I found that too often I would get caught up in trying to conserve Guildgates from discard due to the possibility of a Maze's End win. I know that sort of thing makes me make stupid decisions, so I've cut the Guildgates in favour of Temples whose Scry should smooth over this deck's roughness. Exotic Orchard should help with casting things on a better curve than the random ETBT nature of the deck. Right now I'm toying with the idea of using the Planeshift Lairs just to eliminate more ETBT Lands.
I asked a group of buddies over which are the least intimidating fatties in the deck, and they pointed out a few. Meglonoth and Tariel get axed this round. A current problem with the deck is dying because I would lose too much life in the early game from random beats, so I've added two Creatures should help me in the life department. Kokusho's price bottomed out with the Iconic reprinting, so he goes in and he's a legend I love so I felt like it was a great fit for Progenitus. The Raptor seems hilarious and has an immediate impact when I slam it down, which is nice.
Plague Boiler costs a lot of mana to set off, meanwhile I'm getting my face beat in. Boompile, on the other hand, works all the time - 50% of the time. The fact that players need to respond to the tap without knowing if it'll go off is hilarious. People not sacrificing and then losing their board or saccing their board for a dud is hilarious.
Sphinx Ambassador is fine but the problem is in this Timmy deck I find everyone else's Creatures fail to measure up. Or they do have one obvious choice with the Sphinx then can't really get. It's more of a problem of the deck's theme than Sphinx being bad. I can't do ridiculous things with the Sphinx. Meanwhile, Kraum helps me with card draw which the deck still needs a little help with, he's kind of sizable and Haste with Flying means he can't quite be ignored.
Rites of Flourishing has fed my opponents far more than it ever did for me. Too many other players ran away with the game with it. I don't mind the hug elements in the deck, but I'd expect to get some value out of them too. Frontier Siege replaces Rites by fixing a different problem: throughput. I would have a certain amount of lands but I could only cast one fatty and then have three to four mana still open. With Frontier Siege set to Khans, I can cast one fatty in my first main and another in the second. The deck causes problems when I just drop one fatty at a time, it'll be more fun with two per turn instead.
Planar Bridge was fun in concept but it was just too expensive. Yidris is a fatty of sorts and helps me make even more ridiculous plays. Play a seven drop and then get a six, VALUE!
A bit more ramp in the form of Kor Cartographer. With this, I think I have single ramp stapled onto a body in the game. I decided to cut Vona because she didn't quite fit the deck: not big enough nor a Wrath effect. She was fun, spot removal is decent but there's something nice about smashing everything in play and start again.
Hell's Caretaker asked too much of me to reanimate, so when I discovered Dawnbreak Reclaimer I made an immediate swap. Reclaimer is insane, as I can choose a Creature that probably won't effect me while my opponent will either grab ramp which lets me get ahead or one of my many obnoxious fatties. The fact it says Choose instead of Target also means the Reclaimer gets around a lot of supposed yard protectors.
This cut really hurt as I have a huge nostalgia factor for Akroma. She does a lot but with how creatures have been advancing over the last ten years, she is now overcosted. Her Triple White has also been problem at times and she was the sole Creature that I considered for the deck that was triple of the same pips. With that, I cede her position to Zetalpa and his much more manageable 2 White. He's the flappy, slappy no-nappy dino.
Etali is in for how efficient he plays cards off of the top and I value that much more than Stalking Vengeance Fling clause and Haste. Costing one less doesn't hurt either.
Nezahal is a draw engine, much better than Drogskol and dodges removal too. I think this will be a great dino at annoying my opponents.
Diabolic Servitude is solid, I really like it but Journey to Eternity does the same job and so much better. The lack of an exile clause on the land is bonkers.
Zacama embodies Progenitus: big, splashy obnoxious fatty. The deck struggles with life gain and this helps. Steel Hellkite rarely got in to destroy Creatures or Noncreatures because it got chumped, blocked or blown up before getting value. With Zacama and the amount of mana this deck makes, I will be able to get some value out of him before he gets swept away by another inevitable wrath.
