I did play some games with this list but made the change of sifter to veil and this list is very strong. I haven't hit Veil yet because usually I have already won or very close to it. I almost wonder if Veil or flip lilly in your list shouldn't be another mana dork or a removal creature of some sort.
I dont have either Lilliana in my list at the moment. I've been pretty solid on removal creatures and mana dorks, but I dont doubt another would help! I've yet to truely test Sifter so I cant say, but I also am looking at adding in Smokestack and Void Winnower, as well as more mana dorks. I should get some games in Thursday so I'll update it here with my findings! Thanks D3ad for the compliments and for your help!
While Necroplasm was going to take Wurm's spot, until I test Sifter and pals further, Shaman takes the spot as a mana dork that produces mana of any color, and can become a win condition in its own right, if the game goes on long enough! We'll see how it performs in any case.
Wurm, as I've discussed in other posts, looks incredible, but rarely pans out unless you're in a heavy token meta, and even then, he's not your tutor target usually. Just a decent topdeck. He also doesnt help if your opponents can pump their tokens, which usually they can or will.
Map for Scrying is an obvious choice, since we have better things to be doing turn 1 now, this gives us a better curve play.
Sifter.. ahh, always the bridesmaid, never the bride, comes out for a tech piece against tokens.
This last one is going to be controversial, but removing animate dead for something that nets us more dudes in the long run is what I prefer. Animate works better on an empty board, and can grab other things, but Victimize works well with Meren's ability and allows us to be net 3 creatures at the end of the turn, rather than just 2. I've come across situations in EVERY game I've played where I could use more dudes on the board, and hopefully this helps!
Hi there and thanks for posting this, your list is great
I really want to build a Meren deck and I really like your approach with value/stax elements. Currently, Im having trouble finding suitable win conditions, since my playgroup doesnt allow infinite combos, (so no triskellion combo etc). They do allow for "fixed" kill the table combos, like Jarad/Lord of Extinction, since its not infinite damage per say. Do you have any suggestions for alternative win conditions perhaps? Or is it simply a matter of maindecking more finishers like Grave Titan etc?

Not allowing infinites really hinders some archetypes and color combinations substantially, which I think is unfair. If Lord/Jarad is viable, infinites should be too, and even moreso since Mike/Trike isnt "infinite", since you choose how much damage to deal and where
Yeah I see what you mean. Still, shennanigans with living death and koko could be potent enough. Thanks
You're welcome! Sorry if I ranted a bit about infinite combos. I find it's much like counterspells, where it feels bad to get your stuff countered, but if it gets killed like via doom blade before it gets to do anything, it's less of a feel-bad moment, but the same thing happens. Mike+Trike is essentially the same as Avenger+Craterhoof, but you dont need to attack!
I tried it for a while, but found it's very difficult to win without Craterhoof/Living Death shenanigans, as looping Koko and friends takes alot of effort and requires the opponents to not run ample removal or have their own faster wincons. I've definitely won with it a few games, it's just difficult, especially against non-creature decks and lifegain decks.
Someone stole mine, I found another. So there! However, I worry about running too few basics, particularly since I sometimes play at tables with MLD, Mass Non-basic hate, and general non-basic hate, so I will test to see.
I also highly look forward to including Eldritch Evolution from the new set, and will chase after a foil immediately! Nothing else I really can say is really powerful enough to warrant testing or an auto-inclusion.
This was a necessary evil for us to be able to combo out and win. Pox was used alongside Koko and Gary to help us reduce life totals and impact the board in a real way to break a combo/aggro player's lead. While it may come back in, as I LOVE it to make everyone groan and disrupt the board, we need Riftsweeper to grab back key exiled [creature] cards.
I'm eyeing a few others as potential cuts, like Wurmcoil for Void Winnower. Wurmcoil is just a great way to keep a board post wrath, as well as recover life so we arent such a juicy target.
Hello there fellow Meren enthusiast
1. Because you run 0 board wipes, what happens in games where you are at a disadvantage? Wouldn't Toxic Deluge or Damnation be a good addition?
2. By running only 33 lands, do you ever have probems landing yur land drops? Or is purposeful that the mana dorks act as a slower land and when they die, they add counters to Meren?
3. is Miren, the Moaning Well worth a slot? Its a land that acts as a sac outlet, albeit a rather expensive one
4. Wake the dead has been amazing for me

4. Wake the dead has been amazing for me
1. I tend to win most of my games and the ones I dont, the lack of a dedicated wipe wouldnt have helped. It's always a consideration, however.
2. Nope. I run about 10 mana dorks plus a few rocks. And yep!
3. Too expensive of an activation cost, and there are better sac outlets.
4. It's been a dead slot for me for months, so it was cut ages ago. I highly recommend it to those looking to quickly ramp into exp counters. I tend to only need 4-6.
If I could run one wrath, it would be Living Death. Extra fun with a sac outlet out (sac the board and bring them all back). You of course should be concerned with contents of the opponents yard and any instant speed yard hate.

