Jack! Long time no talk about nothing and get nowhere!
I love the primer, just one question: since you're looking to stay politically correct, how about a counterspell (sometimes you just need one) like Arcane Denial?
Long time indeed!
Low CMC "symmetrical" counters like Arcane Denial are fine, but still politically offensive. The reason for this is that just the act of comboing itself is going to set the table against you-comboing with counter backup is like tossing gas on a fire.
Counters are also extremely linear problems solvers-they solve something (typically indefinitely), but lack the versatility of other options. This is why Muddle The Mixture is included. It's a counter and tutor in a pinch. If the counter can do multiple things and your mana base supports it, run it if you have room. Always consider all other options first though. I would sooner run Esper Charm than Arcane Denial.

I do agree with what you're saying though, Esper Charm and Muddle the Mixture are two good spells that *just happen to be* counterspells if you need them. It's hard for people to hate on stuff like that, in my expereince.
EDIT:
Have you considered making the "dual land investment?" I recently did with Doran, and I'm actually quite happy with the added consistency.
I like the list a lot but I feel Fabricate is a lot stronger than Kuldotha Forgemaster. Forgemaster is just way too slow with the tap activation and the cost is so expensive even if he eats himself the value just isn't there unless you're already winning with an army of thopter tokens.
I would also try to make room for Snapcaster Mage.
Nothing in this game is degenerate or completely dominant. They haven't banned anything in standard in a long, long time. Hell they should have banned affinity right away, but they didn't until boxed sales collapsed too. Hasbro had to come in and fire people.
I'll enjoy watching all the whiners eat crow monday.
Hello and welcome everyone to what (I’m hoping) will be a well-received departure from expectations. Sharuum is-by any measure-my favorite Commander of all time, as well as one of the strongest in the format. The reasons for her success vary. While combo versions are typical, Sharuum’s power lie in her target selection. Sharuum (and artifact strategies at large) is a walking recovery suite. While grabbing Magister Sphinx and others are often straightforward paths to victory, her ability to grab Mindslaver, Executioner’s Capsule, Memory Jar can turn games around quickly. Contrary to opinion, Sharuum builds should ideally be the “answer” deck at the table. Comboing off as soon as possible is a popular misconception-in fact, it should be your LAST resort.
This might be a little nit picky.. But you're running more combos then beaters and the deck seems more combo oriented then non-combo oriented. So your intro is a little misleading.

Well, the deck keeps the combos in as a last resort, and you only need one beater... hint: he's blue, Jack accidentally gave him a "," and he 'Seeks.

I know the deck can provide some beats. But shouldn't plan A be your most powerful move? It just doesn't make much sense to say the deck is a beatdown deck first BEFORE its a combo deck.
Its like saying my gun is a walking stick BEFORE its a weapon lol.

The absolute best weapon at any given time with this list is table ignorance. Second is misinformation. Third is combo.
The list is extremely combo oriented. But I encourage playing it in the most non-offensive way possible, slowly assemble combo pieces and assist other players when it's advantagous. While the deck has a LOT of combos, it also has great recursion and answers-you'd be surprised how well Executioner's Capsule and Dispeller's Capsule encourages people to "play nice".
Being the "answer deck/nice guy" at the table is this list's greatest advantage, as it lulls the table into a false sense of security. They think they can "trust" you long enough for them to attempt winning. Live unto this role as much as possible. Practice a neutral political position. And then punish their misplaced trust with Bitter Ordeal.
yes, the list's best physical weapons are it's combos. But it's real guns are the pilot's ability to smile, lie and steal wins. The intentions of the list (and intro) are wrote to reflect how this list (and any given multiplayer list) should really be played.
That being said, the intro kinda sucks, doesn't it?

Also, I have a buddy who plays Sharuum in my playgroup that really needs to read this thread. The first time he sat down to play with us, he pulls out Sharuum, and is dead turn 4. Why? Between turn 1 and 4 he made it blatantly obvious that his only goal was to sit down, combo out, and kill everyone. He has since learned to be a little more inauspicious about it. Still, he could use the advice you've laid out here to improve his chances of surviving the first 5 turns.

