So, this is a fairly unusual Grixis artifact build.
The focus is on artifact creatures because they tend to permanently die a little less often when you have Marchesa, the Black Rose out. Abuse ETBs and death triggers by looping and repeatably recurring stuff. Very important when Vandalblast is a card.
Arcbound Ravager is insanely overpowered in this list and should be tutored up whenever possible.
Everyone in my group calls this deck "Grixis EDH Affinity". While there are no actual cards with affinity for artifacts that could make the list, the deck nonetheless carries roleplayers from both past and present Affinity builds. The deck plays very differently from real affinity decks (with one exception), but it is amusing to see how these cards are still among some of the most powerful cards in this build. However, it isn't uncommon to win games from sacrificing all of your artifacts with Arcbound Ravager to power Marionette Master to close out games, which doesn't help dispel the comparison to affinity decks.
Sadly, the one other card that would absolutely make it in the list (both the decklist and "affinity list") if I could acquire one is Mox Opal. It deserves to be on the list if I can get one.
You have the means to loop etb/death triggers more than once per turn cycle because you have more ways to add counters at instant speed. Also you get the best Marchesa enabler in the game in Arcbound Ravager.
Your one-use sacrifice outlets provide more overall value
The deck's design works very well with non-infinite combo engines.
Cons:
Additional weaknesses to artifact hate
Mana curve is higher due to lack of available variety in artifact creatures.
Lower creature density than other variants. Your aggro game is weaker.
Less space for the insane typical engine creatures in typical builds
Small incompatibilities between artifact and creature sacrifice outlets.
The first turns of your game should be setting up your engine. Play cheap creatures or manarocks and then drop Marchesa. You can make your first few attacks about getting the dethrone triggers, especially if you have sac outlets to get a bit more value.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The real fun begins if you can set up what I call "the modular engine". This is where you have or tutor up Arcbound Ravager OR a modular creature + a sac outlet to go with an artifact creature of your choice, preferably one that generates value. Alternately, you have Metallic Mimic naming that card's creature type. However, by far the best plan is to get ravager because it is basically a one card engine in this deck which allows you to loop an effect every 2 turns. Not as efficient as the other options mentioned, but far more durable and far easier to grab. Now you grab stupid tons of value while potentially getting in some damage, but unlike most Marchesa lists this is not the stage in which you get the most damage in.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Finally, you'll need to acquire one of the win conditions to truly close out the game in a timely fashion. It can happen from old-fashioned beatdown but it is more likely one of the following options-
Marionette Master - 4 life per artifact allows very rapid focus fire on an opponent, and is also extra durable to boot. If you can increase its power via an attack, a clone, or say... a Cranial Plating, everyone will melt in very short order. Best wincon and reminiscent of old affinity kills.
Time Sieve: With the modular engine, you realistically sacrifice only two artifacts while gaining value and somewhat acting as your sacrifice outlet with some limitations. With enough resources it goes infinite, but even if it doesn't it provides so much time that beatdown becomes a far more viable option, especially as you GAIN value through each turn. The fact that it costs 2 mana is riduculous. Pair with Genesis Chamber for quick concessions.
Inkmoth Nexus - This land is legitimately scary with the modular engine, Cranial Plating, or just plain attacking with it enough times. Usually you'll want a plating to go with this for maximum effect. This is a Modern Affinity kill condition
Purphoros, God of the Forge: It goes with your engine cards to pile on the damage quite quickly. It is efficient, but its weakness is not being able to focus down threatening players and therefore it is a weaker option than the others on this list. Still potent.
Multiple pass refinement at goldfish basic functionality testing.
I have too many cards that "only work in late game" so Wake the Dead was cut in favor of another mana source. The only reason it was in the list in the first place was because I wanted to try out the card, but decks that self-mill are more suited to running the card.
Call me crazy, and in another decklist this would be, for sure, but do you REALLY want Darksteel Forge in this deck? Sure, it keeps your guys from dying, but that means they also are kept from coming back after dying.
Also how would Saheeli Rai perform in here, you think? Because SO MANY Grixis-colored walkers are flipping great with artifacts lol
That's a good question. It's in there as sort of a hedge against artifact nukes for things such as my sac outlets (especially my sac outlets) and mana rocks and artifact lands, but do I really need it?
I actually could see myself cutting the card at some point very soon. I'm already doing a decent job of trimming the curve, and cutting a 9 drop as well as my nonartifact 7 drop (since marionette master appears to be better) could do a lot toward that end.
Here is my list of cards I want to find room to add
Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas (Important because he digs 5 each turn and fishes for our "missing synergy pieces". Also animates big mana rocks to protect them) Time Sieve (Can go infinite) Arcbound Reclaimer (artifact recursion that has MODULAR) Faerie Mechanist (Glint-nest crane is cheaper and has a better effect but it can't be sacced or looped as effectively) Mirrorworks (This card should be stupid because it triggers on etb. Forgemaster should love it)
Filigree Familiar is another way to draw cards on a cheap Artifact Creature. Baleful Strix is also an Artifact Creature.
There's got to be something you could do with Triskelion.
Fast Mana is always good. Round out the suite with Talisman of Dominance and Talisman of Indulgence. Pinging yourself helps keep your life total lower than an opponent's for those Dethrone triggers. Phyrexian Altar is another way to get mana and sacrifice your Artifact Creatures.

