I agree. I've decided to just stick to The Scarab god for casual reanimator. I wonder if Bolas could see any competitive play in more of a control shell or if it's just doomed to be too expensive? I do like that you only have to pay 4 initially. I don't mind d a 4 CMC getting countered but a 7cmc getting countered is essentially getting time walked.
I would be very surprised to see him in competitive. Just underwhelming for 4 and 7 mana. The other two seem better and they don't see play either

Hey guys so I've actually moved on from commander on to 60 card decks so I don't have any commander decks.
Anyway I've started my own gameplay channel in which I play games (Magic also)
Looks like I'm cutting Exotic Orchard for Forbidden Orchard (Slightly better land and can combo)
Also wanting to find some room for Runic Almasaur and Spellseeker. There are a few things I think are slightly weaker than the rest of the deck but not sure I can justify removing them. Any thoughts on potential cuts?

Why does it suck? I've had some good success with it in my Dralnu storm list as a second copy of whatever tutor I need to keep my Paradox storm turn going. It seems like it would be great in here as a second tutor to find Reanimate. Was it too slow?

Well it came down to there is no reason to reanimate it so I can't abuse it and in a decklist that I'm not running Grim tutor then there isn't much reason to run a card at the same cmc that is more limited in what it can find. Wish I thought about it more before getting the foil. Oops

That seems like a fair point. I've had some great success with it in my Dralnu Paradox Engine decklist, so I'm sad that she doesn't quite cut it for your own decklist.

Yeah that card I can probably find a home for in Brago or Scarab God lists.. Definitely doesn't fit here. Gotta abuse the body to make it worth.
Pretty much exactly this. I have liked it in my Breya bulid where I run Skullclamp and Displacer but in here the only abuse can be with Kederekt Levithan and I usually use him for defense rather than abusing things like this, not really worth it.

Hey all! Was recommended to come here by @benjameenbear since I posted a reanimator deck and I LOVE what I see here! Thinking back, I have referred to this primer several times for ideas on my reanimator deck. Kudos to you for all the good work you have done!
I have been working on a reanimator deck for YEARS as a throwback to the French Rites/Junk Rites decks of standard yesteryear. Very similar to you, I fell in love with the strategy, but have never got it to where I want. I've tried everything from Karador, Ghost Chieftain and Teneb, the Harvester to venturing into esper with Zur the Enchanter and now the new Chromium, the Mutable. Been difficult trying to find a commander that still has that simple theme of reanimating a huge thing for cheap, but resilient enough to not get graveyard hated into oblivion. Thinking I may break my Vorthros rule of making commander decks and try going Thrasios/Tymna to put a bit more power into the deck (or even Atraxa, Praetors' Voice for something different).
My question to all of you is a little silly, but involves the viability of my 3 favorite creatures in magic:
Do these creatures fit into this style of deck, or do they belong elsewhere? Would love to hear your advice on the matter!
Also, going to link the reanimator build I have been working on, so thoughts are appreciated! here

For Esper I highly reccommend Zur the enchanter as the commander. He can fetch up targets like Animate dead to pretty much cheat in any threat.
As far as reanimation targets it highly depends on the meta but personally I always go for Quality over Quantity.
I run 4 targets offensively and 1 defensively.
Jin-Gixtias is manditory since it gives you massive card advantage and pretty much wins the game.
I also like Con Sphinx and Nezahal since they give you card advantage and are massive threats on their own.
Kederekt Levithan as a defensive target (Also works very well with Zur) and out of all the white cards I would try Elesh Norn, grand cenobite. I don't think the other white cards are quite as good. If you are running things like Armageddon/Ravages of war then Avacyn would also be solid but I don't think she is worth a slot otherwise.

@GrimoireDark
To supplement Dies' post, WUB has a pretty good selection of Loot effects and tutor effects. The reason to run into R and G respectively is so that you can have access to the utterly broken Survival of the Fittest and additional Wheel of Fortune and Faithless Looting effects. I think the new Chromium is a fine choice since he's a good beater on his own and looks really cool (Vorthos is important to me too!), but Zur is probably the better choice realistically since he can tutor Animate Dead and Necromancy directly into play without allowing your opponents a chance to counter your Reanimation spell.
I personally like to run 7-8 Reanimation targets just to make sure I have a variety in the case one of my Reanimated targets is exiled somehow. Jin-Giataxias, Core Augur is the best thing you could be doing since Griselbrand got banned. The sheer amount of card advantage that Gitaxias can create will massively swing the game in your favor if he is not dealt with by your opponents.

I did a mockup of Zur as the commander of the deck with taking out many of the reanimator targets I had originally, fun cards and adding in some draw/discard creatures. In nearly every goldfish I did, Zur ran WAY smoother with him at the helm then anyone else. Going from turn 3 Zur, to turn 4 attack step to go fetch Oath of Jace to dump some creatures or to get a big target is great! It makes me a little sad that my 3 favorite creatures can't really fit in a reanimator strategy like this too well due to really not impacting the board enough. My main goal is to find a deck that is very much the embodiment of me as a magic player (as silly as that sounds) and trying to build this one was hopefully my way to get there. Perhaps I can tweak the deck to make it more me like and use my favorite creatures elsewhere.
As for the addition of R or G, I have tried making list for those colors and it is has been VERY difficult for me to build something that wasn't trying to do too many things at once. Plus, playtesting makes the deck feel like it's all over the play (Got lucky building a Breya, Etherium Shaper to actually turn out good).
Anywho, your advice has been super helpful! I will continue to try building a better reanimator deck (even if I decide to swap colors and go back to Junk or something else). Any other insight would be helpful, but thank you for what you have said thus far!
Very likely that this is a meta specific card but I can see it being good in my group so testing him out. Not sure if he will stick or not

