Hi, currently running a Daretti, Scap Savant deck, that I'm looking to turn into a Mishra deck, what are y'alls thoughts on the New Daretti, Dack Fayden, and the Kaladesh Planeswalkers?
what are y'alls thoughts on the New Daretti, Dack Fayden, and the Kaladesh Planeswalkers?
Personally, I like Dack and the new Daretti the best. Dack is really good at stealing anything with lattice out, as well as card filtering a turn faster than old Daretti, which allows you to do a T3 Dack into a T4 Daretti to put a dumb thing out onto the battlefield. The new Daretti is really good for grinding out the early-mid stages of the game, and can keep threats to you at bay with his minus.
From Kaladesh, I'm not that much of a fan of either Chandra. The intro deck one is just bad, and the other, while good, feels like a worse JTMS, where while it will win a game if left unchecked, it paints a big target on your head and is easily removed. I feel the same about Saheeli, although she is a bit better and I am a fan of it in combo oriented builds where you can just turbo out your forge disk lattice once you ult her. Cloning a bunch of Wurmcoils is fun, too.
My apologies everyone, been on vacation the last week and been spending a lot of time with my daughter; I will be posting a Kaladesh review hopefully in the next day or two!
With the new cards from Kaldesh I feel like i can finanlly make Mishra how I always wanted. Here is my deck list: Mishra's Machinations.
I'm trying to keep it under $200 and avoiding infinite combos. Would love some advice on card selections. Basic stragety is to stick a Reckless Fireweaver or Marionette Master then start looping artifacts from the graveyard.
Thanks for this article, it has been very helpful. As a prolific magic online commander player, I have over 40 decks and I am always looking for new and interesting takes on mechanics. I've always been curious about Mishra, but never delved into how/what behind him. So took the brave step and blasted out a couple of builds. I never normally read articles, but this time I took great care into reading everything you had to say.
Too be honest I've had marginal success with it, but as you point out I'm more interested in doing what other people are not doing.
I like to brew so after playing a few times with basically your build, I decided to go with a more storm type build, but not the one you have listed in the OP, because I always play multi-player, so Tendrils of Agony, etc is not good enough. The times that I did have success is when I had Neither Void with mass bounce. So ran with this and gone with cheap mana artifacts, lots of mass draw like Wheel of Fortune, Windfall, Time Twister, etc and play mass bounce in the form of Devastation Tide, Crush of Tentacles, Kederekt Leviathan and Cyclonic Rift. The idea is that later in the game, you can mass bounce and basically play out everything again. You still get incredible value with Possibility Storm, Blood Funnel and if you drop Neither Void it usually locks the game after a big bounce.
Anyway I'll post my list after I've tweaked and played it a bit more, but again thanks heaps for explaining all the mechanics and useful cards for getting value

Nice budget list man! Hows Marionette Master working for you? that card seems like it has excellent potential in this deck with a solid sacrifice engine backing it.
Been testing the original OP list, and gotta say I'm absolutely loving it Looking at that list, is there anything major thats been discussed as worth removing? Already swapped Guardian Beast w Saheeli... mostly because its the one card I couldn't get in the UK
Saheeli is a great addition, and honestly, guardian beast is very hit or miss. I run him because my meta now builds their decks knowing i will be bringing mishra with me every edh night, so i need as much protection as i can, if he isnt your 'main' deck, guardian beast isnt AS necessary, or could even be a dead draw.