The list is... actually not up to date (below 100 cards on accident). There was a Baleful Strix in from the beginning and I swapped a card recently for Talisman of Indulgence (harmonicon)
Trike I'm afraid I can't abuse because I have few ways of loading it up with additional +1/+1 counters. Otherwise it can only reliably do a ping a turn by itself, or 2 damage a turn cycle with a sac outlet. Still not bad and always worth keeping on my mind.
I opted not to run Filigree Familiar and actually try Faerie Mechanist. It's worse than Glint-nest Crane but it is an artifact meaning that it can do all of the abuse shenanigans. It's ETB is generally significantly better than "draw a card"
This deck is hardly casual I guess. I only lost one multiplayer game with it tonight...
Marionette Master caused around 400 points of life loss in all of those games. I think Purphoros is a reasonable inclusion in the deck judging by how brutally efficient that card is at cleaning people up. So, I guess this deck got the nickname "Grixis EDH affinity" due to that finisher and the use of Arcbound Ravager.
It also lived up to its name. My board does not "die to removal". Some grave hate came later, but by then it was too late.
Oh yeah. Darksteel Forge did nothing.
- Darksteel Forge
+ Mirrorworks
Gotta find something to cut for Purphoros, and time to watch out for increased grave hate next week.
Nice work on this, Plush I've been looking to update my budget Marchesa build, and being that I love Artifacts this looks really fun. I think I'll be using this as inspiration for my update I'm also building Sydri but I was shying away this for a minute due to having two heavy Artifact decks if I did, but it seems like they'll both be playing way differently than one another. Anyway...
As for a card to cut for Purphoros, God of the Forge: If the main post list is up to date, I have to ask how much you're swinging out. I'm looking at the list and Hammer of Purphoros stands out the most. I don't see this as a list that really gets much advantage from giving it's creatures Haste, even considering the Dethrone triggers from Marchesa Picturing myself playing this, I see myself putting a lot of creatures in play but mostly for the sake of combowombo for value and not attacking very much. I could be wrong, so please correct me if that is the case Otherwise I feel like Hammer is the weakest card in the list right now.
After reading your thread, I began theorizing and crafting a deck like this for a friend of mine. In my theory, I went a touch heavier on the pitch into the Graveyard idea and included the likes of Daretti, Scrap Savant and Scrap Mastery. This would lend itself to a similar build to Daretti, but with enough recursion, stands very well on its own. Perpetual Timepiece to pitch things into the graveyard and to use either Goblin Welder or Daretti to get some of those desired artifacts back into play as needed. I tend to favor red, as is evident by my choice. My Friend however went with a very blue approach in pure draw card and counters. I feel like counters in the deck are not as predominantly needed. Kaladesh really does favor the modular creatures.
I also upped the anti with more lands, no mana rocks, and simply cost reduction. I was looking at the likes of:
And just reducing the overall cost of artifacts. My friend had a spare Mycosynth Golem and Mycosynth Lattice, so we also tossed in March of the Machines and paired it with a Darksteel Forge. In case you're scratching your head, this makes all lands artifacts (with lattice). Then All artifacts become artifact creatures with power and toughness equal to cmc (MotM). Then Darksteel Forge makes all your artifacts indestructible. All your lands survive, all of their lands are blown away. then you just continue to turn and burn with Marchesa. Time Seive does work in a deck like this and serves as yet another sac outlet. Given that there are 12 modular creatures, it's pretty safe to run all twelve. Also, when they die, you can pour all of their modular counters onto the Ravager. There is so much synergy that can go into this deck it's unreal.
Sadly, I utterly despise Marchesa of the Black Rose as a commander. (Salt Factor number 5 for me on a personal level) So I will let someone else pilot this and just make it as mean as possible.
Kudos @plushpenguin!

