I was hesitant to build this deck mostly because it is so focused on one thing but after thinking about it a bit it seems like it could be some fun. The Shadowborn Apostles happened to be relatively cheap right now in comparison to what I have seen them at before in the past. I honestly had not ever liked the concept of the Shadowborns but in a deck like this it seems really brutal because of all of Athreos's triggers.
This is not an original idea. I saw the concept a while back and its just slowly been sort of kicking around in my head since then. I cant remember who showed me a list similar though offhand.
In case you haven't picked up on it yet, the idea behind this deck is to absolutely abuse Shadowborn Apostles. Honestly, searching for the demons isn't even that much of the focus here so I only have three targets at the moment. The value I get off of their deaths is the target. The deck has a good amount of abuse and mass reanimation involved as well. It seems like it is an interesting concept at least.
You will notice that this is an all out attack based deck. There is little for terms of answers in here so you will notice a lack of things like wraths and direct answers. I chose to build in this direction because I felt that such a large portion of the deck is being consumed by the Shadowborn Apostles that I did not want the remaining slots to be drawn and not have interaction with the rest of the deck. This is a risky way to play but due to the quantity of cards I needed to devote to the engine portion of my deck I decided it was the way to go with it.
You will notice I am running a low land count. The mana cost of every single card in this deck only add up to being 137 mana to cast literally the whole deck so assuming I were to find my Ad Nausium I should be able to without much issue draw 20-30 cards at a time without much of an issue. 1.38 mana is the average mana per card on costs if you divide the 137 mana by the 99 cards in deck.
As of right now, I dont know where I need to be on some counts yet. The shadowborn count is largely an uncertainty to me yet. Still, I am really looking forward to seeing what something like this might be able to do. The overall cost of cards here is quite low and most of the cards with any sort of cost to them are staples I own anyways.
So, I got most of the cards for this deck in and I am trying to get it put together for some games. I am trying to keep my Shadowborn count where I need it but I dont have any testing in with it yet either so it is hard to tell what number I really need to work with. I suspect that the deck will probably mulligan fairly well though as I dont really feel like I need to keep any count of Shadowborn in my opening hand which is nice.
CUTS: Maw of the Obzedat I suspect that outside of the turn I try pushing for the win the value from this sac outlet will be largely irrelevant.
3 Shadowborn Apostle trying to key in on the count that I will be wanting to run yet.
ADDS: Oblation it gives me at least one card in deck that I can tutor for in case of something like Rest in Peace / Grafdigger's Cage which are slightly on the rise in my meta right now. Expedition Map tutor for big mana. Coffers / Nykthos should both be really huge mana producers here. Ancestor's Prophet gives me something I can use to recover some life. Some of the draw sort of hurts and it gives me something to do with the Shadowborns if I get some sitting about in play. Enlightened Tutor it can hit a lot of impressive cards in deck. It just seemed like good versatility to have onhand.
Offhand, some sort of hate card to stop the deck from turning over would be my primary concern right now. I might need to add a few more answers yet but I want to keep the numbers down and keep it primarily focused on turning the engine over.
EDIT: one other thought I guess..
Phyrexian Tower -> Reliquary Tower I don't want people to let me recover my Shadowborns to just try to flood me and make me discard them. I dont really suspect that the tower is going to be so productive here anyways.
I run 33 shadowborn apostles int my version of this concept. I've only whiffed once on thrumming stone in 8 months of play, so I've been rather satisfied with the 1:3 count.
In a multiplayer format where sometimes it seems that people are in a race to see who can combo off, I found that Edgewalker with Altar of Dementia and a shadowborn apostle and maybe a flash enabler like Vedalken Orrery is a great way to diplomatically mill a player who is about to make everyone else lose the game. I just need Athreos out and then I can say to another player, "If you don't have any way to stop the guy after me from comboing off next turn, I can pick you for the Athreos triggers and all I need you to do is to never pay three life so I can mill that guy out by sacrificing Shadowborn Apostles to my Alter of Dementia and recasting them for free off of edgewalker."
I know it is very card specific, but all the players know it's a combo that only works if I have someone's cooperation and therefore pretty easy to assemble with tutors without many people caring. Then all of a sudden I have a kill switch that makse everyone play nice.
So I've been tinkering with a deck list very similar to yours, and I've noticed while Dark Prophecy is good, it's probably the deck greatest vulnerability. Have you thought about swapping it out for something a little bit more on the "steady" side similar to Dark Confidant, or Dark Tutelage. In addition, I will second the strength of Phyrexian Altar in the deck. Having the Altar out and a Shadowborn with Teysa, Rotlung, or Xathrid pretty much guarantees your target must pay that 3 life or a flood of tokens will overwhelm them.