Both of these cards are already good on their own in your deck. Mirrorworks lets you double up on any artifact you cast, which is especially great when you can drop a mana artifact and immediately tap it to get a second copy. Ironworks can work as an infinite piece in the Thopter-Sword combo (sac the thopters for 2 mana each, which you can then use to make 2 more thopters) and can also help you jump up in mana costs easily.
However, combine the too, and you can infinite out.
Sharuum enters the battlefield, triggering Mirrorworks and her own ability. Stack them in whichever order, but sac her for 2 before the Mirrorworks ability resolves. Use it to pay for the works, put a second Sharuum into play, and have the copy's trigger target the original Sharuum in your yard. The original trigger can bring back whatever artifact you want, and you can sacrifice the second Sharuum for mana to copy that artifact.
Doing this, you can recur every artifact in your graveyard an unlimited number of times (as you can also sac those artifacts), generate infinite colorless, and get infinite copies of all of your artifacts. It doesn't win with no assistance, but there's lots of things that make it immediately lethal or very quickly lethal.

This is really informational. It has helped me a lot in tuning my current Sharuum list. Although mine isn't strictly combo, this has given me a lot of ideas.
Thanks!
(Also, thanks for your deck help through Twitter. :D)
So I was denied primer status with the following message from SuperSonic:
Hi there, and thanks much for your application. At this time, the committee has decided to temporarily decline your application for primer status, with expectant hope that you will improve it in the following ways:
Deck History: There is no deck history section. Please read the minimum requirements for what we need here and tell us a bit in your primer about how your deck has changed since you constructed it. Deck List Organization: Organization by card type is somewhat helpful, but we ask that you organize it further, whether by CMC or alphabetical order or some other criteria. Card Options: A few things here:
Firstly, there are no links/card tags at all in this section, which we require (check the minimum requirements for clarification). That should be easy.
Secondly, we would like to see some more cards outlined here than just the ones you've chosen. It looks like maybe 15 cards or so are talked about that are actually in your deck. What about the other 45-50 non-lands? Even removal spells have to earn their place, and we expect readers to hear from you how they, and other role-players you have omitted, earn their spots in your deck. As a side note, we do love the expanded section for cards that you have NOT included in your deck and the reasons for that. We find that information very useful.
And finally, if you could organize the cards in this section in a similar way as you choose to organize your deck list, that would make it a bit more readable.
How to Play Wall-o-Text: We feel this could be organized better. Separating your paragraphs, using card tags where appropriate and such. Some of the other applicants have had success sorting this section into Game Start, Early, Middle, and Late-Game sections.
Based on what we've seen, we think you are very capable of making these changes and we look forward to reviewing a resubmission in the near future. As always, please contact myself or anyone else on the committee with questions you may have about your application, and thanks again for your effort.
He raises some good points. I've always felt like this thread was less "pretty" than other primers, and missing a few informative parts. I just couldn't put by finger on what. So needless to say, I'll be re-writing and altering certain parts to fit the review board's expectations.
I'm glad they seemed to enjoy it though. That gives me a lot of hope for my next application.
Now for your questions!
Wildfire393: Fun fact, I actually tried that combo already, along with another interation of it. I also tested both cards extensively before dropping them (which reminds me-they both need added to the combo and Cards not To Use Section). While they both appear good on the surface, combo-centric builds of sharuum want to win immeadiately when they fire off. This is why the Bitter Ordeal combo works so well. Other combos also (at the least) give you additional resources (Bloom+S. Station with mana) without much work, which can prove invaluable in many ways. Were so many slots not already devoted to proven combo pieces, I'd include either (ideally both) in the list, as they're quite good.

Read and enjoyed the OP; I like the direction you are going with the primer. I have a Sharuum deck, too; don't know if it would be helpful as an option or a resource, but it is currently updated (2009 - Current).
Good luck with your revision and update. I look forward to reading it soon!
Hey, I really like your deck!
Every deck I have ever designed has been a voltron, and I've been wanting to get away from that.
I really like the Idea of using Sharuum as a toolbox, but my group sadly are not fans of infinite combos.
My friend has a bant deck that is really responsive, and does well.
I was hoping I could do something like that with Sharuum but I have no idea where to begin.
Any ideas?