really happy to hear you have had some success with the deck! Nether Void with mass bounce is DIIIIIRTY! haha, sounds like you have a really strong synergy set up in your build
Here is my set review for Kaladesh for Mishra. Talk about a dream set! Since there are so many cards worthy of use, I am going to omit cards I see completely no value in (stuff like the red gearhulk). I apologize for the REALLY late set review, but my daughter comes first - little girl has taken over my life, what can I say?
Blue
Torrential Gearhulk - honestly, overpriced for its effect. I get that its supposed to be a beater as well, but its ability is what i want, and i cant pay 6 for it in the storm build, so i will be passing on this guy.
Insidious Will - not necessarily a great Mishra card, but i love flexible counterspells.
Paradoxical Outcome - HOLY CRAP I LOVE THIS CARD FOR STORM MISHRA! Get your cheap spell cost to 0, bounce all your mana rocks and useful etb effects, then start again while drawing a ton of cards? Bonus points if you have a draw engine down. LOVE this card.
Padeem, Consul of Innovation - Protects our stuff, draws us cards, artificer typing. I will buy, I will use, I will win. <3
Saheeli's Artistry - really expensive for a clone effect, but I do like its potential.
Glint-Nest Crane - 1/3 flier that draws you an artifact of your choice from the top 4 cards. With a good artifact ratio, this card improves in value
Red
Madcap Experiment - Artifact cascade for 4 mana and a little life? HELL YA! Add in a dash of Vampiric Tutor or Long-Term plans for best results!
Fateful Showdown - Great card for a Nekusar or maybe even a storm Mishra list. I will try to trade for a copy and test it, but I am not in a dire rush for this one.
Noxious Gearhulk - Could be valuable in a creature centric build, i love nekrataal, but hes a bit pricey, so if you are trying to fill out 100 cards with limited resources, maybe this guy is worth a pick up
Marionette Master - Talk about crazy power potential! I love this card and will be playtesting. It can be abused with an engine, it can be used as a board wipe deterrent in a creature deck, can be used as a token gen. One of the highlights of the set in my eyes for Mishra!
Syndicate Trafficker - Two drop artifact sacrifice engine that grows over time. Could be VERY powerful in a creature based build, or any deck that needs a sacrifice engine.
Gonti, Lord of Luxury - Not a fan. His ability is a very limited Praetor's Grasp, which I find conditionally useful already.
Underhanded Designs - Adds a dash of extort to your deck, not terrible, though I wish it wasn't pay to activate and cost like 3 or 4 mana instead.
Colorless
Let me preface this list that I do NOT care for the vehicles / crew mechanic for the most part. I would rather play creatures that do not require me to have others on the board to use them as attacking creatures. It strikes me as wildly inefficient considering we have every artifact ever printed at our disposal. End rant.
Cultivator's Caravan - An exception to my rule to start us off. I like that its a fair costed mana rock that has uses in the late game.
Aetherworks Marvel - Could have value, simply because its reusable. Perhaps in a deck running solid sacrifice engines?
Metalwork Colossus - SO close. If it didnt have that nasty 'noncreature' clause in there, I would've given this one a stamp of approval. Also, his lack of trample hurts his value in my eyes.
Electrostatic Pummeler - if you go HARD on energy counteres, this guy has some real potential for explosive damage.
Ghirapur Orrery - not a bad idea for a storm variant. Allows you to dump lands from your hand rather than get clogged up by them, and when you hit 0 cards early on, you can replenish faster.
Panharmonicon - Mostly a miss for me. That said, could have uses in a deck full of ETB effects.
Aetherflux Reservoir - I will be playtesting this in storm. 4 mana isn't impossible to get out early, and with a card casting loop, this could be a new win condition for the deck - especially in multiplayer
Foundry Inspector - Wish he was a 2 drop, but still may earn a slot in a storm variant.
Multicolor
Saheeli Rai - 3CC planeswalker that Scrys, copies artifacts, and can tooth and nail our winning combo straight onto the battlefield? YES!c
Contraband Kingpin - Not to be underestimated, could be very useful in cost efficient decks that rely on playing lots of little artifacts.
Lands
Inventors' Fair - HOLY CRAP! A land that tutors for artifacts? Delicious.
WHEW! what a long one! I hope this is of value to folks!
Cheers really happy to hear you have had some success with the deck! Nether Void with mass bounce is DIIIIIRTY! haha, sounds like you have a really strong synergy set up in your build
Well after a full weekend of playing various builds I actually settled on a more traditional build, but still with big differences.
I also have a The Reaper King, 5 color artifact deck, so have lots of experience with using/abusing Unwinding Clock. So why not abuse it with Mishra right!?
The basic idea is to mana rock ramp fairly quickly and best case scenario is get into Unwinding Clock and you can flash in cards with Leyline of Anticipation, Vedalken Orrery and Shimmer Myr, for pseudo extra turns, one of the most powerful multiplayer strategies.
I'm using Ice Cave to full potential to try and knock out what opponents are doing and of course go under the radar with Mishra ability and minor Stax to make things fairly uncounterable for myself.
I use Static Orb and Winters Orb to lock down opponents being able to do too much each turn and if with Neither Void simply GG. With Unwinding Clock of course you don't have the same type of lock down. Plus I play Clock of Omens which allows to tap Static Orb or Winter Orb to nullify lock down for myself. If you've never played Static Orb, its unbelievable in a Stax strategy. Think of it as a Crawl Space, Winter Orb and Ensnaring Bridge rolled into one. OK, maybe not completely Ensnaring Bridge, but your opponents really have to think if they want to cast spells or attack with a couple creatures. If they are just attacking with creatures, you're going to out pace them to answers fairly quickly.
I've noticed that you don't play with Mana Vault and Grim Monolith. It might be a budget thing, but I've played over 10,000 Commander games online and so competitive play demands fast mana. If play is more casual then you tend to play more lands and less fast mana. I've noticed with 38 land in your build probably you're leaning towards games that last a bit longer than pure competitive turn 4 its over, which I'm trying to "compete" with, at least in some games.
With this in mind I'm geared towards faster starts and have basically taken out all the grind and graveyard value cards. No Myr Retriever, Junk Diver or Scrap Mastery type cards. It makes Daretti, Scrap Savant slightly worse, but still good enough. You're left open to board wipes being worse for yourself, but this is the trade in for having a more linear strategy.
My only other subtleties to point out is that there is real value and certainty in playing with only two of particular card types or cards that are similar, so that there is less chaos for you when deciding what to do under Possibility Storm.
So two instants Cyclonic Rift and Vamperic Tutor. It means that you know exactly what you're casting. Same for Planeswalkers; Daretti and Tezzeret, and only 4 sorceries, Demonic Tutor, Grim Tutor, Praetor's Grasp and Vandalblast. I don't play All is Dust, Chain Reaction or Scrap Mastery for the reason that although powerful spells, they are only good situationally. Its nice to know that if you cast Vandalblast that you are going to get a tutor effect.
I don't play Blood Funnel, its just not good enough in my build. My build would seem to be light on "Bomb" artifacts, but I come from an old school that if you have control, you only need the one win condition. Either the classic Darksteel Forge+Nevinyrral's Disk or actually Memnarch+Unwinding Clock, basically stealing all the big threats and closing the game that way. Planar Portal is incredible in an Unwinding Clock build with flash. You can actually build up the ability to flash in your cards, by spending the first tutor for a Shimmering Myr. As I say this is one of the most broken/fun things you can do in multiple player Commander. I have many decks built around this strategy; Yisan, Reaper King, Patron of the Orochi, Slivers, Captain Sisay, Horde of Notions, with sub themes also in Gaddock Teeg, Ezuri and Sachi, Daughter of Seshiro. Basically what I'm saying is that its tried and true and I know how to play it probably better than any Magic Online Commander player. Sounds arrogant, but know the community well.
Anyway a pleasure to finally get Mishra under the belt and happy artifact hunting to all those wanting to try him out!

