Hi again! I'm here for a fourth build! The challenge for my friends this time around has been to build mono-colour Commander. The five of us each have a colour to represent, and I was second to last to pick and ended up with Green. Nevertheless, I'm feeling pretty good about my choice of commander and the strategy. I didn't want to go with a full-on Stax strategy (there are commanders that do it better anyways), but I thought a combination of control and a powerful clock would be an interesting combination.
The deck can be very explosive, often getting Titania on turn three or even two. On the other hand, it can lock down multiple opponents off their mana until they're overwhelmed by 5/3s.
Other than that, the deck is a blast to play. I like being able to make 5/3s (or 7/5s) at instant speed and killing people out of nowhere. I can pump out a lot creatures at the end of an opponent's turn and pull out wins that they can't react to. I can be a super grindy deck like I can also be the fast aggressor, depending on the situation. The deck feels flexible and plays on a unique angle of the game, especially in Green.
If you have any other comments or suggestions, I'd be very grateful!
Two things stick out to me. One, there should be a gaea's cradle if possible (I know it to be awfully pricey) and two, forest based fetchlands of the windswept heath variety. The others are far from bad, but I don't know that I would run them unless I had to. Somewhere in here there is a pretty competitive titania list. I would really look there for ideas. She's a very very good general.
Seems a decent decklist so far. Trying to remember most of what I used for Titania, melded into Gitrog. How does the deck play out with drawing cards? I didnt see too many options, could of missed them. Elemental Bond did some major legwork for me. Also the +1 trample infect sorcery killed tables.Triumph of the Hordes
Yeah. I could see elemental bond doing major work in here. He already has garruks packleader and you've a ready source of 3+ power tokens in the command zone. The cut could be mighty emergence. Drawing more gas is more important than making big tokens bigger.
I agree that this isn't the best deck for yavimaya elder. She is excellent value, but your general needs things that are more specific. Any thought given to groundskeeper? It's slow, but if you have the slot, it might be worth a shot. It's always value in a deck that needs to get lands back, even if they are only basics.
Failing that, what about evolutionary leap as an outlet for the tokens?

Cradle is something I might invest in in the future, but is not something I currently want to purchase. All the other expensive cards in my current list are things I already own, so I'm not really spending much to build this deck.
Thanks for the catch on the fetches. I had a spare Heath in my collection that went right in, but then I completely forgot about putting any others in. I'll get my hands on a Wooded Foothills and Verdant Catacombs seems like a worthy investment. Thank you!
Groundskeeper is already in my deck and works well enough, though it's not a really powerful card.
I don't know if I like the idea of sacrificing my 5/3s when I could end up with something like Groundskeeper in my hand. The tokens seem too powerful to be sacrificed like that.

In terms of card draw, I have a few things, but I could always use more! Realms Uncharted is absolutely great. Packleader is good, Sylvan Library has been decent but not always that good, Creeping Renaissance has been mostly bad and Life from the Loam is a card advantage machine. I had a lock going with LftL and Burgeoning, Strip Mine, Wasteland and Tectonic Edge that just wrecked my opponents.
Elemental Bond seems perfect for me. Triumpth of the Hordes is also amazing and could wipe a table, like you said. I'll find room for both of those!
You only sacrifice the tokens when you are going to lose them anyways. Mr. 12 board wipes, meet mr. card advantage engine. Greater good works quite similarly.
A non expensive mono green type staple card should be duplicant.
I can't believe I missed the groundskeeper. Whoops.....
If you can run conjurer's closet, you're better off removing it for temur sabertooth. It costs 1 less to play, can be searched by all your creature tutors, and is better at protecting itself. It also gets insane with any of your enters the battlefield effects (all of them really).
Fade into antiquity is far from janky, in my opinion. In my meta, it's practically a staple because everyone and their mother runs gods from theros block. However, an argument could be made for unravel the aether and deglamer as being potentially better. Failing that, if daretti stax is troublesome, you could always play something he's gonna have a real hard time answering like titania's song....sucks for your few artifacts, but it completely wrecks him. That I can promise!
Beyond all this, I think two cards I would give serious thought to because it really doesn't hurt you too much is craterhoof behemoth (I know everyone and their mother runs it but you seem interested in a semi competitive win) and wave of vitriol. Wave will remove a lot of your stuff, but it will pretty much screw up everyone else's non creature non basic plans.
As an afterthought, you run all the sacrifice lands. How about splendid reclamation for the old late game card advantage shift?
I was just about to post my own build as well. In testing Splendid Reclamation has the potential do a lot of work. I one crazy turn, I activated Nevinyrral's Disk after resolving Natural Affinity. I was able to float enough mana to cast Splendid Reclamation after the boardwipe, which basically left me with the only person that had a board state (or any lands to be exact). I also agree with Elemental Bond being awesome in the deck.
With your permission, Upkeep, I would like to post a link to my thread when I post it?
Since you are using Song of the Dryads...how about adding Vesuva? You can copy the colorless forest to give you whatever the original card was... A few weeks ago, my mono green deck was abusing Jace the MindSculpter...