Assassin's trophey
Great removal and if this was still Tasigur it would be a huge finisher since it destroys all cards they have on the field. However it is still insane here since it kills everything. I feel like beast within will be cut from a lot of decks for this but we don't run beast. I think it's better than chain and abrupt decay but not sure if either of those is the cut. If I were to cut something it would be chain but not sure if that's correct. Regardless I think Trophey will make an impact here.
Mission Breifing
Is this better than snapcaster? Doesn't target so single target gravehate like deathrite don't stop it plus you can pair it with vamp tutor for an easy combo.
Vamp tutor worldgorger then mission breifing the worldgorger in the yard and vamp tutor the animate dead on top and win. Seems like a solid add. Don't know if it cuts snapcaster from this list but is at least another add/test here.
Doom whisperer
Bad griselbrand throws cards in the yard forever. With any reanimation card you can Surveil until you get a fatty or worldgorger for wins. Plus it's actually castable at 5 mana. Think he will take Kederekt's spot.
Thoughts on these or other cards I may have missed?

I know trophey and briefing will likely stay in the deck for a while but think doom whisperer has some potential as well.
Testing these out the next few weeks until Rtrtrtrtrtr comes out and then if they were good they will be official adds.

Not impressed with Doom whisperer so far. Like at all so he will likely be kicked.
Missing Kederekt already (no surprise) so he's coming back in for whisperer.
I am considering running the new Niv-Mizzet, it's a bad Nezahal but the damage he can do is not irrelvent.
He's pretty much uncastable but that's never really been an issue. I think Niv will be a decent card and am hoping he falls closer to Nezahal and con sphinx rather than sire of stagnation
To the suprise of no one Assassin's trophey is great but I've been far more impressed with Mission Briefing
I personally think it's the best card in the set and actually better than snapcaster (at least in here). Card is fantasic and can lead to pretty easy wins with vampiric tutor

Cool to know that Mission Briefing has tested well for you. I'm struggling to justify it in my Dralnu Storm list since it already doesn't play Snappy.
How many times have you removed Get Wreckt Leviathan now just to say you miss it? Hah.
Assassin's Trophy shines in a cEDH meta where the basic land count for your opponent's is really minimal/non-existent. Still, it's a nice panic button even when you do Rampant Growth your opponent as long as it breaks up that infinite combo, right? I'm re-evaluating my Tasigur Flash Hulk list and my preliminary experiences with the Trophy have been pretty good.
Question: how do you combat Flash Hulk decks? I've been analyzing that matchup quite a bit and it seems to be a really difficult one for any cEDH deck to combat on a consistent basis.

I think I've cut levithan at least 5 times only to return it. It sometimes does nothing for a few games but I absolutely need it when the game becomes to clogged with cards and I need a reset.
Tasigur and Trophey are best friends. Completely takes away the need for beast within/shift since trophey wins by it's self. While they're still good it makes the kills much easier.
Against hulk decks I typically try to focus/kill them first (as does most of the table) often they're running a build with the graveyard being used so something like Rakdos charm, Noxious revival, Memory's Journey, and things like that help a lot. Trickbind also just stops them, and it helps that I run probably too many counters. I just play defense until it's safe to go off with my own combo

That seems to be the general consensus that most people I've asked have come to as well. Band the table together and then build your resources and wait for the Flash Hulk player to fizzle/get stopped and then run your own combo out for execution. I didn't realize that Memory's Journey says target player. Neat tech.

On average they can combo out faster but I find that unless it's 1 v 1 they often try to combo and will be ganged up on. I take this chance to get myself into 2nd place with set-up but still hold some answers. Wait until the table has run low on answers then use my own combo to win.
There have been a few cases where I have entomb'd a memory's journey just to stop another graveyard combo. It's been real solid there.

Fair enough. I'll try and keep tabs on what others are doing to combat Flash Hulk strategies. My MTG playing time will be taking a significant cut as I expect my daughter to join my family of 3 at the end of October.
Perhaps I'm missing something, but how does Assassin's Trophy replace the RealityWithin loop with infinite mana? The Trophy will simply get rid of all of your opponents' permanents whereas the Reality Within combo actually kills your opponents. I think it's wise to run the Trophy AND the Reality Within combo because all of the pertinent cards are quite strong on their own.
I haven't played Tasigur in a few years (Honestly, if Thraisos gets banned I still may not go back) but I think that simply blowing up every card on the battlefield and playing your own is enough, you can still make infinite geese with swansong plus anything else and then all you need is something like noxious revival or memory's journey so you don't deck yourself for one turn. Of course I have no idea what the deck would run anymore so I'm not certain on this

-Timetwister
-Kederekt Levithan
-chain of vapor
Of those I think Chain is the most likely to return
+Assassin's trophey
+Mission Breifing
+Doom Whisperer
I know trophey and briefing will likely stay in the deck for a while but think doom whisperer has some potential as well.
Testing these out the next few weeks until Rtrtrtrtrtr comes out and then if they were good they will be official adds.

It's not updated since I haven't played it in years now but this was the most recent list before it was changed.

Perhaps I'm missing something, but how does Assassin's Trophy replace the Reality Within loop with infinite mana? The Trophy will simply get rid of all of your opponents' permanents whereas the Reality Within combo actually kills your opponents. I think it's wise to run the Trophy AND the Reality Within combo because all of the pertinent cards are quite strong on their own.