My List of Current Decks: -Modern- WMartyrProcB BBurnR -Commander-
Sorry for the delay everyone. I was sort of up in the air for a while if this deck was going to stay together or not. The nature of this deck is very much focused on going off and I have recieved quite a few complaints about the deck because in essence it is a combo deck even though in most cases there are no infinites (ok there are a few infinite options).
I played two more games of it last night and I just love the feel of it and its hilarious that I am playing human cleric tribal essentially. This deck so far has something like an 85% win ratio as I can only think of one loss I have had and that was to an opposing really fast victory as well as me getting land screwed for a few turns.
As of right now, I plan to keep this deck together but it is sort of the kind of deck that seems to draw the ire of most of the people in my group so I don't intend to run it all that frequently as they have voiced several complaints about how it functions so far. It is, in essence an all gas deck looking to assemble a particular board state in a way that resembles combo... ok its combo.

I considered Altar of Dementia as a sac outlet but I just didn't really feel as though I would ever be able to mill someone else out. I did consider adding it to target myself and mill into more shadowborns to rez but even then it felt a little narrow. It is possible as a sac outlet but I dont know how much I need it right now. Most of my creatures are very small so it takes a lot of sacs to really add up with it.
Both seem like good additions to the deck. I could probably find a slot for Rector but not sure what I would drop for Remembrance...
Interesting suggestions. I will see if I cant make room for them. The shadowborn package takes up a TON of room in the list so it can get a little tricky to make room. Still, I think Athreos + Rememberance would be extremely annoying lol. I like it.

Dark Prophecy interesting, I had not picked up on that yet but I have also only seen it like once. Blood Artist effects also negate it but I can see reason to possibly not run it based on this. I really need to go back through my list and make some adjustments based on my game time so far. I really have enjoyed this list but it needs a few tweaks that I have so far not made to the deck.

I have officially moved to MTGNexus. I just wanted to let people know as my response time to salvation decks being bumped is very hit or miss.
Hi everyone! I'd like to suggest Mastery of the Unseen for this deck (in my version of this concept, I've replaced Ancestor's Prophet). The activated ability is a bit expensive, but it fits perfectly with the Apostles while mitigating the deck's different sources of lifeloss.
Hey ISB, any thoughts on Exsanguinate and Debt to the Deathless for this deck? After a few games in my meta, I've found that I run out of things to do. My playgroup plays a lot of personal hexproof, rendering my Blood Artist effects pretty useless Also, Rally the Ancestors has really frustrated me a couple of games... My opponents tend to pop my sac outlets asap and while I have a plenty (including the apostles themselves), if I'm not able to draw into a better one, I end up just passing turn (UHG the worst when you've been controlling the table's tempo the entire game).
Again I am neglecting this list lol. I have a few small changes in my actual list such as I don't think I am running Scroll Rack offhand but I cant recall what I have in its place. My current goal is to get more testing in with Ojutai who has one game in so far is all. Once I get more testing in with her I plan to shift back to testing some of my changes in my Rebels / Toshi. When I get arround to that I then need to circle back with Jenara and this list lol. Its funny because I think Daretti is just on the way back backburner at the time because he has like no recent changes in how he functions at all.
I have been thinking about possibly including Greed and Null Profusion in this deck as well as I could see both of those cards having very good results in a deck like this. I really need to sit down and look at my list and make some adjustments but I just never get around to it lol. Remembrance is also on my list of interested cards that I will need to try to make some room for if I can.

It is a thought. Its really sort of expensive being 5 mana per card drawn so I would probably be more likely to go with an aggressive card drawing mechanic like Greed over it but its nice to have the lifegain on it. Its just so much mana to get them spitting out I guess. It really comes down to how valuable you find the lifegain I suspect as I think we can easier draw cards and play them than that.