Wow, another great comment with tons of great suggestions!
I can't believe I forgot Duplicant! I'm not quite sure what to take out for it at this time, but I'll definitely find room somewhere.
Temur Sabertooth seems great! The only problem is the constant mana investment involved, as opposed to the closet's one-time 5cmc investment. However, the Sabertooth does a lot more in an average game than just blink creatures. It's also a 4-power creature that can attack and defend and it saves my creatures from removal and board wipes while protecting itself. Seems like a good trade!
Craterhoof Behemoth has seen a lot of play in our group already and although it's a great card, I'd like to leave it out for now, just because we're all so sick of seeing it.
With your permission, Upkeep, I would like to post a link to my thread when I post it?
I had never understood why Natural Affinity was such a popular card, but I really misread it. I didn't realize that it turned all lands into creatures instead of just your own. I also didn't notice it was and instant. Oh the shenanigans...
Of course you can link your thread! In fact, if you want to, why don't you also post your list here?

... That works? That's pretty weird. Vesuva's not a bad choice regardless. My next question would be: what is the minimum amount of coloured land needed to cast everything in my deck?
If you have trouble with Board Wipes then Wrap in Vigor could be a good tool, but might not be good if you can't tutor for it. It is a lot less mana intensive than your other options, but it is a one time use.
For an alternative to Craterhoof, you can use Kamahl, Fist of Krosa. Not only is he a turorable and repeatable Overrun, but he also plays well with Titania. Making your lands in to 1/1 chump blockers that will then give you a 5/3 seems good!

Song of the Dryad turns permanent into forest.
Vesuva targets said forest with copy ability
Vesuva copies all text on the "forest" card EXCEPT the part that makes it a forest, because that is on Song of the Dryads, not the text of the copied card. So you get a fully functional copy for 0 that is not a forest. (I found this on another thread)

Thanks, but I think I'll stick to my current choices. Indestructible stuff or sacrificing to Greater Good in response has been working well in testing.
As for Overruns, Triumph of the Hoard has been amazing. It just steals games away. Probably one of the best additions to the deck so far.
Ebur0n,
Thanks for sharing your list. I see that our decks have a lot in common, but also have a few interesting differences.
I did not include the non-basics that require sacrificing in order to get more mana like Lotus Vale. I feel like they can be inconsistent, what with their pricey cost preventing them from being played at certain stages of the game and being destroyed easily. I also prioritized high-impact non-basics, foregoing cards like Mouth of Ronom. Perhaps this is wrong.
I tried Scrying Sheets for a really long time, but even with my 18 S-C forests, I only ever revealed a single one to draw. It felt like a total waste and I eventually juts replaced it with Dryad Arbor, which was much better.
I love Hall of Gemstone. I would be using it if it weren't for the fact that we are all playing mono-coloured decks.
I'm not sure I like Ward of Bones here. The only real affect I see it having in a typical game is denying someone from playing too many atifacts. Unless you adapt your playing to it, you'll always have a few creatures out and we do play a ton of lands. Has it been useful to you?
A big difference I see with your list is that you use a lot more ramp spells. As they are often fetching only basics, are they really contributing that much to the game plan?
One card I don't see in your list that I really believe should be there is Burgeoning. This card is absolutely insane in the early game and is a great combo with Life from the Loam at any stage of the game. It also helps get around having to sacrifice City of Traitors.
Thanks again! I'll definitely be making more changes based on what I see. Natural Affinity is really starting to grow on me. Having Titania in play and this in hand with open mana makes any board wipe practically a win for me. On top of surprise blocks that turn into 5/3s, this card seems great!

So far, I have been disappointed with Scrying Sheets as well. I did pick up a Dryad Arbor yesterday, so will be trying that. I have also briefly considered Rath's Edge just to ping an annoying 1-toughness creature.
I play it just to give my creatures haste. I don't want to rely on just Concordant Crossroads just in case that gets removed somehow. I may consider other options that could give haste too, just couldn't think of any.