That's exactly it, the hate. Plus I tend to not keep my yard stocked with creatures worth Living Deathing. Just mana dorks most of the time lol
I think death cloud us my only board wipe, but I don't usually need to cast it. The only games I've found myself overrun are where a drew completely dead, as in zero removal spells. The standard suite of spot removal creatures has almost always been sufficient
Speaking to the no combos thing, I left mike out solely because I was trying to avoid easy combos he enables. Aside from scoops to possessed portal, I generally win with wurmcoil/woodfall beats or gray merchant triggers. With a stax deck wincons don't really matter as much, if it takes a long time to win its okay because no one creatures to fight back with
Makes me sad to drop Disciple, but we run so few high power creatures anymore. He doesnt net us enough value anymore to be of any benefit. In most instances, he is a sac outlet to gain 1-2 life and draw 1-2 cards. He is replaced by a similar effect: Evolution allows us to get something we need rather than just a card or two.
Next, Hypnotist. His CMC is really what hurts his inclusion. By the time I can cast him and really benefit from him, I should be winning in other ways. He's been a dead card most of the time. while I dont doubt he could return, he is incredibly expensive resource-wise and seems winmore. Yisan replaces him as a "must answer" card that is also resource intensive, but comes down much earlier and will tutor us first mana dorks, then removal, then soon real threats. He is in the testing phase, so we'll see how he fares!
Yeah, the idea with Hypnotist was to wreck the hand of someone who could possibly stop me. He may come back. Just an expensive body for the effect. Yisan I hope does well in Disciple's place.. he also seems super slow but others seem to love him so I figure I'll try him out a few times to see how he fares. He at least passes the <4cmc test so he isnt fighting too hard on being cast later like Hypnotist.
Hurts me to do, but Wurmcoil, as he is, is solid here. He is, but I played a few games the other day and not hitting my mana dorks until 5-6 cards in with the new mulligan rules really hurts, and prevents us from getting off the ground at all. So as it stands, Wurmcoil isn't as necessary to the gameplan.
So I know most of what I do with these topics is merely post updates and slowly work on the OP, but I'd like to also just talk about my philosophy and where the deck is going for a minute as well.
I've gotten two games in lately with Meren, one where I never really got off the ground, and the other where I was one turn away from victory, when a lucky topdeck Spellbomb exiled my Mike/Trike/Ooze when I had Animate Dead in hand (it was a standin while my Evolution was in the mail)
In both games, it was a rough go early on. In game 2 I did have an early mana dork, but finding a sac outlet was difficult. Game one I had a solid hand, but no mana dorks or enablers for Meren to start generating counters. The new mulligan rule can be rough! It's why I added in Llanowar Elves, as another slight bump in % to getting some early ramp.
I'm very happy with the deck as it is. I would like to test more cards, like poor Catacomb Sifter, Smokestack, Void Winnower, more tutors, etc. One thing that I could make happen is removing Gary/Kokopuffs, along with things like Grave Pact/Dictate of Erebos (keeping Attrition since it is better in many situations), to test said cards. My fear is losing my combo pieces, and then not having my backup plan of Gary/Koko puffs, or losing the board control I can gain with Grave Pact or Dictate. While I can operate fine without them, they certainly help against non-token decks with resilient creatures.
Tainted Wood can occasionally be bad. I'm keeping it as a maybe for now, in case I need more dual lands, and I do, but I also want to be careful of Ruination and Back to Basics
Another great swap, I myself have not finished buying all the cards so I have not had a real "test" in a while. But I enjoy each and every post on here.

Well thanks Jeff!
My next plans are to cut cards like Grave Pact and Dictate of Erebos, which really hurts to do. Ideally to add Merciless Executioner and Chord of Calling. Why? Pact and Dictate only really help Gary and Nykthos, as I can usually cycle a Fleshbag Marauder enough to wipe the board, and if I need to wipe a ton of creatures, usually I do so via Necroplasm, Pernicious Deed, etc. They clog my hands, and I'd rather double down on the Fleshbag, and then add a really killer, but somewhat expensive, tutor in the deck like Chord.
This wont win me any fans, but since we can handle most boards now, we no longer need Grave Pact and Dictate. Tokens can be dealt with by other means, and if the board is that big, I can find room for a Toxic Deluge. Merciless Executioner comes in to double up with Fleshbag Marauder, as looping them a few times typically deals with the board.
Fyndhorn elves and Void Winnower replace Gary and Kokopuffs. We dont need to focus on these slow wincons anymore. Animate Dead enters to help us loop key creatures more.
Nice additions to make the deck faster, I will hold off on these additions because I personally like the slow grind and board control aspect of this deck (also the reason why I chose Meren over Jarad).
Will you be running Slum Reaper? Less efficient but I believe it can be for even more redundancy.