Kothophed killed me for the third time and that was enough for me to look for alternatives. Enter a Flying Legendary Craw Wurm that draws cards. It'll do.
Boompile from the outside looked hilarious but when I had my hand on the trigger and it failed to blow up the board, I felt like the game played a great joke on me. I don't want to spend mana on maybes, I want results. So swapping back to Deed which I know the deck has enough mana that I can probably play it and pop it on the same turn. Also, it is very possible to pop it and mostly leave my board intact.
I'm going to be switching Commanders for this after Jodah, Archmage Eternal was spoiled. Don't worry, Progenitus will still be in the 99 but I've decided to cut all of the Ramp Creatures and instead run more utility Legends to make this pseudo-Legend Tribal. With this change, I'm going to need to upgrade my deck's mana base and this is the start:
I also added in a few Creatures that are good utility Creatures at that low level. Once I can think of better Legends for my low curve I might replace one or three. Cutting my Creatures that can Fetch the Duals, I cut the Duals as well for another cycle of Trilands. The deck doesn't care about tempo hits because again, this is my most Casual deck, but with Jodah's ability I am even more concerned about getting WURBG setup.
Jodah takes up Progenitus' chair, but the old Hydra doesn't leave the deck. I cut the two least impactful cards for my new Commander and a Wrath my deck will mostly ignore.
Bruse was probably the least useful 'low drop' so he got the axe for the last card this deck wants from Dominaria. I did think of getting Muldrotha, the Gravetide but I don't the deck would benefit that much from her considering how expensive she is.
Hmm... That's a good idea, it would be like a second Selvala's Stampede. The only issue I can think of is missing certain Creatures; i.e. X is 6 and I get 7+ drops. But it is also Ramp which this deck mostly neglects, intentionally. This is Timmy enough that I think Land Ramp would be solid. I'll have to consider it!
Mind's Dilation whiffs more often than not; that's just how the math works when peoples decks are usually 40% lands. I got tired of the Dilation not doing much for 7 mana. To make a point, I kept a rolling track of how many times Dilation whiffed and the numbers didn't look good for the Enchantment. We're talking 12 Lands or bad spells out of 15 triggers. 3/15 unknown spells I get to rip is not worth 7 mana. Tatyova will help my life, draw me cards and is even making me think of adding new ways to play additional lands. This deck needs the help with the new Lairs; they're worth it for color fixing but that's annoying when they send my tempo back that much.
I had to jump through so many hoops to setup a good Yidris situation and this deck is not the most agile, so it was incredibly hard. That's before I even consider any interaction my opponents had. I like Yidris is really cool but not cool enough to justify how much work he requires without any payoff, including the obnoxious color requirements. Wayward Swordtooth goes in as he's a fatty, which this deck is all about, and he helps me ramp in a fairly fair fashion. The amount of Bounce or ETBT Lands in the deck has been awkward as of late but the colors they give me is worth it. Swordtooth should help solve some of that.
Baleful Strix was a one-shot draw effect, Edric lets me draw as long as I keep swinging. It also keeps within the psuedo-group hug theme that the deck has going.
Oracle of Mul Daya is just a better four drop than Faerie Artisans because it lets me ramp faster to my fatties. I fully expect to cut this card once I have a deck that is obviously most deserving.
Gamekeeper is fine as making a random Creature, but I rather have Marchesa because I guess this deck is going full Legend Tribal. Plus the Monarch is a fun mechanic.
Over the months people have faced this deck, they kept being surprised when I didn't have any Eldrazi. "Why don't you have Eldrazi?!" and I would shrug. I got an Ulamog out of a collection I bought and I thought, 'why not?' I can cheat him out with a Birthing Pod with Progentius. I cut Magmatic Force because it wasn't as big or flashy as it used to be; plus triple red is a pain to cast at times. I cut Akroma, Angel of Wrath for the same reason and I am much more fond of her than Magmatic Force.