Hi Ryujin!
Sharuum is an extremely versatile general. While infinite combo varieties are arguably the strongest, that doesn't mean she's limited to this in the least. She's also a VERY strong Esper-control general with lots of utility. Keep in mind, you're in the strongest wedge for board wipe and spot removal, with tons of great non-combo finishers like Sphinx of the Steel Wind, Inkwell, etc. You could even make use of stuff like Decree of Silence and Hex Parasite for some added fun.
Sharuum is also a great toolbox deck thanks to small things like Artificer's Intuition and it's tutor suite. If you're looking to be the answer guy, Executioner's Capsule, Dispeller's Capsule, Lotus Bloom and Salvaging Station (along with GY hate trinkets) isn't a bad place to start off. You could easily make a meta-hate package off the back of that, utilizing tools that hose certain players.
It all depends on what you want to do. Artifact Goodstuffz is still an option as well. I'd be happy to help you with a list. You can contact me here or DM me.

Hrm. Based on what you've got, here's what I'd cut:
Grand Abolisher
Tefari
Stonehorn Dignitary
Since you're not running a combo-focused build, these serve little purpose. Tefari and Grand Abolisher are small bodied and politically offensive-players don't like being told when they can or can't cast something. Dignitary interacts with only two cards in the deck, and is otherwise useless.
I'd actually replace them with this: Shimmer Myr Liquimetal Coating
Mana rocks
Shimmer Myr gives you an extra chance to flash in stuff when you want it. Liquimetal Coating is weaker than Mycosynth Lattice, but will allow you to repeatedly blow up lands with Karn. You've got a top heavy curve-stuff like Mindstone, Signets and Prismatic Lense would help out a lot, and are affordable alternatives to what I'm using in my list.
I'm not sure about Bloodgift Demon. At 5 CMC, he's competing with another big draw spell (Necrologia) and is a weaker card type. Have you considered Necrologia? I've been meaning to test it but don't have a place to cut.
Also, how are PWs and other Counter reliant permanents in your area? Hex Parasite might have a home.

I see reanimation but I think I'm good with Bojuka Bog and Spellbomb.
I'm not sure how frequently walkers come out, I know my friends have them but I just recently came back to the game.
The decks I usually played against are:
Horde of Notions
Phelddagrif/Rafiq
Lyzolda, the Blood Witch
Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite
Damia, Sage of Stone
Zedruu the Greathearted
Kamahl, Fist of Krosa
Wort, Boggart Auntie
How should I go about playing the deck?
Any non-infinite win conditions that I could add?

Seems like a fairly eclectic but balanced bunch. If GY based stuff like Reanimator or Wort seem to be an issues, toss in Leyline of the Void.
As for playing the deck, be as neutral as possible. Refrain from becoming directly involved in conflicts, wipe the board when it's mutually beneficial for you and at least one other player. Practice politics as your major weapon and allow your opponents to exhaust their resources against each other, but not to the point of gaining such a massive advantage their victory is inevitable. Damia and other G based decks tend to focus on big mana effects and eking out advantage. Stop their engines when you can-Basic and non-basic land hate is always an option. Many Sharuum lists run a mass-LD spell of some sort. It's something to consider.
Depends. I've tested out all of the artifact finishers-Inkwell and Sphinx of the Steel Wind are the best. You could add Mycosynth Lattice and blow up all their lands w/ Karn, but that's really mean.
----------
So I'm thinking about snapcaster mage. My reasoning behind this is that he'd add extra value in a pinch for tutors and re-enable spent, necessary cards. Thoughts?

