So the theme of this deck is deep sea exploration/archaeology. The crowning goal is to find Arixmethes. That is why he isn't the Commander, because Thrasios is exploring the deep, encountering various sea creatures and legendary locations on the way to the end-goal of discovering the greatest sunken city of all.
I tried to make this an even trade between funcitonality while staying true to the theme. So sure, cards like Clinging Aneomones should be Elvish Piper for example. But I really wanted to represent as many different sea creatures as possible. To capture the exploration element, I included many unique lands, which work great with Realms Uncharted, that is thematic. I may drop this card and many of the ETB tapped lands for Islands, but not sure yet.
The most difficult part of this deck was having to cut the following cards, which I am considering re-adding (especially Exploration):
Dizzy Spell can search many of the one-drops, specifically Quest for Ula's Temple or Training Grounds. The latter is strictly to augment Thrasios. They're not on theme, but add a lot more consistency to the deck. This is tied with my Jace and Theros themed Enchantment deck as my favorite deck.
And the moment we've all been waiting for, at long last, ARIXMETHES!
I couldn't resist the urge to get multiple landfall triggers, another cool land, and mana fixing from one of my favorite Fetchlands. While Transmuting Dizzy Spell for Quest or Training Grounds is lovely, I really wanted 35 lands in this deck. I didn't want to cut a thematic card either.
After testing this deck, I may choose to drop Realms Uncharted (I dislike my lands going to grave) and may consider replacing it with either Dizzy Spell or Time of Need.
I am looking to drop a creature for Kydele. Creatures are the toughest cuts from this deck for me, since I love them all
Awesome flavor, it's palpable. Thank you for this deck.
Thank you! In spite of how heavy on the theme it is, the deck is surprisingly functional. I think it's all the scry and ramp it has. I can't believe I am finally playing with Arixmethes. I still can't wrap my mind around it finally happening!
Does anyone have experience with Kederekt Leviathan? I never seem to want to cast this guy, since I commit a lot to the board. But he seems solid though. I've been wanting to try Nimbus Swimmer and Simic Sky Swallower, but they're technically sky leviathans. Still, Flying is important to have... IDK!
If you're worried about lands in the graveyard just use Splendid Reclamation or World Shaper - both are technically on theme; World Shaper is a river herald (merfolk - which is on theme) from Ixalan (which are all about rivers and jungles and exploring) and Splendid Reclamation is on theme (how many times have you heard the expression "reclaimed by the sea"?). It would be useful to consider those options since land destruction is a thing in commander - whether targeted or en mass.
I like the flavor. I think you could wedge in Kydele, Chosen of Kruphix on the notion of knowledge coming from exploring. Your partners would basically be exploration and knowledge. Also, both are legends from Theros. I would also include all three leviathans. Resetting the board is a powerful strategy in commander. You may fill the board but compare it to a monoR goblins deck or a GW tokens deck. The sky leviathans are just that: leviathans. Leviathans are chocked full of flavor so I say go for it. Having a huge blocker/threat in the sky is no joke.

I was thinking about Ramunap Excavator - due to the excavation element. It definitely feels on theme and overcomes Realms Uncharted downside. I just wonder what I would drop for this card? And is Realms worth running both for? Part of me feels yes, it may be.
I agree on Kydele. I really do need to fit her in somehow. She's helpful AND on theme.
I do indeed need some flying presence. Nimbus Swimmer and Simic Sky Swallower are great options. It's driving me crazy to make cuts for those cards though. I'm at 29 creatures + Thrasios so far, so I don't know if cutting non-creatures for even more creatures is a good idea. If I add Kydele, Nimbus and Simic Sky, I'll have 32 + Thrasios, which is a lot.
I'm surprised that Spiny Starfish, Wall of Kelp, and Giant Whale were given even less consideration than Giant Octopus (this first two buy time while you ramp and the last works well with high tide)
You usually see all three of those cards in thematic sea decks like this.

Giant Octopus is in the list of cards I am trying to fit into the deck, actually. It's in the spoiler tags in the first post. The reason it isn't already in the deck is because it is impossible to get a black border one in the new frame (been searching relentlessly for a 9th edition foil, the only way to get it that way) so I cut it out for Octopus Umbra. I do want to fit it back in.
I chose to play Sigiled Starfish over Spiny Starfish. With limited room, I had to choose only one copy of certain creature types to represent. Sigiled Starfish is from Theros, and has Scry, which is amazing in this deck, as well as being in the new border. I would really like to play both though, honestly.
I don't really like Whale cards for some reason.
You know, I almost bought a Wall of Kelp back in the day for 10 cents, but passed because of room issues. It's like 10 dollars now lol And I still don't have room, even if I had one! There are so many cards I wish I could play. I am considering this:
Training Grounds -> Exploration (lose some consistency with Thrasios, but be more on theme)
And I really want to play Kydele, Giant Octopus, Nimbus Swimmer and Simic Sky Swallower
I could drop Gelatinous Genesis, Realms Uncharted and Summoning Trap for creatures... but that's really killing the theme and it also makes for an overload of creatures. It's driving me crazy trying to find room.
I was questioning why you see Giant Octopus (a vanilla 3/3 for 4) as being seen as actively better than one of the other, equally flavorful sea creature spells that actually have useful effects. As far as gameplay is concerned, having kelp or an additional starfish appears to have equal flavor and greater utility than something like Coral Barrier, Griptide, or Giant Octopus (at least from where I am standing).
Am I missing some level of flavor here? Are you just after the quote from 20,000 leagues under the sea? If so, you are going deep on that flavor (pun intended).