Thanks. To answer your question, I do attack a decent amount, mostly for "free" dethrone triggers and with the big things. The haste is actually a very nice feature, however it is still the weakest card in the deck. The actual reason being that hitting RR costs on turn 3 is actually not that easy in this three color deck. It is a very nice convenience but it is by no means the most necessary thing ever. I'll be trying it out.
Arcbound Reclaimer being a modular creature was very nice and I'll probably make the switch permanent and put reclamation into my "sideboard" in case I need my plan B to be a bit more reliable. If I wanted a third one, I'll play the worker due to costing 1 and being trinket-fetchable so that I can "build my own Ravager" from any repeatable sac outlet.
Deck list changes have been made.
As a side note, the deck's mode B (no ravager modular sac outlet nonsense) has been decently passable as well. It isn't going to cause a table to bowl over but it does a decent job of keeping things in check and helping you dig until you hit the endgame. It's an interesting balance between infinite use and once-a-turn sac outlets because the former is more combo-y but the latter actually procures more value for when you can't combo.
I actually like this variant of the deck, it looks fun, and i've been looking for more things to justify adding an arcbound ravager to my marchesa build.
Modern: UUUBlue Man Group
Legacy: UWBMiracles
Edh: UUUThassa Control WWWHokori Stax GGGJolrael, Empress of Land Stompy BBBGriselbrand French List RBGShattergang(Super Villians) RWGHazezon Flicker UBRMarchesa Aggro URGMaelstom Wanderer (Maelstorm)

The combination of Mycosynth Lattice and March of the Machines turns all lands into 0/0 creatures and a creature with a thoughness of 0 dies, even if it's indestructible. If you want your lands to stay on the battlefield you need to give them +X/+1 somehow. But destroying all lands and preventing further landdrops is still a good way too win a game if you are already ahead on board.
You could go the other way with March of the Machines, and combo it with Liquimetal Coating and Dross Scorpion. Still a three card combo, and you can still justify Lattice and Forge in the 99. With the MotM+DS+LC combo, you control which lands get blown away, and can freely repeat the process with Dross Scorpion on the board. And if you find yourself ahead, drop lattice and lock the board up. It's a nice strategy, simple, can be done in stages, and keeps the momentum in your favor.
So many things that can be done here when playing with the artifacts.