That seems like a really strong synergy. I myself like to abuse unwinding clock, but normally as a way to reactivate my board destruction combo every time anyone tries to play anything, which basically ends the game.
I'm using Ice Cave to full potential to try and knock out what opponents are doing and of course go under the radar with Mishra ability and minor Stax to make things fairly uncounterable for myself.
god i love that card, i cut it from my own build at the request of my local playgroup. I highly recommend it if you really want to flex Mishra's might!

I really need to grab a copy of static orb, it sounds down right oppressive, could be a great fit in my stax build

So I already run those cards in Mishra, though not in my 75% build. Budget is of little concern to me, if i want a card, I make an effort to acquire it. Cards only really become a long term desire if they hit triple digit prices. That said, I should definitely look into ways to make my build faster, a swift stax deck is something to be feared.
I don't play Blood Funnel, its just not good enough in my build.
This card is very conditional, and i will likely drop it from my 75% build in the near future. It only really shines in my all out storm variant.
Sorry it took so long to reply, haha, you wrote a serious novel of info there! Really glad you are having success with Mishra and looking forward to hearing more about what works and what doesnt work for you!
Wait, a few people? You know other mishra players?
Seriously though, shes just a combo piece in a modified esper artifacts list from what i see. Honestly I don't see why you'd ever play her over Sharuum.
Mishra Storm
- 1 time spiral - 6 mana was steep for this deck, paradoxical outcome actually yields better results
- 1 grapeshot - never enough damage, playtesting aetherflux reservoir as a back up kill condition
- 1 dragonskull summit - enters play tapped, time to go.
- 1 drowned catacomb - enters play tapped, time to go.
+ 1 inventors' fair - this card is amazing, tutor on a land? godly
+ 1 snowcovered swamp - black mana tends to be the most useful in this deck
+ 1 aetherflux reservoir - alternate kill card with storm.
+ 1 paradoxical outcome - tap out rocks, bounce rocks, draw lots of cards, play rocks again for storm count
Hey, everyone, I am rebuilding my Mishra deck after not playing it for a while now and need help with cutting 15 cards from it. I'd also greatly appreciate input and suggestions(barring Nether Void and Guardian Beast)
Welcome Chacobos! So something i notice with your decklist is that it appears to be a hybrid of a creature based strategy and a stax deck. Do you prefer one over the other? it would make slimming your deck down by 15 cards a lot simpler. If you want to maintain the hybrid approach that may work out for you, though it might not be as efficient as you'd like
I am fine with both strategies but I guess which strategy would work best in a high power level enviroment, probably stax?
so firstly i feel compelled to warn you: high power environments don't bode well for commanders like Mishra. You may be better off with a commander like Sharuum the Hegemon if you want to play competitive artifacts. That said, Stax is going to be your best bet at a high power table.
That's fine, the high power level isn't my whole playgroup(but enough that we have at least one per table/game) and I already have a few myself. I want to remake Mishra since he was my first artifact deck and I enjoyed him a lot and can be something I can bring to one of the I play at where the power level is not as high...also who doesnt love abusing chaos cards to generate advantage

