“There comes a stage at which a man would rather die cleanly by a bullet
than by the unknown terror of the phantom in the forest.”
― Tahir Shah, House of the Tiger King: The Quest for a Lost City
Hello everyone,
after years of passively perusing this forum, I decided to create an account and start things off with sharing my most recent deck: Tamanoa. I know she is not technically legal, but my playgroup is fine with her. Honestly, she has all the makings of a legendary creature: a unique name and feel and a wonderful build-around ability. Pretty sure she would be legendary if she were printed today. I mean, she is part of a cycle with 3 other legendary creatures, so bear with me here. ;-)
The deck started out as a Gishath, Sun's Avatar dinosaur build with a focus on enrage. I threw in some other enrage-y creatures like Phytohydra and Boros Reckoner, and realized pretty soon that I didn't want a lot of the beatstick/tribal dinos but instead more Pyrohemia type effects. Since a lot of the damage sources are noncreature spells, Tamanoa was a perfect fit. Also, she looks like a guardian spirit of Orazca, so to me it even felt great flavor-wise.
My goal was for my opponents to feel like they are venturing into a hostile wild jungle. Everything is hot and humid, and all around you the forest keeps growing. Every time you strike at the vines or try to kill the animals, they only seem to grow faster. The deeper you go, the harder it is to keep track of directions. Every inch of ground has to be earned with sweat and pain, and little by little you grow tired, while all around you the jungle keeps growing, and the predators are watching you from the dark places between the trees, biding their time, waiting for the kill until you are weak and finally lose your will to fight.
The deck doesn't really want to attack, but instead set up a board with Tamanoa and some creatures that want to be dealt damage. Add one of the various indestructibility effects (Vigor counts, Rite of Passage has a comparable effect with Pyrohemia), and start dishing out some global burn while gaining tons of life in the process. Pyrohemia is an all star, and Earthquake and co. can do some heavy lifting as well. Star of Extinction with Repercussion is usually game-over, and Boros Reckoner or Spitemare can do some major damage as well. The deck often wins by reducing my enemies' life totals with Overabundance or Manabarbs, getting in for a bit of damage with my creatures every now and then, and finish things off with a big Hurricane or Repercussion.
There are a couple of (somewhat) infinite combos. Usually I try to avoid such combos, but in this case I just really really wanted to play the individual cards. They don't happen often, as I don't have tutors in the deck (except Forerunner of the Empire) and most of the combos need at least three to four cards to go really crazy. For instance, Pyrohemia and Rite of Passage will kill the board and grow my dudes very large. Rite of Passage has a similar effect with Forerunner of the Empire and Polyraptor. I realize I could always get Polyraptor with Forerunner of the Empire, but I usually don't because I have no haste enablers and, while it is pretty sweet to immediately get 8 Polyraptors, the likelihood of a Wrath before my next turn is just too high. Another combo is Pariah + Coalhauler Swine + Indestructibility. Pariah effects and indestructibility are a synergy I enjoy in general, and with Boros Reckoner or some enrage dino they are really sweet. Also, they don't win the game on the spot, which I consider a plus.
Tamanoa is really fun and can build some really sweet synergies. It has definitely become one of my favorite decks to play.
I am more than happy to hear some suggestions and feedback!

The fight cards just don't do enough here. While the deck runs some large creatures, they are neither super large nor show up reliably enough for the fight cards to pull their weight as consistent removal. A friend of mine had Primal Order in his pile of junk rares that he brought with him tonight, so this was an easy decision. Looking forward to some very nice, very lethal Primal Order and Tamanoa duets. The Gruul Ragebeast can stay for now, as it brings its own big body with it.

For some early game triggers on dinos, I like Fire Ants.
It's nice to have something that can be in play before you play a dino, so when you play one you can trigger it immediately.
By the way, you may want a sac outlet like High Market in case you want to play Polyraptor with Aether Flash in play.
Otherwise the triggers will make a draw game. With something to break the loop you could end up with something like a million dinos, though, which is nice.

Very good point on the sac outlet, thanks! I was aware of the possible mandatory loops, but resigned myself to not being able to play the Polyraptor when I have Aether Flash or something similar in play. A sac outlet is a better safety switch though, and also helps against pesky blue mages with their control magic.
I had considered Fire Ants, Hornet Nest etc, but my reasoning for not including them was that I have plenty of boardwipes and recurring global damage effects and felt that my tokens will often die before I can make use of them. Do you have experiences with playing these cards in similar builds?
Edit: haha oh sorry, I was thinking of Saber Ants! Fire Ants are indeed a very nice suggestion that I will consider! Good find, thanks!
Edit 2: Do you have experiences with Fire Ants? I could see them being a little low on actual impact since I can usually only activate them once. I found this deck takes a while until it has a significant number of dinos out, and Boros Reckoner and co usually want to be dealt more than just 1 damage.

Oh man, it took me until now to realize Fire Ants only deals damage to other creatures. I always thought it was worded like Krark-Clan Shaman. Reading is not my forte today apparently. In this case I will definitely test them! They even fit the Jungle theme, being carnivorous ants and all...

I fear I will have to bite the bullet and order another Rishkar's Expertise (my only copy rn is in Gahiji). I am not sure how great Collective Unconscious and Masked Admirers will be in this deck, as I find I often only have two to three creatures on the board for some reason. Sylvan Library would probably be the best option, but right now I need my single copy in my Anafenza Enchantress deck. I guess this is a great example of an actual drawback of my policy of not wanting to put multiple copies of the same staple card in all kinds of different decks. I will see if I get my hands on a Enchantress's Presence soon to free up my Sylvan Library.
I did think about wheels effects, but decided against them for this build. I generally want to hold whatever cards I have in my hand. One wheel card I am considering is Knollspine Dragon, but I still don't know the deck well enough to be certain I will consistently be able to deal damage to my opponents whenever I need to.

Hunter's Insight - Low cost and I love the art. Instant speed let's it be cast after blockers are declared. Mask of Memory - This seems to have gained popularity again in the last couple of years. 2 cost, 1 to equip and lets you dig two cards every turn. Hunter's Prowess - A giant growth (plus trample) with Hunter's Insight's effect.
Chandra flamecaller? Doubles as enrage trigger in addition to personal wheel.
Thanks a ton, these are actually some really nice suggestions! I did not include Momentous Fall et al. because I don't want to be dependent on having high power creatures on the board, and I usually want to keep my dudes around and not sac them.
Keen Sense and Snake Umbra are actually really cool. I knew about them but dismissed them because I though they only triggered on combat damage. Just now I noticed it's actually any damage, which makes them really nice with Boros Reckoner and Stuffy Doll etc. I might also try Chandra Flamecaller. As you said, she nicely doubles as enrage trigger.

Needed the Angel and Burning Earth for another deck. Archangel of Thune actually didn't do much in the deck anyways, since I have plenty of other ways of boosting my creatures and don't actually care that much about +1/+1 counters anyways. Acidic Soil is just regular old mana-efficient burn/lifegain. Citatdel of Pain I might take out again in the future, but I did manage to get it on board together with Manabarbs already, which was great.

I removed Cacophodon due to complaints from my playgroup about it comboing off too much. Also took out some Dinosaurs and Dino matters cards such as Temple Altisaur because they were more cute than anything else, and replaced them with some more noncreature damage sources. The other changes are mostly streamlining the deck.

Unfortunately I think the green draw spells are your best bet, like Rishkar's Expertise, Collective Unconscious, maybe Masked Admirers, and of course Sylvan Library. In red you have wheels, like Wheel of Fortune, but I don't know if that's too much of a risk for your deck.
