This topic is for building and discussing decklists built around Marisi, Breaker of the Coil. Why Marisi? For me, a couple reasons:
He's the game's first RGW Cat legend, though that isn't the focus of the particular decklist I've built below.
His ability to goad your opponents' creatures invites some chaotic fun. All it takes is for one creature to hit each of your opponents, then you can sit back and have some popcorn as your opponents try to destroy one another. This is the focus of the decklist below.
So, what kinds of cards does a Marisi deck want?
For starters, he wants abilities that help get damage through. Flying, Menace, Trample, you name it. Being able to stop creatures from blocking is also highly useful. Odric, Master Tactician is easily the most backbreaking card in this entire decklist; if his ability triggers, your creatures can swing unblocked again and again. Sunforger can fetch useful spells like Gruul Charm, Naya Charm, and the ever-popular Master Warcraft. Mirri, Weatherlight Duelist and Nacatl War-Pride can make your other creatures effectively unblockable most of the time.
Numbers also help. If you have more creatures attacking an opponent than that player has to block, you're guaranteed to get some damage through. Token makers are thus also highly useful. Brimaz, King of Oreskos, Hero of Bladehold, Captain's Claws, and Sigiled Sword of Valeron all create tokens that enter attacking. The Myriad ability is of particular interest, as a creature with Myriad can essentially attack every opponent at once. Blade of Selves grants Myriad to whatever creature is equipped with it.
Removal might be useful, for artifacts and enchantments in particular. You don't want to be too aggressive with creature removal as the whole point of a Marisi deck is to goad your opponents' creatures. That said, one or two wrath effects might be a good safety stopper just in case the game starts going bad for you. Cataclysmic Gearhulk and Tragic Arrogance leave one creature behind, allowing you to continue goading your opponents' creatures. Fight to the Death can be a mean trick to pull on your goaded opponents, and you can even fetch it with Sunforger.
Card draw is always useful, and in a Marisi deck your main sources of card draw will be artifacts or green cards. Since Marisi is a power 5 creature, Drumhunter seems like an apt choice. My decklist also has plenty of power 3+ creatures for Elemental Bond, and Overwhelming Instinct takes advantage of the deck's core strategy.
Ramp is also always useful, and again your main sources of ramp will be artifacts or green cards. The usual Sol Ring is present, and especially useful here as many of this list's cards cost 3 mana. Sword of the Animist is perhaps the best form of ramp an aggro deck can ask for. Exploration allows you to play an additional land every turn.
MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
I'm currently building Marisi too. What i did differently was that i made my curve lower, as you'd want to land 1 or 2 creatures that are very difficult to block by Turn 4, when you cast Marisi. In the same note, i avoided 4 drops unless they are very synergistic for the deck. The 2 i end up using were Odric, Master Tactician (as you mentioned) and Loyal Unicorn.
Like we were discussing on the Let's Brew thread: I have hatebears and ways of granting evasions (Swords, and the recently added Sidar Kondo of Jamuraa)