I like the new list, but there's a couple of things worth noting:
If you're not running Karn, Silver Golem there's little reason to run Liquimetal coating, as it appears you've nothing that directly interacts with it outside of Kuldotha Forgemaster.
Replace Leonin Shikari with Silverblade Paladin. You'll almost ALWAYS have metalcraft and free equip is superior to insta-equip. And speaking of which, have you considered Cranial Plating?
That with Inkmoth Nexus can get pretty scary

@BroncoTurbo: Glad you liked it man! And if you ever need any help, hit me up!
Thanks, Heroes of The Planes! You guys are great!
Actual Truth:
Thanks Jack, I'll forward that along to him.
FYI: my Doran Primer (and others) weren't looking so good either, luckily I was assisted by a very helpful mod who gave me a lot of the same advice you were given. I spent about 6 hours cleaning everything up, re-writing, etc. It's a chore, but it's a labor of love. Best of luck buddy, you'll get there soon!
For sure! Your doran list is sick. And the mods seem as though they like the primer as is, it just needs some cleaning up and expansion.
Speaking of which, bumpdate-the "cards included" sections has been expanded upon considerably. Take a look!
Thanks, Heroes of The Planes! You guys are great!

@Jack
Read and enjoyed the OP; I like the direction you are going with the primer. I have a Sharuum deck, too; don't know if it would be helpful as an option or a resource, but it is currently updated (2009 - Current).
Good luck with your revision and update. I look forward to reading it soon!
Any ideas?

WUB Sharuum the Hegemon
RWU Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest
RG Wort, the Raidmother
WU Brago, King Eternal
B Chainer, Dementia Master
Thanks, Heroes of The Planes! You guys are great!
Actual Truth:
Here is what I have so far:
http://mtgdeckbuilder.net/Decks/ViewDeck/226960
Most of it is from your deck with the combo pieces removed.
The rest is just stuff that I thought would be fun to play with.
I'm not crazy attached to anything though....

I'd actually replace them with this:
Shimmer Myr
Liquimetal Coating
Thanks, Heroes of The Planes! You guys are great!
Actual Truth:
Thank you for the advice, I really apreciate it.
-Bloodgift Demon
-Austere Command
-Tormod's Crypt
-Leyline of the Void
-Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir
-Grand Abolisher
-Stonehorn Dignitary
+All 3 Signets
+Sol Ring
+Darksteel Ingot
+Shimmer Myr
+Hex Parasite
+Liquidmetal Coating
+Necrologia
I see reanimation but I think I'm good with Bojuka Bog and Spellbomb.
I'm not sure how frequently walkers come out, I know my friends have them but I just recently came back to the game.
The decks I usually played against are:
Horde of Notions
Phelddagrif/Rafiq
Lyzolda, the Blood Witch
Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite
Damia, Sage of Stone
Zedruu the Greathearted
Kamahl, Fist of Krosa
Wort, Boggart Auntie
How should I go about playing the deck?
Any non-infinite win conditions that I could add?
WBRG Saskia the Unyielding
WUB Sharuum the Hegemon
RWU Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest
RG Wort, the Raidmother
WU Brago, King Eternal
B Chainer, Dementia Master
Thoughts?
Thanks, Heroes of The Planes! You guys are great!
Actual Truth:
Here is the new list:
http://www.mtgdeckbuilder.net/Decks/ViewDeck/238159
I added some sword goodness and the Sun Titan combo from the Hanna, Ship's Navigator primer.
I also side-boarded some of the cards I'd need against more competitive decks.
Let me know what you think.
WBRG Saskia the Unyielding
WUB Sharuum the Hegemon
RWU Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest
RG Wort, the Raidmother
WU Brago, King Eternal
B Chainer, Dementia Master
I like the new list, but there's a couple of things worth noting:
If you're not running Karn, Silver Golem there's little reason to run Liquimetal coating, as it appears you've nothing that directly interacts with it outside of Kuldotha Forgemaster.
Replace Leonin Shikari with Silverblade Paladin. You'll almost ALWAYS have metalcraft and free equip is superior to insta-equip. And speaking of which, have you considered Cranial Plating?
That with Inkmoth Nexus can get pretty scary
I apologize for the delay and lack of updates lately, everyone. School has started back for me and I've been unable to get proper testing in.
Thanks, Heroes of The Planes! You guys are great!
Actual Truth:
Any artifact deck that could do this, should do this. I can attest to the power of a land smacking you for lethal infect in the early game. It's good, very good... and I hate it, lol.
Jack, I hope this Junior year of high school is just as good or better as your last three! Remember though, you don't want to start looking older than the teachers!