Seaside Citadel had the least amount of colors used in this deck out of all of the trilands, I think. I just eyeballed it. Path of Ancestry goes in as another five color land.
Vengeance used to be all that; but then they just kept adding more Types to the game. The fact that it Cycles does nothing for this deck. Play of the Game cleans that board deep, plus I might be able to get assistance from a player at casting it. I'm expecting this to cost eight 95% of the time, but there might be a fun corner case where I'm short mana and someone is willing to foot the bill.
Bringer of the Blue Dawn has been in the deck since the inception, just as a 5/5 WUBRG with Trample that draws me two cards. Unfortunately, since its print and the tuning of the deck, it is starting to show its age. I cut it for Vaevictis, who has already shown to be absolutely absurd. I've already popped out Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre, Sheoldred, Whispering One and Gisela, Blade of Goldnight. That's in one game. It also proceeded to pick off annoying cards on my opponents' sides; it is also part of the psuedo-group hug the deck runs when I use it against newbies. If they go spell heavy, they've just lost another permanent. I also find that 3BRG is far easier to play than WUBRG, plus Flying is better than Trample.
Goreclaw is a legendary Frontier Siege. That's what I saw when she was spoiled so I knew what I was going to axe when I got my hands on a copy.
Cutting Wayward Swordtooth makes me sad, as it is a fatty, but I guess I'm going more for Legendary than Fatties now. It was either cut that or Oracle of Mul Daya but she is absolutely absurd. Mina and Denn come in to help with all of the ETBT and Bounce Lands. They could also be used as psuedo-draw by bouncing a Temple to dig into what I want for 2 mana once I've dumped my hand of Lands.
Soul of the Harvest rarely got me to draw cards, as I usually was swinging with it rather than generating a card advantage engine. I'm not sure if this is the right way to go, but Jhoira will be drawing me a lot of cards.
Windbrisk usually gained me a lot of life, I am sad to see it go but I think strengthening my theme would really solidifying the various 'Legends Matter' cards. I put Evra in the Raptor's place, as I figure she can gain as much life as the giant bird could have.
Reki and Sire both draw cards. Cutting Sire was actually difficult, I had the option of Harvester of Souls and Isperia, Supreme Judge. I kept Isperia due to being a Legend, despite my thought of her being the weakest of the three. I cut Sire over Harvester because Sire causes such a response that the table starts considering me enemy number one over how many cards the Sire gets. That or they decide to slow their land drops. Harvester doesn't cause as much pain, plus the Deathtouch can matter if he gets into a trade with a huge Creature.
Chromanticore is sort of hard to cast, or as I often prefer, Bestow. Weatherlight lets me draw more of my Legends, plus it gives my smaller Legends something to do once we get to the mid and end game.
I want my Wraths to be deep cleans, this deck doesn't do so well against non-Creature threats. Decree of Pain doesn't, even if it draws many cards. I think Primeval's Glorious Rebirth can be as devastating.
Farhaven Elf is ramp and color fixing; I haven't really had a problem with colors do to the deck's mana base. Untaidake is also Ramp for all of my Legends.
Between Kambal draining people for playing noncreatures and Ikra Sidiqui essentially taking a number from Windbrisk Raptor, I should be fine in the life gain department.
Mathas was too hard to cast, he asked for too many colours that early without a payoff. I found I never had enough mana to use Evra and further my board, so Lifegain 4 wasn't worth it, especially without evasion.
I decided to cut the more expensive, or in the case of Edric, elaborate card draw engines. I need ways to land a draw engine early, that I can easily cast. I do not know if I can guarantee a CC on turns 3/4, so I stuck with cards that give draws or cards relatively easily. By fixing my early top decks, I can find more lands to play so that the deck doesn't get stuck on four or five lands. Late game, it'll also let me filter those lands away for haymakers I want to cast.
Edit: I added Selvala as she is a Legend that helps me draw cards, ramps me and has a pseudo-group hug effect. Seems like a perfect fit for this deck and its new direction.
