I bring to you my Neheb the Eternal commander deck for your critique and consideration.
Brief history: The deck began focused on spellslinging, using cheap spells like acidic soil and flame rift to generate lots of mana, and then play damage doublers like furnace of rath or spell doublers like fire servant to play large x spells and knock out two or three opponents at a time. While that was fun, the deck felt inconsistent. I would often just play a mana rock before turn 4 or 5, leaving myself very open and having little interaction. Also, because Neheb generates a lot of hate, people would deal with him early on and I couldn't close out games.
Current focus: The current deck aims at curving out better and having more interactions/answers, especially without Neheb on the battlefield. With this in mind, I have included big read beaters, haste enablers, creatures with good mana sinks, multiple combat options, and equipment to upgrade some of the smaller creatures. I will soon update this post by categorizing the function of each card. For now, here's the deck.
Please let me know what you think! I am specifically interested in which, if any, pieces of equipment are best to run. The biggest upgrade would most likely be a Sword of Feast and Famine. I also worry that I have too few ways to deal with graveyards and am considering Grafdigger’s Cage. On that note, Price of Glory has paid huge dividends and I am considering more hate cards. I think upgrading to Blood Moon would be the first step and then add in Stranglehold to stop tutors, War’s Toll to slow people down, and Ruination for non basic hate. Thanks for stopping by!
Price of glory is such a nice choice, I'll have to add that to mine. Mine is very centered around generating lots of excess mana, so a different strategy than yours, but I'm glad to see people giving Neheb attention. He's a cool dude and deserves it.
May I ask, have you considered:
- By Force to deal with artifacts easily in a pretty dominating way
- Demonfire as a second sort-of-Banefire, with the possibility of being uncounterable
- Berserkers' Onslaught for Double Strike on top of Gratuitous violence maybe? Idk how often you need the extra damage, but in case you do not always draw Gratuitous, or just to hit even harder
- Dictate of the Twin Gods to either replace Gratuitous for mana cost reasons (though that shouldn't matter in mono red), for flash, or just alongside Gratuitous for more chance to draw