So far, I have used it very little, but when I did, it did really slow the game down. After a board wipe, it makes it so that pretty much nobody is playing creatures either, allowing us to find our game changing cards.
A big difference I see with your list is that you use a lot more ramp spells. As they are often fetching only basics, are they really contributing that much to the game plan?
They make the deck a bit more explosive (They become even better with Lotus Cobra in play. Sometimes they are dead draws, but usually I have other things to do by then.

I have considered it, but with all my ramp spells, Exploration, Orcale, Azusa, ..., I usually have very few lands in my hand. It is definitely a card I am always considering as an option.
I also pulled a Nissa, Vital Force during my draft yesterday. I have her in my deck to test right now.
Just a thought. When you mentioned Burgeoning. I was also thinking of Manabond. After a Praetor's Counsel or Creeping Renaissance and having a ton of lands in hand, you can drop them in play immediately. It becomes even better with Creeping Renaissance because of the flashback. It may just be too cute?
What do you sacrifice? A 5/3 beater token? Would be great if you had mana dorks laying around but face smashers...not worth the price tag/poorer synergy in this deck imho.
Another Titania player chiming in here with a few thoughts. If I remember, I'll put up my decklist when I get home.
Natural Order - I run it, and yes, I sacrifice a 5/3. And most of the time, I get Craterhoof Behemoth. If I didn't run Hoofy, I might cut it, but with him in there, it's a fantastic way of seeing out a game. It can also grab things like Regal Force and Bane of Progress which are often well worth a 5/3 and if you're forced to, there's always Sylvan Safekeeper for land sac, Acidic Slime for non-creature removal, Dosan the Falling Leaf if there's an annoying blue player trying to screw with you and so on.
Eldritch Evolution is another similar card I like. I probably use it on Titania herself more often than not (thanks to her ETB ramping you, it effectively only raises the command tax by 1) - Regal Force and Bane of Progess again are good, as is Duplicant (this card being why, without Hoofy, I'd prefer it to NO) or even some lower CMC things like Dosan - while a 5/3 token can get the all important Safekeeper if I need a sac outlet. I've had Birthing Pod in there for the same reasons, but having seen EE work, and with my relatively low creature count, I'm probably gonna cut it as it usually acts as a 1 shot tutor effect thanks to my poor chain and people killing it.
On the subject of sacrificing 5/3s, I'm a big fan of Life's Legacy and Momentous Fall. Yes, counterspells make them a 2-for-1, but draw 5 is usually worth it. Again, I often use them on Titania. Hunter's Insight is another draw 5 that does good work for me. With these alongside the obvious Greater Good, Shamanic Revelation, Regal Force and Elemental Bond I often amaze opponents at just how many cards a mono green deck can draw. My best is hitting both Hunter's Insight and Life's Legacy on a Marit Lage token in the same turn....
I don't really like Lotus Vale - too risky even with the recursion - but I do run Scorched Ruins as the payoff for it - i.e. ramping - is much better.
Groundskeeper is bad. If he could hit non basics maybe, but two mana to get back a forest is not worth it IMO.
I will say though in general I find I play the deck almost like a combo deck - my early turns are spent ramping and getting some card draw from the aforementioned spells, before I hit critical mass and can afford that massive gamewinning turn where I sac all my lands and drop Concordant Crossroads (or sac EoT on an opponents turn followed by a Gaea's Cradle on mine) and Craterhoof Behemoth/Triumph of the Hordes and swing with 10+ elementals.
What do you sacrifice? A 5/3 beater token? Would be great if you had mana dorks laying around but face smashers...not worth the price tag/poorer synergy in this deck imho.
I don't mind sacrificing a 5/3 token for the right payoff. As mentioned by PhroX, the deck plays like a combo deck. I usually end up sacrificing my 5/3 tokens to Greater Good until I find what I need to win. There are plenty of ways to sac lands, which just creates more 5/3's. As for Life's Legacy and Momentous Fall, PhroX, do you really find they are worth it? Also, would love to see your decklist.
Personally, I really like Lotus Vale, mainly because it gets us Green mana, which is the only drawback of Scorched Ruins (only get colorless). Both net us 2 tokens.
Eldritch Evolution seems a bit narrow compared to the other tutors we can run. Yes, it can provide great value in some situations, but I feel Natural Order, Chord of Calling and Green Sun's Zenith rank ahead of it. I'd probably even run Worldly Tutor over EE.