good man.
Cards i would cut from your deck, with the intention of being stax in the end:
Reshape - you will frequently be locking up mana, so its best to not run X cost effects chief engineer - convoke is ok, but you dont want people untapping, so you will tie up your blockers with convoke contraband king - stax isnt fast, and CK wants lots of artifacts entering play to get mileage. Might be ok, but easy to cut filigree familar - beautiful art, doesnt do enough grand architect - not enough blue for value Muzzio, Visionary Architect - only good in the really late game. Noxious Gearhulk - really expensive for its effect Sharding Sphinx - again, really expensive. Soul of New Phyrexia - expensive Sphinx Summoner - doesnt tutor for noncreatures. bummer.
I can see those changes, forgot about plague and chaos warp somehow. Though I do have a question about when to play Spreading Plague? I've never been good at evaluating when it's best to play it.
Also, say I do end up getting Nether Void or Guardian Beast, would Nether Void take priority over Guardian Beast?

Nether Void is probably my 2nd favorite card in the deck after P.Storm when Mishra is out. it is OPPRESSIVE. Seriously, it shuts down people down. If you get to live the dream and stick both both, you basically win.
Guardian Beast is a great, but not as critical or powerful. I run it because I am known for Mishra in my circles, so artifact hate is ubiquitous. He is a 2nd out for me if Darksteel Forge gets exiled or something, and serves as protection for the board if its just sitting there. Hes a great card, but not as game warping.
alright, appreciate it. I just know there is me(glissa and now also mishra) and a memnarch player that plays artifact so everyone has at least some artifact removal. Might change since two are building Sharuum(grant one of them is a little janky, other somewhat budget). but I can see powerful oppression that combos with mishra before some extra protection.
TL;DR up front - Nothing crazy good for us, but Kaladesh was so juicy thats ok!
Blue
Faerie Artisans - HOLY Goodstuff batman! I really like this card, because it fits in any deck running blue with a flexible mana cost, and it is just great everywhere. It gives us every etb effect an opponent plays, and also gives us tokens to block with. I will be running this in many of my decks. Best card in the set in my opinion.
Goblin Spymaster - Eh...not terrible if people are playing high value creatures that arent combat oriented, but i dont really see the value of him in our deck.
Black
Curse of Vengeance - This card makes so little sense to me. Flavor wise, you are getting revenge before they do anything, and that's silly. Also, backfires hard if your opponents arent slinging lots of stuff every turn. I dont like it.
Magus of the Will - 2nd Best card in the set imo. Yawgies Will is probably the strongest card in magic, and this is that card on a 1 turn delay. Not as good, but noteable. Might be worth a slot in your deck.
Colorless
Armory Automaton - Zzz. Only good if we are running equipment, you cant slot a creature like this otherwise, since it DEPENDS on people having equipment on the board. One dimensional and not useful for us.
Boompile - A risky niv's disk, that cannot hit lands. Not useful at all, unless you want to be more 'fair' to your playgroup than Niv's Disk combo.
Conqueror's Flail - Decent equip actually. +3/+3 takes Mishra from a 6 turn clock to a 3 turn clock, and gives us protection on our turn to act unimpeded. I plan to test in in a voltron build.
Crystaline Crawler - a weird mana dork, but not a bad option if you need one. I wish it didnt cost 4 mana and was 3 instead.
Prismatic Geoscope - A bad gilded lotus - etb tapped and is limited by your basics in play. Only useful if you run wastes in your deck
Multicolor
Ancient Excavation - Not terrible, but honestly we have better draw options with blue in our identity.
Silas Renn, Seeker Adept - Needs evasion, but has potential as a recursion engine. Not sure where to put him though, due to his blatant lack of built in evasion.
I'm just getting back into mtg after a few years hiatus and I'm just thrilled to see this! I loved building with Mishra because he's so unconventional and nobody was really doing it. I'm really glad someone has taken up the mantle and is still refining decks with him. People have the most wonderfully quizzical looks when you put him down
Personally, I like Dack and the new Daretti the best. Dack is really good at stealing anything with lattice out, as well as card filtering a turn faster than old Daretti, which allows you to do a T3 Dack into a T4 Daretti to put a dumb thing out onto the battlefield. Mishra is getting quite a list:
Each one is getting altared which will be fun to get done so Im super excited.
Skysovereign, Consul Flagship as a trollmounted Catapult
Noxious Gearhulk as an Armored Cave Troll
Padeem, Consul of Innovation as a Eastern Pirate
Saheeli Rai as Smaug (?) or Lurtz
Contraband Kingpin as Urkai Orc
Unlicensed Disintegration as the Balrog burning someone
Foundry Inspector as an Orc plain and simple
Filigree Familiar as a Warg
Inventor's Fair as an Orc Checking a sword
Primer - Mishra, Artificer Prodigy
Thor, Ragnar Röks!
Hela, and the Enemies of Asgard
Teferi, Temporal Archmage
I'm trying to keep it under $200 and avoiding infinite combos. Would love some advice on card selections. Basic stragety is to stick a Reckless Fireweaver or Marionette Master then start looping artifacts from the graveyard.

