Animar, Soul of Elements does something really Really REALLY well. He belches out creatures incredibly fast. I've had a lot of fun with this deck for many, many years - and have lighted the deck up a bit in terms of it's oppression and have balanced it out by adding in a bit more protection for Animar now. The theme is still the same: +1/+1 Counter Abuse. The objective is to overwhelmingly produce significant threats that, even if they are small creatures, result in amassing enough +1/+1 counters that they too become threats. The resulting shenanigans should quickly result in an overwhelming aggro victory. If the board is wiped, Animar's ability to belch out creatures should make for quick recoveries. At least, that's the plan.
All my decks try to adhere to these guidelines:
1) Be able to win.
2) Be mostly true to a flavor and a theme.
3) Be good against one or multiple opponents.
5) Be fun to pilot or to play against and interactive.
6) Have multiple paths to victory.
7) Have lots of cool interactions and synergy.
8) Play out differently every game to keep it fun over a long time.
9) Be streamlined and fast to play without excessive upkeep, time-consuming play or overcomplicated boardstates.
10) Integrate the Commanders abilities into the strategy at least a little, but be able to win without ever playing the commander.
The number in front of the card will denote CMC of the creature/spell.
Build complete. Also got a chance to do some testing. Animar gets a little expensive to maintain if he's been wiped 2-3 times. I find myself short on mana in these cases so I think I'll toss in a few more ramp creatures.
Naturally, as I like all the cards I add...XD...objectiveness from an outside source would help immensely. 3-4 cuts??
Does devoted druid really abuse counters? Is there a way you can easily remove the -1/-1 counters without it costing more mana, resources or effort than the druid produces?
Otherwise I'm not sure what you would want to cut. You run a lot of sweepers, which seems counter productive if you're trying to win via aggro strategy, but having sweepers isn't always a bad thing. Have you considered adding kicker creatures that gain counters when you kick them (cetavolver for example)? Or Primordial Hyrda and friends (apocalypse hydra)?
Also I would be inclined to add more haste enablers to gain advantage of your creatures before they are swept away. Anger is great (I see he's on your list to add) but also In the Web of War and Maelstrom Wanderer could be powerful additions towards an aggro victory.

I had it in my head that a few counters could naturally be placed on Devoted Druid, extending this mana ramp...perhaps Bloom Tender is more consistent...I think I'll add Ondu Giant aswell...for the ramp.
Cetavolver, Primordial Hyrda and Apocalypse Hydra were all on my short list. I have considered kicker creatures, but kickers ussually involve colored mana, so it ups the cost. Primordial Hyrda is too easy to get picked off by deathtouch, removal, chump block, etc. Apocalypse Hydra is tempting. Would definately be in if it's burn were only a single red instead of a red + colorless.
It's not a creature, but how about Druids' Repository? Gain mana from both attacking and proliferate.
Regarding Primordial Hydra. First it gains trample once it has 10+ counters, which given Animar's ability, should happen pretty quickly. Secondly consider the synergy with Novijen Sages.
How's Mycoloth working out? I want to really like him ("yay, millions of saprolings!") but I'm not a fan of devour.

- Don't know how Mycoloth is working out yet. Never got him down. I'm not a fan of devour either, but I wasn't planning on using devour. I was planning on utilizing graft. Might devour a few weenies...it obviously depends on board position...
Thoughts on Mindclaw Shaman?? Saw him in the store the other day...thought he could become degenerate with bounce...not sure if Animar is the right place for him though....as a goblin it should have been wording "when he enters and when he leaves..."...okay okay...maybe "when he goes to the graveyard". that would be goblin. (I was getting greedy).
I'm playing with Mindclaw Shaman, but am yet to have him enter play. Depends a lot on the decks other people play in your meta, but he certainly has potential to do good things and if nothing else disrupt your opponent's game plan. Or alternatively, whiff and do nothing. High risk, potentially high reward.
So, I'm working at making Animar more competitive. Currently everything about him is just too slow.

Have you ever used Ashling the Pilgrim's Earthquake ability? How did that go?
Had Thrummingbird in my 1.0 list. Whenever it came out, it didn't have enough immediate impact on the board state to warrent inclusion this time around.
Never had the oppertunity to see Ashling the Pilgrim in action yet...been in since 1.0, but just never drew yet. It's iffy so I'm not sure if it'll get cut or not yet...

Yeah, I have other immediate draw options that may be better, but when I saw Bred for the Hunt released, the theme just screams too loud to be ignored. I'll see how it goes.

I'm going to avoid Palinchron, mostly because of price. If I came across a copy that I could afford, it would definately be an excellant addition to Animar abuse.
You should add deceiver exarch/splinterfrite. One of those plus dead eye and gilded lotus equals infinite mana of any color. Pretty sick. Might as well add splinter two and Kiki-jiki by that point though.

Animar had to go through a fairly large overhaul recently. I stripped out a bunch of cards from my newly constructed Edric's Forest Friends deck. I've since tossed in more cards that like to abuse +1/+1 counters, but I think I don't have enough control spells now. Suggestions welcome....especially those that still love to make use of that +1/+1 theme.

Really found Ancestral Statue to be quite broken in my playgroup's meta....so I'm taking it out in favor of Taurean Mauler - great card and fits my +1/+1 counter theme beautifully.
So a major overhaul of my Animar deck has recently taken place. I had a number of decks that made want of some pretty sweet cards that I only had in Animar, and so I had to do some serious tweaking in order to bring him back to the kitchen table. Please refer to the OP for decklist details and changelog.
So far for play testing, the decklist is all meat. Massive swing, that if left unchecked for a turn or two, will really ruin the opponent's day. I think it has fair ability to ignore most elements in the aggro realm.

Got ahold of a Maelstrom Wanderer and this is no way that card is going to sit in a box unplayed....so I tossed it in Animar.

Really found Ancestral Statue to be quite broken in my playgroup's meta....so I'm taking it out in favor of Taurean Mauler - great card and fits my +1/+1 counter theme beautifully.

So a major overhaul of my Animar deck has recently taken place. I had a number of decks that made want of some pretty sweet cards that I only had in Animar, and so I had to do some serious tweaking in order to bring him back to the kitchen table. Please refer to the OP for decklist details and changelog.
So far for play testing, the decklist is all meat. Massive swing, that if left unchecked for a turn or two, will really ruin the opponent's day. I think it has fair ability to ignore most elements in the aggro realm.