I am R and U. I am both emotional and rational, valuing logic but following my gut when appropriate. At my best, I am intuitive and creative. At my worst, I am scattered and unpredictable.
Liquimetal Coating, while narrow in its applications, would not necessarily be a dead combo piece outside of the combo.
Using it to make Marchesa or Marionette Master into an artifact creature so you can load them up with counters from a modular creature is a real line of play. Also you could just sacrifice a nonartifact land if you needed to weld stuff. Or turn one of the opponent's enchantments into an artifact to weld.
Dross Scorpion, also not a dead combo piece outside of the combo with enough artifacts that tap to do things. Artifacts going to GY is a very common occurrence in the deck.
This is probably the best lockout combo for "having as few dead cards as possible" in the deck.
My meta isn't a fan of land lockout anyway, so I can't play these cards, although they did still complain about this deck regardless.. Although strangely enough they don't mind the Ugin's Nexus combo mentioned earlier. Also, this deck actually gets a very good amount of mileage out of extra turn effects, and so having an artifact tutorable one should be on my mind. It is simply unclear whether I want that one or Time Sieve.
In any case, Cranial Plating was one idea I had to make the deck more "Affinity-like" in theme, but it's probably not worth it. The deck does do a fair amount of attacking, but I would need to examine my average on-board artifact count before remotely considering it.
Although I will say that on Friday, the most threatening part of my opponent's Fracturing Gust was the lifegain that it gave the player.
Mechanist was trash, even when looped.
I don't have enough "harmless utility" for portal to really be good
Intuition was rarely used more than once.
Obelisk was not needed.
I also had too many clone effects.
I needed more draw effects in the deck. Didn't feel comfortable without them.
Which also made req tower pretty bad.
Plating is in testing because I usually hit a high enough artifact count to be impressed by how much it amplifies the regular chip damage you usually do to people.
I can't believe I forgot Lightning Greaves is a card in my first few iterations.
I... also realized the existence of Storage Matrix. Name artifacts.. or name lands and then sac your creatures with counters on them so they come back untapped before your next turn... However, it plays poorly with aggression and is only effective against enemy mana rocks and creatures.
The deck generally revolves around synergy between modular creatures and marchesa. For draw I run bunch "flavor" draw (artificer's epiphany, thoughtcast etc. and some trickets that cantrip) Other big part is the trinket synergy. I once machine gunned opponent's entire board with salvaging station, lotus bloom and executioner's capsule.
Heh. Well I wanted to play gearhulks... Also if I ever wanted to go all-in on the modular plan, it'd probably win by Time Sieve. Right now, I don't really feel like playing the card, because 5 artifacts is a LOT.
One basically made me sac all of my creatures and artifacts and then tutor up a Nihil spellbomb to use on myself. Ouch, got completely taken out there.
The second time he did it, he sacrificed all of my artifacts and got back duplicant to go eat my goblin welder.
Both times Emrakul got eaten before it was able to swing.
However, I was able to still win the second time. He played Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger, ate two of my things. I then cast Marionette Master.... making the servo tokens for the first time in my life. I chumped Ulamog, ate the 20 cards, and before damage did a convoluted play involving sacrificing Inventor's Fair to get Arcbound Reclaimer (all my other recursion is gone from the Emrakul). I draw my card, play Sensei's Divining Top, play Arcbound Reclaimer, put my Duplicant back on top of my deck and use top to draw it so that I can eat the ulamog.
I somehow managed to win that game with the help of Purphoros/
Deck needed an additional sacrifice outlet. Hedron Archive doesn't do enough in such a crowded slot on the curve.
Next up is room for the card that is almost always run in these decks: Mikaeus, the Unhallowed. Secondly, I'll probably find a spot for Time Sieve somewhere....
Hey I play Breya Artifact Control didn't invest much in it (starter + 20-30$) and I wanted to know how you would compare both of them as they both have similar colors, I also play the Marionette and a bunch of the same cards as you (except obviously I dont have dethrone but I run counter spells instead)
I'd like to know which one (commander wise) you think is more competitive in a duel format of 20 life.
Also you can go infinite with Time Sieve + Thopter Assembly