Anyway a pleasure to finally get Mishra under the belt and happy artifact hunting to all those wanting to try him out!

god i love that card, i cut it from my own build at the request of my local playgroup.

Mishra Voltron
- 1 time spiral - as with storm, want to try paradoxical here
- 1 dragonskull summit
- 1 drowned catacomb
- 1 solemn simulacrum - underperforms for 4 mana, want to try padeem instead
+ 1 inventors' fair
+ 1 snowcovered swamp
+ 1 paradoxical outcome
+ 1 padeem, consul of innovation - Padeem has amazing potential as a card draw engine AND protection for our artifacts
Mishra stacks
- 1 magus of the abyss - Slow and kills himself often
- 1 squee goblin nabob - i run less discard now, so squee is less useful
- 1 dragonskull summit
- 1 drowned catacomb
+ 1 inventors' fair
+ 1 snowcovered swamp
+ 1 static orb - amazing stax lockdown card at any stage of the game
+ 1 daretti, ingenious iconoclast - makes fodder, kills creature, 3cc - amazing for stax
Mishra robot army
- 1 dragonskull summit
- 1 drowned catacomb
- 1 solemn simulacrum
+ 1 inventors' fair
+ 1 snowcovered swamp
+ 1 padeem, consul of innovation
Mishra 75
- 1 dragonskull summit
- 1 drowned catacomb
- 1 blood funnel - Under performing as of late. I only really get mileage out of it in storm, so i am dropping it from the 75%

+ 1 snowcovered swamp
+ 1 Saheeli Rai

Cards i would cut from your deck, with the intention of being stax in the end:
Reshape - you will frequently be locking up mana, so its best to not run X cost effects
chief engineer - convoke is ok, but you dont want people untapping, so you will tie up your blockers with convoke
contraband king - stax isnt fast, and CK wants lots of artifacts entering play to get mileage. Might be ok, but easy to cut
filigree familar - beautiful art, doesnt do enough
grand architect - not enough blue for value
Muzzio, Visionary Architect - only good in the really late game.
Noxious Gearhulk - really expensive for its effect
Sharding Sphinx - again, really expensive.
Soul of New Phyrexia - expensive
Sphinx Summoner - doesnt tutor for noncreatures. bummer.
Cards i would add:
Spreading Plague - shuts down creatures. hard.
Chaos Warp - Problem solver
Primer - Mishra, Artificer Prodigy
Thor, Ragnar Röks!
Hela, and the Enemies of Asgard
Teferi, Temporal Archmage
Also, say I do end up getting Nether Void or Guardian Beast, would Nether Void take priority over Guardian Beast?
Guardian Beast is a great, but not as critical or powerful. I run it because I am known for Mishra in my circles, so artifact hate is ubiquitous. He is a 2nd out for me if Darksteel Forge gets exiled or something, and serves as protection for the board if its just sitting there. Hes a great card, but not as game warping.