Right, I see now. You're correct, it's the Jules Verne quote, and the fact it is an Octopus, which survives Whelming Wave, Slinn Voda, and synergy with Quest. But I don't have it in the deck because I had to make cuts, and cut it for being the only white-border card in the deck. Gotta make cuts somewhere. Kelp is also found in shallow sunlit waters, so it's not as mysterious as deep ocean coral reefs. Coral Barrier is great for being a 2-for-1 and flipping Growing Rites of Itlimoc. I considered dropping it since I play Coral Atoll to represent corals, but it makes a Squid token as well, and I need to represent my squids too.
I'd really like to make room for: Exploration, Explorer's Scope, Kydele, Nimbus Swimmer and Simic Sky Swallower
I cut the last two for being sky leviathans, Kydele for Clinging Anemones (ugh), Exploration for Training Grounds (not on theme though, although works wonders for Thrasios) and Explorer's Scope for Octopus Umbra
If I could ask one last question, why Gelatinous Genesis? It doesn't show water, isn't related to sea or travel, and its flavor text refers to eldrazi of all things. I could call it a concession to mechanical strength but there are much better X-spell cards that could've done the same thing in that situation.
Is this meant to represent the sort of danger that results from breaking into the wrong tomb?
Is this supposed to somehow represent sea foam (real stretch here)?

Gelatinous Genesis was intended to represent deep-sea bacterial mats or biolfilms near hydrothermal vents. However, in testing tonight, the card proved frustratingly ineffective, for minimal contribution to theme, as you point out. So I am dropping it. I'm between Exploration and Kydele, Chosen of Kruphix. Since I actually have Kydele, I think I'll go with her for now, and eventually if I get an Exploration, I'll see what I can do about fitting it in.
Archaeomancer can't be dropped. It's an archaeologist that sets up the Whelming Wave loop. Function and flavor. The reason I didn't consider Path of Discovery or Enter the Unknown is it gets really exhausting in EDH to keep up with counters, so I like to limit their use to things like Expeditions, PWs and of course, Arixmethes. Those are, however, very thematic suggestions that I will consider, if I can find the room at a later point, depending on testing.
I used to play Veteran Explorer back when I played Kruphix. It's very on-theme, but I cut it to make room, justifying it by the fact he assists opponents which I didn't like as much. He's still a card that I consider from time to time.
And I'll need to think about Exploration. Primal Command is Zendikar themed and tutors Arixmethes, so I tolerate it, and Nature's Spiral has snail shells in the art, referencing biology, while also recovering Arixmethes and Kioras if they go to grave. I also love that Primal can shuffle my grave into my library, so I can recycle many of my thematic cards.
I am thinking of dropping some other less powerful cards, such as the Fonts, or some of the lesser creatures, but I do want to preserve the art theme of the deck for now. I am seriously considering dropping many of the ETB tapped lands for Islands instead, and dropping Realms Uncharted in general for Cultivate. I may strictly focus on the big creatures and Island matters theme.
Cards I would love to find room for are Ramunap Excavator and Azusa, Lost but Seeking.
Just came to check out your deck... I like it! Strong theme and flavor here. People keep raving about that Oathbreaker format... I was going to make a sea-themed deck with Kiora at the helm.

Thank you! I just posted the updated deck list now. You can also see it visually in the TappedOut link. I have heard good things about Oathbreaker, although the format personally doesn't appeal to me (having fewer cards). Which Kiora will you use? The Theros version? That would be my choice.
Does everything in the deck need to be 100% sea-themed?
Because this is the type of deck that could actually run cards like Unexpected Results and Mind’s Desire to decent effect.
While neither is specifically aquatic, the themes are general enough to fit in your deck with a bit of handwaving.

Yes.
However, I might be able to try Unexpected Results (which is a great idea) as a "researching the ocean" theme. I have a card in the sideboard called "Research the Deep" as well for this, so it could work. Plus it's a fun card to get a big sea monster from.
I used to play Defense of the Heart. I am hoping for a reprint of the judge promo as a non-foil to include again.
-1 Altar of the Pantheon
-1 Nyx Lotus
-1 Stormtide Leviathan
+1 Brinelin, the Moon Kraken

I will be making an attempt to re-add Nyx Lotus to this deck, since I do love the card. But I had to choose between it and Stinging Lionfish, and while I have other decks that play Nyx Lotus, I only have one that thematically cares about the fish, so some difficult decisions were made, for now.
I tried to make this an even trade between funcitonality while staying true to the theme. So sure, cards like Clinging Aneomones should be Elvish Piper for example. If it is one of those options, something like Exploration would really be a lot more transparent in theme to most viewers. Likewise, you could probably push the theme further by replacing cards like Archaeomancer, Nature's Spiral, Primal Command, and Summoning Trap with cards like Path of Discovery, Enter the Unknown, Tempt With Discovery, Journey of Discovery, and Veteran Explorer.
Go all the way! Embrace the flavor!
Archaeomancer can't be dropped. It's an archaeologist that sets up the Whelming Wave loop. Function and flavor.
