Necroing my thread for a bit. I've kind of lost motivation to turn it into an actual primer. I don't own this deck, so it's mostly theorycrafting at this point anyway. I do plan on getting it though, it's just a matter of $$$ However, I certainly spend more time theorycrafting than actually playing magic these days sad but true.


So I'm currently running 24 A/D/D in my horde. I think I want to cut it down to 20 or 22 though and make space for the following:

Lord of the Void - against creature based decks he can get us a lot of value.

Archangel of Thune - the lifelink would be welcome. The buffing ability is also quite nice and can help us establish some serious board presence over time.

Thundermaw Hellkite - he's got really great synergy with Kaalia and a 5/5 flyer with haste for 3RR is bonkers

Kokusho, the Evening Star and Yosei, the Morning Star - I'd like to include more A/D/D that actually want to die. These both have nice abusable abilities.

I've got a hunch these ones could get swapped out:

Reya Dawnbringer - she's got a lot of disadvantages. She only hits for 4 but costs 9! Her ability is nice but you've got to wait a turn rather than benefiting immediately.

Hellkite Tyrant - he can potentially give us a lot of value but it could be more of a sideboard thing

Utvara Hellkite - I'd really like to optimize the list so that I'm cutting out everything with flameblast syndrome. The abilities aren't useful if they can't survive until the next attack phase. Utvara has a pretty high cmc and no built in haste so I can't usually work around the flameblast syndrome by hardcasting him. At least Aurelia and Hellkite charger have haste and are cheaper.


I'd also like more redundancy in my ramp and card draw sections. They feel too light. I can't exactly rely on my creature based draw and neither can I rely on cheating creatures into play


Feel free to point out anything else you think is weak or something you think should be in here and we can discuss it.

I am less then a year new to magic and I love this deck and am actually in the process of making it I just need about 20 more and this baby will be rolling. I'm planning on using this at a grand prix in a commander side event in a couple weeks I wanted to know what you think would make this deck ready for that mostly in the land section( I.e. Cheaper lands that will get the job done until I can afford the original) I like the original version of this deck when I first saw it. So I'm trying to find a balance between how you have it now and how it was a couple month ago. Any ideas would be great!! Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hey, I''m not sure if you're still updating this but I'm still running a mostly stock kaalia deck that I'd love to bring up to speed a bit. Some lists I've seen talk about running 5-10 A/D/D and just more tutors/ramp to add consistency to the deck. Like more of a always getting Rakdos V.1 out t3. Do you feel like the A/D/D count could be cut a bit for some more control elements? Mostly like all of Red's LD. I'll maybe post here again when I've got my list with me.

timedoxforever, thanks for posting, and sorry for the late reply. I'm glad you like the deck. I think the mana base can certainly stand some budget cuts. I wouldn't be too worried. You can slot in a Chromatic Lantern or something if you need to.

Phone, looking at the list I can certainly cut a few things for tutors. I want to find space for Idyllic Tutor, Steelshaper's Gift, Entomb, Buried Alive and possibly some of the black transmute cards, while simultaneously bringing down the curve. Doing this would make the list a bit more consistent and competitive. The Worldgorger combo is the easiest way to get a win in a larger multiplayer environment and finding ways to make that happen reliably is a good thing.

I'm planning on acquiring this deck soon so I will be revamping the OP and the list itself in time.

Quick questions... how does this fare in multiplayer? Also, when starting out lets say turn 3 you're able to cast kaalia but you have to tap out to do so and no greaves out... do you do it and expose her? Or wait til she's protected?

Also, what do you think about sunforger in this deck?

I also like this list. I have a multiplayer Kaalia list that I want to post up, and this is a good forum to do so, I think. Thanks! I'll post my list up later when I get to my cards again.

in my old kaalia build, i actually use final fortune, doomsday, hellcarver demon, relentless assault among others as a little "goodbye" package in case my opponents are stabilising, and i just need that extra oomph to kill the table. not sure if its your kinda thing; more often than not, 'cuz i'd play the all-in card, it gets pretty freaking exciting.

In my opinion, Sunforger is a rather casual card and has no place in Kaalia. The only place I can really see it shine is a Boros equipment themed deck where stuff like Puresteel Paladin and Stoneforge Mystic are maindecked - see my Aurelia list in sig. I currently don't have it listed because I'd rather see a Umezawa's Jitte or Sword of Feast and Famine in play.

Because of the Worldgorger combo and my other reanimation shenanigans, this list tends to fare rather well in multiplayer as long as the other decks are on par. I really shy away from casting Kaalia without being able to haste her.

First batch of edits:

Fervor --> Steelshaper's Gift - I'd rather get Lightning Greaves into my hand more reliably. I will be adding at least one other equipment target. Probably Deathrender but maybe Sword of Feast and Famine.

Council’s Judgement -- > Utter End - I honestly really like this rehash of Vindicate. Instant speed exile.

Tainted Pact -- > Diabolic Tutor - I'm a bit worried about exiling combo pieces. All in all Diabolic is safer.

Patriarch’s Bidding -- > Entomb - Entomb is almost soley going to get Worldgorger.

Syphon Mind --> Buried Alive - I'm aiming to make our reanimation subtheme work as well as possible since it's the main reason I'm not running Necropotence (which may happen if my draw power is still lacking).

Gamble -- > Shred memory - I don't think we really have the hand fattening abilities to make Gamble work reliably. Shred Memory has a lot of solid targets.

Earthquake, Catastrophe --> Path to Exile, Swords to Plowshares - The list was lacking two of the most efficient removal spells in the game to its detriment.

Austere Command --> Merciless Eviction - I really think Eviction is the better option for us. It might be possible to run both wipes though, we'll see. I like my sweepers to be flexible. Exiling is really cool.