Probably Breya. It's less dependent on keeping one thing alive through removal and dethrone is really bad in 1v1.
The deck plays to its strengths well (being hard to disrupt and generating good value) and wins but not too much. It is exactly what I asked for in this deck. Weaknesses involve not having great ways of responding at instant speed, so it's not great against dedicated combo. It's just a pure value deck and so I never built it to try and fight those kind of decks anyway. I tend to win at VERY low life totals, so managing it is quite important.
Lastly, because of the typical modified 4c precon builds that everyone is playing, Merciless Eviction use is at an all-time high. Be wary. Keep your infinite sac outlet on hand.
Recent changes:
Removed:
- Kudoltha Forgemaster - Finding 3 artifacts to sacrifice for profit early on is pretty difficult without losing your manabase and it doesn't propel you to lategame as well with infinite value. Also there are a lot of artifact tutors in the deck and this one often isn't used more than once
- Burnished Hart - Too slow
- Carrion Feeder - Actually fairly good, but I'm replacing it with something that has slightly more synergy in this build.
- Scuttling Doom Engine - By far the worst of the robot bunch
- Shadowmage Infiltrator - Also fairly good, but I'm also replacing it with a card of similar functionality.
- Swan Song - Decent, but replacing it with a card that generates more value over time in its role
- Blade of Selves - 4 to equip is actually kind of rough and it doesn't work well with grave loops.
Added:
+ Panharmonicon: This thing is actually dumb. All you need is one ETB effect in this deck to loop to go nuts. I regret ever saying that it might not work out. Also none of my cuts for creatures have been ETB effects. Mirrorworks makes this go absolutely out of control.
+ Faerie Artisans: This card generates a lot of incremental value and gets better when you can easily sacrifice the artifact tokens. With some trickery, it can be sacrificed itself to keep the token and still stick around.
+ Greater Gargadon: Fill's Carrion Feeder's role. Similarly hard to remove as a sac outlet, with 3 extra upsides. A) It sacrifices both artifacts and creatures, B) It is a more relevant body to throw at people once unsuspended. C) Makes Combustible Gearhulk better. Downside is that it has limited uses. Don't suspend unless you need to, and don't hardcast unless super desperate.
+ Thopter Spy Network: A little slower than Shadowmage here, but it makes tokens that we can abuse.
+ Glen Elendra Archmage: Why settle for one negate when you can have 2+?
+ Vicious Shadows: I need a solid wincon that can win quickly in the deck other than Purphoros or Marionette Master. This fits.
+ Diabolic Intent: The sac clause sometimes makes this better than Demonic Tutor in this deck.
I'm going between Rite of Replication and Expropriate right now. The latter actually seems better in most situations. Nothing of mine I copy immediately wins the game except Marionette Master, and I generally don't need to copy that five times to win the game immediately in a good board state. The main problem is that it feels kind of trivial to win with Expropriate because it is that good of a card.
Wow, your deck morphed from something solid to something that looks really competitive. Intimidating, really.
I've been finding Matter Reshaper to be absolutely bonkers if you're OK with a nonartifact creature. He really is insane if you can get him looping. Also, wouldn't Ashnod's Altar be better than Worn Powerstone?
I was also thinking of adding Greater Gargadon to my Marchesa but then found out he was $10 and noped right out of there. What can I say, I'm cheap.

Oh matter reshaper is a great card. I would just need to get filter lands to support the card, and space for it. It's a cheap pickup though, and I'm always looking for good ways of hitting extra lands.
Actually I plan on getting a Thran Dynamo instead of a Powerstone. Having extra mana is really nice because the finishers are mostly high cmc cards. Powerstone is just a current budget inclusion. Keep in mind that my average cmc is higher than most Marchesa decks.
I already own a Greater Gargadon from a long while back and so I threw it in and I will publicly state the nature of my mana curve to try and goad people into making me draw cards more often with gearhulk. Hehehe...
As a side note, every time I drew Mikaeus, the Unhallowed, I had to ask myself "Would I rather have this be an arcbound ravager?". Almost every time I would say yes. The card is still good enough to run, but I simply haven't run into enough scenarios where I had time to cast it. Usually I drew it late and by then I had Marionette Master and a ton of artifacts + a scrap mastery or panharmonicon and simply needed someone dead.
Speaking of marionette, I've noticed from experience that you would generally rather have a card that can focus someone down rather than efficiently deal a set amount of damage to each opponent. The reason is that people never have equal board states and so you want to get the person that is most capable of stopping you. Hence, I added a Vicious Shadows that still requires testing. Purphoros is still good enough to run because of his indestructiblity and because he can be dropped earlier than other wincons giving you a solid stream of damage over time. He is also still insane with grave loops.