Life's Legacy is amazing - 2 mana and a token (or a land if you don't have one available...) for 5 cards. There are plenty of blue and black decks which would be happy to run card draw on that level, and we're in mono green. Momentous Fall is less good due to the mana cost, but it's still solid and the instant speed lets you do some tricks (e.g. the obvious block then cast)

I tend not to be too short of G, and they are really obvious Strip Mine targets. I used to run Lotus Vale but felt it was a little too risky for the payoff. Still, it's not something I'd reject out of hand, and if it works for you, great.
Eldritch Evolution seems a bit narrow compared to the other tutors we can run. Yes, it can provide great value in some situations, but I feel Natural Order, Chord of Calling and Green Sun's Zenith rank ahead of it. I'd probably even run Worldly Tutor over EE.
EE is great for me for the things it can get from Titania. I'm not bothered saccing her - as I said before, she repays half the command tax on ETB, plus getting her killed is a good way to get back key lands that people blow up - and 3 mana for a Regal Force or Duplicant is well worth it. As for the other tutors, well...
Anyway, here's my decklist. I'm still missing the enemy fetches, so if and when i get them I'll drop Grasslands and probably a panorama. Birthing Pod is on the cut list due to Eldritch Evolution doing better. I'm gonna try to get a Garruk's Packleader - it's been on my want list for a while, but I've had real trouble finding a copy. Maybe also cut Freyalise, Llanowar's Fury if I need a slot - she offers some solid utility, but nothing outstanding.
Thanks for sharing your deck as well. If you are looking to cut Freyalise, I can recommend Nissa, Vital Force. Her ultimate is bonkers in our deck, but also just the +1 to untap a land (Gaea's Cradle) is absolutely great! I have never been unhappy to have her.
She's on my list of cards I'd like to try. Really wish her -3 was a Regrowth instead of a Nature's Spiral - if it was, she would've been a no-brainer include - but if she's performing well for you, I'll look into getting my hands on one.
Thanks so much for sharing your decklists, KeMT and Phrox! I really feel like I'm on the right track now.
I've made multiple changes to my decklists to reflect what's been going on in this thread. My deck is certainly running more smoothly and feels more versatile than before thanks to just a handful of cards.
I certainly agree that the deck sometimes feels like a combo deck. Pumping out a bunch of tokens at the end of turn and then attacking with them for the win has certainly been the predominant strategy.
Command Beacon is probably one of the most synergistic non-basics for this deck. That's going in.
Again, I'm not sure I like the dorks route when we have the option to just play really good non-basic lands and go as fast or faster (not to mention safer). I'm a lot more in line with Phrox's deck from that perspective.
Of the "trifecta", I would probably oddly enough say Regal Force is the most important for me. Craterhoof Behemoth is the strongest, certainly - it wins the game when it hits play - but there are other creatures that can do the same role, albeit not as well (Thunderfoot Baloth for example). Avenger of Zendikar is a plan B if you can't get enough 5/3s to stick, but it's not something I need that often, and stuff like Rampaging Baloths can fill that role. Regal Force is tutorable mass card draw (especially with, I'll say it again, Eldritch Evolution). There really isn't anything else that can go into that role.
Parallel Lives is good. Sometimes can be a bit "win more", but, particularly if you can get it down early, can do plenty of work. It's also a massive target for people, and frankly, I'd rather they burned their Krosan Grips on PL than the real game winners like Greater Good or Concordant Crossroads.
Willow Satyr is a card I have a real soft spot for, but I've found him to be too fragile and slow unless I can reliably give him haste or flash. He's great in a Yeva, Nature's Herald deck for example, but I couldn't get him to work in Titania - my only haste source is something I'm not going to play until I'm ready to win.
Command Beacon is indeed highly synergistic with our general - if you don't need the ramp/recursion form her ETB, you can ignore command tax. If you're interested, there's an infinite combo with it, Titania and Food Chain, which will give you infinite ETBs, Landfall triggers and mana for creature spells. You can then use the latter to loop Titania and a Terramorphic Expanse or similar to make infinite 5/3s.
As you could see from my decklist, I'm not a fan of mana dorks in this deck - there's no real synergy with the overall plan. If you want to go all in for a fast win, they might help, though if you want another early ramp spell, I'd consider Carpet of Flowers first. It is meta dependent (which, along with the fact I finally picked up a Mana Crypt, is why I'm not running it, we seem to have gone off blue for a while, though I'm considering putting it back in), but it will usually do a pretty solid job - even 1 mana a turn is a decent return for a 1 drop.
Personally, I don't see the need for either Greaves or Plate. There's no creature I care enough about to want to run protection. If you want to run Willow Satyr though, I'd say Greaves if you had to have one for the haste.
Alright. After many days of testing, I can now say that I'm done with Smokestack, Shaman of Forgotten Ways, Courser of Kruphix and Rites of Flourishing. 'Stack just wasn't doing very much ever. Shaman has won me games, but more often than not would just die before he was ever useful (his mana ability was rarely usable in this deck). 11 mana is just a bit too much. Courser is frustrating because I can't actually play the land on top of my deck if I already cast a land that turn, so while it offers some form of bad card advantage, it doesn't actually ramp. The lifegain was mediocre at best. Rites is just too... fair. The fact that every other player gets to take advantage of it before I do is just frustrating and sometimes they make better use of it than I do.
So, I made some room for more cards!
I think I'm going to try out Kamahl, Fist of Krosa. After winning a few games with Natural Affinity, I see the power of animating lands and I've also really been wanting a tutorable Overrun effect. Kamahl expands on both of these aspects nicely. Thanks to Darkninja107!
I would be nice to get some more card draw in. I'm torn between Regal Force, Hunter's Insight, or something like Momentous Fall/ Life's Legacy. The problem is they're all situational draw spells. One requires creatures, the other an unblocked combat and the last a fortuitous situation where I have 4 open mana and a creature that's about to die. I'm leaning towards Regal Force, but I could use some input here.
I've also decided to include Treefolk Harbinger. I've seen too many situations go by where I really needed a removal spell but couldn't tutor for it and waiting a turn would have been just fine. Grabbing a forest isn't the worst thing in the world either.
Lastly, I'm seeing a lot of the refined lists running Lotus Cobra and I'm beginning to understand why. First of all, fetch lands make this crazy good. Second, it allows for some degenerate plays with extra lands entering the battlefield, or at the very least a good ramp card for the early game.
Here's the decklist again, since we're on page two:

Elemental Bond did some major legwork for me. Also the +1 trample infect sorcery killed tables.Triumph of the Hordes
Credit to DolZero for this awesome sig!

You missed the last fetchland in Misty Rainforest. Also, blighted woodland would like to be considered, I think.
Credit to DolZero for this awesome sig!
With your permission, Upkeep, I would like to post a link to my thread when I post it?
I was thinking Wave of Vitriol would be an excellent choice. I thought taking out Freyalise, Llanowar's Fury for it. Does that sound like a good switch?
Splendid Reclamation is exactly what I was looking for! I'm swapping out Restore for this immediately.

I found Creeping Renaissance quite disappointing. Praetor's Council and Splendid Reclamation were both much better, but I see you're using them as well.
Akroma's Memorial is not too win-more?

Cards like Lotus Vale and Scorched Ruins are good for 2 reasons:
1. I play Winter Orb: Untapping those 2 lands under a Winter Orb puts us WAY ahead (Getting 4GGG from just those two lands)
2. They provide "free" sacrifice effects to generate tokens. Eventually you can bring back the sacrificed lands with Splendid Reclamation, Life from the Loam or Crucible of Worlds.
Mouth of Ronom is there as removal if needed. It kills things like Platinum Angel for example.
So far, I have been disappointed with Scrying Sheets as well. I did pick up a Dryad Arbor yesterday, so will be trying that. I have also briefly considered Rath's Edge just to ping an annoying 1-toughness creature.
Creeping Renaissance has been ok. I will be testing Wildest Dreams instead.
Thanks for the feedback
Also, in testing, Nissa, Vital Force can be insane. Untapping Gaea's Cradle is never bad.
Does anyone have any thoughts on Natural Order?

Avenger of Zendikar-Regal Force-Craterhoof Behemoth... The cheesy green deck trifecta. I should probably include all three to make my deck better, but it just feels so bad.
What I'm really liking right now is Parallel Lives. Getting two 5/3s for a land seems pretty ridiculous. Chord of Calling and Hunter's Insight are also really interesting choices. I always forget about Willow Satyr. That card should be in every mono-green deck, like Hall of Gemstone.
Any comment on switching Lightning Greaves for Darksteel Plate? Still not sure about that one.
