike and a Token Soldier for a single W mana. Steel of the Godhead The best Azorius aura buff in the game, unblockable with lifelink and stat boosts.
Negate 2 mana, basic and efficient, stops problem spells. Mana Leak The classic "Tax Counter", cheap, efficient, and effective. The best of its kind. Counterspell 2 mana basic and efficient hard counter, simply the best. Essence Scatter High efficiency 2 mana creature counter, always relevant in pauper edh. Dawn Charm Counters a spell that targets you. This outstanding card will save you many times.
Ghostly Flicker: One of the absolute best Blink cards ever printed, has a variety of uses for many situations. Momentary Blink Reuse your ETB creatures abilities, with flashback, simply the best single target blink card. Ephemerate A Cloudshift with Rebound, as with all blink effects it's benefits/uses are numerous. Aether Spellbomb Searchable with Trinket Mage, creature bounce that forces your opponent to play around it. Echoing Truth Versatile bounce/token sweeper, one of the best bounce cards ever printed. Into the Roil Outstanding and useful bounce card that cantrips on the kicker. Mist Raven An excellent offensive/defensive tempo creature. Man-o'-War An excellent offensive/defensive tempo creature. Deputy of Acquittals Instant speed, save a blocker, thwart removal/targeting, or reuse a creatures ETB ability. Whitemane Lion Instant speed, save a blocker, thwart removal/targeting, or reuse a creatures ETB ability. Kor Skyfisher Allows you to reuse a permanents ETB ability or bounce and recast an aura/enchantment. Dream Stalker Allows you to reuse a permanents ETB ability or bounce and recast an aura/enchantment.

Swap in any of these if either more Aggro, Control, or Utility is desired.
This deck plays in a mid-range Azorius aggro/control style akin to Geist of Saint Traft/Brago, King Eternal.
It grinds well, has a fine balance between offense/defense, and usually kills with Commander damage.
This deck has many control/disruption elements, a good amount of card drawing/filtering, and some solid
recursion ability that allows you to keep the game moving forward to victory.
The deck runs a lot of value creatures and has the means to reuse their abilities via bounce and blink,
allowing you to in most cases generate superior card advantage over your opponent(s).
The deck is there to keep you alive until the time is right for the Lawmage to enter play and do her work.
Once the Lawmage enters play, use your removal, bounce, and counters to keep her path clear of blockers.
Once again as stated in the introduction, this is not a Voltron rush deck, it's meant to be ran as a tempo based
mid-range aggro/control deck, where the Ascended Lawmage is being utilized as your prime finisher.
Deck History:
I've been running this deck for about 4 years now. I chose the Ascended Lawmage because she's unique in the
format of Pauper EDH, there's just nothing else like her. A flying hexproof Commander is almost unfair, and
I do get a lot of eyerolls from my playgroup whenever I pull her out to play, but it is what it is.
When I first created this deck, I did what everyone else does and made it Full-on Voltron (don't fall into that
trap with her), which was ok in 1v1 games, but obviously performed poorly in multiplayer.
So over time I've come to appreciate that the Lawmage is way more effective with a well balanced mid-range
deck that doesn't just try to rush in as fast as it can by turn 3 with all manner of janky auras and sub-par
equipment's, that is folly.
In the format of Pauper EDH the Lawmage actually only needs minimal buffs from a single good aura and/or
a single piece of good equipment to be effective.
The deck is there to keep you alive and to clear and maintain a path for her, so just wait for a good opening
in the game (could be turn 3... or it could be turn 10.....), then bring her out, and she'll do the rest.
Personal Bio:
I've been playing both competative and casual Mtg for over 23 years now. I presently play with a fairly
large and extensive playgroup out of Brothers Grim Games in Selden, NY, and sometimes at Campus
Cards & Games and Coolstuff Games both in FL when visiting family.
In writing this primer my goal is to not only put forth knowledge, it is to also inspire thought
and creativity in other players as well.
Great primer! Your last primer got me started again in this format. I also have a ascended lawmage deck. It is a bit more on the voltron side than yours and it can draw quite a lot of cards. Ocular halo is a sweet card on lawmage also it keeps you protected while attacking.
Do you know pdhhomebase? It's a newer website on pauper commander.
Do you mind if I link you primers (horror and lawmage) on reddit?

Thanks Korhal! Inspiration is a good thing. Voltron Lawmage is really good in 1v1 (one of the best).
Some solid additions to the deck from Modern Horizons:
Soul-Strike Technique: Excellent new Aura for the Lawmage, 2 mana for a stat buff, vigilance, and a manifest
in the rare case that the Lawmage should die. Replaces the underperforming Darksteel Axe.
In order to get the Manifest token, you would need to let your commander go to the graveyard. Vigilance is certainly great, though!
Have you thought about using phasing to protect your commander from removal or remove blockers? Vanishing seems like it would be pretty good. Maybe Reality Ripple, too.
I used to run Vanishing in here in the beginning, it's really good, although I've found the Lawmage's inherent Hexproof
is more than enough protection on its own. This deck always gets pressured hard in multiplayer and is to a point
where all mana is being used up every turn and often that double blue is difficult to keep open all the time.
Yeah, the Manifest on Soul-Strike Technique will happen rarely if ever when it's enchanting the Lawmage,
I just like the cheap stat buff and vigilance it gives her, it's just what the Grand Arbiter ordered LOL!
Thanks for the input! Sucks this site is going down next month...
*BTW have you seen Soulherder, card is bonkers and would make a good PDH commander to build around.
Queen of Ice Truly outstanding tempo/control orientedAdventure/Wizard. Synergizes very well with the
bounce effects ran in this deck for reuse of her Rage of WinterAdventure.

Azorius in general has a very strong game in Pauper EDH whether your running the Ascended Lawmage,
Mistmeadow Witch, Azorius Guildmage, Reflector Mage, Cloudblazer, Elite Guardmage, or the new
King of Blink the Soulherder.
You just can't go wrong with any of these Commanders, they do it all.
But none of them can close out games like the Lawmage though...
Pauper EDH plays exactly the same as Regular EDH except:
- 1 Uncommon General (does not have to be a legendary creature)
- 99 Commons (any card that was printed as a common at any point in Mtg history is legal)
- 30 Starting Life
- 18 General Damage
