I've had the image of a deck that functions by playing "out of other players' decks", and uses their own spells/threats against them. I chose Sen Triplets for that Commander, as their abilities kind of line up perfectly with what the deck wants to do. I had a couple of games last night, and I was rather happy with both the sort of thing it was doing and the table's reactions to it (the groans were more "I can't believe that happened" than "ugh, this ridiculous thing again"). That said, there's definitely room for improvement, and I'd like some opinions on cuts and cards that can fit the theme that I've missed.
I'll start with the list itself, and give my post-game thoughts below.
Commentary:
LANDS: Nothing too special. Thespian's Stage for copy reasons. Cascading Cataracts for commander reasons. Isolated Chapel should probably be in here, as well as Arcane Sanctum and maybe the other Temples. Also, Exotic Orchard. My LGS didn't have the other Temples and I forgot about the other 2. Maybe next time?
SORCERIES:
I'm in good colors for wraths, so I packed a bunch (Decree, Rout, Zenith, Day, and *** itself). I'm thinking about Merciless Eviction as potentially one-sided wipe too. The others are for theft reasons. Beacon is repeatable (technically, though unlikely), Stolen Goods and Telemin Performance are pet cards and are randomly hilarious. Praetor's Grasp is a reverse tutor (or pre-emptive combo removal if suspected). Kind of iffy on Stolen Identity and Psychic Intrusion (Identity costs a little much, but the potential gain seems nuts, and Intrusion seems a little costy as a spell at 5 but provides a wide range of targets [opposite of Gonti, who has limited range, but costs less and leaves a decent body]). I have yet to cast either, so I'll reserve judgment until then.
ENCHANTMENTS:
This is a weird section. Psychic Surgery I had lying around and realized it can be hilarious tech against decks that search too much (not to mention invalidating top-of-deck tutors). Leyline I also had lying around not being used and it's there for... giving Clones flash, I guess? Did not draw it yet, so don't know if it actually impacts my game much. As for the creature steal, Take Possession was chosen for the split second, and while I was typing up the list I remembered that Control Magic is an uncommon, so there's really no reason why Ransom should be in here.
CREATURES:
I feel like this is going to be a split between "great choice" and "why are you doing this?"
I had a bunch of these UW blink cards lying around, and figured HEY if I'm stealing things let's blink them too! Except a lot of them end up returning under owner's control, and that is absolutely unacceptable. That said though, some of my own things have decent ETBs and I don't mind blinking them in and out, so maybe some can stay? I think Brago's going to be cut since I'm not guaranteed to have blink targets and he needs to connect, where Galepowder Mage can remove blockers and vaporize tokens and Deadeye is... well, Deadeye (and he blinks things back under my control). The blue and black Primordials are hilarious, but I'm mildly skeptical on the white one. Bloodgift Demon I had lying around, but I feel like he should be a faster source of draw here. I've yet to draw some of the weirder creatures (Dimir Doppelganger, Cytoplast Manipulator, Daxos of Meletis) so I don't want to comment on them yet. Geth and Thief of Sanity were absolutely fantastic. Clones are clones, but I'm thinking of cutting Quicksilver Gargantuan - there are cheaper/better clone effects and becoming a 7/7 isn't always relevant, so I think I'd rather drop my curve (whether with another clone or a mana source).
INSTANTS:
Notable mentions include Insidious Will and Desertion as on-theme counters, Vanish Into Memory as part-blink, part-removal, part-draw spell, and Debt of Loyalty which seems hilariously unexpected (and which I have yet to draw).
ARTIFACTS:
Mana rocks are mana rocks. Do you think there's room for Gilded Lotus? I feel like I should, but... that's one BIG mana rock (mana-wise). Otherwise, Conjurer's Closet was intended as part of the blink package but works since it blinks things back to me, Mimic Vat is mildly on-theme and has pet-card status, but it's not something I won't let go of (maybe not at first, but I can be convinced to see the light). Crystal Shard I had lying around and is part-blink, part-"tapped out? Get outta here". Boots are more of a "why not" and Bauble because ... the LGS ran out of Fellwar Stones (that weren't 4th Edition for $25).
VENSER:
Completes the blink package (even though only blinks things I own and doesn't give them back right away) but can be forgiven since he also clears the way for players to die.
NEXT STEPS:
I have a pile of things I'd like to include because they seem a whole lotta fun: from Hedonist's Trove to what seems to be efficient and on-theme Kheru Mind-eater. I'm also trying to run a lower land count than I'm used to (34 instead of 37-38) but with more mana rocks, so depending on how that goes, I might want to spend the first couple of cuts on upping the lands back.
I found it to be rather fun, where a good chunk of the things I do are directly dependent on the opposing decks.
What do y'all think? Am I going too far on theme and some things are so bad a land would be better in its place? Is the blink package completely unnecessary and I should just focus on more stealing?
