Threw it together last minute so there is definitely room for improvement. Need more lands, need a bit more card draw (or just playtest some more to see if I draw any of current ones) and need some source of evasive, removal, answers. It was threw hastily together, but it's refine time.
NEed to get my hands on Draining Whelk and Beast Within. And planning on playing some EDH tonight.
I'm liking your deck list. I'm interested in a game play update when you have a chance. I may try out a few cards you are running like Asceticism and Simic Signet for more protection.
Here's a question I've been pondering. How many and which non-counter related creatures/artifacts can we get away with running? Would we be better as a more all-in counter deck, or as a more good stuff deck with Sylvan Primordial, etc.
I only got 1 game with Vorel over the weekend, not enough to make judgement yet. I was doing pretty good, and then a Damia player stole my Vorel and made my life complicated. I really need a few more games to see how things shake up. The two things I did get out of the game, Doubling season is an absolute win card in this deck, and IO can get guys up to 15-20 power quite easily when things are going well. I'll try to post the list I played tomorrow when I have my deck handy.

Thanks. Other RL prioirites in the way. I did end up getting one game in before 2 players teamed up to get one combo to go off (Sanguine Bond and the other one; it was late and they had to go). But before that I was doing some sort of shenanigans. Think we only got 10 turns, if that, to play but in that time I played Fathom Mage, then Vorel next turn. Dropped Illusionist's Bracers with Minamo in play. And in response to a board wipe, I used Vorel to double the counters on Fathom Mage 4 times. So that's 1,2,4,8 counters and 15 overall draws. I miscounted twice it seems. I drew 9 first, then correctly (I thought) drew 3 more for a total of 12. Misplays! So I had 18 cards by my next turn, so I used Fabricate to find my Expedition Map in order to find Reliquary Tower. cuz I wanted to keep my hand. ofc.
EDIT: O ya. And one of the 18 cards I drew was Darksteel Reactor, so I had some sort of wincon if I could get that going with Vorel and friends.
Before the board wipe though, I had Asceticism in play which would give ANYONE dealing with Vorel a headache, but All is Dust got around that sadly. I have yet to see all the cards in the deck as this was only the 2nd game since its creation (and a short 1st for this iteration), so there are some personal choices in it that tickle my heart. But if I draw Titan Forge and it literal does nothing, I'll cut it. I just wanna use my 9/9 titan token I've been hauling around with me.
Focusing on your question, it really is up to you. Different styles for how you want to build and play the deck. OP wanted to use ALL the dice he has. I wanted to play Lux Cannon, Titan Forge, and Forgetton Ancient and my Riku EDH had a different objective. So Vorel inherited all the counters matters creatures from Riku and it became the goofy decklist seen previously. The deck CAN be built with more 'good stuff,' but for me, it detracts from all the other goofy stuff the deck wants to do. Play **** with counters and double em. And if you win, awesome. If you lose, then hopefully you got to PLAY in the game and you got to do something fun/dumb that people decided your 50/50 needed to get hit with that Phthisis. "O noes!" =p
I can do a more in depth analysis of 'why this card is here' later. By ;tl dr;, personal preference. Build whatever makes you happy.
Experiment Kraj....ehh. How many Vorels do we really need?
Enough to live the dream! The dream of having Kraj, Vorel, and Gilder Bairn on the field all with counters on them and enough mana to use Kraj chaining the tap and untap abilities. ALL OF THE COUNTERS!
Having made a Vorel deck myself on the night of the MTGO prerelease, I can safely say that Vorel is a serous badass. Just crushed a 2HG team with an 80/80 flying trampling shrouded hasted primordial hydra. Wasn't far in the game either, maybe turn 6-7ish? Depletion lands are really powerful with Vorel.
I have Kraj in my deck, but he's 'that card' which you never draw, so you can never tell if it's gonna work out well enough or not.
Also had a game where I took an elusive krasis from 0 power to 1000 counters (the cap apparently) in a single turn. Vorel, Illusionist's Bracers, Rings of Brighthearth, Minamo, doubling season, and about 240 green mana floating from a storage land I emptied out. It was absolutely nuts and totally makes the deck my favorite ever.
These decks look so fun. I'm inspired to make my own.
Can't wait to try it out myself.

Hey guys so I've actually moved on from commander on to 60 card decks so I don't have any commander decks.
Anyway I've started my own gameplay channel in which I play games (Magic also)
I hadn't got around to posting it yet. Been a busy last week or so.
I'm quite interested in coming up with a strong Vorel build, but quite honesty I'm still not positive what the best 99 cards to put with him are yet. I haven't had the time to figure it out, but I have a decent start on the theory. We want 1.) Cards that generate +1 counters (graft and evolve guys for example) 2.) cards that multiply our +1 counters (proliferate, doubling season) and 3.) cards to protect our board position while we ramp up (counters, propaganda). Since we can proliferate and double our counters several ways, its also nice to sneak in a few other cards that have counters, but not the +1 variety (Level up and storage lands being good examples) without sacrificing the main focus of the deck.
The deck list is still quite rough and dirty, but it is functional and had a few good showings in my testing. Feel free to poke at what you see.
There are a bunch of cards I use in my Vorel deck that aren't here, but one that is a total house is fungal behemoth. Hits usually at critical mass (eg >40/40) and after a few Vorel taps become ginormous.