A basic HOW TO PLAY

I have too many cards that "only work in late game" so Wake the Dead was cut in favor of another mana source. The only reason it was in the list in the first place was because I wanted to try out the card, but decks that self-mill are more suited to running the card.
Panharmonicon does nothing. Spellskite saves Marchesa for practically free.
Notion Thief is a Grim Haruspex for more consistent draw.
Terminate should become Chaos Warp.
I would like another sac outlet but first I would need to test other factors. Such as if I even need a kill capsule in my trinket package?

I actually could see myself cutting the card at some point very soon. I'm already doing a decent job of trimming the curve, and cutting a 9 drop as well as my nonartifact 7 drop (since marionette master appears to be better) could do a lot toward that end.
Here is my list of cards I want to find room to add
Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas (Important because he digs 5 each turn and fishes for our "missing synergy pieces". Also animates big mana rocks to protect them)
Time Sieve (Can go infinite)
Arcbound Reclaimer (artifact recursion that has MODULAR)
Faerie Mechanist (Glint-nest crane is cheaper and has a better effect but it can't be sacced or looped as effectively)
Mirrorworks (This card should be stupid because it triggers on etb. Forgemaster should love it)
Also need to remember to add an Opal Palace and a Command Tower. I'll move one of my Sensei's Divining Tops in because of how badly the deck would like one.

Mid-Tier: Marchesa Aggro Rose Asmadi Get Dire Tymna Ikra Woke Women Tiana Aura Angel Ruric Thar SMASH Smasher Kraum Mana Positivity Zur Slides
Filthy Casual: WUBRG Jodah WUBRG WUBRG Fatties WUBRG Gahiji Vigilant Vengeance Ezuri Mysterious Morphs
Stalking Vengeance is cut for the sake of my mana curve. Marionette Master does the job better. Command Tower and Opal Palace added. Testing Arcbound Reclaimer in Phyrexian Reclamation's place, however the latter has never really been bad in previous decks. I just want to see if the card type + modular is worth the extra cost. However, that is not a final change.
Capsule swapped for Top. Trinket removal is nice, library manipulation nicer.

(Also known as Xenphire)
The other weakest card is Unstable Obelisk (cut for Talisman of Dominance and then find another cut for Thran Dynamo), but I'm currently just using it to see if I need an out if Rest in Peace shows up. Also, that Terminate should be a Chaos Warp for that reason.
Also, Krark-clan Ironworks is a mana ability. I used this to stop a Word of Seizing yesterday.

Time Seive with Sword of the Meek and some token generation would help this deck out tremendously. There is also Ugin's Nexus + Prototype Portal + and artifact sac outlet for infinite turns as well.
So many things that can be done here when playing with the artifacts.
Guess I need to pick up an Ugin's Nexus.

Sharding Sphinx is a possible inclusion.
I... also realized the existence of Storage Matrix.

So, I got targeted by Emrakul, the Promised End twice..

+ Carrion Feeder.
Next up is room for the card that is almost always run in these decks: Mikaeus, the Unhallowed. Secondly, I'll probably find a spot for Time Sieve somewhere....

Mid-Tier: Marchesa Aggro Rose Asmadi Get Dire Tymna Ikra Woke Women Tiana Aura Angel Ruric Thar SMASH Smasher Kraum Mana Positivity Zur Slides
Filthy Casual: WUBRG Jodah WUBRG WUBRG Fatties WUBRG Gahiji Vigilant Vengeance Ezuri Mysterious Morphs
