Future Sight and Magus of the Future are living up to my high hopes Deranged Assistant is the surprise. It has allowed me to filter lands off the top for melek or mill off Flame Jab to take advantage of casting spells from my gy effects.
Catalyst Stone has been kind of disappointing thus far. I just never really like drawing it. Im wondering what I should add in its place.
Any good cards really missing from my list to replace Catalyst stone with?
I would hit a few wheels in an Epic Experiment, then have to pitch all my rituals, leaving 0 mana for any past in flames value
If your experiment picked up a Plagiarize, a Molten Psyche, a Ritual, a Time Spiral, or a storm finisher, then you would have been fine. Not to mention how many recursion options let you recast it if you pick up a ritual in the mix. The problem here is either in deck construction, a too-small epic experiment (x=7 is not usually enough for instance), or a little variance of hitting wheels that aren't Time Spiral.
I win almost every game in which I resolve Experiment for x=10 or more. It would take (and has taken) multiple counterspells to stop it.
I don't like Epic Experiment in our decks. It does nothing with Halls.
Saying it does nothing with dream halls? Sorry but I think you are crazy. It is a U/R spell so it can be used to cast any U or R spell in your deck. Gold cards are so clutch with halls. It's another reason to love Cerebral Vortex. Haven't you done this before?
Dream Halls in play
Pitch Experiment to cast Mana Geyser Mystic Retreival for Experiment (or insert recursion here, usually for 2 mana or less)
Cast Experiment for X=18
???
Profit
It's too good a card. It turns your mana into game wins. On several occasions the recursion in the yard be it Retrieval or PiF lets me recast Experiment for even more mana the second time around. This gets me a scoop most of the time. I would never cut it with 35+ sorceries and instants.
Any good cards really missing from my list to replace Catalyst stone with?
I find it a little tough to keep just for Past in Flames value when I've only got like 5 flashback cards. I like global cost reducers like Stone Calendar and such a lot better. If you're looking for a replacement value card, try out Library of Leng? It lets you save key cards off of your wheels and set up free copies with Melek. I haven't found room for it but I'm interested to see how it goes. It has no synergy with Dream Halls unfortunately but honestly that card is broken enough without any additional help.

I haven't run Epic Experiment, so I haven't done the above. I'll give it a shot.. Are you running it with Melek or a different Izzet General?
I can't cast it with Halls is what I should have written. Yes, it's excellent for pitching.

Sorry for the ninja edits but I don't think it changes your context.
I am using Melek. We didn't need any other Izzet generals help to go off so his free copies off the top are all upside. Doubling up on an Experiment sounds ridiculous to me.
Since you play storm I would think you would really enjoy experiment. It turns your mana into free storm count. Doesn't take much to hit a Temporal Fissure and bounce someone's lands and it gets better from there.

I run Dream Halls but being an enchantment makes it pretty unreliable so I like to have backup options of which High Tide is a part. Currently I've also been testing Seething Song with good results as well. So there's 2 mana ramp packages, the Dream Halls package which consists of Dream Halls and the not Dream Halls package which is the cost reducers, rituals and what not.
@Catalyst Stone: !! This card is nuts….you guys are all playing Quiet Speculation like I've been telling you to right? Right!? Plus it's bonkers with Past in Flames which is pretty much our primary win condition.
@Remand: Highly recommended. I like counterspells that can counter my own spells for value, this one is great because you can bounce a storm spell with it to recast.
So I swapped around about 15 cards to make the deck melek friendly and swapped out aggro cards for draw and storm cards. 1st game out, I get a big Mind's Desire and then get Ignite Memories off of Mind's Desire. It was good times. However, they guys were not so happy at the 30+ minutes it took that turn to fully resolve to kill them, lol.
I probably still need to tweak my list a bit, but I beat 2 of the most powerful decks my friends have in the process, so its potent already. I'll have to post my current list for suggestions later when I get home.
So here are the list I currently have sleeved up. Its functional and it wins games, but its not 100% optimized yet. Feel free to critique it to death and help me improve it. 2 things for sure I need are some dual lands and to get the future sight I traded for and forgot to pick up.
It's pretty silly, and I'm not sure what direction to take it in. Livewire Lash combined with Storm is hilariously silly, and combined with Shocker/Barbed Shocker, all sorts of shenanigans happen.

So, relatively new to the deck, but earlier today, I got:
Reach through mists (drew turnabout), tapped out played turnabout, played mystic retrieval getting back turnabout, played turnabout, flashbacked retrieval getting back turnabout, played turnabout. Then Empty the Warrens and Minds Desire (yeah, misplay there) which revealed Sphinx Bone-Wand and Ignite Memories.

(Bob, I love your list and I wanna see this thing in action next time you're out my way!)
I know it's been discussed before, but what are people's thoughts on defensive cards? Torpor orb, ropaganda, overburden, etc...
I find myself losing quickly without them, so I'm trying to find the right ones to put in. Of course, by doing so, it's reducing the spell count. I am trying to find nice mass-bounce spells to use, of course. But they usually use up most of my mana.
Seeking the opinion of the rest of my fellow spell-slinging Izzet League:
As I am converting my T&L list over to a Melek list (Thank you, Game Day promo!) I am trying to find other ways of interacting with Melek, and one natural fit seemed to be Possibility Storm. I want to keep Tezzeret in the list for tutoring up rocks/bridge/torpor orb and ramping mana... but I need to add a second Planeswalker to the deck so I don't have a "dead" card with storm on the field.
I am figuring that Tamiyo would probably be the second best planeswalker for this deck but I don't have access to one, so I was wondering what would be a best bet for a 2nd walker? Chandra, the Firebrand for another possible Fork or maybe baby Jace Beleren for the extra card drawing? Jace, Architect of Thought for mini-FoF and a possible defensive ability?