I considered them early on with mana alters but I figured that sort of banked on me getting mana alters + shadowborns sort of set up for it to really work. I think I would hesitate to do so just because in general I think if you are set up to the point where you could profitably cast them you have so many other ways of winning at that point so they seem like dead cards to me most of the other time.
I've also been toying with the idea of Fallen Angel...
I have actually considered moving to a few more creature sac outlets. I might put more testing into Cartel Aristocrat who functions as a cheap and easy to cast / recur sac outlets. I think if you are going to actually consider Fallen Angel the better move is Maw of the Obzedat. I almost ran the Maw but I cut it at the last second before I put my list together. Creature sac outlets rez with the mass reanimation though which is uesful in a lot of cases.
i see 18 cards you can ditch for stall or infinite combos etc.
Viscera Seer, Mirror Entity, Teysa, Orzhov Scion, Balthor the Defiled, Falkenrath Noble(zulaport cutthroat), Ancestor's Prophet, Expedition Map, Skullclamp, Scroll Rack, Ashnod's Altar(phyrexian alter would be better), Vedalken Orrery, Lifeline, Sadistic Hypnotist, Enlightened Tutor, Rally the Ancestors, Oblation, Ad Nauseam(need mana rocks for this to work), scrubland(too much money replace with Maze of ith), Harvester of souls, and Rune scarred demon. I'd add more mana rocks a few white cards like Grand Abolisher etc and defense grid for sure badly need stall and safety cards. I'd focus the deck to win in 1 of 3 ways. 1. sac for big nasties. 2. sac for major token gen(hilarity ensues). 3. infinite combos like mike and trike
I wanted to dust off my list for this deck as I had noticed there was some fairly sweet upgrades since last I played this list. I don't know if I will rebuild it or not but I wanted to update my list either way.
Phyrexian Arena -> Minions' Murmurs - I felt like I could draw as much or more faster with this swap. Arena is ok but when it comes to these decks that swarm little guys the murmers has seemed fairly good in my vamp deck.
Sadistic Hypnotist -> Krav, the Unredeemed - swapping one sac outlet for another. I like that Krav is tutorable as a demon and the Hypnotist had always seemed a little odd given the sorcery speed sac. Krav does take mana but its one mana and you can sac any number of creatures for that one mana.
Vedalken Orrery -> Kagemaro, First to Suffer - I have been moving away from Orrery more of late. Its a good card but it dies too fast for me too often. I don't see anything that necessarily needs flash for it in this deck.
Rune-Scarred Demon -> Razaketh, the Foulblooded - its a similar cost and use but Razaketh has reusability and the fact that he is a sac outlet on his side. This seems like an improvement for me in that rune scarred is often a better clone target for blue decks and the fact that this deck kind of swarms lends itself to Razaketh a bit better.
Scroll Rack -> Battletide Alchemist - I wanted to add the Alchemist because I think its really cool synergy for this deck. I am not really sure what I was doing with Scroll Rack in this deck before given it doesn't seem like I have that much for hand filling (no land tax) and my shuffles don't seem enough.
Expedition Map -> Mentor of the Meek - the map is good and the power of Nykthos / Coffers is nice but overall I think I want to push up my draw a bit more right now.
1 Swamp -> Westvale Abbey - I like the utility of the abbey. Its a card I just really think its cool.
I have a number of cards I also thought were maybe worth considering or close too so I will try to put some new cards I am considering in the OP. Overall, the quality in the demons selection has really gone up since I last played this deck. With some of my recent testing of Teshar I would also love to get Bygone Bishop in here at some point given some of the big mana options this deck has. I still felt that Mentor of the Meek might be better given the tokens and rez options to not cast the apostles though.
Still fumbling things a bit. I decided I would spin the deck back up for a bit of fun in part because I already own essentially everything in it. Looking back on my build, I wanted to make it feel like less of a gimmick and make it play a little more consistently. From when I used to play this deck there was an issue where sometimes all I was drawing was apostles and land and I wanted to diversify it a little as well as add better draw. I realized that the count of apostles I was running seemed to be me trying to defend Thrumming Stone more than I probably should. It is just one card in the deck and its not even what I would necessarily tutor for so I think lowering my count some and adding a little more utility makes sense. There is also the issue with Thrumming Stone that cards will cluster regardless of counts and the chances of whiffing are still very real.
1 Shadowborn Apostle -> Dusk // Dawn lowering apostle count for answer / mass rez. I like how this wrath dodges my tokens and a lot of my utility / apostles and then it gives me a big rez effect to reload the apostles.
Lifeline -> Sol Ring Lifeline is cool but it has some issues with Athreos in that if he is in play, it really screws up this card. With some of the addition of draw I think it makes sense to try to make room for this even though its not easy to play appostles with it, I think it enables a lot of other things.
Isolated Chapel -> Fetid Heath I have had more experience playing landbases that are unbalanced and this should be an improvement.
1 Swamp -> Crypt of Agadeem given the number of creatures and how they are sort of expendable I think this gives me another means to a big cluster of mana.
My hope and goal is to turn this a little away from being a glass cannon style combo deck and have it play a little more consistently as well as having interaction and plans other than trying to go off as fast as possible.

28/29 Apostles is what I usually end up at whenever I try to take these guys out in anything from 1 to 4 color shell. Any more feels way too crowded with not enough going on around them.

I've not tried ancestor's prophet, but I've used shieldmage elder for a similar role with some success. With the draw engines such as dark prophecy or mana engines like carnival of souls, the life gain is probably better than damage prevention.
On the topic of answers; mine is more of a theme deck, so I'm using cards like gallows at willow hill and devout chaplain.
phyrexian altar is a great card in this deck, as one sacrificed apostle will pay for the next. phyrexian reclamation recurs creatures like edgewalker, which no sane opponent will let you return with Athreos. Crypt of Agadeem has always been a second cabal coffers for me. I'd rather use immortal servitude than rally the ancestors, but the two are equivalent.