Sure thing - he is my favorite "hidden gem" card - I used him in ghave and thromok with hydras and stuff and people had to read the card when he came out half the time. Then they realized he was a huge/huge - Oh, crap...
hmmmm for planeswalker fun:
jace memory adept
jace beleren
Tamiyo the moon sage
Garruk Primal Hunter
Garruk Wildspeaker
Garruk Caller of Beasts
Karn Liberated
tezzeret the seeker (artifact heavy build)
for fun Vorel interaction: liquid metal coating
because nothing says lol like:
Vorel equipped with illusionists bracers with a liquid metal coating out
cast Karn turn him into an artifact activate Vorel's ability and insta ultimate
(or in Karns case: reset the game)
for further fun: magistrates scepter to get those extra turns... of course after you stockpile the charge counters on the scepter you can theoretically take as many turns as needed
What about Helix Pinncl as a win con. Also Mycosynth Lattice turns everything into a colorless artifact so Vorel works perfectly then.
Helix Pinnacle has shroud. Vorel can't target it even if it turns into an artifact. It is better to run an engine that generates enough mana to pump 100 counters on the pinnacle than changing it into an artifact to double the counters.
Helix Pinnacle has shroud. Vorel can't target it even if it turns into an artifact. It is better to run an engine that generates enough mana to pump 100 counters on the pinnacle than changing it into an artifact to double the counters.
Though by running Gyre Sag, Seedborn Muse, and Awakeningthis becomes an easier task than one realizes. Even though Vorel can not target it he can still hit the Sage. Mycosynth Lattice in suggested because it is a broad way to abuse planeswalkers, other enhancements and allowing you to spend even colorless mana as blue, green, or what ever color you need it.
In my opinion as passion Vorel player, there are much better choices how to use 'infinite' mana than Helix Pinnacle - this card is useless in 95% of board states.
Much better is to use cards, that actually do something even if you are not in infinite mode - such as Staff of Domination - you can draw cards, untap Vorel, and if you suddenly have infinite mana, it is also wincondition (not to mention that it is infinite mana combo together with Vorel and Gemstone Array or Pentad Prism)
I think that versatility is the key to success
I can see potential infinite mana but it líos like you have to build it up to get there
Two things: Cytoplast root-kin, and aether vial. Vial can be crazy versatile here. I am tuning this now, and i have found root-kin to be crazy good. My list also runs doubling season and deaths presence. New M14 hydras are both boss here.
Experiment Kraj gets the activated abilities of anything with a counter and can give things counters (give Vorel a counter and you now have 2 Vorel's effectively)
The new Kalonian Hydra from M14 would be crazy amazing in this deck (with Kraj and Vorel). You summon him with Doubling Season out (8 counters), then use Vorel's ability to add 16 (because of Doubling season) more (thats 24 total now). Then use Kraj copying Vorel's ability to add 48 counters (72 total now). Then swing (hopefully you've hasted him somehow, preferably with Swiftfoot Boots ) and you have a 216/216 (72 + (72*2 from DSeason)) Trample creature the first time you swing with the Hydra....Yeah, that's a thing.
You could also use the new Strionic Resonator to copy the triggered ability of the Hydra when it swings and you would have a 648/648 hydra (with trample) swinging.
By the way this only takes around 11 mana total (4G, 2[MANA]U[/MANA] and 5 colorless) in one turn (assuming you've put a counter on Vorel with Kraj on a separate turn and put out Doubling Season and the Resonator on other turns).
To summarize: The potential for a 648/648 creature with Trample for only 5UUGGGG in one turn (assuming the other pieces are in place prior to this turn).
I'm not sure there is a big enough dice bag in the world for what the new hydra could do with this deck.
I haven't read the whole thread so apologies if something has been suggested already.
First things first, I wholeheartedly second Doubling Season.
I would add in Triskelion as additional removal. Combined with Vorel, Doubling Season, Forgotten Ancient it can easily wipe the board. And if you get all 3...
Bred For the Hunt is a lot more flavorful than Coastal Piracy. Plus it's cheaper and in my experience hated on less.
I thought Gilder Bairn would be hot stuff, but I actually took it out because it usually only gets one Untap because it just dies to any opposing creature. It is certainly bonkers if you get him out with Experiment Kraj, though