Torpor Orb is OP and should be in every non-ETB deck given the state of the metagame. I love it and I will occasionally tutor for it with Tezzeret. I have had some success with Propaganda. Overburden I'm not crazy about YET but I think it could be good. I haven't got to actually draw it yet. Although I will probably try it soon because I have been really disappointed with Ensnaring Bridge. I have been wheeling a bit too much to make it that useful . Also I have been a fan of Meekstone which really discourages attacking in general and is a funny way to add to your storm count as it is often a free cast.
I think more than three of these types of cards is overkill and three *might* be too many, based on my experiences with them.

I think it's OK to have one dead card to P-storm. Statistically it's just not likely you're going to hit him and you always have Melek-assisted library maniuplation to help out with that. And if he's in your hand you can usually discard him for value anyway to things like Careful Consideration, Thoughtflare and such. From a math perspective, even WITH library manipulation in play, you have just about as much a chance of hitting Tezzy off a P-storm as you do having him on top of your library when Melek is out. P-storm will be in play far less often than Melek. Shouldn't you be building around Melek and not P-storm? Which card is your general?
If you had to play another walker I would definitely run with Tamiyo because both of her top abilities are relevant at all stages of the game, her minus ability is ridiculous, and no one can risk letting her ultimate go off (or else you generate infinite mana and faceroll).
Mathematically the odds are really low, but I know I am going to be super sad if all I have in hand with a Storm out is Tezzeret after Melek being removed (which even with storm out is possible) and I can't cast it at all. I don't think it's hurting the deck too much if I hedge my bets and add a second planeswalker so that the Tezzeret in the above situation could cascade into a Tamiyo or Chandra or something. Perhaps I am wrong in this and the off chance of a dead card is worth it, but I know if the scenario comes up where Tezz is sitting dead in my hand with a Storm on my field I'm going to look like the chick in the art for Blood of the Martyr

Needed to make top 8. Made 8th. Mission Accomplished.
Go go homebrew RDW/R/B aggro hybrid with all the second tier ****ty cards and no good cards (except hellrider, becaue I got 4 for $1 when it first came out, and I love them). Also, Toil // trouble was so totally worth it. 6-10pts damage for 3-6 mana? or sign yourself in splashable colors? Card is awesome.
I know it's been discussed before, but what are people's thoughts on defensive cards? Torpor orb, ropaganda, overburden, etc...

Torpor Orb is obviously a fan favorite on this thread, and I agree with it to a certain level. It's not a catchall though. I think Overburden and Pendrell Mists work out awesome on paper, but I haven't tried them yet. There's another good blue enchantment, I'll look it up later.
As Sonik says, if you're not doing the aggro route, meekstone is good, and Arena of the Ancients serves similar vs voltron decks.

Tamiyo is simply good card draw, offering a Borrowing 100,000 arrows for free each turn. Realisticly, you're not going off with her, though if you do, you pretty much just win.
Jace is ok, giving you extra draw, obviously the Mind Sculptor would actually be best for Melek, but given price vs effect, I wouldn't buy one. I mean, I've made stupid purchases in the past, and I still won't buy jace. I'd rather get a mana drain or timetwister first, and neither of those is actually going to happen.
Ral Zarek is actually pretty good, as you can use his untap with gilded lotus, thran dynamo, or izzet boilerworks for decent ramp.
Of the chandras, I don't know which I like best, I happen to like Ablaze a lot, but this deck doesn't really want to whiff on a 3 card wheel. The extra fork is probably more useful, allowing you to get bonus CA out of her.
I couldn't make it, but a pal got 2 (top-8'ed + traded for 1) and gave me one of his.

"Have awesome planeswalker in my hand-- Don't have awesome planeswalker in my library"
/firstworldmagicproblems (she looks like the Martyr chick!)
It probably isn't hurting the deck at all because it's just one card. I'm just saying with a single walker you're just as likely to blank off P-storm as you are off of Melek, so it's a wash.
@bob Top 8? You suckkkkkkk
Seriously though congrats. Homebrew is the best brew for local events. I hope Hellrider won you a ton of games since you guys are such bestest buds. I'm hoping to get mine from eBay this week but the seller won't mark it as shipped

Had a game where I dropped a turn 4 Hellrider, swung for 4, turn 5 hellrider, swung for 10 (1 got chumped), turn 6 fused toil+trouble for 2+7 cards.
other wise had a game go t1 cackler (unleach) t2 Spike Jester (5), t3 shred freak (12) cacckler (unleash). t4 hellrider. My opponent just was "wtf man"
Mate came over and I playtested the overburden and propaganda changes, along with some other changes. 3 seems a bit low for the number of "Stop an early onslaught" cards... I need a reasonable chance of getting one early.
One game, it did happen, and he eventually attacked for a decent amount.
Me: "How many creatures are you swinging with?"
Him: "8"
Me: "Keep Watch, draw 8 cards, cyclonic rift, return all your stuff to your hand, tap Walking Atlas, put a land into play, untap it with cerulean wisps, tap walking atlas for another land, untap it with twitch, tap it again for a third land. You doing anything else on your turn?"
It doesn't seem that impressive, but dropping 3 land on an opponents turn in a U/R deck is still awesome.

Heh. I work out in Arlington now, making it harder to swing out there, but one day I will... one day...

@bob Top 8? You suckkkkkkk
